Title: Customs of Us
Post by: Phrubruh on August 14, 2005, 11:10 PM
Welcome to another edition of Group Projects. This time our subject will be some rather wierd chacters - US ! 8)  We are doing this group project in tandom with FFURG. They are making a custom of Chewbacca's alter ego Snoova. This group project will end at the end of September. The group project is open to anyone that cares to work on it. Final pictures will be posted on the April 2004 casting call. You can see it here! (http://www.ffurg.com/casting_call/cc-48.htm)

The idea is to make the specified character as well as you can. You should post work in progress pictures thru-out the month. We can discuss techniques and parts used. Feel free to ask questions and post constructive feedback. It would be good if you could post a pictures of youself so we can see your reference matteral. I always try to take any feedback I can get and apply it to the figure. Any questions?

Let's start by gathering some reference pictures of ourselves and talk about parts.

I will try to do my best, but there are very few Mexican Action figures out there, let me start looking for a latino lookin action figure and I will do my best.

Great idea.

Tijuana, there may be some in the 21st century XD line that have the more Mexican look.  I wonder if there might be a few GI JOE ones too?

Yep, that's a very pretty lady that you have.  Here's a recent pic of me -

I'm the 4th one from the left.

The 21st Century toys... there are several sites that sell them.  My favorite was www.smallblueplanet.com, but they seem to not have any in stock at the moment.  Here's another site, but they seem kinda pricey, and I've never ordered from them before - http://smalljoes.com/21stcentury_xd_xtreme_118figures.shtml

Couldn't help but to reply here! I mainly post at TNI and occasionally at Galactic Hunter . . .  but I'm always browsing the threads here at Jedi Defender. So when I came accross this post I just had to sign up and reply. This goes out to Chewie . . .  ppka  8)

Cool - right back at you!  And that's a pretty goofy pic, ain't it.  Some of us alumni act like idiots sometimes.   I think of the hundred or so alumni that I know, I'm the only one with a Star Wars problem.  ;)

Anyways, hope to see you around more too - ppka

Phruby, I'm not sure what head to use either.   ???

Some? Haha. What chapter were you in? I was in Phi, Roanoke College. BTW, I love you dios . . . I'm working on one myself and I was thinking about asking for your input before I knew about "us" Oh, how bad that sounds.  :-X

Us?  Ha ha... that does sound hilarious.

I went to Southeast Missouri State - Epsilon Iota chapter (it's about 100 miles south of St. Louis).  Quite a few of my old college buddies do love Star Wars, just not to this degree of sickness.    :)

Thanks for the kind words... I'm very lucky that my wife lets me have my collection and will be willing to let me sit on the couch and customize a couple nights a week.

Feel free to post your stuff here too.  And ask away, there will probably be lots of questions that we have for you too.   ;)

Thanks for the compliments on Rebecca, both she and I are flattered, what I am most lucky about is that she lets me have all my stuff out on display all over the house, I mean I took over the kitchen and washing room, I will post pics of my collection on another trhead, even if it is a bit messy...

Master Phurby & Chewie I think the Military line from Toys r us, has a couple of guys who look like you guys or at least a little, I will try to post pictures on them, also I still owe you that Enloff picture chewie, I am just embarrased that the custom is not as good as yours.

TijuanaKedi---I bet you could use a SAGA Jango Fett (Kamino Escape) head for yourself. I see the resemblence. :)

Post by: Tijuanajedi on August 16, 2005, 07:44 AM
Thanks Jediknight760071 ,

I was thinking maybe the Naboo Royal Palace guard, the red one, he has a goatee and looks kinda hyspanic, but hey I will take a closer look on the Jango.

How about a picture of you, or what are you thinking of using?

By the  way all you guys can call me Marlon if you wish to do so.

Actually yes the Naboo guard with the removable helmet would probably be a great head to use.

I've seen those BBI figures at TRU and have quite a few actually.  I think there are a couple with somewhat of a resemblence.

