Title: Photonovel by Robo-Quack: Coming March 2007: Preview is now up!!!
Post by: David on December 16, 2006, 10:32 PM
Coming Soon in 2007, I am starting a photonovel series here at JediDefender. The title is not revealed yet, mostly because I havent made one up, but I already have a storyline figured out. So stay tuned and keep checking for updates. I'll give some more plot stuff away probably over the course of this week.  8)

I'm not sure why you cancelled it... I'd suggest you work hard on what you are doing, and give the first few chapters a shot and then see what kind of support you're getting?

Really though, these should come down to you wanting to make them and making yourself happy with them.  Maybe make them, don't show them to anyone, then a few months later look at what you did, and think of what you could have done better.  Or just wing it and post your first attempt.

Over the past few months, I have tried to bring attention to the lack of comments that many wonderful photonovels have received.

In this case, though, and with all due sensitivity and respect, I think you need to lighten up a bit.  I'm not try to be harsh, but all you did was post your intentions to make a photonovel with a few vague ideas.

It's not exactly something that's going to get a lot of commentary, or even something that warrants much discussion.

Don't talk about making photonovels, just go out there and make them.  THEN we can talk about getting you more feedback.

But just saying, "Yeah, I'm gonna make a photonovel in 2007" isn't really enough to fire much of a conversation.  Lots of people post these kind of declarations and many never see the light of day.

Based on the very little info you've given, sure I think your idea has promise, but you've given us very little info and it's just way, way too early to begin discussing your photonovel in any detail.....

I do agree with Chewie, make the stories first because YOU want to make them....no matter how good they are, your audience may remain small.  But if you're proud of your work and have fun doing it, no one can take that away.

I for one Love these Photonovels It shows off some of your customs and conveys creativity as a shortstory author. When I get enough knowledge to do the same I will also, but I'm not so much a computer wiz.I hope this gives you some incentive.Sometimes it takes a little while for something to catch on.I hope you do photoalbum. It would great to see. ;)

That's something to look forward to.  I was worried that i came across as too harsh, but I was hoping to encourage you.

Good luck with the stories!!

you know at first i could understand your plight, but then i looked closer and realized with the customs you've done in the past and your liitle story spoilers this isen't really gonna be much more than a bunch of action figures in your backyard..em i right?

so whats with all the support around this? there are plunty of ppl putting tons of WORK into their pns whom are not even getting a full sentence of support from these forums and your whining over no one giving a damn for your pn " idea"  or intentions that has no pics, no customs and probably no story that was brifely thought up while you played with your figures in the backyard hoping no one sees you engaging in a deleted scene from the white and nerdy video.

and i can hardly wait to see deanna rash say something negative.

anyways, even if you top the supposid set quality of the pn, no one will notice snaggle. no one will care, if your story is original. no will care if your effects are better than everybody else.  quite simply Photo-Novels are what you make them for, not these ppl whom can't see past their own work. let alone actually read it and give you some sort of review that isen't little more than a poster tagline. in the end if you do this, just remember you're still gonna be a grown man playing with action figures.

I like to encourge and not discourge because people like to hear it If I don't like it more often than not I won't even comment. My tastes are not everybody else's.But you won't learn anything if you don't do not try.I'm a new member and I don't want to offend.I commend most of them for doing the work.Because I don't know how.
I just recently figured how to scan my drawlings onto the web,Which by the way can be seen in the Fan Art section. When get enough knowledge I'll do a PN,I'm good at customs but not stories

lemmie just put what i wrote simply:

Tyler Durden: Warning: If you are reading this then this warning is for you. Every word you read of this useless fine print is another second off your life. Don't you have other things to do? Is your life so empty that you honestly can't think of a better way to spend these moments? Or are you so impressed with authority that you give respect and credence to all that claim it? Do you read everything you're supposed to read? Do you think every thing you're supposed to think? Buy what you're told to want? Get out of your apartment. Meet a member of the opposite sex. Stop the excessive shopping and masturbation. Quit your job. Start a fight. Prove you're alive. If you don't claim your humanity you will become a statistic. You have been warned- Tyler

Ok everyone, let's get along!

I agree that a lot of the people out there don't seem to give much feedback on photonovels these days.  Back in 2005, photonovels were very popular, people seemed to really be into them.  For certain reasons support seemed to dwindle down for them about a year ago.  I am not certain what all the reasons were, but I have heard rumblings that a segment of the forums found them annoying and thought we were attention cravers, and because of that, the promotions for them came to a halt.  In part that was why I had an absence from here, but I was also busy with a position at another site that I was offered.

