Anyone read these books?
I read a blurb in USA Today a couple weeks back that they are adapting the first Book..."The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" to the big screen.
Some of my favorite books as kid I was happy to hear that (I suppose to try and capatilize on the LOTR and Harry potter trend)...not sure if I am alone out there in a sea of literary geekdom though.
To be honest, I didn't read all of the books either, the first one is one of my alltime favorites though and the highlight of 4th grade for me :-*
-
Here is the official website
http://www.narnia.com/
-
Never heard of them before, but you got me interested. I'll have to check those out next time I head over to Barnes & Noble.
-
Box Set at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0064471195/qid=1060015803/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/102-6867481-3126500?v=glance&s=books&n=507846)
The story arc is very allegorical to the Bible, CS Lewis was a biblical scholar and good friends with Tolkien
-
Hot diggity, I was doing the Boston Globe crossword during lunch today and one of the clues was "CS Lewis setting". I for the life of me couldn't figure it out and now I know.
As you can tell, I've never heard of this and now I'm mildly interesting.
-
Funny, but ever since I was a little kid - probably less than 10 years old, I had been toting around the box sets of books for both the LOTR series (w/ The Hobbit) and the Chronicles of Narnia series (7 books) from C.S. Lewis. My goal was always to read through them all, but as far as I ever got as a youth was finishing the Hobbit and about a third of the way through FOTR in the Tolkien series, and through the first 3 books of the C.S. Lewis series. As an avid "completist", it always drove me nuts to look up at my bookshelf and see these two boxsets mocking me - "ha-ha, you can't finish us!!" :P
Well, in about my 5th year of college, I didn't have too much lined up for the summer, so I said the hell with this, I'm reading those 11 books from cover to cover, starting RIGHT NOW! Since the Narnia books are MUCH easier, lighter and shorter reading, I went with that set first. Zipped through all 7 rather quickly. My mom (who's quite religious) had given me a book long ago, discussing all the parallels between the Narnia books, and the Bible/God/etc., so I kept up with that book as well, as I went through the Narnia series. Interesting stuff, and certainly a great series of books (though it's written for a younger audience)...
Then I finally jumped back over to the Tolkien series. The Hobbit went quickly (for the 3rd time), but the LOTR trilogy took a while, as it's a bit tougher read. Finally made it through the rest of that series (with Summer to spare 8)), thus lifting a terrible weight off my shoulders that had resided there for at least 15 years. Though now that the LOTR flicks have come out, my books are mocking me again to re-read them now that I've seen the movies...
The first Narnia book, The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, has been in the movie planning stages for years now. Glad to finally see it moving forward. Should be very interesting to see how it turns out, and what type of audience and feedback it garners, especially considering this one, MUCH more than the other books in the series, STRONGLY parallels the Christian religion. I'll certainly be watching it on the big screen! 8)
-
Sorta in the same boat Matt, I read the first two for sure and most of the third I think but haven't touched them again.
Reason I brought this up was because me mama and papa brought over a truck load of stuff last spring to get it out of their basement..
Yesterday was full of reminiscing and I came across my sets of books and I remembered the article.
I think I will be inserting these in my book sequence
-
I just ordered a new book from barnes and noble...it is a complete work in one volume, in a different order than what the originals were numbered...
Complete Chronicles of Narnia (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=2URC0IDXRW&isbn=0066238501&itm=1)

I've read the first two. They seemed okay to me. I might get back into reading them some day.
-

Cool. Make sure you read 'em all this time! I don't quite understand how they can start out with any other book other than The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe though, since that's where the kids first enter Narnia... ???
-
Do any of you remember the cartoon mini series of this book, I vaguely remember watching it as a kid?
-
This is driving me crazy: the first book in the Chronicles of Narnia is and always has been "The Magician's Nephew", not the more famous "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe."
-
Right, the old school way had LWatW #1, they have since changed it so it makes more sense chronology wise...MN deals with the creation of Narnia, correct?
-
Yes, Magician's Nephew explains how they discovered/entered Narnia, which is why they call it #1 in the series. :)
-
On a side note, it was the weirdness of the editing (LWatW being #1 instead of MN is one small example) that formed a wedge between Lewis and Tolkien's friendship, at least for a time. Apparently Tolkien thought Lewis should have paid a little more attention to detail and consistancy and Lewis just cranked them out.
Still I've always thought they were a fun read and great interpretations of many of the stories in the Bible. I work with kids and I'm always encouraging them to read the Narnia series (as well as LotR and Harry Potter).

