General Jan the Man
« on: April 27, 2004, 04:56 PM »
Just a quick review of General Jan Dodonna. I picked him up some time ago along with Dutch and Antilles, but it has taken some time to get this old timer online.

I really like that they made Dodonna. It’s nice to have another high ranking rebel around, and my kids like that the Imperials have someone new to capture.

First, he has a somewhat odd arm sculpt, which is great for holding his belly during a good laugh or supporting his head while relaxing and watching clouds on a summer day... Along with all the other officer slackers...

....But bad for aiming at Jawas who panhandle on the streets of Mos Eisley asking for spare medallions. It's a given that figures with molded robes usually cannot sit worth a darn, but they should at least be able to shoot straight. Jan Dodonna is pretty worthless in the department of self defense.

The paint is generally good, not too much and accurate in color. The one exception is his hair. It looks like it was applied by a five year old using a squirming young kitten dipped in paint. Which may not be too far off the mark these days.

General Rieken was quick to point out the bad hair coloring to his buddy Jan. He had to. It was beginning to distract the troops, and moreover morale was taking a hit.

So Antilles offered to  take Jan to see Rystall and Greeta around the corner at their hair shop, hoping they could help his buddy with a better dye job.

Sadly for our man Jan, she was unwilling to accept Rebel medallions as payment. They're just not worth what they used to be with the fall of the Empire and all. The trip wasn't a total waste though, Antilles was able to use a gift certificate for a good scalp massage and some products.

Hair aside, this figure was made to do great things. This figure was made to give out medals. And lay on his back watching clouds. And if Hasbro ever makes one, look nervously at a war table or screen on Yavin IV.

Many have speculated that since he comes with three count 'em three, all together now... three medals that Lucas may be giving Chewie a medal in the further adapted "special edition and beyond" dvd release. Here's a smuggled out screen capture of the edited scene:

Purists on the other hand should not be alarmed. By hiding the "extra" medal, it is still possible to reenact the scene as originally presented (see below).

*Other lazy figures, Antilles, John Kerry, dancers and awards people (well, basically any figure that is not Jan Dodonna) are sold separately from the figure being reviewed.

NIce review sir :D  Pictures are very well done.  But here I'd thought all along that Porkins had died :-\  After all that he lives?  Maybe it's a sweater phenomenon?

Thanks everybody. I have fun with these. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but what else is new?

I don't know what Jek is doing in that picture. Just remember that it's the yet-to-be-released-even-more "improved" dvd "special special" edition. Who knows, maybe Lucas changes it so Jek not only survives, but is the one who blows up the Death Star...

I've been asked nicely yelled at to use my photoshop skills for good... ;)

Great job of course, Dp.  But what happened to the "wet-willy" shot?!   8)

That's Ozzel. Thanks. Care to spill the ending of EP III while you're at it? I can't tell you anything! :-*

You know, I expected something funny - your reviews are always funny - but I didn't expect something funny enough to make me choke on my A&W... and that stuff burns up the nose, man.

I guess I just wasn't expecting the whole animated sequence with General Jan's hair and General Kerry Reikan.

Anycrap, great review. I still haven't decided if I want to pick this up or not... Maybe. Maybe not. He's a pretty plain figure, but he was a plain character, too.  :-\
