The Academy Awards (and Golden Globes)

Glad to see ROTK (LOTR) getting it's due finally.  11 for 11...  Not too shabby!    Can anyone refresh my memory on how many they won for the first two movies?  I know they got fairly shunned, but I don't recall how badly now.

As for the show itself, it wasn't great, but there were some entertaining moments, topped by Adrien Brody's binaca spray.  I hit the floor in hysterics when he did that!    I also enjoyed the "Return of the Host" intro with Billy, the Mighty Wind performance, the You're Boring song, and especially the clip where Michael Moore gets stomped.  That was a classic!

I was disappointed the Best Actor award didn't go to either Depp or Murray though, but other than that, no major gripes.  I just would've hated to be another movie competing against the steamroller that was ROTK last night.  Why weren't Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli there though?  That was weak...  I see Russell Crowe was boycotting the show too.

BTW, gotta agree with Billy - way to really go out on a limb there 4-LOSW Jr.

My wife and I were wondering the same thing, where the rest of the cast from LOTR was.  I can only assume they were filming a movie somewhere or something along those lines, because you would sure think more of them would have been there otherwise.

Back on topic now, I am really glad that Return of the King won what it did.  I really went into the night hoping that it would win best picture, and Jackson would win best director.  To go 11 for 11 is just outstanding, and very deserved I think.  We finally got a chance to sit down and watch the EE of FOTR (TTT is next weekend hopefully), and it just amazes me how great each of these movies is.  There isn't a stinker in the bunch, and I think that is a true credit to Tolkien, Peter Jackson, and the entire cast and crew.  It isn't a movie trilogy where I would say "nah, let's watch one of the other ones", because they are all very well done, in my opinion.  Anyways, very happy for all those involved, they deserve all the credit in the world.

Also...I was hoping that Depp or Murray would have gotten best actor, but I guess I wasn't surprised they didn't.

it was great to see rotk get 11 oscars. but why didn't they get a nomination for best cinematography? i was kinda confused by that... that would have made 12.

So ROTK by itself has eclipsed all 3 movies...I do think TPM should have beaten The Matrix in the effects department IMO, the stuff in The Matrix was great but I didn't see any realistic looking CGI doofuses running around, if Jar Jar was respectable they would have won for sure

This thread is ancient...but it is good to recycle.

So anyway, I'm looking at the Golden Globe nominations this morning and I can't believe that it was so hard to find five differnent women they could nominate for best actress in a comedy or musical that they had to nominate Streep twice.

And where the hell was District 9?  One nod for screenplay?  Come on.  Is there some crappy rule that disqualified it from film and director nominations?  But Avatar, which looks to have a cookie cutter plot, does?

And why wasn't The Shield nominated for anything?  Or at least Walt Goggins for supporting honors?

I used to like the Golden Globes because they seemed to do a better job than the Academy, but I think they missed this year.

My big problem are films getting nominations before they are even released (Avatar ).  I was disappointed that the Shield was not nominated but the finale was so long ago and most people forgot about the show.  Come to think of it, was the finale even in '09?  I was disappointd that Breaking Bad had no nominations either.

You know what?  The Shield did end in 2008.  My bad.  I looked at the date wrong.  I thought the final episodes aired after the first of the year.  Still...

No science fiction film has ever won an Oscar for Best Picture. This might be interesting as 2 are running plus for the 1st time since 1943, the Oscars feature 10 best-picture contenders instead of the usual five.

Can Cameron be back on top & belt out those words... "I'm King of the ********!"

In recent years the Academy Awards race has become too elitist, a competition of high-falutin’ but little-seen titles that most moviegoers have barely heard of.

Expanding the roster to 10 nominees would allow a broader range of films to be considered, including some popular with general audiences. That in turn will entice more of us to tune in for the big Oscar broadcast on March 7.

I would love to see either Up, District 9, or Basterds get the Best Picture award. They were all pretty solid films. I haven't seen Blind Side or The Hurt Locker, but I've heard both were very good and look forward to seeing both when the DVDs get cheaper.

I really hope Avatar doesn't win Best Picture. It's an overhyped film with a hackneyed plot. The acting was okay, but the VFX were really the only place where it shined. I can't say I'm surprised to see it among the nominees, but there are much better films that deserve that award.

Man, I'd love it if Basterds won.  That's probably my top film of 2010.  I agree that Avatar doesn't deserve it.
