Now Morgbug, you gotta remind people....why do people actually  live in a place as cold as Winnipeg?

Mostly cuz I grew up here.

I'm used to it.

It's a decent sized city, but not too large.  Housing is affordable.  I have a 1900 sq ft house on a 60x120 lot that cost us just over $130K.  With a pool.
It's safe (though we do have the highest per capita murder rate in Canada around a whopping 2.0) in spite of what the media tell you.  We supposedly have a gang problem.  We do, but they are so bush league in comparison to anything in the US or larger Canadian cities that virtually all of their crimes are noticed, reported and acted upon by the police.  Things that happen in Vancouver or New York would be scandalous here.  Things that happen in Winnipeg that are screaming front page headlines here would be hard pressed to make even a three line mention in either of those two cities.

Winter, in spite of all my whining, is what you make of it.  I grew up playing hockey outdoors, whether on ice or the street (Car!  Game On!).  Tobogganing, skating in general, cross country skiing are all a hoot and even better now that my kid is old enough to enjoy them.

Spring and fall here tend to be great.  Windy, sometimes cool but still highly tolerable and a definite switch in the seasons versus a place like Phoenix where your major clue is that the vegetation goes dormant.  Summers are unreal and as hot as the winters are cold.  I have a pool in my backyard and we get four months of pure enjoyment out of it.

Winnipeg is the largest center with the widest maximum temperature range in the world.  In terms of Farenheit, we range from -40 to just under +100 in a year.  It makes you appreciate what you have in each season.

What I loathe is my commute.  The official snow policy is that if you miss a day of work because of snow, it's a vacation day.  Period.  No problem there except they relocated us an hour away for nothing more than political reasons.  When you travel a two lane (one each way, not divided) to get to work in -30 weather when the road is icy, it's snowing, morons are passing you at 80 mph and it's dark for both directions of your commute for 3 months (sun up at 8:30, down at 4:30) it's no fun.  Worse, the good folks that live in the town we relocated to don't have to leave to go to Winnipeg to work because the driving conditions are too hazardous.  Tends to fire up my old bitter gene just a touch when my life (and those others that live in Winnipeg) is declared expendable versus the good folks that played the political card and moved to town.  Or got hired there with skills that wouldn't have gotten them an interview an hour away.

Oops, bitter ranting.  Sorry.

It's a good, clean, safe town full of amenities and cool things to do.  Great place to raise your kids.  Seasons are fun and noticeable.

If only we could get better toy distribution ;) And our hockey team back :'(

Does that help?

Jeff, glad someone caught the 'K' ;)

Let's just immortalize those words, shall we?

Jim was telling me about your weather.  Not much difference right now.

Not as cold

Dang.

We went from -15o F overnight temps with -9o F daytime temps during this week to 10deg F and SNOW this weekend.

Now, they are predicting snow all weekend, then next week we're heading back down to -15o F daytime high temps next week!

To all those NHL fans from out of state coming to town for the All-Star Game... Welcome to Minnesota!  This is the weather hockey was meant to be played in.  All you Phoenix posers can go back to your new ice rink in the desert.

At least with the cold weather the St. Paul Ice Palace won't melt any time soon!

When I saw this thread, I was hoping it would be about the one and only 'informer.'

But since it isn't... here in Dallas we've had a few days where it's gotten down into the teens - but no snow yet.

Having grown up in florida and having just moved here - I'm hoping for some snow soon.