Rumor is that Nicole Kidman is up for the role of the White Witch...
Wow, that's cool news, 'cause that right there says they're pretty much going all out on this production. Hopefully Lion (and maybe others from this 7 book set) will get translated to the big screen as impressively as Peter Jackson did with LOTR.
Can't wait for this one! 8)

Scratch Nicole Kidman...Tilda Swinton (http://www.reuters.co.uk/newsPackageArticle.jhtml?type=entertainmentNews&storyID=509359§ion=news) has the role

Filmforce (http://filmforce.ign.com/narnia/articles/529/529873p1.html) has an article up talking about the four "lead" children have been cast for the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. You can check out the details at the linky :).

I don't know if anyone else caught it, but the Mrs. and I were watching Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on ABC Saturday night (hadn't seen it before that actually), and they showed the "world premiere" of the first trailer for the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. I don't know if it is online yet or not (I don't see it on apple's site yet at least), but it looked pretty cool. It has been ages since I read this book, but I'm looking forward to the movie. Might have to go back and re-read before then.
-
I missed that last night, I am looking forward to this movie though. Probably fourth right now on my excitement level behind ROTS, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Potter IV.
I do recommend reading the books again...lots of good allegory there, however, he really didn't plan the whole thing too well and so the stories are sort of all over the place
-
Been digging around a bit, and it looks like Moviefone has an "extra large" version of the trailer (in quicktime), if anyone is interested in seeing it:
Chronicles of Narnia Teaser Trailer (http://movies.channel.aol.com/franchise/exclusives/chronicles_of_narnia_movie/trailer_extra_large)
-
Wow! That looks amazingly good. I think the quality of the books drops off a little bit after Lion but they are all pretty good reads. They are also much less famous then TLTWATW is...perhaps this will spark the franchise and renewed interest in it in general. We shall see. BTW, thanks to Peter Jackson for allowing this to happen, if he hadn't done LOTR, there is no way Disney would have glommed on to this and made it also happen. We'll see if it works but that trailer looked pretty sweet
-
I love these books. I first read LWW when I was 8 or so; I've read the series about five times even though it's been several years since last time. I plan to reread LWW between now and December.
This is my 2nd most anticipated movie of 2005 after ROTS. Initially I was appalled when I learned Disney was involved but I've been following the production and it really sounds like they're trying to get it right. If done well this should blow Potter out of the water and really be on par with LOTR.
Here's a great website to check out: NarniaFans.com (http://www.narniafans.com/). It also has great discussion forums.
As for the trailer, it will be attached to ROTS. I only watched a bit of the online version because I'm trying to preserve the surprise for when I see it on the big screen May 19. (I did the same thing with the full trailer for ROTS and my jaw was literally hanging open at the glories I beheld. It wouldn't have had the same impact had I watched it in the pansy-ass little computer version.)
And for the record: the books should be read in publication order (LWW first) not chronological order. :P
-
Has anyone seen the PBS adaptatioon? They made up through the 4th one, **** what was it called... the one about the ship.... The Dawnteader, I think that's it. They were really low budget and kind of cheesy, I hope the Movie is better than those were.
Wait I take that back was the Silver chair the 4th? I haven't read these since I was like 8.
-
In publication order:
1) The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe
2) Prince Caspian
3) Voyage of the Dawn Treader
4) The Silver Chair
5) The Horse and His Boy
6) The Magician's Nephew
7) The Last Battle
In-universe chronology:
1) The Magician's Nephew
2) The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
3) The Horse and His Boy (actually takes place toward the end of LWW)
4) Prince Caspian
5) Voyage of the Dawn Treader
6) The Silver Chair
7) The Last Battle
-
I've read them both ways...Publication Way the first time growing up, Chronologicaly the second time last year. I think it makes (to me at least) a lot more sense to do it Chronologically
-
I've read the first three books chronologically and they were enjoyable. I'll have to consider buying the whole set to read the rest. I remember the animated version was pretty good. The movie will be a must see.
-

