Title: Customs for Disaster Relief Project
Post by: Darth Delicious on September 9, 2005, 07:34 PM
Like a lot of us, I've been watching the hurricane devastation in New Orleans, and have donated what I could to help the people of Louisiana.  However, I was thinking today (a dangerous pasttime, I know) that we have a hurricane victim right here in our little customizing community...our own Darth Ennis.

So what occurred to me is, what if we each made a custom figure and auctioned it on E-Bay, the proceeds of which we would then donate to Darth Ennis to help him and his family in the long road to recovery?

It might not seem like much, but with all the talented customizers we have here, we should be able to raise at least a few hundred dollars. I've not sold much on E-Bay, but AEseven's work alone usually nets over $100...imagine if we ALL participated? Every little bit helps, and we'd be helping one of our own.

What do you guys think?

It's a very nice idea.  I've only sold two customs on ebay, and neither went for too much, but I would be happy to participate.

At the very least, we could all send him something like some custom fodder.

I'm not allowed to use e-bay either; not cause I'm15 but because I don't have a credit card yet. If I made a custom and sent it to someone on the customizing forums, would any of you be willing to e-bay it off for me?

 BTW, DD: GREAT idea!

I'd love to sell a custom, but I'm afraid no one would bid on something I'd create. They're not complex or good looking most of the time. I'd rather just help out Ennis any way I can.

Let me see what I can cook up though.

It seems like the only thing that sells well on ebay is custom clones. No other character seems to sell very well.

Post by: tykrazen on September 10, 2005, 08:38 AM
I had a 501st clone I planned to post for the Red Cross, but I'll gladly do it for his family instead.  Count me in.

Should we make some standard language for all the auctions for Darth Ennis?  (1) To add some validity to what we are doing and (2)To better identify the auctions for people who know Ennis and want to help?

I think I can do this as well, I'll see if I have a custom worth selling on eBay, if not, I might have to make one.
I agree with tykrazen, we definitely need some sort of uniform item description.

Well, I can make customs, but I don't have an e-bay account. Could it be possible for me to send you a custom of mine for you to sell on e-bay on my behalf?

I just happened upon this thread by accident, I'm not really sure what to say, but thank you. It is really a good feeling to know that there are people that care about you. It actually took me a little while to respond because I was completely blown away. Even if this doesn't come to pass, I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart just for even thinking about me.

I still dont really know how much damage was done to my home, when we went down there they wouldnt let me go down the long stretch of road to get to my apartment because there were too many downed tree limbs and power lines. They said it was too dangerous to go any further until they could clean it up a little. But my car was unharmed.

As of about 12:00 today I should be on the road to Gatlinberg Tennessee where my roomate has been relocated. One way or another I'll get back in touch as soon as i can.

I have a custom clone that I made that I would be glad to put up. In rather poor taste I named him Commander Hurricane. If I can send it to one of you once I get settled, Id be happy to donate him.

BTW because of UNO being off line,my email is not working. I got a new homail  account, and the addy is as follows.

Darth_Ennis@hotmail.com if anyone wants to drop me a line.

Once again, Thank you, all of you.

Good city to be relocated to, I tell you what. Tons to do! Car shows all the time along the "strip" as it were. The coolest thing about Gatlinberg is either the Smokey Mountain Winery, or The Ripleys Aquarium. They have an underground tredmill tunnel through the aquarium and it's one of the coolest things I've ever been to. :)

We just like to help. :)

How will this go down? Are we consolidating all the customs into one uniform action, or what?

I think it'd be best if the customs were sold on e-bay separately rather than as a bundle. The way I see it, we could get more money for the relief effort that way.

And, Dartyh Ennis, it's good to hear you're safe and being relocated!

Glad to see so many people interested in helping! The sense of community on this board is really great; that's the reason it's my favorite online community.

I figure we can do custom clones or custom Jedi; those seem to be the figures that net the most cash. I'll write up some common verbiage that we'll post in each auction; maybe it would be good for one person to be sent the figures, and then post each auction individually and be responsible for sending them to buyers. The payments can then be paypalled directly to Darth Ennis.

What do you guys think?

I'll donate my Aqua Clone, if you think it'll sell.

I think we should send the customs for donation to DD, since I'm sure he's got a lot of Ebayers that check to see what he sells.

DD, if that's cool with you, pm me your address and I'll ship it asap.

The payments can then be paypalled directly to Darth Ennis.

What do you guys think?

That would work, as long as he can get online to let people know when the payments have been received and cleared so that figures could be shipped out. I think it might be better to have 1 person gather up all the figures and then post them, and collect all the money. After all the auctions have ended, that person could just send him a check/money order or paypal him - although I'm not sure paypal is really the way to go, since they charge you to accept payments (I think, I don't accept paypal so I'm not 100% positive). I also think that the person who does this should take a few $$ out of the end prices just to cover the ebay fees and shipping - they can add up in a hurry  ;)

It would also be great if we could somehow get some exposure on some of the Star Wars Collecting sites. Obviously, we can post a blurb on our front page here, but it would be great if some of the other sites would do the same. I'm guessing that StarWars.com would be out of the question though  :P

Oh, and I guess that you can count me in as well. Now, the question is what do I want to part with?

I'll take all the customs and throw them up on E-bay. I think I'll make a clone of some kind to put up there as well.

I really don't Ebay much though so i'm not sure if I have enough feedback to get really good results, I have no negatives but I'm not sure if I have any positives either.

DAMN! Why did I read this thread so late?

I want in as well. I'll see what I can come up with or have to sell.

Wouldn't it be interesting to make a "template" auction that we can copy en modify for our own custom?
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: Darth Delicious on September 11, 2005, 09:11 PM
There's still plenty of time to get in on this, don't worry.

