Your Favortie Artists
« on: July 11, 2004, 05:28 PM »
I really like me some DaVinci who was the epitome of art.  But there are some talented people out there amoung our own community who are also top shelf...Mister Bill Cable comes to mind.  I really admire the stuff Brad, Thomas and Bob Crane have shown us.  As well as some of the pictures Boba Shek have drawn.  Anyone else have anyone to add?

Dave Dorman (2 signed prints) -Sweet oil painter, he's done a ton of covers for Star Wars books/comics/etc.

Tim Bradstreet (signed comic) -One of my favorite artists, he's done most, or even all of, the recent Punisher comics.

James O'Barr (signed print)-Creator of 'The Crow' comic, his comic took 9 years to create - so it's something of an inspiration to watch how his ink-work improved over the years.

Thomas Grey (nothing yet  >:() - soon to be a house-hold name!

Other artists I like...

Elyn Zimmerman
Beverly Pepper
Auguste Rodin
Todd McFarlane
DaVinci
Doug Wildey
Jack Kirby
Numerous photographers...

My favorite at the moment is Dave Stevens -

Mostly known for The Rocketeer, he's an excellent artist that's produced some great pinup images and awesome mixed-media.

I very much like the work of artists such as Goya, Dali and M.C. Escher.  I enjoy Michael Parkes' art as well.

i'm really into the anime style as far as comics and stuff go, so guys like adam warren, joe maduiera, humberto ramos, etc are all faves of mine. i also was big into todd macfarlane (when he used to actually draw), and greg capullo who took over for mcf was good too. some of the other image guys - jim lee and silvestri especially always did good work. michael turner just did a great job with a 6 issue story arc in the 3 superman titles that was pretty good too.

i'm also into some of the old school artists - again, as far as comics go - neal adams, john byrne, bernie wrightson, joe kubert (his kids ain't half bad either).

m.c. escher, salvador dali, h.r. giger... i could go on and on. i like art  :D

I love art as well.  I love the classics like da Vinci or Vermeer, Maxfield Parrish, the Hildebrandts, I love it all.  I like Escher and Giger, too.  I love Dave McKean.  Fantastic artist.  I love too many comic artists to mention.

I went to Italy 3 years ago after being obsessed with my art history and minoring in it in college. Everywhere I went (Florence, Venice, Sienna, Padua & Rome) I tried to find the guy that I could somehow like better than Michelangelo. In Florence I was smitten with Fra Angelico and Donatello but then I saw David and it just demolished everything else. I was on a Donatello kick and in the Duomo Museo in Florence and as I reach the top of a staircase, there is Michelangelo's last sculpture of Christ being taken down from the cross and a self-portrait as Nicadimus. I almost fell down the stairs.

The Pieta made me weep in awe that so much faith could be portrayed in a sculpture. The Sistine Chapel ceiling was also too much for my brain. The guy was unbelievable. And while I like della Fracesca, da Vinci, Botticelli, Mantegna, Massacio, Bernini and manny others (Titian), Michelangelo hit a high that only he could reach.

I will include my other list of artists I adore, but it's so damn hard and I start leaving people out and crap! Why'd you do this to me Scott?!!

Please excuse any speeling errors (I'm sure I'm leaving out many) I am listing 'fine artists' for now and not including fantasy art, comic art...)

These are my favorites (as a sculptor):
Joseph Cornell
Umberto Boccionni
Edward Keinholz
Alexander Calder

Giotto
Brunelleschi
Castagna
Raphael
El Greco
Albrecht Durer
Michelangelo Carravagio
Jan Vermeer
Rembrandt Van Rijn
Diego Velasquez
Francisco de Goya
Claude Monet
Edvard Manet
Paul Cezanne
Vincent Van Gogh
Di Chirico
Pablo Picasso
Georges Braque
Henri Matisse
Wasily Kandinsky
Marcel Duchamp
Joan Miro
Salvador Dali
Rene Magritte
Kurt Schwitters
Brancussi
Jackson Pollack
Willem de Kooning
Georgia O'Keefe
Nevelson
Frieda Kahlo
Sally Mann
Max Ernst
David Hockney
Francis Bacon
Andy Warhol
Frank Stella
Roy Lichtenstien
Charles Ray
Damian Hirst
Philip Guston
Rauschenburg
Jasper Johns
George Segal
Paul Klee
Walter Anderson

Illustration/Pulp Art/Fantasy:
Maurice Sendak
Bill Peete
Dr. Suess
Hildebrandt brothers
Frank Frazetta
Dennis Beauvias

Comic/Cartoon art:
Jack Cole
Will Eisner
Berni Wrightson

Carl Barks
Charles Burns
Daniel Clowse
Art Speigelman
Alex Ross
Frank Miller
Steve Rude
Don Martin

All for now...

I remember studying the Pieta for a week in High School, it truly is one of the greatest works of all time

I loved my Humanities Class in 11th Grade.  One of my all time greatest learning experiences...the Greek and Roman Classics, The Renaissance, Architecture, Opera, Classical Music...I wanted to take another class in college but could never fit it in between the Organic Chemistry and Physics and Linear Algebra. >:(

I was hoping someone would mention Hodges...he's doing an Ice Cream Maker Guy Card!!!

I stood infront of that piece for about an hour one time when I was living in Rome.

Stunning.

But I think Moses (also in Rome) is even more stunning.
