Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Sick of scalpers
« on: January 2, 2004, 06:33 PM »
Man, I grew out of my "scalpers suck!" phase four, five years ago.

Sure, they still suck, but I don't see much sense in getting upset about them.  Seems almost counter-productive.  They'll always be there, and there's not really anything you can do about them, other than just not buy from them.

I mean, if that's what they want to do with their life, then ultimately, that's their business.  It's not the way that I would choose to do things.

Not that I've ever really bought or traded very much stuff online, but it's pretty easy to skip over and ignore the scalping stuff.  There are plenty of people at this and other boards who aren't scalpers, who always sell and/or trade at cost-plus-shipping.

Maybe I'm a little jaded or something; maybe things are different in Canada.  I've always felt that we've had it pretty easy here in the U.S. when it comes to collecting, and I might not realize what a pain-in-the-ass it might be for Star Wars fans who don't live here.

I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.

Alright, here's what I've got for my 'Cube:

  • Beach Spikers: Virtua Beach Volleyball (SEGA)
Decent game, I guess.  Bought it because it was <$10.
  • Eternal Darkness
Creepy, atmospheric psychological thriller.  Could probably be best compared to Resident Evil, but personally, I like ED much better than RE.  Got it for <$20.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and OoT: Master Quest bonus disc
Good stuff, although rather unnecessary now with the new Zelda Collection disc, unless you're a Zelda nut and have to have Master Quest, which is otherwise unavailable.
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
         No-brainer.
  • Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour
Just picked this up the other day for $29.99 at Target.  So far, it's basically just a GameCube version of 1999's Mario Golf for the N64, but that was great, and this is shaping up to be great as well.
  • Metroid Prime
         Another no-brainer.
  • Resident Evil
It's just a prettier version of the old-school PlayStation version.
  • Star Wars: Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II
      Solid.
  • Star Wars: Rebel Strike: Rogue Squadron III: Limited Edition Preview Disc
Bought it only for the 1983 Atari game, which is apparently also on the full version of the game, which I have yet to pick up.
  • Super Mario Sunshine
Eh. . .  Lost interest early on.  Decent game, I guess.  Just not the revolutionary experience that we got with Super Mario 64 a few years before.
  • Super Monkey Ball
Great, if not frustrating impossible at times.  Plenty for the single player to do, but it shines in multiplayer.  A lot of fun, and the sequel's supposed to be pretty good, too.
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee
Good game, just not my thing.  Probably another game where the multiplayer experience is better than the single-player's.
My GameCube want list:

  • Mario Kart: Double Dash
  • Star Wars: Bounty Hunter
If I've got an extra $20 in my pocket, and find this new for that or less, I'll get it.  No rush.
  • Star Wars: Rebel Strike: Rogue Squadron III
Waiting for either a price drop, or for more details to come in about the "Rogue Squadron Trilogy", which has been rumored to be coming to the XBox sometime next fall, perhaps to coincide with the DVD release.
Another one I've been hearing some good things about is the new Pac Man World 2/Pac-Man Vs. game, which can be found at Target for $19.99.  World 2 is your typical, crappy platformer-type game, I believe, but Vs. is supposed to be the highlight here.  From what I hear, the multiplayer is really fun and good.

Also heard a lot of positive stuff about Viewtiful Joe.

Now, there are a few games which are available for one or two of the other systems, and personally, in those cases, my buying strategy is this:

XBox<GameCube<PS2

I don't know if that makes any sense or not, but basically, if a game comes out for both the 'Cube and the PS2, for example, I'll go for the 'Cube version (thinking about Bounty Hunter here).  Likewise, if a game (thinking of the two Jedi Knight games) comes out for both the XBox and the 'Cube, I'll always take the XBox versions.  And obviously, if something comes out for all three systems, I'll take the XBox versions over the other two.

Other recommendations for your 'Cube (if you don't have them already, of course) would be a (wireless) WaveBird controller, which kick the crap out of the regular corded controllers, and the 251 Memory Card, which is plenty big (if you're not putting sports saves on there, anyway).

And if you're feelin' especially crazy, you might even pick up a Game Boy Player for your 'Cube for around $50.  It plugs into the bottom of the 'Cube, and will basically allow you to play any Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance game ever made, through your 'Cube, on your big TV.

Hey, kids.

So, uh. . .  For Christmas, I got this nifty little "movie trivia day-by-day calendar" thing from Suncoast.  Typical stuff, but as a bonus, at the first of every month of 2004, they put in a coupon for their store, good for that month only, that you can use. . .  to buy stuff. . .  at their. . .  store.

For example, for January, they've got a "$5 Off any Anime DVD" coupon, for any Anime DVDs regularly priced at $19.99 and above, good from 1/1/04 to 1/31/04.  Now, two things here:

 - I have no interest in Anime whatsoever;

-and even if I did, I sure as hell wouldn't be buying anything from Suncoast, with their usually-exorbitant prices.