The good thing is there is still a photonovel section here.  People still read them apparently, but feedback is rarely given.  I will admit, it's very discouraging to not get feedback when you truly work on something and put your heart into it.  But that's just the way it is - most people don't feel like replying back with a full commentary on what was made.  But the level of work that goes into them is a factor as well.  If you truly try and make something creative and create a fun storyline that peaks people's interest, you're probably going to get more responses/feedback than if you just take pictures of figures in a back yard.

I don't get all that much feedback anymore, but I know people are still reading them by the views, as well as I do get PM's and emails about them too.  But I know that each one I make needs to have more work put into it than the last one.  I constantly try to set the bar higher for myself because I know that what I make isn't nearly as good as I want it to be.  That is why I've redone the series that I work on - to improve my stories.  I've probably lost some readers by telling the same story again, but I have also gotten new ones too.  Plus there will be NEW ones made eventually, just not for a while.

The strangest thing though is when someone makes a photonovel and complains that they haven't gotten feedback, even though that person doesn't leave OTHER photonovel makers feedback.  That's just odd.  So I guess what comes around goes around.  Remember if you want people to participate in what you are doing, it's a good idea to take an interest in what they're doing too.  If there are customizers on a board (who are potentially your biggest audience) - start leaving them feedback on what THEY do, and they are more likely to take notice of your work and return the favor.  It's all about a community, which is something I've been pushing for years.

THANK YOU for breaking THAT up!  ::)

PS- In that last paragraph, though, I do have to say: I leave feedback to your photonovels, to Deanna's artwork, to Jesse's reviews, to Angry Ewok's artwork, to several little newcomers i cant even remember the names of's photonovels. that's one of the things that made it a little disappointing not to get much feedback.   ;)

oh, and something I find a little strange, odd, with just a touch of ironic, is that I get like one reply when I introduced my photonovel, but when I say im cancelling it cuz i wasnt getting much replies, that was when i got all the replies swarming in. and most of the feedback was negative and critical, you know who you are...

just thought id point that out.
Title: Re: New Photonovel by Snaggletooth

Well, nothing against Jesse or Angry Ewok, but I don't think they leave too much feedback on customs/photonovels from what I've seen.  Not to say they don't appreciate them though.

I think people find it a lot easier to criticize or even encourage someone than it is to compliment them - does that make sense?  Meaning it's a lot easier to complain for NOT doing the photonovel than it is to compliment you for trying to make one.

Also, I'm not sure if you're familiar, but at another forum there was a time where people seemed to post non-stop saying "they were going to make a photonovel" and then a month later, start another thread on it, etc.  And never get around to it.  So many people were afraid that was going to happen here.

Anyways, I still say go for it!

Yeah I knew what you meant with Jesse and Ewok.  They're great guys and I'm sure they would read/comment on each photonovel if they had time.

As for getting started, I think the best way to discover some of the tricks are through experimenting, but there's always useful tips too.

You've made some really good customs from what I see on your custom alliance page and take great pictures - the picture quality is a real eye catcher.  With the customs you show that you will probably have a good variety of characters, including some original ones.  I think that's a very good thing.

Also it's not essential, but dioramas are a lot of help for a photonovel (unless you know how to make all digital backgrounds).  You can go pretty simple with cardboard for a floor/walls - remember you can rearrange the scenes too a lot to look like different rooms/settings.

You could always make a few preview pics and show them for feedback too.

My advice...

Do what you want because you enjoy it, and don't count on feedback...  Blankly positive feedback is pointless and doesn't improve anything but your feelings about yourself.  Blankly negative feedback is equally pointless and doesn't help anyone learn or expand...  The customizing world at large isn't what it once was, but it's also not a niche of the hobby that is everyone's cup of tea.  It's a hobby though that you should do for your own personal enjoyment, and that includes photonovels.

I wrote SW "fan fiction" when I was in school because A) it got writing assignments completed with a creative flare that got me good grades, and B) I enjoyed it and stomached it more than trying to make up random stuff in my head.  It was a good unvierse to work in...  I didn't do it to entertain my classmates or because I thought I'd get a pat on the back or anything.  I did it to appease myself.  Selfish, but it worked.

So customize or whatever it is you do with happiness and there ya go!  Don't fret on feedback.  It'll either come or it won't.

