What vintage figures are better done than modern?

Now that I am nearly complete my vintage collection, I feel it reasonable to ask this question.  My early impression of vintage figures is that in general the sculpts were lacking relative to some of the modern counterparts.  In my mind, it was lacking with respect to many of the modern figures and for the most part, aside from the nostalgia standpoint, it remains so.  That said, I am curious if anyone feels any of the vintage sculpts are still better than the modern versions?  

I'll have to check again at home, but the one that stands out most in my mind is the Imperial Gunner.  Possibly the A-wing pilot, mostly because the POTF2 pack in seems to suck wind.  Ewoks are not as well done, but more diverse.  Amanaman seems darn near identical in many respects.

I prefer the vintage Bib, although this is partially because the POTF2 sculpt is particularly bollocks.

That's a simple question to answer, The Emperor's Royal Guard. Hasbro has had two instances to make this figure and neither time could they capture the enveloping presence of the ERG. It's the cloth cape which completely covers the ERG that makes the Kenner figure superior to any modern version at this time. As for the mask Kenner got it right in 83 and Hasbro has as well in 97 and 02.

Bib Fortuna, the Royal Guard, and I will add Jabba the Hutt. The new one is cool but whats the deal nothaving the base. Come on Hasbro!

I'll ditto the Royal Guard, the use of soft goods on this figure is both warranted and looks great

Yoda most definitely, its amazing Kenner was able to capture the spirit of the little green guy almost perfectly while Kenner/Hasbro has had almost 20 chances and still can't get it quite right



I think if they would fix the eyes (make them Muppety) and paint him the right color, the latest VOTC version would have done the job and might have beaten Vinty Yoda...too bad they mucked it up again

I agree Scott, it has always amazed me that Hasbro couldn't get a Yoda quite right in the modern line.  Usually it seems like "aliens" are easier to sculpt accurately than humans, but they haven't been able to get them quite right (the OTC and vOTC versions are the best so far though in the modern line, and considerable improvements).

That said, Yoda is a vintage figure that was done about perfectly for the time, and the Royal Guard is another one that I enjoy quite a bit.  The use of soft goods seemed to work almost better back in the vintage days, maybe because we didn't expect as much then.  The Trenchcoat (Endor) Han was my favorite figure as a kid, and they still haven't gotten it quite right in the modern line (although the sculpting has obviously improved).

Yeah, I'd definitely agree on the likes of Yoda and the Emperor's Royal Guard.  The vintage Ugnaught is pretty competitive too.  Those are the ones that really still stand the test of time IMO, and sadly to say, beat anything Hasbro's come up with all their new modern technologies...

Agreed 100%. Also going to agree on Jabba, the Royal guard, Bib Fortuna, Nikto  ,  and I'll add to the list...
