A friend of mine was raving about Dr Pepper and Crown Royal, so since I'm a big fan of both, I'm gonna give it a shot...

BTW, I'm still taste testing to see if I give it a thumbs up...

So Jesse - how did your little taste test work out?  And more importantly, how are you feeling today? ;)

The combination was a little sweet in my opinion, but I'm feeling pretty good.  Maybe a little tired.  ;)

"The first thing one notices in a Samuel Adams® Winter Lager is its color: the deep brown of winter. Then comes the magical aroma which promises something special on the tongue. The warm aroma of cinnamon and ginger which blends with the roasty sweetness of the malted barley and hint of citrus from the orange peel. And after that first sip the promise is fulfilled. On the palate Samuel Adams® Winter Lager is rich and full bodied, robust and warming, a wonderful way to enjoy the cold evenings that come with this season."

It's decent and the cinnamon and ginger is nice enough, but "robust" and "full-bodied"? Not buying it, sorry. It seems kind of weak actually.

Looks like Jim's batting 1 out of 3 so far, but I'm looking forward to the Cream Stout and Old Fezziwig....

"Samuel Adams® Cream Stout is a true cream stout, balancing body and sweetness with the natural spiciness of grain and hand selected English hops. Our Brewers use generous portions of roasted chocolate and caramel malts as well as unroasted barley to impart a fullness of body, a roasty malt character and rich, creamy head. Its dark mahogany color make it almost as easy on the eyes as it is on the palate."

It's not as "creamy" or as good as Guiness, but still reasonably awesome. No doubt it would have been even better if I hadn't been slugging the scotch beforehand and killed my tastebuds, so it's a good thing I still have one left.

2/4 with just Old Fezzi to go. Well the sixth one is regular Boston Lager and we already know that's good, so I guess it's 3/5.

I'm not sure that Guiness should really be thought of as creamy, should it?  Most cream ales I've tasted have just about nothing in common with Guiness so I don't know if you're making a fair comparison.

Man I miss college.

Fair enough, and I will defer to your superior knowledge. ;) I'm still new enough at this that I'm still getting the nomenclature down, and that was the best adjective that came to mind.

I've never had any cream ales, so I was mostly working from the "stout" portion of the name. Guinness--and the few other stouts I've had--have some different texture that this stuff lacks; I think there might be a greater quantity of hops in the Sam Adams. In that case I don't get the addition of "cream" since it doesn't seem to have anything in common with cream ... but like I said, still working on the analysis skills.

Right now I'm on the last new flavor:

"Samuel Adams® Old Fezziwig® Ale is the Christmas cookie of beer. Bursting with spices of the season and a remarkably full body, it helps those long winter nights pass much quicker. The full body hits the palate first with a depth of malt character ranging from sweeter toffee and caramel notes to the more dark, roasty chocolate notes. Then come the spices in full force. Cinnamon, ginger and orange peel dance on the tongue bringing with them the celebratory spirit that goes hand in hand with the season."

Overall verdict: the Holiday Porter and Cream Stout were the best, Cranberry Lambic least favorite, and Winter Lager and Old Fezzi somewhere in the middle.

I split a 12 pack of the Winter Sampler the other night with my brother...I've been a huge Cream Stout fan for years so that by far is my favorite.  The other 5 go like this:

Great

#1 Cream Stout
#2 Winter Lager

Good

#3 Holiday Porter
#4 Old Fezziwig's

Vile

#5 Sam Original
#6 Cranberry Lambic

I think Original Sam Adams is one of the worst "beers" out there.  I am not and never will be a fan of the taste of hops.  I really can't stand it but they make other good stuff.  I usually do like fruit flavored beers (SA Cherry Wheat is another one of my favs) but for some reason I just can't get in to the Cranberry.

Nathan...I have another challenge for you and being a MN lad one you should take on soon...

Not sure if there is a MGM in Northfield but the ones here always have a sampler 12 pack, some of them are really good, others...Cranberry Lambic ;)
