Very cool.  Glad you like it.  I've been a fan of their's since '97, when I first heard Being There--their second record.

I might recommend starting with that one--first of all, it's a double record, so you get a lot of music for a pretty good price.  And secondly, it's maybe a more traditional record, at least compared to their last three (Summer Teeth, YHF, and AGIB).  Lots of straight-up rock, and some alt.country thrown in for good measure.  Check out "Misunderstood", "Sunken Treasure", and "The Lonely 1".

Summer Teeth was their third record, released in '99:

Sometimes I love this record, sometimes I hate it.  Fairly big departure from Being There--probably more slick and poppy.  For some reason, this record reminds me of the Beach Boys.  Download "Via Chicago", "A Shot in the Arm", and "ELT".

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was their fourth--finished (and leaked) in mid-2001, but released in 2002 (same day all the Episode II crap came out, actually):

My favorite record ever.  Even more of a departure from Summer Teeth than from ST from Being There.  A documentary film was even created about the trials and tribulations of the making of this album, and all the troubles they went through trying to get it released.  Highlights include "I am Trying to Break Your Heart", "I'm the Man Who Loves You", and "Reservations".

Haven't mentioned their first album yet--because it's my least favorite of them.  Released in 1995, following the break-up of Jeff Tweedy's first group, Uncle Tupelo:

Decent record, just not very distinctive.  More straight-up rock/alt.country than anything else.  "Casino Queen" is good, and "Dash 7" is still one of my favorite songs of theirs.

Tweedy's a genius.  Some day, I'll get into the whole Uncle Tupelo backstory, along with all of the other side projects he's done over the years.

Let's do the Time Warp again!!![/size]

(I'm trying to think of a good "Hey, 1982 called. . ." joke--can't come up with a decent punchline, though. . .)

I did hear, though, that Steve Perry has this totally rad song coming out called "Oh Sherry".  I'm going out to try and find the 45!  Bye!

yuck  :P

Yeah, I knew I was subjecting myself to some serious ridicule there with a few of those!   ;)  Keep in mind though, that the wife was my painting assistant, so the music had to be suitable for her too.  Ah, who the hell am I kidding?  I would've been listening to that $h!t anyway...   :P  But if it makes any of you any happier, Patty did throw on some Guns N Roses later on in the day.   8)  Of course, sticking with the theme, it was their new Greatest Hits album...   :-*

right now:

just finished:

up next:

Yuck is right, ya' freakin' head banger!   :-*

BTW Matt, I've heard that Oh Sherrie song, and it is indeed hella rad.  I strongly suggest you go find yourself a copy right quick.  If you have any trouble tracking one down, I'd be happy to loan you my 45 once I've listened to it a couple dozen more times.  Just LMK...

I picked this up yesterday on the advice of a friend...let me say I am totally gaa gaa over this band now.  Its hard to peg but its a perfect blend of a lot of musical tastes I have...Neil Young is really evident and for that alone I'm really digging it, really really am.

When I listened today it sort of was the same way I felt when I first listened to Ben Harper a few years ago...the range of musical style and songwriting is so amazing.  For some strange reason I got a little twinges of different bands here and there...I kept thinking of Izzy Stradlin' for some reason too.  Not sure why...some parts Black Crowes some parts...Paul Westerberg...Neil, lots of Neil (Piano and Hammond Organ) only with a better voice behind the song...the Beatles...the Stones...little Sesame Street riffs...amazing stuff

BTW...not sure if anyone here is familiar with The Gear Daddies who were pretty big round these parts...if you are Hockey fan you've probably heard their song "I wanna drive the Zamboni"  There's some similarities there too...

Sounds silly, but the first time I ever heard Being There, just a few songs in, I kind of had an idea that this was the perfect music for me and they were my new favorite band.  And it was a totally-blind purchase for me.  Hadn't heard any of their stuff--just read a small review in a local magazine.  And I've kind of been hooked ever since.

Yeah, I totally hear you on the influences there.  You can hear a lot of sixties Stones in their first couple of records (especially A.M..  Like I mentioned, I hear a lot of Beach Boys in Summer Teeth, and there's one song on the new record ("Hummingbird") that Lennon/McCartney should be collecting royalties for. . .  I hear Neil Young-style guitar playing all over the new record.  And I know exactly what you're referring to by "little Sesame Street riffs", too--just can't remember the specific song right now, but yeah, it's there.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is the one album of theirs that I really couldn't nail down.  With that record, I couldn't say, "oh, they sound like X band here", or "wow, that's where the Y band influences really come in".  It's kind of it's own album.  Same great songwriting as before, but with a lot of interesting little effects and whatnot (Tweedy has referred to the "holes" in the music on that album).  Makes for an interesting listen.  Took me a few times to get into it, but once I did, it was great.

Since you liked Being There so much, I would definitely recommend picking up either Summer Teeth or YHF next, if you haven't already.

Seriously, let me know if you're interested in more.  Uncle Tupelo, Tweedy's first band, are generally considered the group that started the alt.country genre, and released four really good albums in the early 90's.  Wilco and Billy Bragg (along with one of your favorites, Natalie Merchant), got together a few years ago to put music to a bunch of Woody Guthrie lyrics for two albums, Mermaid Avenue I and II.  They're both really good--almost as good as the individual Wilco albums, and definitely worth checking out.  Tweedy has also done some other side projects over the years (Golden Smog, with Soul Asylum's Dave Pirner and several others--kind of a Travelling Wilburys feel), and Loose Fur, among others, which are all pretty good, too.

And check out their record, A.M., too--I kind of slagged it off as my least favorite Wilco record, and that's true, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad record at all.  It just really speaks to how good the other records have been.  A.M. is great, and is easily worth a purchase, especially if you liked the more classic Stones/Beatles-sounding stuff on Being There.

Will comply.

I just cannot for the life of me get into Dylan, I've tried and tried, I just don't like him...

I was listening to Sarah McLesbian McLachlan Afterglow earlier while playing some Tiger Woods Goff

Sarah McLesbian McLachlan

McLesbian!

Genius!  Don't tell me you came up with that all by your damn self.  No, what witty comedian did you steal that little nugget from?

As for Dylan--he's an acquired taste.  Maybe the best songwriter of the 20th century, but the ramshackle guitar playing and the questionable (at best) singing voice throw some folks off (maybe rightfully so).

Still, songs like "Buckets of Rain" and "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" might as well be the soundtrack of my life. . .