Hi everyone,

This is my first post on Jedi Defender.  Some of you already know me from Rebelscum and FFURG.  I figured this group project would be a perfect excuse for me to finally join up!  :)  I did make one early attempt at a custom self-portrait (http://www.geocities.com/findswoman/4inch/Finds.html) some years back, but wouldn't mind trying for a new, improved one.

Good to see some familiar names -- and faces -- already!  Speaking of faces, Phruby, I wonder if heads from Arvel Crynyd or Ric Olié would work.  You seem sort of a composite of those two faces...

And yes, Marlon, your wife is very pretty. :)

All right, as for my own reference pictures.  My options are a bit limited, since there aren't that many female options out there.  Any ideas?  My first attempt used a PLC Ewok Leia head, but I wonder if there isn't anything better out there...

Hey Phruby I was going through some of my spare figs and I think i see a resemblence with the "Pit of carkoon " Han solo. His face is slightly thinner ( please take no offense :)) but i think it could work. I'm hoping to get a pic of my scrawny, Shaggy-esque mug on here hopefully by tonight. I do need a VOTC luke for the body though. ( Im going to embellish a little. ;D)
Title: Re: Group Project 8 - Customs of Us
Post by: Phrubruh on August 16, 2005, 01:58 PM
The Han Solo or Ric Olié just might work. I think I have an extra Ric Olie to try it out. I've got more hair though but that should be an easy fix.

For Findswoman I can see the Baroness working with a different hair style.

Isn't this thread great? We get to see what each other look like and make figures of ourselves. What might be even more fun is to team up and make figures of each other.

Well, you asked for it here they are.

This is my hormal everyday look.

This is my I used to hang out with Pantera and all I got was this lousy T-shirt look.

And this is my always a roadie never a rockstar look.

so what should I use? Please be kind. ;D

This is actually turning out to be one of the funniest threads I've ever seen.  It's so damn hilarious.   ;D

I'm thinking since I look like a little kid still (I'm 28 years old though and 5'7" so I'm not a midget) that I might go with a POTJ Zutton body.

My body isn't that stubby though.  I just really have a kid face.  So, hell maybe some sort of Luke body would work?

For all of you guys, here's what I'm thinking -

Phruby - Could you modify a Bail Organa head some?  Like remove the facial hair?

Findswoman - Baroness might be a very good start.  Maybe her head on a Leia body.

Ennis - I'm not sure what head, maybe something using the Agen Kolar hair though, with the ROTS Captain Antilles head?

 :P
Title: Re: Group Project 8 - Customs of Us
Post by: findswoman on August 16, 2005, 06:10 PM
Wow, Chewie, you do indeed have that boyish look!  :)  Maybe Zett Jukassa for the head, on a non-POTF2 Luke body?

I agree that the ROTS Antilles would be a very likely match for Darth Ennis. Or perhaps also one of the Hans might work, with some long hair sculpted on -- maybe the Commtech Cantina Han or the POTJ Death Star Escape Han.

Now I need a bit more advice too: which Baroness to use?  I know there are a couple of different ones, some with removable glasses and some without, and it also depends what's in my parts box... Bodywise, though, I think it will be one of the taller Leias

Incidentally, what outfits are we all making ourselves in?  Costumes? Everyday clothes?  Anything else? Depends on the fodder we use, I guess...

Findswoman, I would suggest the blue baroness from the two pack. You might still be able to find her. You can put her in any star wars or real life outfit you want. How about twi'lik?  ;)

I look like an old man compared to all you guys. Sad since I'm the same age as Greg. For Greg we need a Men in Black Will Smith. It would be great. You'd have the sunglasses on in some jedi robes.

I think I agree with Findswoman I do have that lop-sided grin that Han has. I havent gotten a good look at the Antilles figure but I think my local target has a few so I'll go check. I think I have a few extra baroness if you need one. If not I know they have the black version of that fig at our Dollar General. Let me know if you need one. As far as Glassman I think there one of the  older Stalker heads from The G.I.Joe line would do for you. I think I may have an extra of the one I'm talking about I'll try to find it, and get you a pic. Dont feel so bad Chewie, I'm 32 and I still get IDd for cigarettes. I dont know if I should take it as an insult or a compliment.