Part of the thing with LWW is that it introduces the world of Narnia in a very natural fashion; as the characters discover Narnia so do the readers simultaneously. In that way I think it's a better introduction to the series than TMN which to a certain extent assumes you know something about Narnia.
But of course when re-reading them it does make a lot of sense to do it chronologically now that the reader has the big picture.
That's part of the problem with the SW prequels I think -- the way Lucas set up and structured them, it takes for granted that you've seen the OT. Maybe not intentionally, but that's how it turned out. For instance, TPM really has no setup of the Jedi or the Force, whereas that is all explained in the middle of the series, ANH. If one were to watch the six chronologically, I daresay a first-time viewer wouldn't get it initially, having to pick up on everything by context, and from their perspective the whole Force thing isn't properly introduced until the 4th movie.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to this one as well. I haven't read the books since I was a kid, and sadly don't have them anymore, but I've been thinking about picking them up again and reading them prior to the movie(s). From the first trailer, it looks like it will be pretty good.

I didn't read everything in this thread because I was afraid it would have spoilers.
I haven't ever read the books but I saw the trailer for the movie and decided I needed to read the books first. I am weird that way! So, 2 weekends ago a friend of mine bought it for me. I love those kinds of books. Funny thing is my fiance won't let me read it until I have moved in with him in Sept. Sort of hard to read it over the phone from 3,000 miles away, right?
Anyways, I am sure these will be good books when I finally get to read them...hahaha.

Not weird at all--I often do the same thing.
-
I'm actually doing the same thing. I picked the book up a little over a week ago, and I've got one chapter left to read. I haven't read it since I was a kid, and wanted to do it before the movie in December. Anyways, Filmforce (http://media.filmforce.ign.com/media/382/382954/imgs_1.html) has a few images up from the upcoming movie, clicky above if you're interested. I'm really looking forward to the movie, and hope it is great.

Gorgeous!
Meh. . .it looks like photoshop threw up all over it.
-
I finished reading these for the first time about a year ago, in chronilogical order, and I was pretty blown away. I was impressed about how much I liked the Magician's Nephew and how well it set up The Lion the Which and the Wardrobe. The last chapter of the last book is probably the most stunning peice of literature I've ever read. I hope the Film does the story justice.
-
Me too- I had to read the " the lion, the witch..ect" in early gradeschool and it still remains as one of my most FAV "forced school reads" of all time. It inspired me tor ead the rest of the series. The movie clips look awesome bringin' back the memories! Can't wait for this and King Kong rendition!
-
Filmforce (http://media.filmforce.ign.com/media/382/382954/imgs_1.html) has a bunch of new pictures from the upcoming CON: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. I'm looking forward to this film, and hope it is done well. Looking at these pictures, I think things are shaping up pretty good. The characters/scenery looks pretty much the way I imagined it when I read the book. Hit the linky for pics, if interested.
-
Wow! Thanks for the link!
In this centaur pic (http://ffmedia.ign.com/filmforce/image/article/659/659764/chronicles-of-narnia-the-lion-the-witch-and-the-wardrobe-the-20051019035135145.jpg) I like how the makeup people seemingly tweaked the lines of his cheeks and nose so they look more "horsey". Or they just found a guy that already looked like a horse. ;) Either way, good call.
And I also like the little antlery things on the White Witch's gold crown in that other picture (http://ffmedia.ign.com/filmforce/image/article/659/659764/chronicles-of-narnia-the-lion-the-witch-and-the-wardrobe-the-20051019035127535.jpg) ... looks like some sort of prehistoric deer.

dude i love those books they were great biblical analogies wich where great
Cslewis was a genius and the graphic s for the movie d@mn they rock out loud i cant wait for these clasics to be put on the big screen in december :o

