But who's to say that a blown call cost the Twins the game?  There's myriad possibilities about what might have happened if the ump had gotten the call right.  Even if the Twins had scored a run based on a Mauer ground rule double, the Yankees still had homefield advantage.  And that means that they get last licks in an extra innings home game, along with a chance to either tie the game up or take the lead to win.

I'm not saying that that call cost the Twins anything...we could go on forever with hypotheticals.  That call probably did cost them a run and the game might have been tied instead of over yadda yadda yadda.  It just sucks as a fan of the team that got screwed that it had to happen in so critical a spot.

The Twins lost and it's over.

But MLB has 6 umps instead of the normal 4 in the playoffs so they can make all these calls correctly and that what is just so hard to swallow for me.

The Yankees did more than their share to win that series, but the Twins sure did all they could to give that series to the Yankees too.

Okay Rob, and that explains why the Mets and Cubs didn't make the playoffs and why the Red Sox got knocked out in the first round.

Okay Rob, and that explains why the Mets and Cubs didn't make the playoffs and why the Red Sox got knocked out in the first round.

It sure does.  The Yankee payroll is over $50 million larger than the next biggest (about 33%).  They went out and threw stupid money at Teixeira (9 years, $180 million), Sabathia (7 years, $161 million) and Burnett (5 years, $83 million) - and that's only this year.  I like the Yankees.  When the Rays are out of it (which is most of the time) I root for them.  It's their prerogative to spend whatever they want to, and it's worked brilliantly - but unlike lots of Yankees fans, I don't have any illusions about how the organization goes about building the team.

Team                    2009 payroll
New York Yankees    $201,449,189
New York Mets            $149,373,987
Chicago Cubs            $134,809,000
Boston Red Sox            $121,745,999
Detroit Tigers            $115,085,145
Los Angeles Angels    $113,709,00
Philadelphia Phillies    $113,004,046
Houston Astros            $102,996,414
Los Angeles Dodgers    $100,414,592
Seattle Mariners          $98,904,166
Atlanta Braves         $96,726,166
Chicago White Sox    $96,068,500
San Francisco Giants    $82,616,450
Cleveland Indians    $81,579,166
Toronto Blue Jays    $80,538,300
Milwaukee Brewers    $80,182,502
St. Louis Cardinals    $77,605,109
Colorado Rockies      $75,201,000
Cincinnati Reds            $73,558,500
Arizona Diamondbacks    $73,516,666
Kansas City Royals    $70,519,333
Texas Rangers            $68,178,798
Baltimore Orioles       $67,101,666
Minnesota Twins      $65,299,266
Tampa Bay Rays            $63,313,034
Oakland Athletics    $62,310,000
Washington Nationals    $60,328,000
Pittsburgh Pirates    $48,693,000
San Diego Padres    $43,734,200
Florida Marlins            $36,834,000

Neither does Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, Melky Cabrera, Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada or Joba Chamberlain.

I suppose the Angels brought Bobby Abreu, Juan Rivera, Scott Kazmir, Tori Hunter, and Vladimir Guerrero up through their own farm system, right?

And according to your chart the Mets, Cubs, and Red Sox should all be in the playoffs right now over the Phillies, Dodgers and Angels.

Whatever man.  I'm not saying free agency is bad, I'm just saying that the Yankees outspend everyone by a pretty large margin, and that (after a few years of underachieving by their standards) this year they landed the biggest free agents by dropping a small fortune.  I'm stating facts.

And Abreu isn't much of an example... the Yankees dumped him, no one wanted him, and the Angels signed him for a song....  1 year, $5 million.

It was actually some of the role players that won last night's game.  Sure, Alex Rodriguez came through with a clutch home run to keep the Yanks in game 2.  But the guys who finally broke that tie were Jerry Hairston Jr. and Melky Cabrera, not the big names.  And Melky came from the farm system.

As for the payroll?  As a Yankee fan I look around the major leagues and regard some of the other teams.  Some of whom have very rich owners who could spend as much as the Yankees on payroll.  IIRC, the owner of the Twins is probably one of the richest owners in the majors.  Does he put a lot of that money into the team and onto the field?  There's some serious talent on the Twins, and they won their division.  But they didn't advance to the ALCS.  The Mets have a very high payroll, but poor management.  So spending doesn't equate to value.

George Steinbrenner used to drive me absolutely crazy, and when he got banned from baseball I was thankful that he had been shut up.  But he's got a committment to winning that you have to respect, and the willingness to invest in the team.  He sees the players as an investment to get more fans in the stands and to drive up revenues.  Now did the Yanks lay an egg with some of the high priced seats in the new stadium?  Absolutely.  I saw way too many empty seats near the dugouts this season.  Even during playoff games.  The Yanks responded by upgrading people's seats during the game to those seats in an effort to fill some of them, but they could only do so much.  And they're responding by lowering the prices on some of those really expensive seats.

As for Abreu?  I was really surprised that the Angels were able to sign him so cheap.  But he wound up being a solid performer for them this year and earned some of the incentives in his contract.

After watching the Yankees/Twins series and Yankees/Angels series on Fox, I'm pretty sure Skip(is that right?) Carey wants to make sweet passionate love to Derek Jeter. Yes he's a great player, but it isn't amazing that he knows which base to cover, etc.