I think phurby and Findswoman have good suggestions for you Darth E.
In the past have used lando as a base for my head, but i think i'm gonna whip out the waxpen and see if i can sculpt myself.

I have a question. Are we making ourselves as any specific character?  Or is is a free for all?
Like ourself as a jedi or bounty hunter or just any on/thing?

I've made myself as a jedi before, so i think i'm gonna go with a sith version of me. Either that or a Mandalorian Me.

DSJ!   Oh my gosh!  How are you?  It has been a long time, indeed.  Hope you're doing well!  :)

Glassman, wow, you too look not a day above 18!  :D  Looking forward to see your self-sculpt -- sounds very ambitious.  I agree, spouse/SO customs would indeed be a fun optional addition.  I have done one or two of my husband, such as this one in Rebel pilot gear (http://www.geocities.com/findswoman/4inch/XWingSchmuckuss.html), but nothing really serious or involved.  Now if I only had sculpting chops!...

Darth Ennis, I've PMd you about that Baroness.  :)

And Phruby, as for Twi'lek garb... I'll have my people talk to your people.  ;)

Looking forward to seeing everyone's work!

Finds, i hear it all the time. Even when I'm with my 10 year old son and wife, i get carded. I have to ask them do you think i had him when i was 8?  (Oh and Smuckuss was hilarious)

So then what character is everybody doing since its a free for all? Like i said, either a sith or a madalorian for me.

I honestly don't know why, but now I have the insatiable desire to know what CHEWIE looks like with a moustache. Not a tom selleck one either; one of those old Dastardy Dick-type ones where he can twist the mostache tips with his fingers. Is it just me?

I'm the complete opposite. I'm fifteen and people mistake me for a 27-year-old.

I'd like to see you in mando armour, Then again; I like anything as long as it has to do with mandalorians, so I'm a tad biased. :P

Perennial, at first when i looked at that Pic3, I thought that was your arm stretched all the way over both guys.
Cause you are so much taller than them it looked like that at first.

Well, if my head sculpt comes off looking decient, I may do both, but i'm leaning towards the mandalorian.
I'm killing two birds. This and the bounty hunter challange.

Actually, I had the worst moustache ever when I was in high school in 94-95.  Absolutely awful.  I wanted to look older... when I got to college, I realize how stupid it looked and it's been gone since.

So, yeah the rule that Phruby had set for this was to be a custom of yourself, to try and make it resemble yourself, but it could be in any outfit.

The CCC (I like that) for this month is Droids, and for the next two months are as follows -

September - Bounty Hunters/Terrorists
October - Organic Separatist Troops (unless it gets changed to something else)

I wouldnt mind actually doing a Hermione Bagwa as as group project next time around. For anyone who doesnt know she's the human waitress at Dex's Diner. Maybe we could do it after the Snoova? Just a thought.

I may have lost something in the translation for the idea. Does the custom of Us have to be how we look or can it be a bit exaggerated on what we would look like in the SW universe? If so, I'll throw in my already completed self-custom as a Jedi for this site of the Project.

You could even add a dog custom, using TIMBER from the Gi Joe line.

I don't know if you guys have seen this before but the very first casting call at FFURG was customs of us. It's funny seeing all of these figures and wondering where most of these people are now a days. They might give you some ideas for your own figure. Maybe Jason will add our pictures there too. ;)

I checked out the Elite solider at target today. There is one that looks just like Greg with sun glasses on.

I'm thinking of using gi joe Hard Drive for a head for mine. I think he will be somekind of Jedi slicer.

You need to host the picture at a place like photobucket. They press the little picture button above and put in the url to the picture. Email me the picture and I'll post it if you want.

I did a cartoon-ish custom figure of myself a while back using a vinyl figure and have decided to "update" it into a Star Wars character.

I'll post a picture of myself as well as the custom as it is right now later.

