Freeze Frames & Commtech Chips
« on: October 29, 2005, 12:42 PM »
The current discussion of the "collectibility" of the upcoming mini hologram figures in the ROTS series got me thinking about other freebies of the past.

Does anyone consider these as an individual collectible (apart from the figures they came with)?  Was it a big deal to get a complete set, whether Freeze Frames or Commtechs?

I liked both FFs and Commtechs in their day, but I don't pursue them as collectibles in themselves. For example, I don't sweat it if I buy a figure loose without the FF or Commtech.

I can see how it could be interesting to try to collect complete sets (they don't take up much space or anything), but I don't have the patience or inclination.

One of my favorite things, actually, is having a complete loose FF set in holders with the binocs.  I loved them as a cheap side collectible...  Loose made collecting them easier too.

Having a complete Force file set is kind of fun too...  In  weird way.  They're unique, something different you can pass to friends looking at the collection and say "this is the full set of these..." and massing that whole set wasn't TERRIBLY easy at the time.  Pretty cool to me whereas some just tossed them away it seemed.

I forgot about Force Files ... those were probably my favorite pack-in gimmick so far. I like the pretty pictures ;), as well as the stats and assorted EU background. If I had the patience, it would be worth it to me to have a whole set of Force Files. If I could hypothetically buy the full collection all at once for a reasonable price, I think I'd do it, but it just isn't worth the hassle to find them individually.

whereas some just tossed them away it seemed.

I have a complete collection of Commtech and Force Files, but I still lack many Freeze Frames as well as the binocs. The figures with the offer for the binocs never arrived here until 2000 when KB was blowing them out, well after the offer had expired.

If I hadn't gotten all of the FF's and CTC's with the figures, I would not have lost sleep, but I just happen to have a complete carded set of each, save for the Mail Away FF's.

I never really liked the Freeze Frames, but I thought the commtech chips were pretty cool. I never really went out of my way to collect them, though. I ended up losing most of them. :-\

I have all of the Force Files and Comm Tech chips.  As far as the Freeze frames go,  I have most of them.  If I can get my hands on the ones I don't have great if not I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. ::)

As far as the SAGA holo figures,  too easy to get them.

I have all the Force Files and I think all the Flash backs.
I love the Commtechs--I'm missing some from the harder to find figures that I don't have yet.
I'm missing several Freeze Frames as well.
I don't have a single hologram pack-in yet.

For the most part, Hasbro has done some fun pack-ins without really raising the cost of the figure (at least with the POTF2 line).  The stands that they started doing during the SAGA line were good--a nice replacement to the Commtechs.

Did any Ponda Baba freeze frame prototypes ever surface?

To the best of my knowledge, no.  The Ponda Baba figure was scrapped well before production and prototyping if I'm not mistaken.  I've seen customs though that are quite good, but that's it.
