Sad to hear about R. Lee Ermey. He brought something so visceral to the screen in Full Metal Jacket. And it wasn't until years after I had seen the movie that I learned how intrinsic he was to the first half of the movie. Evidently, Stanley Kubrick had brought him on to the production as an advisor while he was casting the film. He impressed Kubrick so much that he wound up giving the role of Sergeant Hartman to Ermey, and even let him write a lot of his own dialogue. Without a doubt, that role was one of the most memorable film performances of the past 50 years.