Can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with~

Typho is a very good idea - I would probably think that woudl be best for you.

SLC, I still can't see that pic - sorry!   :-\

 :P

Yeah it keeps showing up then disappearing, I don't know what is happening.  ???

Perrenial, I think Typho would work, unless you want an eye patch you'd have to do some resculpting though.

I was thining of sculpting on the other eye and making it something like a pair of glasses, but then again, I like the one eye thing- maybe it could be like a rangefinder type thing.

I've been thinking of doing a custom of myself for some time now.  However been havin a bit of trouble finding a figure tubby enough, I figure Jek Porkins wouldn't be too bad...he's a bit rounder than I am but he could work.  I've also thought about using the doc ock figure from marvel super heroe showdown as a base...but those figs are a bit on the pricey side.

The head is the worst part, I don't think they'd sell too many toys with a head like mine...hehehe...lol.

But anyways, I'm up to the challenge, I'll double my efforts to find the perfect tubby figure!!

Btw, are there any figs out there that are slightly balding?   Maybe my custom will just wear a helmet.

I really think that a General Madine head would better suit you. The face is more similar to madine aside from the haircut, but I'd strongly suggest using an OTC General Madine Head

How about an agent Faces head from the G.I.Joe line? Nadine is a good choice though, just dont use that really bad combover that he had. And as far as the Antilles head it looks similar, maybe with a few modifications i can probably make it better.

the 12" Biker Scout i am working on looks like my husband so that has him done. i have to be in Royal Guard attire since i am going to be working on completing the costume (finally!) with my aunt who can sew the robes for me - yay!  :D

If you go with the helmet, the Jade head will never fit. Maybe if you could make it swap heads it will work. Another figure you could use is the gi joe bombstrike.

Title: Re: Group Project 8 - Customs of Us

i was thinking of just having a loose helmet to "hold" if that makes sense, b/c i will have the robes for a complete Royal Guard costume soon enough. i may get armor for underneath like Carnor Jax, but styled in a way more suitable to a female.  ;)

the gi joe bombstrike is definitely more well-endowed than myself  :-[

thanks for all the help Phruby  :)

The Sumos name was E.Honda, and he was from the Street Fighter subline. You can go ti Yojoe.com and look him up If you would like to see him. But I warn you from my Joe collecting days he was pretty hard to find, and goes for a good bit loose.

I did a quick eBay search and it seems that it'll run me between $5 to $10 depending on shipping, so I'll probably see how the Jurassic Park guy head works (from the Raptor set that's currently at KB), that E. Honda head would probably be better though...

Does anyone else think Darth Ripley looks ever so slightly like Nicole Kidman in this pic? Too bad they never made any Nicole Kidman figures. But then, maybe it's just me.

I wouldn't use the Mara Jade head though, Ripley. That head would not do you justice. That figure was beaten with the uglysaber. Go with a Spy Troops Scarlett head instead.

And for Gregorbian, I think the E. Honda, while a mite big, is pretty close otherwise. Just gotta lose the top knot.

Are these customs supposed to be us as a Star Wars character, or us in every day life?

As long as it resembles you in some way, you can be a bounty hunting, sith killing, Carbine slinging madman or an accountant with a jolly pinstripe suit. It really doesn't matter so long as it resembles you.

I'm thinking of going with a GI Joe VvV Barrel Roll head for the spiky hair and sculpting on the beard. I may add the sunglasses I have from the Leatherneck figures I have, since I am rarely in the sun without 'em.   ;D

Dont feel so bad Glassman, having to evacuate from hurricane Katrina set me back a ways myself. not only did it set me back but I was supposed to send Findswoman the head for her custom. The really aggrivating fact about this whole ordeal, is that I've got all these great custom ideas recently but no raw materials to impliment them. I've had to make the 3po leg a little longer so I added a section from his other leg. I think he will be receiving a new hand and possibily a wrist gauntlet computer.

SLC, do you know why their charter got revoked?  That sucks.  But it doesn't surprise me too much these days... hopefully it wasn't for hazing, which didn't happen in my chapter ever.