Thanks so much for the heads up Valin Kenobi, the trailer is great. In case anyone is interested, here's a Quicktime Version (http://pdl.stream.aol.com/aol/us/moviefone/movies/2005/chroniclesofnarniathelionthewitchandthewardrobethe_019417/chroniclesofnarnia_trlr_02a_dl.mov) as well. I'm really looking forward to this movie, and to me, the trailers don't disappoint at all. Its looking good to me :).
-
"Aslan is on the move" -- best line from the trailer. Probably overlooked by most casual viewers, but those of us who've read the book all recognize the significance here.
Liam Neeson -- not bad, but I found it a bit distracting to hear "Qui-Gon's voice". I'm sure that when I see the movie I'll quickly stop noticing it, but still....
That rhino running those guys over was awesome too. ;D
I don't mind what they did with the battle (expanded and elaborated), but what bugs me is the dialogue. I didn't like how everything after the Beavers scene was all packaged into nice Hollywood quips and cliches ... "If it's a war he wants, etc. etc.". :-\ Really, it looks and sounds too much like a zillion other trailers out there (on the other hand, every movie sounds stupid like that when distilled into trailer soundbites). If I hadn't read the books, I bet I would view LWW as a ripoff of LOTR and Potter, and I hope that isn't the impression the general public derives from the trailer. Honestly the Goblet of Fire trailer looks more exciting to me (I'm just speaking of the trailer obviously!).
However, I'm still really excited to see the film. Duh. :D
-
That's a good point, I wonder how the "general public" will look at this movie. To people who are familiar with the book (which, when I was younger...at our school I think quite a few kids were), I think they will be looking forward to seeing it on the big screen. Then again, if its a good movie, things will take care of itself. I mean, LOTR came from books too (maybe a little more well known/larger fanbase), but it seemed to gain a lot of fans, and obviously, a lot of box office. I hope it is done well, and is a fun movie for all ages.
-
Thanks for the links fellas.
Interesting movie. Substitute children for hobbits and it's looking similar. ;) I wonder if we'll be getting a tale each Christmas season?
-
Never read the books Brent? Lewis wrote Narnia around the same time as Tolkien and LOTR, in fact they were friends and Lewis was very much inspired by LOTR and The Hobbit. I've said it a few times in the thread already but JRR thought Lewis was rather lazy when creating his world, and, when reading the books you can certainly see that. He sort of made it up as he went ala Lucas and didn't have the meticulous
Definitely worth a read, good stories with heavy Christian Allegory mixed in

I need a book for the flight to Florida, so this will probably be the one. So the answer (obviously) is nope, never read it. It seems our curriculum was somewhat different than the one you guys had. I honestly wasn't a big reader growing up so I have only painful book memories. No idea why, but I think over my education I must have read the entire collected works of Solzhenitsyn (sp?) ::)

This past Thursday, at 10:30pm, the last FX shot was completed and this morning (Saturday) at 10am, I was privileged to be in the audience of the first public showing of the finished film.
Wow! Did they get it right.
I thought it was an excellent interpretation of the book, but to a fault. In other words, I thought it was a home run, but it wasn't knocked out of the park. It's very obvious that the filmmakers went through great lengths to get it right, and it shows (although, I am disappointed one small *hint* character was left out of the film.) However, where I think the movie goes wrong is that it was made very competently, but did not go beyond that to make it special or magical. While I was blown away by what I was seeing, there were still moments missing to take it from a faith rendition to a true masterpiece, but I'm sure I'm gong to be in the minority in thinking that. I think the film will make tons of money, get good reviews and be a crowd pleaser, and deservedly so. But, after getting a film like Batman Begins this summer, a film that took that leap to masterpiece, it's a mild disappointment for me. I think in the hands of someone like Christopher Nolan or Alfonso Coarun, it would have been truly special.
As for the FX, Aslan was superb. There was one awful shot at the stone table sequence, but other than that, he was incredible. Tomnes was another amazing example of great work, I looked hard for flaws with his legs and found none. Some of the fight sequences could have been rendered and animated better, but they are definitely passable for today's audience.
I hope you all enjoy it.
-
Opening Day! Who's in? Anyone catch the midnight showing?
We're gonna check it out at 4:15pm. I've watched the half hour special on it on the Starz movie channel several times now, and it really has me excited about this flick. Hopefully it lives up to the expectations, as well as staying true to the book (which I only vaguely recall anymore, so I guess that's not such an issue really).
So drop some reviews in here and let us know what you folks thought of it!

Taking the lady to see it if everything works out. The snow doesn't like me.

