What's your price?
« on: January 2, 2004, 10:43 PM »
Ok, today I interviewed at a company, and had a day long experience with them. It was a horrible experience.

First, let's talk about the pay structure. The company advances very quickly, and within 2 or so years, you can be making well over 200K, within 15-20 years, a lot of people retire (in theory, you could retire at 35, and some have). However, this job, and all of the people, basically represent everything I hate. I would hate myself for working at a job like this, but at the same time, the money looks amazing. I had to give an immediate answer to what my intentions were, and ultimately I turned them down. The gold looked great, but how great is money if you hate yourself for the way you earned it? I dont need to go into details, but these people are wholly unethical, unprofessional, discourteous, and generally unpleasent people with the attitude of kids. Basically, they are bratty spoiled middle school kids, but older and with a lot of money.

So, was it the right decision? How much would it cost you to throw away all of your ethics and beliefs? Does the idea of retiring before your 50 sound so good that you'd become a person you hate?

I guess it would depend on what it was that I was not liking specifically... I suppose I would need a more specific example to tell you if I would turn it down or not.

Well Im not saying this job specifically, but what price would it take for a person in general to take on a job that represented most everything they hate, either in other people or in themselves.

I think you made a decision that very few people could make, given the money you mentioned.  That would be the right decision.  I am unsure if I could do it.

More details would be helpful for a more confident reply though.

I don't know that there are a lot of jobs that people end up loving.  You can hate it and be paid little or hate it and be paid a lot.  Still, ethically you done good.

I have the same dilema. My mothers husband offered me a job making 600+ dollars a week, and some over time, durring the summer. I really resent the man, and everything he stands for, but with that kind of money, its tempting.

Oh well.

Ill probobly say no.

I would end up skewering him with a fork lift.

I really enjoy what I do for a living, I work for the Canadian Fed Govt, my job is stuctured but not a daily grind, but I would like to eventually work for myself, that way I can set my own price, standards and ethic. I turned down a job that I could have been making $200 000 a year at, and have not looked back because it was dangerous. I have a son that I would like to see grow up. I might regrete it in the short term but not the big picture.

Wow, definitely a dilemma there Adam.  And you've certainly peeked our curiosity as to what the heck this job was.  My only guess would be something in the porn industry...   :-[  I do recall you being interested in becoming a photographer, I think.

But man, $200 grand is a lot of money, and a lot of Star Wars collectibles - including the super high end stuff!   8)  I'd have had a very hard time turning that kind of money down.  Very hard.  So I guess that'd be my answer since I don't know more details.  $200K would probably be my price.

So tell me, is this something that others could be doing in other areas as well?  Do I need specific training for it?  Where do I apply...?   ;D

I guess $200,000 would be my price, because I'd have taken the job as soon as I heard the salary. But, I'm the kind of guy who willingly told a cashier a wrong, cheaper price for Marvel Legends. This whole Missing Integrity thing has gone too far methinks.
