Sigh...The Family Truckster
« on: July 31, 2003, 02:00 PM »
Wifey put her foot down last Spring that she would not be driving my Mustang this winter to work after she went in the ditch with it.  I am inclined to agree with her so the hunt has begun for a new car

BEing on the road quite bit the past few months I have been able to test drive quite a few different models (Toyota, Dodge, Ford etc) for an extended period of time.  I'm thinking of getting a 4 door sedan as opposed to a SUV, pseudo-SUV or Wagon.  Taurus, Saturn L Series (we have a Saturn S Series now) and Toyota Camry are leading the way right now.

I am just in denial that my sportscar will be gone in a few weeks replaced by a 4 door Taurus or Saturn and it makes me sad...

Anyone have a similar experience or recommendations for me :'(

Ha!  Sorry to hear that Scott...   :-*

The Family Truckster, eh?  Well, I ain't into the family thing myself, so can't really offer any advice on it.  But I can say that was certainly one of the many classic moments in Vacation you've got pictured there.  That was a good car for the Griswolds, I tell ya'!  Transported the entire crew, including a dead Aunt Ethna at one point, all the way across the country.  I say you just get one of those!   8)

Then hopefully you can entice a hot blonde into driving next to you in a Ferrari (and maybe even doin' some skinny dipping too)...

Ah hell, just suck it up and go get a stinkin' minivan!  You know you want to!   :-*

Minivan's are a sign of the apocolypse.  I kid you not.

We're also looking for a replacement but for our Pathfinder.  It's six going on seven years old and they are pricy to fix.  Best to stop the bleeding now :'(

Taurus is a nice choice.  I have a couple of buddies that drive them and love them.  The six cylinder is enough to pull a trailer if it's not too large.

I'm intrigued by Saturn, but in Canada they are priced the same as the Japanese cars they compete with (Accord for example) and I just won't pay that much for a domestic vehicle.

Nissan is where we are at these days.  I drive a 98 Altima and it has been great. They are also considerably cheaper than the Camry/Accord/Passat or Jetta competitors and seem to be at least as reliable.

I've driven Honda's for a long time prior to the Nissan's but just can't part with the extra couple of grand they command in resale value.  They will indeed retain that advantage, but laying it out to begin with is difficult.

Were it up to me, I'd go in the following order:
Nissan Altima
Nissan Maxima
Honda Accord
Toyota Camry
Ford Taurus

The middle three are pricy, no doubt about it.  I think the Maxima belongs in a slightly higher category, but around here the base model is often comparably priced with Camry and Accord V-6's.  But it tends to have a better mix of features.  The Altima is a very nice dependable choice if you're looking for a 4 cylinder and especially if you can find a 2002 or later :o  The Taurus would be the most economical, price-wise of the bunch.

Good luck.

Wifey drives a four cylinder...another reason I'm thinking Taurus

No way in hell will you ever see me buy a Mini-Van

I also like I said, am not a huge fan of SUV's...poor gas milage, cost and the fact they tend to flip over turn me off.

Another factor, my buddy works for Ford Credit, he said there is a virtual over-glut of used low milage lease return Taurus's on the market now that can be had for $12,000 and down... :'( :'( :'(

Well Scott, I'm an owner of a Volkwswagen Jetta, and I don't think I would ever own an American car ever again.  I've had my car for 5 years, have only had one problem with it (needed new tires after 35k miles which is expected).  It's a 4-banger, but has tons of pickup, is very fast, and has an awesome trade-in/sale value to it.  I paid $19k for it when I bought it 5 years ago, and it's about that same price today.  I was thinking about trading it in for a better, beefier, more luxurious Jetta, and the trade-in value was $14,500.  After 5 years it only depreciated $4,500!  That's incredible!

My wife traded her Ford Escort (sporty version), and after 5 years her car was only worth $3,000.  Now her car was in mint condition, but it wasn't getting her good gas mileage since she drove an hour one-way to work every day.  She lost about $14,000 in total value of the car.

So, this is one reason why I would never own an American car again.  They have no resale value at all.  For a family car you could go with a VW Passat.  If you think they're pricey, they're just about the same price as any other car in its class.  And let me tell you one thing... if you test drive a Volkswagen you'll be going home in one.  You'll immediately fall in love with it on the spot.

And no, I do not work for Volkswagen.   8)

I concur with Chris.  Volkswagen holds its value extremely well, as does Toyota and Honda.  We bought a used 1989 Accord in 1994 for $6000.  I wrote it off in an accident (100% the other persons fault) in December of 2000.  We got $4500 for it.  6 years, depreciated $1500.

Nissans do not hold their value as well as the above mentioned companies but they do hold value better than domestics do.  That's why Taurus' are so cheap on the used market.  Maxima's retailed up here for about $29K in 2000 and you can find one for $19K now.  Accords from 2000 retailed for about $26 and still can retail for about $21.  Both hold their value well.  2000 Altimas retailed for about $23 and now go for around $16.  I don't know what Taurus retailed for but they are pretty darn cheap relative to the others.  I can pick up a nice 2002 Taurus with about 36K miles for about $12K.  Good deal, but you'll lose on the resale value.