Phruby, this is looking great!

Yeah, apparently the Frats and Sororities around here do this thing called "Rise and Ralph" at the end of Rush Week where they all wake up a 5am and go get drunk, this was on a thursday or friday. I'm not sure if you heard about Samantha Spady (she was the girl who died in a frat house last year, it was on the national news), but ever since then the Greek houses are supposed to be dry. The Denver Post (one of the 2 major CO papers) somehow found out and they got in a lot of trouble. The PIKEs lost their chapter 3 other are supended for a year and 4 more are on social prohibiation.

I made a clone (not posted yet) custom and i gave him like a wrist gauntet. All I did was cut apart a CW arc trooper's left gauntlet. I had a hard time cutting it 'cuz I used my X-acto.(dont have a dremel yet :-[ :'()

Ok, here's my Custom of Me - if I were a Jedi, maybe this is what I'd look like.

I haven't named him yet, but I'll probably have him show up in the Rykrof Enloe series, but not as "me" but as some other Jedi.

He's made from the SAGA Outlander Club Obi Wan, a head and hands from an XD figure, and repainted quite a bit.

That's pretty good Chewie. I like shocked look on his face.

Since I'm a programmer at my company, I'm taking the approach of me as a Jedi Slicer. Since I always have the latest gadgets around, I figure in the future half my body will be replaced with internet links and robotics. Here is the unpainted version of Jedi Slicer self.

hey Smarty you should try to find the Will Robinson figure from the Lost in Space line a few years back...

Nice custom of yourself CHEWIE  ;D
Are you going to give him a Star-Warsy version of your name?

Phruby - looking cool so far, I like the "slicer" aspects to him.  The wires on the top of his head are a nice touch.  I can't wait to see the finished version.

Smarty - That figure that jokabofe linked to would be a very good head for you.  As for the body, what about a Zett Jukassa figure?  He's a little taller than the Ep. 1 Anakin figure

But, my sith is coming soon.

Phurby, great figure. Love the prosthetics!  The mechanical brain is the best though.
Id' size down the pda, sort like its "in" the arm rather than on the arm. Like the Bionic man!

Here is my entry:

Todro Haida was born on Alderaan 15 years before the Battle of Naboo by spice miners. He was found by Ki Adi Mundi and trained by Agen Kolar. Todro learned very quickly and surprised many Jedi Masters even Master Yoda. Was with Agen Kolar at the Battle of Geonosis and got seperated from the surviving Jedi. Thought dead he and Padawan Barris Offee battled numerous Battle Droids to get to safety of the front lines. Yoda and the Jedi Council told him the the Battle on Geonosis was his Jedi Trial and was then made Jedi Knight.

Todro fought on many planets during the Clone Wars and lost many friends including his padawan, a Trandoshan named Koskk. He was stationed on Kashyyyk along with Master Yoda and Master Unduli when the Emperor's "Order 66" was issued. Forunately for him he had gotten lost from his Clone Army when the order was issued and due to the coloring of his robes he was pretty much consealed from any clones that were to follow the Emperors order. He was able to talk to Master Yoda before he left the planet in his escape pod. "Alderaan you must go. Needed there you will be. Last of the Jedi we are."

Able to sneak away in an stolen Arc-170 Todro left the Wookiee planet and headed toward his home planet. A planet he had never seen since Master Ki had taken him from it. Todro felt the tremor in the force when the Skywalker twins were born. When Bail Organa returned to Alderaan with Leia, Bail searched out Todro and asked him to be his undercover watcher over her, just in case the Emperor found out about her. Todro did just that and never had to raise his lightsaber again. He needed the rest. He had been through so much. Todro watched Leia grow into a young Senator for the planet. He knew that she would make the positive change for the universe that was ruled under the fist of Vader and the Emperor. Todro passed along with the rest of the planet Alderran when the Death Star destroyed it. He was now one with the force.