I saw a special on CNN or some news channel about how the creators of Narnia have hired the same promotional team that was used by the people who produced The Passion of the Christ - this was because they wanted to "cash in" on The Passion mania.
So then they showed a series of clips where they had gone around to churches to promote the movie complete with a pastor telling a bunch of little kids that the Lion represented Jesus and that it was always cold in Narnia because it represented Hell (I believe he said something to the effect of "it's always snowing and there's never any Christmas!)
Needless to say, I was very turned off by this and now question whether or not I care about seeing the movie - I'm all for people expressing their religion and what not but even if C.S. Lewis' original intent was Christian allegory, I'm not the kind of guy to line up to go out and see movies that are inherently Christian metaphor but that fail to explicitly say so until it comes time for an advertising push at Churches across the nation.
So, are these notions mistaken?
-
So, are these notions mistaken?
I saw the same thing on ABC News (http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory?id=1367135) a few days ago. Disney basically admitted that it is going to push the that angle, but stressed that type of marketing would be aimed at groups already "involved" with a religious base (youth groups, church groups, etc).
"Rice said only 5 percent of the marketing budget for "Narnia," which opens Dec. 9, targeted faith-based groups. "
In other words, they aren't bringing up the message to the "regular folks" in commercials and trailers (as they are afraid of alienating non-christians), but they are making a lot of promo info available to your local priest/minister/pastor/revenend to use with the youth groups.
Personally, I'm going to just ignore the marketing (which is usually a good idea anyway :P) and go see the movie. I've read the books and enjoyed them, so I'll see the movie.
Sure, maybe some folks out there will try to use the movie to push an agenda, but that happens all the time nowadays where certain groups try to use movies to get the message across... Ep3 is anti-Bush! JarJar is racist stereotype! Batman Begins is right-wing agenda to exploit our fears of terrorism!
There will always be someone out there who uses a movie to push their message, this time it's just really easy to see who's going to use it and why...
-
I have heard the same. And I, too, was sort of turned off by the blatant marketing to churches.
I had already known about the intended Christian spin that Lewis put into his story, which I always thought was cool and harmless to anyone. It's just this marketing to churches that bugs me. It's as if some people need to be told it's "Christian" for them to see it. And I really don't want the Christian-right taking any type of "ownership" of this movie. If that makes any sense.
Still, my desire to see it is not diminished. I'm just a bit dismayed that people feel the need to market it as a Christian film just to get more people in the seats.
-
I find it fasinating that the very act of marketing film to the religous crowd can turn another crowd off. Perhaps that's a mistake on Disney's part, perhaps not. C.S Lewis did not go into the Narnia Project with the intent to give Christian overtones, but once he saw that they were there, or could be used, he did embrase them to a certain extent.
But, without trying to get into a religous debate, let's not forget that those themes existed long before Christ. Even if Lewis consciously intended to use the Christian themes, a lot of these thems were invented by the Greeks.
-
In the end I'm going to go see the movie - I too l loved the stories when I was little. I just get turned off when I see relgion get wrapped up in Marketing and the other way around. Especially when it's a tactic to get the "Christian market" into the theaters.
Of course, of the movies now in theaters that I want to see but haven't yet, Chronicles of Narnia comes in third behind Syriana and Walk the Line.
-
For me it's King Kong 1, then Narnia 2, syriana 3
-
Can you blame Disney though? Passion of the Christ earned a heck of a lot of money. Every studio wants to tap into that. It's just business. I'm not saying I agree or think it's necessary though.
Though, I think the film will do well enough on it's own.
-
Of course it's just business - doesn't mean it's not sleazy.
King Kong isn't out this weekend, so I'm not counting that on my little list there.
-
Of course it's just business - doesn't mean it's not sleazy.
;D
-
Saw Narnia last night and LOVED it! I went to the 10:15 pm show to avoid the crowd, but the theatre was still packed. The imagery was terrific and I wouldn't be surprised if I went to see it again. :)
-
I managed to catch the movie last night. Very well done and worth going to see. If you liked Lord of the Rings, or the Harry Potter movies, you'll like this one as well.
-
Saw this yesterday. Up to par with ROTK, IMO.
-
I enjoyed it. I wouldn't quite put it up there with any of the amazing LOTR flicks, but it had a similar feel to it. The CG was pretty good overall, especially Aslan, but a little spotty in parts too. The kids were better than I expected. I could've gone for a slightly longer running time in order to develop their characters up a little more after they met Aslan and were preparing for the battle. But definitely a recommended watch. I'll probably go check it out again when I have some time.
Also, after a minute or two of the end credits, there's another brief clip which essentially hints at the sequel. So I'm sure once the movie studio has had a week or two to review the box office receipts, they'll quickly decide if it's back to work for the next one, which would be what... Prince Caspian? I dunno anymore now that they've tweaked the original order of the books all around.
-
Until I'd gotten to this thread today, the reviews I'd read were almost universally underwhelming. Most people seemed to think it was a good but unspectacular movie.
Unfortunately, this is now the 4th movie on my list of stuff I need to see in theaters... so I probably won't get a chance to make up my mind for a few weeks...
-
My fiancee and I went and saw Narnia on Saturday. I enjoyed it and thought it followed the book exactly. Of course I had to sit by somebody who left their cell phone on so it kept ringing and the thing that got me was she ANSWERED it!!! Anyways, then, apparently she had read the books when she was a kid but her husband (or whoever the heck she was with) hadn't so if you ever wanted to know how the movie went then just listen to her. GRRRRR!!!
Anyways, I have the unabridged version with all 7 books starting with "The Magicians Nephew" I haven't gotten any farther than The Lion , the Witch, and the Wardrobe as of yet but I am hoping that I can eventually....too much other stuff going on in our lives :)
If you haven't seen it, I suggest you do!
-
We didn't get a chance to get out to the movies last weekend, so we caught Chronicles of Narnia this past weekend. We both really liked it, and I thought it followed the book pretty well. My wife remembered watching an animated version on HBO growing up (I haven't seen), and she really liked the movie as well. I can see the LOTR comparisons, due to the nature of the story/world, but it isn't really as "dark" as the LOTR films. I can't say I like it as much as the LOTR movies, but still enjoyed it a lot. Definite pick up on DVD when it comes out.