PS:  Deanna, you can share opinions regardless...  You can say if you don't necessarilly like a paintjob, just make sure to be constructive and back it up with WHY you feel like you do, and how they can improve (if you think they can).  Positive is great for sure, but positive with some "help" is ok too.  If people take offense to that, they need to grow thicker skin and maybe not be showing off their work on forums.

Enjoy folks.  Life is pretty.

just thought id point that out.

I never comment on people when they say they are "going to" make a photonovel.  For me, there's almost never a point.  If you want to start a PN, great.  If you want to announce it, great.  But I will save my comments for when the story actually gets made.  Even then, I sometimes don't get around to commenting as much as I'd like...

As Chewie said, many people would announce photnovels to never follow through.  I just don't see the point to talking about your unmade idea - unless, of course, you are actively soliciting suggestions or feedback about the story.  Otherwise, just go.....go make it and I'll be here when you're done.

The reason why this conversation DID develop was because Robo-Quack suddenly said he wasn't going to go ahead after the lack of feedback.  And then I felt it was a good idea to step in to offer encouragement, even if I think Robo-Quack might have been being a little overly sensitive about the whole thing.  (and, of course, other posters were a bit too, ahem, blunt in their replies, but that's another subject...)

Anyway, I've spent a lot of time lately talking about talking about photonovels.  And I'd much rather read and comment on the stories themselves.....so good luck to you all....keep up (or get going on) the great work!  I really do hope these forums become vibrant again in the new year.

Oh God, please...save us the post count. Could you just make your photonovel and get over yourself. If we're talking about photonovels not getting attention then spare me...there's already a thread on that and it's a rather dead issue. You post or you don't, your choice. I really couldn't care less which you choose. Announcements on the main page can help you a bit, but have little weight on whether or not I will read and comment on your photonovel or not.

Now go comment my new pic on myspace. I'll return the favor.

I hope you guys don't mind me jumping in on this lover's quarrel.   :-*

I just wanted to say that I think it's awesome to see someone so excited about making a photonovel.  Just from personal experience, I know that if you try to force it down people's throats, it's going to turn some people off.  Try not to be too sensitive about it when some people aren't interested in it, not everyone finds them as enjoyable.  And even those that do, sometimes would rather just lurk and read them rather than give you feedback.

So make them for the joy of making them, the rest will take care of itself.

Its coming, still under construction. Before the pn, i probably will be posting pics of my customs thatll be featured in it daily, in this thread, to tide everyone over. Look for the actual pn sometime around March, April-ish 2007, and for weekly installments until January-Februaryish 2008. im doing it in seasons if it consistently does well.  8)

2 months of promises, and 3 pages of responses, and still no photonovel.

No offense intended robo quack, but had you actually posted something other than a vauge idea and a proposal you might have actually gotten responses.

It takes a great deal of time to make a photonovel, trust me I know. It is mostly the reason why I haven't continued my own. and mine was extremely low tech, nothing like Chewie's. Which I have no idea how he does that as well as 50 customs a day. :P So yeah, i say it reallly sucks when people don't respond.

The problem here is you haven't actually done anything to back up the claim that youre doing this PN. So I don't really understand why youre complaining about no responses. ???

To say that you weren't doing it anymore because of lack of reponse is very childish.
Especially when you didn't have anything presented but a "Watch this space" promise.

I will be more than happy to read it when you get it finished, I certainly look forward to it. The only question I ask is are you actually going to get off your butt and do it or keep complaining that no one is taking you seriousley? Even though you have haven't actually done anything but tell us that youre going to do it.

Good luck with it either way.

I AM working on it. Thats all Ive said for the most part for about a week now, I havent really complained much about lack of responses because ive been getting a lot since i started to.

Read the whole thread before making accusations like that.

It WILL be here around March/April, but to tide people that are actually excited over. I will be posting customs thatl be featured on a regular basis, starting soon.

It DOES take a long time to make a photonovel. Ive been working on it since mid December, and all the drafts for the first six episodes are typed up.

PATIENCE!

That does look really good, looks like a lot of action, and a lot of fun!  Clearly you're putting a lot of work into this... is it easier to try using some real dioramas or are you going to use digital backgrounds for the whole thing?  Either way, wow - this looks great!  I'm really looking forward to it.

Milan: I like A'Sharad, too. He's one of Tempus's pals and he'll be a main character in my pn.

Darth Depressis: Thanks! All I can say about the Clone Wars stuff is: stay tuned. You won't be disappointed.

Deanna: Thanks as always for your kind comments and feedback. It is appreciated.

Jango: And I hope I can continue to have your attention: cause it'll be worth it!

