Well that's quite the scam then isn't it.  Charge people a bunch of money for an opinion, an acrylic case, and a piece of tape.

That sums up the whole idea for me pretty well.  I think it functions on the assumption that the AFA at least has half a clue, which they probably do, so you get a figure pretty close to what you're expecting.  Me, I'd rather pay a lot less from an auction with good pictures, but whatever.

Plus I don't trust AFA.  A guy I know pretty well from the snowtroopers board sent in his Toy Fair Vader to be graded and is absolutely certain that the one they sent back wasn't his it graded so low.  And this guy isn't an amateur or new collector either.  He grades honestly and reasonably and has been collecting for a very long time.  Quite the vintage collection as well.  So basically AFA scammed at least one person out of a figure and I'd bet they do it more often than we'd like.

How's that for casting (largely) unfound aspersions?

I would love to have the Vader, but i would prefer if the saber was all out instead of in when shown in the case.

I'd love to have the Vader too, but $3800 is where I draw the line on insane Star Wars spending.

I felt flat-out stupid when I spent $250 on the Boba Fett Mini Bust.

And I'm going to feel stupid when I buy Yak Face and a Blue Snag.

I'd bust that Vader out of the AFA case and put the saber back in his arm where it belongs.  ::)

SEARS CANADA EXCLUSIVE 3 PACK CANADIAN ESB

What's really unfortunate about this particular auction is that the figures shown in the box never came with this set when they were originally sold. The damage to the box was not mentioned in the auction description either. I can't tell, but it also looks like the plastic sheet that should be covering the window is also missing.

Ouch.  That's just not cool.  I guess it's tough for us to know whether he bought that item from someone else and didn't know it's history, or if he manipulated it himself.  Hopefully, it's the former, I'd hate to see a fellow Canuck screwing others over.  (Yeah, maybe I'm a little naive...)

Unfortunately, the seller knew very well what he was selling. I had spoken with him about this before, and I also e-mailed him while the auction was still ongoing to encourage him to update the description to reflect the fact that the figures being sold with the set did not originally come with the set.

These 1982 Sears Canada 3-Packs *only* came in 2 different sets (shown below):
