Poker
« on: January 5, 2004, 12:17 AM »
I played a version of the World Series of Poker last night ($5 a guy x 10 guys) and it was an absolute blast.  Unfortunately it took forever to get to the end and I was on kid detail this morning so I had my piss poor brother take over for me when I left at 1 AM.  I was in 2nd place at the time.  I guess he took 4th out of 10, there went my $45.

I have been watching the WS of Poker off and on the last few months and find it to be awesome.  We used to play poker for Baseball Cards back in the day and also for pennies and nickles in High School and College.  I miss those days...anyone else play cards regularly?

Hey, I did apologize, didn't I?

Hey, gotta tap into my inner Hung Solow, crappy, sexually-oriented bag of "jokes" every once in a while. . .

Poker!   8)

Every month, a bunch of us get together for for friendly Poker. Whos ever house its at, delegates the players as what to bring for the menu & its all put together for a feast halfway through the game. Now this is not big money Poker here. The buy in is $5. & if you loose your money, you get one more buy in of $5. Hey, cheaper than going to a movie!  ;)

Average, 6-8 players. 1st person to deal picks his game for 3 rounds & passes the cards to the next player & he can stick with the same game or choose another Poker game, then passed on to the next etc...

Interesting games & hands can be played. The games we play the most are Anaconda, Baseball, Chicago (high/low), Five Card Draw, Follow the Queen, Jacks or Better, Let It Ride, Omaha & my favorite 7 Card Stud.

World Series of Poker, I have not seen a game in awhile, guess I'll have to check Sportsnet.  ;)

Bob Stupak still around?

I'm more of a blackjack person myself (in a casino), but do enjoy the occasional get together.  We usually play quarters, but sometimes the stakes are a little higher. I also like watching the World Series of Poker on ESPN and Poker Night  on the Travel Channel, I believe.  Ladies night was pretty entertaining.

Guess I was a little ahead of my time on this one...but Poker is raging across the land in large part thanks to the success of the WSoP on ESPN.

i'm sorry but poker does not belong on espn. or espn 2 for that matter. remember when they used to show actual sports?

they should push it to espn 8 "the ocho".

ya know i agree that poker shouldn't be on espn or espn2 or any sports channel, but i've found myself more and more recently stopping at any channel showing a hand and i get drawn into it.

as for playing, myself and a few friends from my old job get together about 5-6 times a year for sessions that have been known to go for 8 hours.  some of the games we play include your standard 7 card stud, blackjack, texas hold em, as well as variants of other games which you may know as something else, but we call em: black mariah, pass the cud, extreme, between the sheets, criss-cross and more... we don't play for hjgh stakes, the highest pot i can recall was about $60 from a game of black mariah. usually we do 25 cent antes, with nothing higher than a $2 bet off a bump, but the games sure can get heated. we should be playing a game sometime next month, in the meantime i've got a game with some old college buddies of mine in 2 weeks and i'll be showing them a lot of these games, and hopefully taking their money as well. :)

Our local Access, The Education Station had the World Poker Tour on last night. First time I saw it listed in the tv guide so I set the VCR, I haven't watched it yet.

Does poker qualify as a sport?

This is one of my biggest peeves.  I like poker as much as the next guy (okay, maybe a little bit less than the next guy, but it is absolutely not a sport.

Quote
sport    ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (spôrt, sprt)
n.

1.  Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
2.  A particular form of this activity.
3.  An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
An active pastime; recreation.

Now you might be able to get into the lesser definitions of sport and get to a point where you can make an argument that it's a sport, but sports involve athleticism.  IMO.  It's a game, a mental challenge, a skill (reading opponents), but It's no sport.

Which is why this bothers me:

They've got a petition to get poker into the Olympics.

Give me a freakin' break...  ::)

Just finished watching the World Poker Tour on TV a short time ago. Speaking of Poker, at work during lunch hour a bunch of us (6-8 shooters) head to our secret hiding spot and break out the cards for a fun buy in of $5. of Texas Holdem.

With 6 players the pay out is $25. for 1st place and $5. for 2nd. 8 players, the pay out is $25. for 1st place, $10. for second and $5. for 3rd. depending on the time factor of that 1 hour that we have time to play and how many are actually left.

This adds up after a week of playing everyday, so far I have been playing for 2 weeks and have only come in 2nd place a couple of times and got my buy in back.

Lot's of fun and very popular this game has been getting as time goes on.

Another week comes and more Poker to be had.