Chewie: Thanks! I worked my @$$ of just for the previews, imagine how much work the first chapter has been! As for the backgrounds, it will be mostly digital, but maybe a few surprises. As a beginner to the whole pn thing, it is easier to do digital backgrounds. The characters are filmed with a bluescreen background. I hope the backgrounds still are realistic and cool everyone, feel free to tell me otherwise. I have a secret source for most of them.  ;) P.S. Chewie, i have sent you an important pn!

So, thanks for the feedback everyone! It is much appreciated! And STAY TUNED, for the best is yet to come...  ;)  8)

alright, here is a list of the Season 1 characters:

Tempus Delve- The Force has given this young Jedi Master the ability to travel through time and see the future.

Jempa- Tempus Delve's Whipid Padawan feels he hasnt been given much attention by his master.

Commander Greco- This clone commander is in charge of all ARC Trooper activity and has been given the responsibility of keeping some of master Delve's darkest secrets.

A'Sharad Hett- The famous Tusken Jedi from the comics is also one of Master Delve's closest buddies. He finds himself in the middle of very important matters.

General Cii- This Abyssin general seems very plain at the beginning of the season but slowly proves to be one of the more powerful characters in the series.

Kelloth- Kelloth has been missing on Rhen Var for months, but when he is found he has become powerful and dangerous. He is also Tempus Delve's former Master.

Count Dooku- What would any series involving the Clone Wars be without Count Dooku? Dooku is sending a powerful agent to do his dirty work. And when I say dirty work, I mean DIRTY.

Boba Fett- Boba has been sent by some1 not to be named yet to kill Kelloth, but also has a score to settle with Mace Windu for killing his pappy.

Chian- Jempa's buddy. He's that whole 'example of the kid thats better off' to Jempa.

Palps/Sidious- All I will say is that Tempus Delve is on to him.

Anakin Skywalker- Tempus will have visions of Vader and take them to Ani later in the season. Also things are getting a bit shaky between him and an Hett, for obvious reasons.

So, theres basically the main characters of Season 1, though there may be more characters throughout the series. Also, expect some cameos by familiar faces.

Some pics should be coming soon. look for the first chapter of Tempus in March.  ;D  8)

I agree; it's very interesting.  To me, nothing shows a greater interest/devotion to Star Wars than someone wanting to add to it.  It's a lot more than buying figures and opening what you choose.  This is a whole new dimension of collecting... at least from my perspective.

Robo-Quack, you have 200% support from me.  Bring it on to the community, and enjoy every moment of it.

That's a cool preview, I'm looking forward to reading it!

One question though, are those backgrounds homemade or did you find them on the internet? That's one of the reasons I've never been able to complete any of my series, I've never been able to edit the pictures and make any good backgrounds. Good for you for being able to do it!

i don't wanna answer for him, but they look like stuff off of video games, I've taken this approach as well with my pn. but as you can tell he's gone to the effort of constructing sets, much like chewie or brents. but i might suggest the program Bryce for such ventures, lots of freedom if you know how to use it.

Ok, depressis, you've found my secret. I'm using Battlefront for the most part. I hope it still looks realistic, cause it works for me!  :)

As for the first chapter, it is the answer to why I havnt posted here in a while-I've been too busy working my ass off taking pics to bring chapter 1 to you guys by March.  :o

I have written the first nine episodes so far. In writing, plotline-wise, they are kickass. I cant wait to bring this series to you guys.  ;D

And I have to reveal one more thing: Justin (CHEWIE) and I are working together to bring Rykrof Enloe himself into the series for a cameo!  8)

Stay tuned...

Sounds like it's going to be fun, if it's even half as good as it sounds, it's going to be great!  Sounds like a pretty original storyline too which is always a good idea.

Looking forward to it!

Guys...

I am very sorry for those of you that were even a tiny bit excited...
But due to unforeseeable and very unfortunate circumstances, my photonovel has been delayed and may not premiere for quite a while. I promise you, it is still coming, and it'll still , but I couldn't prevent certain events from interfering.

There are things in life that you wanna do, like make photonovels, but things you need to do have to come first, and that's what happened to me. I want to make this photonovel and I'm dying to share it! So, once again, I am so sorry I have to do this to you.  :'(  :(  :(  :'(

Things happen buddy... take your time, the people that want to see this will definitely come back... anyone who has made a photonovel before understands how much effort and heart go into these things.  Take care of the important things that need to be addressed, and hopefully you can pick back up on this in good time.
