I've been rereading my old Marvel comics over the last week or so. My goal is to read the whole series through before getting into the IDW ARAH series. I have read some of the IDW Origins and Cobra books, but stopped when I got to the gaps in my collection and started on the Marvel series.
The early Joe stories from Marvel are kind of interesting because the first 10 books or so really start out before we get into the toy crossovers. There's a lot of goofiness in those books that I never noticed before, like a board listing what Joes were going on a mission, but during the mission one of the Joes ends up being a totally different character. There are also a couple books where people flip back and forth, alternately calling Stalker either "Stalker" or "Ranger."
I'm now up to about issue 16 I think. Now we're getting into the "toy" issues as they're standardizing the Cobra and Joe vehicles and each of the last 2 or 3 books has introduced new Joes that were coming in the toy line, so less green shirt and more specialized outfits.
One of the funniest things, the book I just read was where Cobra invades Washington to plant a toxin in the Treasury Department. Gung-Ho and some other Joes go to stop them, and one of the Joes is Torpedo. He's running around the Treasury building in a wetsuit with flippers and his mask on! It's so ridiculous.
It's been so long since I've read these that I forgot what they were like. I must have only been 12 or 13 maybe when these issues came out. Still, they're fun, just a lot of goofy.