But anyway, I figured that maybe someone here would be interested, for whatever reason, and rather than just throw the coupons I'm not interested in away, I thought I'd offer them up to you guys.

So, if you want a coupon, just post a reply to this thread, first-come, first-served, and send me a PM with your mailing address, and I'll drop it in the mail for you.

(I will reserve the right to keep any coupons that may interest me--which, flipping through, it doesn't look like that many of them do.  But I'll update this thread each month with a new coupon for that month.)

What do you guys think?  Does this idea suck, or does it suck?   :-\

(And post a reply if you want the $5 Anime coupon for January.)  :)

Yeah, I mean, I like it and all, and have ever since it came out when I was in second or third grade, but honestly, I don't really give it all that much thought.

. . .

What?

Just ordered my Zelda Collection disc/Nintendo Power subscription yesterday, actually.  $19.95 total.

There are three "official" ways to get that Zelda disc:

(If you don't have a GameCube yet):

1. Buy it in the GameCube bundle for $99.95

(If you already have a GameCube):

2. Get it "free" with the one-year Nintendo Power subscription for $19.95 (although I consider it more like I'm getting the magazine for free, and paying $19.95 for the game)  :)

3.  Buy two of a select number of (first party) Nintendo GameCube or Game Boy Advance games, and register them on Nintendo's website.  Offhand, I don't remember exactly what the games are, but I know that Mario Kart: Double Dash, and the latest Mario Party games for the 'Cube qualify, and the new Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga for the GBA is one as well.  There's a couple more--I think one is the new 1080 snowboarding game for the 'Cube, and I have no idea what the other one is.  Anyway, there's five games to choose from, and you have to buy any two of those five to qualify for the deal.

Just as no Christmas could be complete without a viewing of A Christmas Story, no Christmas Story thread could be complete without this:

And, of course, the warm glow of electric sex:

A Google search for "leg lamp" eventually led me to this site:

A Christmas Story: 20th Anniversary: 1983-2003

Looks like a one-stop shop for all of your Christmas Story needs. . .

Looks good.  Nice job.

I like the idea of seasonal-type banners, myself.

Watto's Junk Yard / A Festivus, for the rest of us!
« on: December 22, 2003, 11:55 PM »

Many Christmas's ago, Frank Costanza went to buy a doll for his son. He went to reach for it because it was the last one, but so did another man and as Frank rained blows upon him, he thought there could be another way. The doll was destroyed, but out of that, a new holiday was born. It was called Festivus. No, not feminist, festivus. A festivus for the rest-iv-us..........

DECEMBER 23rd

The Holiday Itself...

During the last few weeks in December when Festivus takes place, families and friends get together at the dinner table and have something called "the Airing of Grievances". Durning this time, we share with family and friends all the ways they had disappointed over the past year.

After the Airing of Grievances, we get together right in the same night to do something called "Feats of Strength". This is where the head of the household tests his/her strength with another friend or family member. The great honour is given out to a different person each year. This year, Cosmo Kramer was given the honor but turned it down to George Costanza as he had an appointment.

Now for the pole. No it is not a tree. A pole, no decorations. Frank Costanza believes that tinsel is very distracting so there are no decorations. The pole is tall, silver, hollow, long, skinny, and heavy.

[The text here, I lifted from a similar post I made last year at R-------m (which I lifted from somewhere else before that).  The images, I stole from some other site just now.]

Anyway, Happy Festivus, Everybody!!!

. . .see if he will persevere.

Uh, "persevere"?  I'll say.

Anyone else watching this game tonight?

Favre - 15/18 completions/attempts, 311 yards, 4 TDs, and that's just in the first half.

Wow.

he plays a self absorbed underwear model. . .

(snip)

His I.Q. in this movie is a subjective thing. Or maybe not, since he is playing a male model. . .

What a stretch that must have been for him!   :o

(For those not "in the know", Kutcher was a model before he became a "star", and Demi Moore's boytoy.  And yes, I'm ashamed and embarrassed that I'm "in the know" on that one. . .)   :-\

Well, based on the movie previews from  last night's LOTR-ROTK previews you can probably add the following to the late 2004 list:

Harry Potter ___________

Shrek 2

It will be done.

Quote
There were a few other previews, none too notable, though Ashton Kutcher seems to have a role landed where he has an IQ above 3.

Yeah, funny that you mention that--I saw that trailer, too, when I went and saw ROTK (what else?) with a buddy this weekend.

We decided that:

Ashton with facial hair = Evil/dramatic Ashton
Clean-shaven Ashton = Funny/happy-go-lucky Ashton

I look forward to his Best Actor Oscar win in a couple of months for his brilliant work in Just Married.