I used a Jurrasic Park General for the head. Cut the neck post and dremeled out the the head so it could fit on the neck post of the Obi Wan Pilot body. And the lightsaber is a POTJ Plo Koon saber painted in some parts with a orange blade.

Very nice MetalJedi! What head is that?

I think that he would look even better if you gave him anither coat of green, some of the original colo seems to be bleeding through. :-\ And then perhaps a bit of a drybrush. I'd paint the inside of the cloak green too, At least near the legs or anywhere else where you can see it from the outside.

The head is from the Jurassic Park General figure. I just added the brown hair and goatee. As for the original color "coming through" that is actually the lighter color I used to drybrush the figure with. If you look at the pic with the cloak on you can see some subtle hints of it as well. The pic doesn't do it justice.

I left the inside of the cloak unpainted on purpose to match he brown on the legs of the figure. I figure I would be different than most Jedi and have a two toned cloak.
Title: Re: Group Project 8 - Customs of Us
Post by: Ryan on September 21, 2005, 07:05 AM
Looking at it closer I guess I can see that now. I think that a little more pronounced drybrushing would look even better. As for the cloak I guess that makes sense, I have reversible jackets that have two different colors.

And Ignore my comment about your head, I just now noticed you wrote that in the first post. Stupid sleep deprivation ::)

First off, Metal Jedi, that looks great!  I really like this one and the green colors really set him apart from other Jedi.  Very well done.  I would suggest using a touch of white for dry brushing.  I think it would really bring out the details in this excellent custom that you have put together.

Coeli, you look like you could kick some serious ass in a bar fight.  I wouldn't want to piss you off.   :)

If you do make a custom of yourself, I do see the Obi Wan resemblance.

MetalJedi - awesome custom!  The colors you picked are great, I like that it's not very conventional in terms of jedi colors (like a true metalhead  ;)).  The "lining" of the cloak is a great touch and I think it works fine.  Awesome stuff!

Coeli - You could use some of those early POTF2 figures, although I'm not sure what head to use....

my "Self-customs" submission: Myself as a Retired mandalorian soldier-turned Journeyman protector.

Backstory: Dav'sa Arman was once a mandalorian soldier serving under Jaster Mereel's personal unit-- Headhunter company; which specialized in reconnaissance and covert operations and were characterized by their darker armour colourations. While under Jaster's command, Dav'sa served as a commander and was with the mandalorians well past Jaster's death.

He served under Jango until the unfortunate incident at Galidraan, where he, as did most of the mandalorians who didn't die, went his own way. Some went onto become bounty hunters, but Dav'sa had other things in mind.

He went to Concord Dawn to a village and became Journeyman protector up until the clone wars, when a mysterious man in familiar armour named Spar comes to him with a proposition...

You mean he's not going to be a sith lord?

I mean he may be my first 12" custom and He may be me as a jedi not a sith.

Down to the wire.... I have cast my head this morning, and i gotta paint that tonight.
I will post progress pics and finish product all together.
Since i never customized a 12" figure, i never really understod why people switched the body to a "Dragon or BBI" body.... I get it now.
Wish i had one laying around.

Getting the sash on the tunic the right color is the hard part. I got the under tunic and the pants colored to my liking, i cant get the over the shoulder sash right.

Pics tonight, or tomorrow morning.

Looks good Tijuana, plain and simple yet effective.  That head is a good match for the Windu body, even if it wasn't a custom of yourself it would still work well as a random custom Jedi.

Glassman, I am looking forward to seeing what you present to us.   :)

Well, I got my figure done (so to speak)  and photographed, but i'm doing a disk clean up and its keeping me from opening  photoshop so i can resize em.

Its been a hour so far and its only half way done.  So i'll probably just post my pics tomorrow.

