Keeping up with the Joneses
« on: February 24, 2008, 06:01 PM »
I was thinking "my God, there's just a ****-ton of 'different' Indy figures to choose from in the new line," so I thought I'd fun to try to keep track of them all.  Originally I just wanted to compare all the different 3 3/4" versions, but for the sake of completeness, I went ahead and included everything.

Basic figures:
Wave 1 (Raiders):  2
     *with Fertility Idol (Carded) (Loose)
*Cairo, jacketless, with Whip-Cracking Action!  (Carded) (Loose)
Wave 2 (Crystal Skull):  2
*hatless, jacketless, with rocket launcher  (Carded) (Loose)
*removable hat, with Crystal Skull  (Carded)  (Loose)
Wave 3 (Last Crusade):  2
     *Indiana Jones
     *Young Indy
Wave 4 (Temple of Doom):  ?

Deluxe:
Wave 1 (mostly Raiders):  4
     *with Temple Pitfall  (Carded)  (Loose)
     *with Temple Trap  (Carded)  (Loose)
*Map Room disguise, with Ark  (Carded) (Loose)
     *with Horse  (Carded)  (Loose)

Adventure Heroes:
Wave 1 (Raiders): 4
     *with Tribal Warrior  (Carded) (Loose)
     *with Cairo Swordsman  (Carded) (Loose)
*Map Room disguise, with Marion Ravenwood (Carded) (Loose)
     *with German Mechanic  (Carded) (Loose)
Wave 2 (Crystal Skull): 2
     *with Col. Dovchenko  (Carded) (Loose)
     *with Ugha Warrior  (Carded) (Loose)
Ticket to Adventure Exclusive Mail-In:  Indy with Horse  (Loose)

12"
Wave 1:  2
     *Talking Indy  (Boxed) (Loose)
*Cairo, with Electronic Sounds & Whip-Cracking Action! (Boxed) (Loose)

Mighty Muggs
     *Indiana Jones  (Boxed) (Loose)

Mr. Potato Head
*Taters of the Lost Ark (Boxed) (Loose)

For those keeping score, that's eight different 3 3/4" Indys available on launch day!

I was trying to figure out which one of those was "the best," if there was such a thing, or if you'd have to buy two or more Indys to have the Ultimate Indiana Jones Action Figure, by mixing and matching parts and accessories and all.

Which one's the best?  Which one's the worst?

Thoughts?  (Besides "you have entirely too much time on your hands, Matt," please.)

You have entirely too much time on your hands, Matt.  :)

I really like the whipping-action Indy. The Map Room Disguise figure also looks great. So does the one with the rocket launcher. The others I could pass on.

I think that the crystal skull figure without the hat has the best face sculpt.

I'm going to go with getting several different Indy's to make an Ultimate...

I like the Head and Hat and whip on Action Feature Indy,

And probably use the Regular Indy for everything else.  Depends on what is under the robes of Map Room Indy.

You can see a bit of it here:

Body looks decent; hopefully the head comes off in one piece.

From what we've seen so far, I thought the face sculpt looked best on that figure as well.  Otherwise, the articulation looks really nice on the initial (jacketed) Indy from ROTLA, as well as the Crystal Skull version.  The face (or more so, the eyes) just look wonky on the pics of that SA ROTLA Indy, hopefully the final product will be better.

Several of these I don't need... these two are easily the best though I think -

I'll get those two, the one with the Ark and the horse, will probably pass on the other four... but might cave in and get him with the Idol.

That old Indy with the rocket launcher looks really damn good, doesn't it?  If the heads are swappable with the Raiders Indys, that could make for a bitchin' Cairo Indy.  As far as the one with the Skull, everything looks good, except for the hat.  I just can't get past how ridiculously large that fedora looks.

Some people at The Raven boards were talking about how good the two Deluxe versions from the Temple were, mostly because the holsters were smaller.  I do agree that the working holsters on some of the other figs are a little on the big side, but they don't seem so bad to me.  What really bugs me about those two Deluxe figures are the unarticulated knees.  I'm sorry--all the vintage Indys from 25 years ago had working knees, so there's no reason that any of these new ones shouldn't.  Outside of their accessories, those two Deluxe figures look completely redundant to me.  The Temple Trap Indy doesn't even have his European Carryall, for Christ's sake!

Yeah, if the heads are swappable, the Indy w/ ark will make a great, non jacketed figure.  I have a question here...wouldn't it make sense for Hasbro to spend the time and effort to make ONE excellent Indy face/head (per movie) and the just put it on all of the figures?  It seems silly to resculpt the head over and over again.

I've never quite understood Hasbro's thinking on that myself...

Figure production can take place at various factories, so parts may not be swappable because not all molds are in the same factory and all, but at the end of the day I'd think Hasbro would want to strive for as much "universal design" as possible with all their figures in all their toy lines...  Star Wars included, but Indy's really exemplifying why it's a benefit.

Most other compaies try this...  I know 21st's figures are pretty universal, at least by line, and that really can help with repaints and stuff.

Maybe we should ask about it in the Hasbro  Q&A

Yep, so far that looks like the figure of the year to me... beating out anything in Star Wars too.  I can see myself getting at least 4-5 of this figure.

If the heads are swappable with the Raiders Indys, that could make for a bitchin' Cairo Indy.

I'm hoping so, but even if they're not, maybe a quick dremeling will make it possible.

As far as the one with the Skull, everything looks good, except for the hat.  I just can't get past how ridiculously large that fedora looks.

I thought the same thing.  Why's the hat so damn big?

Perhaps the Hat has an "Action Feature"

It is supposed to be removable... most of the "good" looking hat sculpts are the non-removable ones.  Most of the ones that appear "oversized" are the removable ones.

I thought I had a list in my Toy Fair notes about which ones are removable and which aren't.  I'll see if I can find it and post a list...
