I never saw that set in stores or advertised in the paper. But still $400 for a system with a game that might be too difficult for my 5 year old and I know the 9 year old could care less about. The movie we already have on dvd so why get the blu-ray version? The kids watching the movie aren't going to care about picture quality. Anyone have a list of E rated PS3 games that you can currently buy in the store?

List of Rated E games from Amazon

Five might not be too young for LBP.  My daughter Julia is 7 and she plays it constantly.  Nine certainly isn't too old to be interested in it.

Also, the LEGO games are fantastic, especially Star Wars.

I have a 10yr old son that uses the PS3 a lot more than the Wii.  He plays LittleBigPlanet and most of the sports titles.  However, he's not allowed (or interested yet) in the "M" rated games.   My 8 year old daughter doesn't use the PS3 much at all - she uses the Wii a bit more.

Thanks Bill for the list. My 9 year old loves sports games and it looks like the list is full of them. He would love to play M rated games but they are forbidden in our household. He tries to sneak in GTA every so often so I have quite of collection of them now that I've confiscated.

Glad to help!  There's certainly a fantastic assortment of sports game available (though most are multi-plat).

Bill, is there a list of features for the PS3 online dashboard? It would be interesting to see what the PS3 can do verses the 360 as far as networking and non-video game play is concerned.

Here's the Wikipedia article on the XMB:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XrossMediaBar

I haven't used it all that much as I don't care a whole lot about various media.  I know is has an MP3 player, and you can connect to media servers that the PS3 can use to play movies or music.  I've never looked much into it.  You can do text, video and voice chat in the XMB, but they haven't finished cross-game voice chat yet.  The Internet browser is kinda clunky compared to anything you'd run on your PC, but it's serviceable.  I'm mostly a games and Blu-rays guy, so I haven't explored much else.

Don't forget, PS3 has Home.  And Folding.  Truly awesome, awesome stuff.

Blu Ray here.  That's about all my PS3 is good for.

Definitely not playing $20 PS2 games.

Thanks Bill for the link. I'm trying to get either one of these systems in a budget for a home theater system as a media extender to my home server. The PS3 takes away the need to buy a blu-ray but the 360 seems to work as a more complete media extender. However, I can easily change out the HDD on the PS3 for extra homebrew software.

By the way, I wonder what kind of homebrew games and emulators I can get for the ps3. I know I can program the 360 with the toolkits I have here at work. With my Dreamcast, I could emulate anything.

How would one go about doing this?  A local media store buys the systems for like $10 and pays pretty much nothing for games, but I'd prefer to keep it if there was a way to mod the console.