Cool! Will the helmet be removable?

yes Phruby the helmet is removable and the head i got looks close to my husband. i was able to get a balacava (really bad spelling) just like in the movies and like my hubby wears with his armor. i did some sewing on the doll to make the armor fit the smaller Dragon body better and the jumpsuit is also loose rather than tight. I also replaced the large inaccurate gloves with some nice BBi gloves and painted those black, you can see the comparison pic below. i sewed the chest armor together instead of the ridiculous tab thingys Hasblow had on there. i also cut the holster and epoxied it to the boot to be more movie accurate.

ah, what the heck. here are some photos of my hubby as a Biker Scout. i'm working on my chestburster as we speak...i'll get pics of it WIP up tommorrow, at least i got 1/2 finished on this project  :P

i apologize for the photos in advance, i kinda took them in between things drying, so they aren't the best.

That biker hubby looks great ripley.

Here is my First 12" custom.

Since i probably wont make any more this scale, i decided to go with my usual Jedi character.
You probably have seen my self customs so you may recognize the color scheme.

The head was a collaboration with Bantha 5.  About 3 years ago(before i started sculpting), i contacted him to see if he would sculpt my head for a 3 3/4 custom i wanted to make. I was tired of using lando heads.
He started it but never finished it. And he did a 12" instead of 3 3/4. So he sent it to me a couple months ago cause he said he'd probably never get around to finishing it so i figured i'd finish it some day.
Well i rushed some face details to get this done for today, but the sculpt is far from finished.

I'll fix it one of these days.

The Body and clothes are from ATOC Mace and the Robe is 12" Ben Kenobi. The Collectors Series line not the Latest one that WONT go on sale at Toy's R Us. I got 8 of these 12"  figs on flee bay for $25 for the lot.

Anyway, Gla-Gar Gowas...

The cLothes gave me the Hardest time. I decided to try and Air-bruch the color insted of dye it. Well i got everything the color i wanted except the sash over the shoulders.

Darth_Ripley - Awesome Biker Hubby!  Definitely a step up from hasbro's version (and that's one of my favorite 12" figures!)  I really want to try this out, but I'm very worried about sacrificing my 12" Biker Scout...  I think I'll convert my other troopers to BBi/Dragon bodies first (I already did a TIE Pilot)  ;D
Anyway, how much did you have to modify the armor (aside from cutting off the strap things on the chest armor and redoing the ankle holster)?  I really want to upgrade my 12" Biker Scout but I don't know how to sew, do you think that would be a major problem?  I found that the bodysuit of the 12" Clone Trooper fit pretty well on the BBi body, so hopefully that won't be a big problem...
Great stuff, I really can't wait to see how your self-custom turns out!  Your hubby is a lucky man!  ;D

Glassman - Awesome!  The headsculpt looks pretty damn good to me, I'm not sure what you could change, but then again, you're the sculpting expert  ;D
I think you should use the BBi or Dragon body (as Darth_Ripley would recommend) - they are way better in proportion as well as articulation.  Still, your custom definitely looks sharp.
How does air-brushing work on the softgoods?  Was it easier than dyeing the clothing?  It looks good although there are bits of the lighter color showing through around the seams...

Darth Ripley- I love the Biker Scout custom of your husband. Its done very well.

Glassman - As far as I can see you don't need to change a thing. But then again I don't sculpt. The airburshing kinda of made your jedi robes to be battle worn. I really like it!

Greg! That looks just like you! I can't believe how close you got that face.  Thats a great outfit and the whole figure is a big improvement over your 3 3/4" version. I'm a little disappointed its not a sith lord but maybe you can be turned.

Glassman, I was also blown away by your custom.

Outstanding.
Title: Re: Group Project 8 - Customs of Us
Post by: Glassman6 on September 30, 2005, 10:17 AM
Thanks guys,

Gregor, Airbrushing wasnt hard, i used to do it back in the late 80's early 90's when hip-hopers were wearing painted jeans and jean jackets.

So since i have a box full of paint from then ( and no they werent dried up!!??)  i figured that would be faster than bleaching, then dying...

SO i was using what i had, verses going and buying stuff to do it.

Meta, Thats what i thought also, that the clothes were worn, so i left some of the creases like that. But now that i think of it, it would be the reverse. The creases stay dark and the rest of the fabric wears out. But it works for me as is.