Do note that vehicle prices in Canada are obscene relative to the US, so adjust accordingly.  Better yet, bring powerful Yankee green back to Canada and buy autobile here for cheap.

I will note that I find Jettas to be uncomfortable.  They don't have enough legroom for my liking and the headroom is diminished IMO.  Not that it makes them a bad car, I just find the others I listed to be more comfortable personally.  I am 6'2".

Add two more inches and that is why Jetta, Corrola, Contour etc etc etc Mid-Size 4 doors are out.  I really can't justify sinking more than $15,000 into any depreciating asset...I would hope I can get a good 7-10 years out it so that is another factor in going cheaper, both cars should be around the same resale.trade in value when i decide to get rid of it :-*

I'm 5'10" and the Jetta has plenty of legroom & headroom for me... at least in the front seats.  The backseats have decent headroom, but the legroom is pretty poor.  I hardly ever tote anyone in my car, so that didn't matter much to me when I bought it.  If you want legroom & headroom... get a Passat (if VW is the way you decide to go).

I know one thing though... I'll never own an SUV.  They're the biggest waste of money.  People drive SUV's like they're a Mercedes Benz, where they never drive it like it's meant to be driven.  They suck down way too much gas.  They flip over easily.  Just because they're big in size, doesn't mean they're going to save your life if you get into an accident.

Actually, it's kind of funny.  we drive a Pathfinder.  By all rights an SUV and we take grief over it.

1.  It's a six cylinder, gas consumption not much worse than a Maxima.  And better than most mini-vans that no one ever complains about.  Further, we maintain it very well, so it runs much more cleanly and efficiently than some older Volkswagen that no takes care of and is spewing blue smoke out the exhaust pipe.

2.  They don't flip that easily.  Consumer reports cited that a long time ago. They were sued and lost for falsifying the report last year.  That is essentially an urban myth, the media chose not to bother reporting the verdict, it didn't scare enough people or fit with their world view.  SUVs do indeed have a higher center of gravity, but if you expect it to do what is done in the commercials, you deserve to roll for lack of brains.

3.  We drive it in the city.  Yup, lots, we can't afford a third vehicle to sit insured in the driveway so we don't offend someone by having the gall to drive it in the city.  We also use it for pulling trailers and going picking berries and mushrooms on roads where something like my Altima or your Jetta would end costing about $1500 in repairs and towing just to get it running again.  Just because you see them in the city, don't think they aren't used elsewhere.

4. Nope, not going to save your life.  But the downsizing of cars has had a corrolary effect on mortality.  Remember the old Mercury Meteor?  What do you think that would do to a crappy little echo or sprint?  I completely disagree with anyone that suggests they are a danger to the road because you drive a small car.  Ban the minivans first, then talk to me about these.  Excessively small cars like a sprint or other 3 cylinder cars are at least equally dangerous.  While it's never said, being able to accelerate out of a potentially dangerous situation is just as critical as being able to brake to avoid it.

How many 8 cylinder cars are made anymore?  What would you propose to use for towing or in areas where ground clearance is necessary?  Just cuz you don't go out anywhere from the city limits doesn't mean the rest of us are shackled to the neighbourhood.  (said facetiously)  And not everybody just drives on smooth tarmac.

Sorry if that seemed harsh, but think a little beyond the fact you can't see past the car in front of you.  Yes, I know lots of people don't do what I do with my vehicle, but how do you know what anyone out there is doing?  You don't. :-*

I have no problem with people buying SUV's to tow campers and boats or to actually go off roading in the wilderness (Like we do w/ my dad when we go hunting).   I do have a problem with Soccer moms driving Excursions to and from Girl Scouts with one kid in the backseat...

I think my wife actually would like a mini-SUV but I don't want one (I have no room for a boat or camper at our house) and have pretty much talked her out of it :)

That's my biggest beef about SUV's, is that the majority of people who own them don't use them for what they're designed for.

As far as mini-SUV's go one of my friends just bought a Jeep Liberty, and it's an awesome vehicle!  Gets decent gas mileage for a mini-SUV, it looks sharp, and it's huge on the inside.  The price tag is pretty nice too, if I remember correctly.

Here's my dream car; little, efficient, and cute as a button. I think a car should take up as little space as possible for one's needs (just don't tell my boyfriend that, he's got an SUV and an old Cadillac). Having kids or lugging around big stuff requires a bigger vehicle, but for me, this one's juuuuuust right.  :)

If anyone else is looking to buy a car, I suggest looking at Hyundai. I've driven my 2000 Elantra 60,000 miles and haven't had a single problem with it. I've changed the tires, oil, and all filters at regular intervals.

I'm buying one of those groovy Santa Fe's when I'm done with this one.