I'll bring this article up again...please read it, it discusses many of the topics being discussed here (including Christian Allegory and likenesses to LOTR)

I read this morning that Narnia passed up Kong to win the box office this past weekend. Kind of nice to see this film do well and have some legs, looks like it will end up outperforming Kong overall too, at least fromt he looks of things.
-
Since I liked both movies but thought KK was spectacular it's hard for me to understand why TLWW is beating out KK right now.
-
It sounds like the next movie in the series is officially on track (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060310/ap_en_mo/film_narnia) now for a late 2007 release. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian will be the next in the series.

I was a little underwhelmed by the first movie--it just seemed too storybook and cutesy for my taste--but they're claiming this will be more realistic, similar to how the Potter movies have been progressively more serious. IIRC this one has a more exciting story anyway.
-
What I will find fascinating is what will happen as the series moves farther away from the cutesy and very well known as The Lion, Witch and Wardrobe to lesser known but just as good other books. Its been a while since I read the entire series, I should make a revisit soon
-
The claims that Prince Caspian will less cutesy is good reason why they should have done the Magicians Nephew first. I would liked to have watched the series in order and watch it grow.

is this still coming in 2009?
-
No it's May 2008.
-
oh wow, does that mean Prince of Persia will also be moved up?
-
Uhh ... I don't think P. Caspian was ever planned for 2009. And what does that have to do with Prince of Persia?

IGN has the first trailer (http://media.movies.ign.com/media/041/041217/vids_1.html) up for Prince Caspian, coming in May. Looks pretty cool.

USA Today (http://www.usatoday.com/life/gallery/2008/l080121_prince_caspian/flash.htm) has 8 pics up from the upcoming Prince Caspian.

Newest Prince Caspian trailer (from the Super Bowl) is online HERE (http://media.movies.ign.com/media/041/041217/vid_2272917.html), for anyone interested.

According to an online source (http://movies.ign.com/articles/860/860118p1.html), Disney may shelve the Narnia series of movies after the third one (Voyage of the Dawn Treader) to focus on a new John Carter of Mars franchise instead. I'm sure it all depends on how Prince Caspian and the following movie(s) do at the box office though. If they continue to rake in the type of money that the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe did, I'd think they would change their tune.
-
You know, I've read the entire series and I liked the first film well enough but honestly, if they don't make the whole series, I'm not going to be very disappointed.
The first film/book, Prince Caspian and Voyage are the ones that I liked the best. After that I had to force myself to power through the rest of the novels. Even if they made the films I don't know if I'd stick with the series for all 7 installments.