Phurby, It could happen... some of the best jedi have been turned... :) After i get the sculpt perfect, i may do a Dark version... Who knows.  My wife wants me to make her now.

first of all thanks for the nice words about my Biker hubby everyone  :)

Gregorbian, all i did was cut the tabs on the chest armor and poke holes in it to sew it together. i can't sew too well myself either, but i borrowed some curved needles from my mother and those are a life saver for sewing armor on 12" troopers. any fabric store should have them for around $2-3 a pack. the jumpsuit fit the Dragon body fine. it's very tight on the bulky Hasbro body, but it should be more loose like a jumpsuit, not spandex-y if you know what i mean. i also sewed the diaper to the jumpsuit to keep it up higher where it should be - more movie accurate again. the holster is easy to cut off the tabs and epoxy to the boot, just use rubberbands to hold it in place while drying so it will keep its shape. don't be intimidated by the sewing, maybe you could get your girlfriend to help too  ;)

Glassman, your 12" Jedi looks great. i really like the airbrushing on the robes and the blue stands out nicely instead of the old brown/tan every other Jedi has.

welp, i was hoping to have WIP pics to show you guys but due to a series of unfortunate events, i am back to square one. i decided to go with a Jedi Leia EU body and a GI Joe Scarlett head (courtesy of DD - thanks again!) Scarlett was just so "well-endowed" that the chestburster could barely be seen  :P
so i went to the Leia body and i managed to ruin it with the Dremel. i was working on it this afternoon when the doorbell rang and it startled me and the Dremel slipped and score one ruined Leia body and a cut finger. today just wasn't my day for customs, and i was trying to hurry on getting the custom more put together for pics. but its ok, i found another Leia on flee-bay so i'll pick her up & start over. i learned a lot from my sculpting mistakes in the meantime so i am anxious to get the new body and begin again. suffice to say it's been a long day, but everything happens for a reason and i am ok now.

Jedi Defender pulled in 7. Darth_Ripley will finish her version soon making it 8. So currently:

FFURG 4
Jedi Defender 7

I'm really pleased with the response from both forums. I think we should keep doing different group projects at both sites. What do you think?

LOL Phruby!

my figure should be coming anyday now...finally got one off of flea-bay & i can't wait to get it all done too!

in the meantime, i just finished up my Elite Mygeeto Clone & have a soft goods Obi-Wan Clone General in the works too. i caved in and bought the Jedi vs. Seperatists battle pack since the only Asajj I had was from the animated series and heck there was a lot of good fodder in there!

i'll start a thread of all the customs i have done so far later this month. i am really busy right now with having to sell some things on Ebay (no, none of my customs - not yet anyways) to help pay for my husband's $1400 dentist bill - OUCH! as well as some car repairs too.

i will get this custom finished though, i promise  :)

Wow, all this wonderful stuff that I've missed over the school year... Ripley, Glassman, and Ennis, these are some absolutely fantastic "self-portrait" (or, in Ripley's case, "spouse-portrait") customs.  It's fun seeing 12"-scale self-portraits, which are definitely a rarity.  Very inspiring!  I need to do an updated one of myself, since my hair's shorter now...

Darth Ripley, I've commented on your chest-burster self elsewhere -- it turned out great.  Reading your post of Sept. 30 below -- so that's where that spattered blood came from!  Just kidding.  :D  Very fine work.

Darth Ennis, you are absolutely right about the eerie facial resemblance. Both are very handsome devils indeed.  :)   The face is really spot on; the hair less so, but that's no biggie.  What head is that?

Glassman, your 12" Jedi self also has a great resemblance to you, from what I remember of photos you've posted.  Hooray for custom sculpting!  And the outfit is just superb -- sewn by you, I take it?

Great work all.  I know the Group Project or whatever is now officially over, but can we keep this thread around as a place to post our self-customs and such just the same?  Phruby, what sayest thou?

The body is Pilot OBI-wan and the boots are ROTS Ki-Adi-Mundi. I havent made it over to FFURG yet to post any pics but hopefully Ill be able to soon.
