'I am Saddam Hussein, the president of Iraq'
« on: July 1, 2004, 02:01 PM »
So whats going to happen:

1.  Death Penalty
2.  Life in Prison
3.  Attempt to Escape via Al Queda or other Extremist Group

Not sure if anyone followed any of the court proceedings today, but its obvious that the guy is an obvious paranoid schizo and quite insane at that.

Personally, #1 wouldn't bother me in the slightest but would be the easy way out for him, #2 could work as long as he rots and hope #3 doesn't happen.

I just have this weird feeling that something strange is gonna happen with the whole trial.  Escape isn't out of the picture

You can probably rule out no.3 since they loathe one another.

I’ll go with no.1- tis’the gallows for that wretched soul! (though it wouldn’t surprise me if he gets life… for some reason, criminal dictators possess uncanny luck with defense lawyers- y’all remember Pinochet?)

My thoughts exactly.  I can see a few suicide missions prolonging this trial for years.

Man, did I ever want to start a thread about this at RS today, but we don't allow em anymore.  ;D

Just looking and listening to the guy, I kept thinking...this doesn't seem real. They're hiding the judge (probably for fear of retribution against him) and it seems like people are still treating him with reverence. I was suprised he didn't get charged with contempt (Or whatever the Iraqi version of that is) for talking back.

I kept waiting to see them say "One more outburst, and we're taking your finger off!" but apparently, the democracy we installed over there doesn't play like that.  :)

My prediction is that he is found guilty (of course) and is given a life sentence rather than a death penalty. In the back of my mind, I also think something's going to happen (Bombing, kidnapping, escape, whatever) that is going to turn him into a martyr and make things all the worse off.

There's the look of a sane man if I ever saw it.

A life sentence may be more dangerous than a death sentence because of the risk of potential sympathy over time, his ability to communicate to the outside world, things along those lines. If they want to move past this guy they have to put him down.

I agree. Personally, I think the soldiers should have capped his ass when they found him and said he resisted arrest.

But, they want to make a spectacle of the guy. The trouble is, there are still people over there that love him, respect him, fear him (whatever) and the longer he's around the deeper their sympathies may get.

While the death penalty is certainly warranted....will it actually be handed down? We'll have to wait and see.

Why the first soldier who found him didn't put two slugs in his head and let him slink back down into his hole, cover it up, and claim that Hussein went for the pistol tucked in his belt...I'll never know.
