Hello everyone.

I posted in the newbie forum, but I just wanted to send out a general greeting to everyone here.  Hemble (who has gone on sabbatical now) introduced me to this site, and posted a few of my customs at this link: http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=12180.msg222170#msg222170

First off, I want to thank everyone for the feedback.  While I was not officially a member, I did find the comments very helpful and insightful.

Secondly, I will use this post as a sort of de facto index for whatever pieces I post...I see that the threads are relatively self-contained for customizers here, so I will follow that model.

And thirdly, I would like to say the perusing these threads has been very inspiring...much of the Expanded Universe work as well as the custom work derived from the trilogies is very impressive.

Well, I guess I'll quit being a windbag and post a few customs!

Darth Vader (revised)

Among the customs that Hemble posted on my behalf was my Darth Vader...I have since made numerous changes to him.  This is the original:

I work primarily with Marvel Legends and similarly scaled figures.  The recipe is as follows:
Head: Original Sculpt (Epoxy putty for helmet and face plate, vinyl for "skirt" and grate)
Neck, chest, arms (Marvel Legends War Machine)
Stomach, pelvis, hip joints (Spider-Man Classics Mysterio)
Legs (Combination of Mysterio, Marvel Legends Modern Iron Man, and a LOT of Epoxy Putty).
Hands (Mandarin Spawn)

The armour is from a McFarlane Toys Jackal Assassin...I used it to give the armour a literal Samurai style, since much of Vader's conceptual design was derived from Samurai armour.  I wanted to fuse McQuarrie's early concepts with some of my own ideas.  The inner and outer capes are fabric, and the lightsaber is made from clear plastic dowel that I found at a hobby shop.

I think you are extremely talented.  Hemble spoke very highly of your.

These would make for a much better 6" line than what Hasbro has offered... simply amazing!

Thanks for the kind words, Chewie.  I really do wish that Hasbro would branch into this scale...the Unleashed figures are interesting, but I really believe that they'd clean up with articulated 6" products.  Who knows...with them taking over Marvel Legends from Toy Biz, they may see the potential and have the means to create something of the sort.

Here's another custom of mine...a real headache.

General Grievous

Here's the work-in-progress:

This custom uses numerous figures (as you can see from the WIP).  This was a very sculpt-heavy custom, and the sculpting was done with epoxy putty.  The armour design deviates quite a bit from the film, but I was basically trying to get the basic appearance of the character and work around the fodder.  I would have preferred to have the sets of arms attached to a single joint on each side, but could not concieve of a way to do so.

Lots of work went into this thing...there are still many rough spots and things that bug me about him, but for the most part I'm happy with how he turned out.

Let me know what you think, and thanks for looking.

That Vader is insanely cool.  When I was a kid, before I knew Vader was Luke's father, that's how I imagined him looking during the Clone Wars, way, way before the PT came out.  Excellent work.

WOW!  These 6" Scale customs are amazing!  I love the WIP shot of the Grievous, the parts combination and the sculpting are phenominal.

I love the samurai look to Darth Vader, very effective!  Excellent work all around, I can't wait to see what else you coming up!

the vader is my fave of your work that i have seen. i wish that vader would've looked that way at the end of ROTS, more of a McQuarrie/samurai conceptual feel, rather than just straight to what we saw throughout the original trilogy.

the grievous is amazing! i think with the amount of work it took, you should be very pleased.

i look forward to seeing more of your work in the future :)

Truely friggin' amazing!!! I loved Vader when Hemble posted him before, and I love new the detailed pics even more! That origional concept samurai look just leaves me in awe!

Grievious is spectacular too, just soooooo coool! But I gotsta ask: why were the lower hands were left as human hands? The different armor, the two-per-side joints, nothing else bothers me at all - he's just so well done that he looks like he's supposed to be built that way!

Thanks for sharing your awesome works with us!

2 Superb pieces of art my friend! I like the Grievous the most. With those WIPs you really show how much work and parts went into that bad boy. Neat!

Thanks for the kind response.  Much of the ideas that I pilfered were from the early paintings and (to a lesser degree) the early drafts of the Star Wars script, which was drastically different from the finished film.  Vader very much seemed as though he could be a relic of the Clone Wars (which seemed in the far distant past to the film before the prequels came along).  There's a lot of great stuff and unused ideas from this Star Wars prehistory...thanks again, man.