I didn't think LWW did all that well that is why Disney is nervous about this one. Personally I think this one is a better story and introduces the main character for the next two movies. I wonder what the odds are of getting all of the books as movies by someone. I don't think its ever been done? Did the BBC make all of the books into TV movies?
-
I didn't think LWW did all that well that is why Disney is nervous about this one.
I'm not sure of the exact worldwide number, but the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was the number 2 movie of 2005 here in the U.S. (behind Revenge of the Sith), with over $291 million at the box office (http://boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?yr=2005&p=.htm). I haven't read all of the books either, so I'm not sure how well the rest would be as movies - but I'm interested in seeing the next couple at least. I don't expect Prince Caspian to do as well as LWW, there's a lot of competition in May with Indy, Iron Man, and Speed Racer.
-
speed racer? really?? that looks like an instant flop to me.
-
Yeah, I'm not excited for Speed Racer either, but I think its considered a "major release" at this point - at least from a marketing standpoint. I'm with you though, it looks like a flop to me too - then again, I didn't think Alvin and the Chipmunks would make $200 million either :).
-
Lion made $290 million in the US but it made over $450 million on the foreign market. It was a pretty solid money maker and I would think that if Caspian keeps up with it the producers will be more likely to go further than the first three or so films.
Brian is right, there's a lot of competition this year and Caspian may have trouble keeping up in the US but if the international numbers are still huge it might be enough. Plus don't count out the DVD sales. While the theater may be crowded this summer, the DVD sales could make up for it later in the year.
E...
-
It's all about the openning weekend numbers only. If it doesn't do as well as Lion did during that time, it doesn't matter how much more it makes during the rest of its release and DVD sales. Disney will still look at it as a failure. That is why Cars and Ratatuoie are not considered blockbusters by Disney because they didn't do as well as the Incredibles.
-
^You sure about that, though?
I was under the impression that over time most movies earn more from DVD sales than from the theatrical run, unless it is a blockbuster hit.
Either way, DVD sales and licensing inarguably make up a huge portion of film profits and the suits would be stupid not to take that overall picture into consideration.
-
New full trailer (http://media.movies.ign.com/media/041/041217/vids_1.html) for Prince Caspian is up at IGN.
-
well now that looks a little more like something i'd like to see.
-
So, is anyone heading out to Prince Caspian this weekend? I finished reading the book a month or so back, and it wasn't too bad. I can't say I enjoyed it as much as the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe though. That said, I'd still like to see the movie. With our little one now, getting out to movies is more of a premium - and we're heading to Indy next week - so I might have to wait for the DVD of this one.
-
I havn't been out to the movies in years thanks to the little people that have invaded my home.
-
I'm probably going to skip it. I'm going to Indy next week and I'm seriously thinking of going to Iron Man again. If I do that I don't think I'll bother with Caspian.
The film does look good though, and while I think both Iron Man and Indy have the potential to burry it, it should do some good box office.

Yeah, it really just has this week to do good numbers - as I'd really think its going to be all about Indy next week (or for the next few maybe). Plus, like you mentioned, Iron Man is getting that good word of mouth to get new business each weekend. I think they might have been better off releasing this (Prince Caspian) in December, like the previous Narnia movie. That one did just fine in that time frame, and the competition isn't nearly as bad that time of year.
-
I saw Narnia:Prince Caspian. I thought it was good. Not as good as Iron Man. But still an enjoyable movie. Plenty of battle scenes and stuff. We will have to wait and see how well the movie does. The three part threes from last summer were all released in May and all hit $300 million, so it has a chance. But the one I am looking forward to is Indy.

As part of the billion dollar Disney's California Adventure makeover, the Muppet*Vision 3D show will be replaced with a 3D movie based on the Chronicles of Narnia. See below for the link.
Remember that "Mickey's PhilharMagic" attraction that was supposed to appear where the Muppets are now? The size of the building and the retrofitting cost of it killed that, but what winds up there might please many a Disney fan... and many a C.S. Lewis fan. Yep. That's right. The attraction taking the place of Kermit and Miss Piggy is going to be based on the world of Narnia and it'll be in 3D. The Imagineers are focusing on creating a narrative that wraps the guest in the world of Aslan... it should be pretty nice, I'm just not a fan of wearing glasses for every ride.

December would have worked especially now that Star Trek has been bumped into 2009. Besides, then all the Christians could hold it up against the new Harry Potter. :P

Saw it tonight with the fam. Good movie..bad acting...actually Peter Dinklage stole the show as the dwarf Trumpkin. He gave a great performance.
I don't know what it is about the Narnia flicks...They are entertaining to me, I enjoy them, they are impressive, but tehy just lack a certain energy...I just don't get excited watching them.
-
Besides, then all the Christians could hold it up against the new Harry Potter. :P

I resent that >:(
Not all christians think its bad. The christians who think harry potter is evil shouldn't even let there children watch disney because theres magic in every single classic one. Please don't lump us all into one group.
I'll probably go see it tomorrow afternoon. I have family in town right now, or I would have watched it Friday night.

