Moss to be traded to Oakland, agent confirms
Mark Craig,  Star Tribune
February 24, 2005

The Vikings and Oakland Raiders have agreed to a trade that will send Vikings receiver Randy Moss to the Raiders in exchange for the seventh overall pick in this year's draft, linebacker Napoleon Harris and a low-round draft pick this year, a person with knowledge of the situation said Wednesday.

"It's sort of a bittersweet moment for Randy," said his agent, Dante DiTrapano. "He had seven years in Minnesota, and he loved being a Viking. But, at the same time, this gives him a better chance to win a Super Bowl. The Oakland Raiders have vowed to use Randy like he has been used the past seven years, and that's throw the ball deep."

NFL trades can't become official until March 2. Because of that, the Vikings aren't able to comment on Moss' status.

"We've had discussions with the Raiders, but we have nothing to say about it," said Rob Brzezinski, Vikings vice president of football operations. "That's all we can say."

Moss has been rumored to be on the trading block since the end of a injury-plagued and controversial-filled 2004 season. Brzezinski said the Vikings did not shop Moss, and that the Raiders contacted them recently to initiate trade talks.

Does that look like not very much in return?  It seems to me as though it is.  Oh well, a big headache gone but an immensely talented player.  Surprising to see the suggestion that the Raiders have a better shot at a ring than the Vikings?  Were we watching the same season go by?

Guess I need some black paint for my Moss figure.  Guess I can sell the white variant as a retro now :P

Red McCombs is a cheap SOB!  He traded away his best player for three crapshoots.  This franchise is always doing things the wrong way.  The Raiders are jumping for joy.  They robbed the Vikings.  How does this trade make us better?  It would have been worth it to include a DB and DE IMO, but this is a frickin joke.  McCombs better sell the team and not come back into town ever.  He probably did this to take a shot at us for not giving him a stadium.  Forget about them using cap money to improve the D as long as Reda@@ owns the team.  He is just about squeezing as much out of this team as he can.  He's a leech.  I can't wait until he no longer controls this team.

I'm less angry at the Vikings for dumping Moss now that they actually went out and improved the defense.  The additions of Pat Williams and Smoot have given the Vikes a shot at a middle of the road defense barring injuries.  I'd like to see them add a Safety and another LB yet.  They need a WR or two to offset the Moss loss also.  A top 10 O and a middle ranked D will mean a few more wins next year IMO.

Agreed, I've been pretty depressed about the squad until today.  I still think that trade was pathetically bad, almost as bad as Herschel...almost

But, these signings today are big

They need a LB, WR, Safety and Kicker.  I could also see them dealing one of the RB's for the above positions and using the two first rounders on a LB, WR or S.

The kicker is the head scratcher to me.  I have hated the Vikes Kicking game since 1998 even before Gary Anderson missed the FG.  A 50 year old dude is not an answer, especially since they waste a roster spot by carrying 2 damn kickers on the team for kicking off and one for field goals.  I guess they could wait until training camp or try the draft (Mike Nugent of Ohio State stands out) but otherwise they again are screwed and will be forced to punt from the 35 yard line.  Bastards

People in Pittsburgh are sort of enjoying the fact that Burress apparantly has **** that DOES stink.  Oh how that must hurt his ego!

Not that I dislike Plaxico Burress, and I regret his now sealed loss to free-agency (which he was supposedly the replacement for Moss by all accounts here anyway), but accepting that for what it is then I get a kick out of seeing him NOT being as hotly clamored for as he thought he would be.  I think he's feeling some wrath from other owners at "flashy" kinds of players like Moss perhaps...  I dunno.

I tend to not follow much in the off-season, but the Steelers signed his replacement yesterday I guess, more or less, and are moving on...  Plus we still had Ward anyway, but the Plax story's been the big one here lately.

Who's going to throw the ball to Moss in Oakland?  I realize that Moss will make most QB's look good (when he's in the mood) but it's not like they really have anyone there.

Why is Minnesota cursed?

The Vikings are cursed until they win the Super Bowl, much like the Cubs and White Sox need a World Series trophy to lose that moniker.
I agree about not liking Anderson.  I never really cared for him.  I didn't mind it when they used Berger as the kickoff specialist.  Now they are wasting a roster spot.  Maybe Eiling will pan out, maybe they draft Nugent.  I would like a young kicker they can count on.
I think the Tice thing was done by that slug Hovan to get back at his former coach.  Moss may also be the culprit.  I heard that one of the times he supposedly sold tickets was proven to be impossible.
I think Raider fans will see the true Moss when Gannon or Collins can't get him the ball often enough.  At this point, I like the deal.  Draft one of the top WR with that 7 pick and things look even better.

Kerry Collins, of course.  Ever heard of him?  He's totally badass.  Like totally.  He saved our season last year after Gannon got injured.

Instead of 1-15 they were what 3-13?  I'm still miffed they got rid of him but I'm excited about the last two weeks of free agency

They could have done all of this AND kept him...instead of strong NFC contenders we're talking Super Bowl contenders IMO

I heard that Plaxico signed with the Giants.  They overpaid for that stiff IMO.  I'm glad the Vikings held off.  I'd really like to see them pick up one of the stud WR in the draft.

Agreed, I'd love either Williams or Edwards, I also wouldn't mind them picking one of the stud Running Backs and trading Smith AND Bennett.  I could also see them taking Derrick Johnson from Texas.  That 7th pick should be an impact player at a spot they need an impact which is good

Still haven't addressed the kicking game.  If Elling or Andersen/Anderson is the kicker next year it will be their major weakness (Again :-\)

Did you guys hear about that L.A. Avengers lineman who was killed during an Arena Football League game this past weekend?  Very sad.  Just got hit funny during a tackle on a kick return, and suffered a life ending spinal cord injury right there on the field (though they didn't pronounce him dead until an hour or so later at the hospital).  Man, if I was a football player, something like that would scare the **** out of me...  :-\

Biggest surprises of the day:  The Vikes pass on Williams and Detroit takes him.  Their offense will be scary once they aquire a top QB.  I don't think Garcia or Harrington qualify.
Troy Williamson is okay, but I would have preferred Williams.
