payroll is over $50 million larger than the next biggest (about 33%). They went out and threw stupid money at Teixeira (9 years, $180 million), Sabathia (7 years, $161 million) and Burnett (5 years, $83 million) - and that's only this year. I like the Yankees. When the Rays are out of it (which is most of the time) I root for them. It's their prerogative to spend whatever they want to, and it's worked brilliantly - but unlike lots of Yankees fans, I don't have any illusions about how the organization goes about building the team.