I agree, my famliy enjoys both franchises for what they are, I didn't know you have to like them exclusive of each other...
We went to see Narnia this afternoon. It was a good movie and I'm glad we caught it on the big screen as oppossed to waiting for DVD. I did like the first one better, but this one is good.
-
I went and saw it on friday and thought it was a little better then the first film as far as action goes. I will probably see it again with my family who haven't seen it yet.
-
TRU has a buy 2 get the third free offer on these figures if anyone's interested.
-
Saw this yesterday. A fairly decent fantasy-action movie, just didn't get me too excited though. Iron Man is still tops as far as 2008 summer movies go.

Prince Caspin makes a great Darth Caedus (Jacen Solo) from Star Wars Legacy Novel Series.

I didn't see this mentioned yet:
Disney Ditches Narnia (http://movies.ign.com/articles/941/941081p1.html)
From the article, it sounds like Disney has pulled the plug on "Voyage of the Dawn Treader". Its possible that another studio could pick up the franchise, although that hasn't happened yet. Kind of disappointing, although the recent "Prince Caspian" didn't do nearly the business that "Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe" did. We finally got a chance to see Caspian when the DVD was released, and although I enjoyed the first one quite a bit more, it was still pretty good. This is one franchise I think might have been better served leaving it in the winter months, around Christmas, like the first one was. Studios seem to want to move these movies to the summer for the big blockbuster times, but the competition is getting stiff there, and I think movies like Narnia might be better suited for a holiday release. Heck, even though all the movies do great regardless of release, I sort of liked the Potter movies that time of year as well. I don't know why, they just seemed like "winter movies" to me.

Per Blue Sky Disney:
BlueSky Disney (http://blueskydisney.blogspot.com/)
Also, over in Hollywoodland(now known as Hollywood Backlot), the plans for the Muppets redo are still in flux as they decide if they're going forward with the Narnia retheme. The box office numbers were less than what the Mouse expected and it's not known if this or another planned attraction will move into the Muppets old home. Something will go there, but it may not be C.S. Lewis' children's fairytale.
And then this...
Wow, no sooner than I mention that the Narnia makeover of the Muppets building at DCA is in jeopardy we get this news...
Walt Disney Pictures has decided not to pursue its option for the third Narnia film. This doesn't mean it won't happen, but Walden Media will have to find another partner. So the film may still come out, but it won't be a Disney picture.

Brian, I think you hit the nail on the head with the lack of success of Prince Caspian, compared to The Lion, The Witch and the Wardobe is because they released it in summer as compared to Christmas. Way too much competition with the summer blockbusters like Iron Man.
-
Who would have thought that Batman would suck all the air out of the room last summer. No way would Caspian make any money. I guess its all for the best. Those kids are way too old for the roles now.

A few clips (http://vimeo.com/14276605) from the upcoming "Voyage of the Dawn Treader", coming in December. Also, if you haven't seen it, the trailer (http://vimeo.com/12646839) was released a little while back as well. Honestly, I haven't read this book yet, although I always intended to get to the entire series. I loved "the Lion..." movie, and thought Prince Caspian was ok, but not sure if we'll catch this one in theaters or not yet.
-
Full Trailer (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=71516) for "Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is up. I have to admit, I haven't really read the books beyond "The Lion..." (and checked out Caspian prior to that movie), but it is amazing to me how much steam this movie franchise has lost since "The Lion...". That movie was huge that year, and it seems like after Caspian bombed not many care about this franchise anymore. Maybe the box office will prove me wrong, I know I'm still interested in seeing it (although I may end up waiting for the DVD release like Caspian, since it is tougher to get to a lot of movies in the theater these days). I suppose I should check out the book in the meantime.
-
It feels like that movie was already released. It would sure piss off Disney if that movie did better than Tron.
-
"Dawn Treader" is one of my favorite books from that series so I'm kind of hoping the movie is good. I still haven't seen "Caspian" even though I also liked that book.
After "Lion" and the two mentioned, I didn't like the rest of the series as much, although "The Horse and His Boy" isn't completely terrible.
