250 years of French & Indian action!
« on: April 14, 2004, 03:34 PM »
Errr, no it's not a porn site I'm promoting, but rather the 250th anniversary of the French & Indian War!!!  Yes, that's right.  How time flies!

Anyone else excited? :)

No?  Bah!  I hate you all...  This is big news to a lot of us in the NorthEast, sort of...  And Canda's Eastern pieces.

A link for you all from Pittsburgh...

http://livesite.pittsburghlive.com/x/tribune-review/living/vignettes/s_110773.html

Of note, the actual area of downtown Pittsburgh was a fort established by the french as Fort Duquesne (Duquesne university ring a bell?), which later was captured by the English and renamed Fort Pitt, and thus the surrounding area became the city of Pittsburgh.

My area's dotted with Indian names, battlefields, and is still kind of considered one of the "keys" to controlling the United States (from a strategic military point of view).

Lots of interesting things, to maybe someone interested in military history.

Well Jesse of the Long Carabine, I'll join in with some celebratory actions with you....

Nothing like getting into the leggings, the loin cloth and grabbing the "war club", while we talk of Kan-tu-kay....

I think that the French Indian Wars are the most interesting pre-Civil War military battles in our (US) history.  Great names, great leaders. Sets the stage nicely for the Revolution.

Unfortunately, not enough info (books, Movies, History Channel) is based on this period, since it seems to have lost out to other Topical areas like the Alamo, the Civil War and that guy with the funny moustache in 1940's Germany...

It's good to see someone interested. :)

I used to re-enact for the F&I War with a light Scottish Highland regiment...  Very informal...  Kind of the original "Commando Units" for the period.

I'm sure it's gonna be a year chalk full of re-enactments, but I wouldn't have the time, nor inclination to spend the entire day in a wool kilt, which would happen every weekend this summer I think.  Spares me the pain by taking summer classes I guess.  :)

I read a book on Washington, Adams and Jefferson last year and was intrigued at Washington's small role in the War and how much it influenced him to get involved in the Revolution.  Plus at the time how much of a wilderness East of the Appalachians actually was at the time...its amazing to think of and something I often do...try and picture what the local area was like 150-200 years ago

The French are regarded as some of the fiercest combatants in history actually.  They supplied the budding United States with Naval blockades and infantry in support against the British.

The French Resistance fighters of WW2 were regarded with fear among the German occupants of France due to the (at times) ruthless means with which they handled their opponents.

The French soldiers of World War I also were held in high regard defending their country.

Too often their contribution in WW2 is overlooked, as they actually did a lot of fighting in Europe and N. Africa, as did many other overrun countries (Poland, etc.) after being harbored in England.

In the F&I war, the French were regarded as nearly as "savage" as the Indians, as French Colonials and fur traders were some of the first whites to employ the "ungentlemanly" (though intelligent) combat tactics the Indians used.  They would perform hit & fade missions befre the tactic even had a name.

 I know, I know.

I'm thinking that sometime in the future I might join a reenactment. I know that some of the Civil War ones down this way are pretty good. However, I think that if I was to ever to get into the reenactment gigs, I'd want to progress howard in history, maybe starting at the Battle of Cowpens (since it's only 10 miles away)

What's your suggestion, JJ? Are reenactments fun?

Are reenactments fun?

Oh most definately....

I have been a WWII re-enactor for over a decade (I spent my High School Grad $$ on the stuff to get started).......

And I actually just got back from a Vietnam Re-enactment 3 hours ago....

You learn so many more details if you do live it as oppossed to read it, like how does a C-Rat taste when it has been in a sock all day?

Some buddies and I were talking about F&I this weekend actually, but from Texas all the good events would definately be a weeks worth of vacation....  But we want to carry the Long Car-a-been...

It depends on the group as to whether re-enactments are fun or not really...

Like for me, the F&I stuff was great because our group's a light highland regiment (very small participation though), so our dress-code's loose and our equipment list is varied...  For instance, I carried a pistol and my Irish Broadsword most of the time as opposed to a rifle...  My kilt didn't match anyone else's...  My shirt was handmade, and I didn't have a jacket till I was nearing the end of my time in the group (I haven't participated in 2 years).

For the Civil War, my group was terribly strict though (though large), and were anal if you wore something even slightly off what they considered "official".  They could be real dicks about it actually.  I wanted to wear a brimmed hat, something non-military, because of the sun and they insisted on the bummer which I liked aesthetically and in cooler temps but not at Gettysburg in July, ya know?  They insisited though...

The F&I group I participated with were very casual, but OTHER groups hated us.  Usually the French and Indian groups didn't mind us, but local British units or actual Blackwatch units despised us and said we weren't authentic.  We simply weren't authentic to THEIR regiment, and they seemed almost offended to be told that there were light highland regiments that were considered sort of "special forces" groups.

Some people take this **** too seriously would be the point, and they can ruin the fun.

I know some WW2 re-enactors who take a nutty on the slightest thing...  I know some guys in the SCA who look down on anyone who doesn't have an authentically woven piece of clothing, or who have purchased armor instead of hand-made stuff.

As with anything, some jagoffs can screw up the fun, but in my F&I experiences it was really not bad at all.  most people enjoyed the "colorful" look to our group...  Very hap-hazard and a variety of weapons.  Even a small cannon was part of our gear.   ;D
