It's The End of the World As We Know It
« on: September 22, 2003, 01:48 PM »
OK, I've been meaning to post this for a few days but it has completely been forgotten or blocked out

I usually enter the local Wal Marts through the Garden section because it is usually right by the toy aisle.  It is an easy way to avoid the geriatric cart getter and the fat people in the scooters who take up the whole aisle

So as I was walking in last Wednesday as I exit the Garden center and ready my nose for the stench that is Wal-Mart's main showroom I am greeted by a dancing mechanical Santa Claus doing the twist and singing Jingle Bells.

I look at my watch September 17th, only 3 months until Christmas!  It is still SUMMER for cripes sakes!  I do a head jerk and there are 3 aisles already set up for the big event.  I just about lost it right there

Capitalism at its finest...kill me now, I cannot bear 12 more weeks of a dancing Santa Claus.  It used to be Retailers waited until mid November, we have hit a new all time low in the pursuit of your money :( :'(  Somewhere Baby Jesus is indeed crying

Yep, one of the garden centers just outside town up here has a sign that says "Xmas trees - December 1".  At least they're waiting until then, but the notion is out there.

Our Wally's shift seamlessly from back to school (which goes out on the shelves the second week in July) to Halloween (third week in August) to Christmas.  But thus far, we seem to have retained a minimal amount of dignity and I have yet to see any of that sort of paraphenalia and it usually gets put out mid-October.

Contrarily the snowblowers are on display already ::)

Just to show you how disturbed the area I live in is.  They have had Christmas items in the garden center since the beginning of August.  Not much, but enough to ruin the rest of your summer.

Christmas stuff has been in the local Targets, Wal-Marts, and nursery/craft stores for almost an entire month now.  It is truly sickening, and I love the "holidays."

"Maybe it has something to do with the Easter bunny"

"Can't be.  The Easter bunny's down by the food court.  Its been there since two days after Christmas"

 ;)

And don't you hate how they skip from Halloween to right to Christmas?  What about Thanksgiving?  I think turkey's need to get some respect.  I'm going to start a petition forcing stores to recognize the fourth Thursday in November.

Funny, as Patty and I were just commenting on how stupid it was last night at K-mart when we saw that all of the Christmas trees had been put up right next to all of the Halloween supplies...  ::)

I say wait until Nov. 1 to put up all the X-mas stuff at the very least, if not the day after Thanksgiving.  Each of these year end "holidays" should get to enjoy the full month at retail prior to moving onto the next one.  Granted there's not much retail stuff to really do for Thanksgiving, but it just seems like the X-mas retail festivities should start that Friday morning after Thanksgiving, when we're all still hungover and groggy from the triptiphan (sp?)...

I kid you not but the Halloween costumes at Meijers were on clearance already.  Not on sale...clearance...I was puzzled when I saw it and still am.  Heck, I don't think I ever planned a Halloween costume for my kid until two weeks before (and basically it's criteria was that it had to fit over the snowsuit since it was winter by the 31st).

I also heard the Santa at Walmart but it was kind of drowned out by that stupid singing fish that seems to be back in stock at Walmarts across the U.P. again (and every child and grandparent has to press the button when they walk by). :-\

I remember when I was younger (and that wasn't TOO long ago), I thought the day after Thanksgiving was too soon to start Christmas sales.

Now they've moved it back to before Halloween even hits.

Yeesh.

Pretty soon, it'll be after the fourth of July....and then, well, I don't know what'll happen.  :)

You know, this is getting so bad that they just as well not even bother to take it down and put it up year after year.