Gregorbian

Thanks for the feedback.  Grievous was certainly a challenge...I must say I enjoyed piecing together the base...though I may have balked at the attempt had I known how bloody long it would take me to sculpt.  I'll be posting more stuff soon...thus far I have made ten Star Wars customs in this scale.

darth_ripley

Thanks for commenting.  It would have been nice to see at least *some* variation in the armour design...I'm sure that improvements in technology would have been made between Episode III and IV to warrant upgrades for Vader's life support system.  I guess, perhaps, this design could be seen as a crude prototype for the more streamlines version seen in the films...an interesting take...I like it  :).  Thanks again.

Outrider

Thanks for the very kind feedback, man.  I hope you enjoy some of my other work...not all of my takes on these designs are to everyone's tastes, but I certainly appreciate any feedback.

PenDragon

Thanks for the comments.  I'll be perfectly honest...the lower set of hands are left that way out of sheer laziness.  I had modded the top set (which were sculpted in a closed grip), and left modding the bottom set until later, since I wasn't sure how to modify the articulated fingers to match the top set.  When it came time to prime the sculpt, I had forgotten to go back...when I noticed my oversite, I was so sick of working on this custom that I simply let it slide.  Terrible, I know...one of these days I'll fix it up...and maybe give him a cloak.  Thanks again, man.

Kit Fisto

Thanks for the feedback, man.  One of the reasons why I made sure to snap some pics of Grievous in the early stages is that in order for the custom to work, I knew he'd have to be completely unrecognizable from the original base.  I also wanted to keep track of my process more thoroughly.  I'm glad I did.  Thanks again.

Glassman!!  Great to see you, man.  I think you may be overstating my abilities...don't stop  ;).  Thanks for the way too kind words...I'll have to search out your thread...I've always really enjoyed your work.

Darth_Ennis

Thanks for the kind words, man.  Grievous has his problems, but I'm glad you like him...the scale was important to me for this, especially since the Hasbro figure is so short and wonky.

Thanks again, fellas.

Chewbacca

I'll admit it...I was unsure about how to approach Chewie.  I've never been wild about McQuarrie's bug-eyed monster, and so I went for a decidedly more traditional, final film version of the character.  But, I decided to try and imagine what Chewbacca would look like had the first Star Wars coupled the Death Star battle with the ground battle on Kashyyk, and this is what I came up with.

The base figure is a ML Sasquatch.  Basically, all I did was resculpt the head, using the mouth and eyes from the original figure, and add longer fur to the neck, shoulders and chest with epoxy putty.  The shin joint has been sculpted over as well.  The usual fabric and leather elements are present as well.  The tabbard and shoulder covering has been threaded with rough twine, and the bandolier strap has small pieces of copper tubing for Chewie's energy quarrels.  The bowcaster is a ML hawkeye bow attached to a rifle, and the sidearm is a cast off from a Stealth Wolverine.

I know he's not my best, but I was a little lost as to what to do with him.  I'm sure I'll have a better idea down the road, but be too lazy to revisit the character  ;).  I tried to create the illusion of the fur on the neck and shoulders flowing down from the head...not sure if it looks okay or not.  Also, the open mouth concerns me...not sure if I made the right choice.

Han Solo

Again, like Chewie, this was a relatively quick custom to put together.  The base body is a Stealth Wolverine (my favorte base...even moreso than Bullseye), and a Helms Deep Aragorn head.  I sculpted the sleeves, filled in the holes in the legs, gave him a leather vest and flak vest, removed some detailing on the boots, and sculpted the hair and beard.

The design is derived from the film costume and the early conceptual design...I decided to give him the Flash Gordon-style head piece just...because!  I wanted him to still be very much a scoundrel and a smuggler, but to have that more literal serial-type feel to his design.  The flak vest was sort of a way to reflect the early designs, and to suggest an element of practicality...I liked the idea of him being prepared for anything at any time, which includes wearing all of his piloting gear on the ship and when he's stopping off to switch shipments.  It is also for this reason that I avoided adding to many pouches, back packs, and omitting the cloak...those things would just get in the way of being able to comfortably pilot the Falcon or make fast getaways.  Just the essentials.

And while I would have preferred to use one of the paintings from the first film as a background, I figured this Empire painting could do the trick (the Star Wars portfolio is packed away somewhere):

Let me know what you think, and thanks for looking.