I spoke with red5sixx, and he has agreed to auction the figures and cover the E-Bay costs. He has 100% positive feedback well into the thousands, and as part of that feedback, will probably get more for the figures than anyone else would.

Bjardkerr- I think your Aqua Clone would be awesome. I'm thinking of selling my custom Alpha with removable helmet.

Do we need to set a deadline on this? How about September 30th?

-DD
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: jokabofe on September 11, 2005, 09:59 PM
We might have to actually contact ebay and let them know what is going on... I'm sure there were hundreds of people who conducted "charity" auctions for Katrina victims, just like the thousands who conducted "charity" auctions for 9/11. Ebay might just shut down any auction that states it's for charity if it's not "officially sanctioned" - just something to think about.
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: Ruprecht on September 11, 2005, 11:03 PM
K, I agree DD, let's have red5sixx auction the figures, since he probably gets tons of page views.

I think the Sept. 30th deadline should be for having the figure in yours or your friend's hands.  That way he can list it and get it done by October 2nd. Then the proceeds could go to the beneficiaries as fast as possible.  I can ship my clone by the 18th to wherever, so send me a PM.  If we could expedite things by just donating figures already made, that might be better.  That way, the beneficiaries could get the help faster.

Jokabofe has a point:  If ebay has indeed terminated charity auctions for possible fraudulent causes, we need to cover our bases.  We would need to get all applicable info for the recipient(s) and call ebay to let them know a) we're auctioning stuff for charity, and b) whom exactly it goes to.  Maybe they have a standard process for handling such things.  Jokabofe, will you be the point-man on this?  I know Ennis is a beneficiary, but is there anybody else this is for?  We'd need their contact info, Paypal email, physical address (or PO if they can't get home), etc.

Of course Red5sixx would keep a portion of the money to cover expenses, etc., as previously mentioned.

Concur with all, none, or some of the proposal?  Let's get this figured out ASAP for obvious reasons.

Excellent...we'll make September 30th the deadline for mailing out your figures to me...then I'll take the pictures and Red5sixx can get them up on E-Bay.

Jokabofe: Appreciate your looking in to the E-Bay aspect of this.

Anyone who's joining us on this, thank you. PM me so I can give you my address.

Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: jokabofe on September 12, 2005, 09:20 AM
Well, here's the email I sent them:

Quote
Along with a few others, I help to run a Star Wars Fansite (www.jedidefender.com). Some of the forum members and I are looking to do some auctions for another forum member who lives in New Orleans, and we want to label them as "Hurricane Katrina Charity Auctions" - is this allowed? I know that there must be hundreds of "charity" auctions right now with people taking advantage of that label, but we are for real and I don't want ebay taking our auctions down. Can you please let me know if we would be able to post these auctions and state that all the monies collected are going to a specific person to help them recover from Hurrican Katrina? Thank you.

Now the question is, how do we sell "Custom" figures without ebay taking us down because of the LFL issue? I know that many auctions for custom figures have been removed by ebay over the years, but I didn't want to get into that with my initial email to customer service. I guess we'll see where this takes us first.
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: Phrubruh on September 12, 2005, 09:29 AM
With all the custom clones that have been on there recently, LFL has been pretty lax in taking down auctions. They seem to take down the guys that have multple auctions for the same figure.

Another idea might be to make a matching contribution for whatever amount your auction ends at.
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief

Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: Glassman6 on September 12, 2005, 11:05 AM
Or why not one big aution?  Or two or three with multiple figures?

THose might do better?
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: Gregorbian on September 12, 2005, 01:24 PM
Maybe if we could figure out what everybody is going to send to DD, then we would have a better idea of how to do the auction (group the clones, droids, jedi etc into their own auctions, or just have individual auctions for every piece).
I'm not sure what type of custom to send in, I might do another Rocket Clone if I have the time.  If it's getting too close to the deadline to send in the figures, I might send in a custom that I have already made.

Do we even need to classify the auction as a charity?  What would be the difference between notifying eBay that we will be donating the proceeds to a victim of the Hurricane and just having Red5Sixx send Darth Ennis the $$$?  (I'm asking because I honestly don't know, not to be difficult ;)).  Does eBay waive the fees if it's a charity auction?  Does this count as a charity auction?
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: Darth Delicious on September 12, 2005, 02:42 PM
Gregorbian makes a good point. I think we could just post the auction as a regular auction, but maybe in the description mention that the proceeds are going to go to a friend devastated by Katrina. I don't think E-Bay can get fussy about that...but you never know.

I don't think LFL will take down the auction... for one, like Phruby said, they've been really lax lately...and two, they'd look like douchebags taking down auctions where we're trying to help out a friend affected by Katrina.

I'll even post a link to this thread in the auction, in case anyone wants to check out the veracity of our claims.

I guess the only real question left is...what figure does everyone want to donate?

-DD
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: jokabofe on September 12, 2005, 03:20 PM
My only thinking behind that idea of posting auctions as being for charity is that sometimes people are willing to spend a little more money on stuff when it's going to a cause instead of going into someone's pockets, so to speak. I'm sure we've all seen stuff being auctioned off for charity that sells for well over and above what an item would regularly sell for.

I'm not saying that these figures are going to be fetching $1000 if we label as "charity" - but it might not hurt.

Either way, I'm fine with whatever. Just a thought.
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: Darth Delicious on September 12, 2005, 05:39 PM
That's a good ppint, jokebofe...well, we have a little time to decide this as we await E-Bay's response.

-DD
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: jokabofe on September 12, 2005, 10:17 PM
Well, from everything that I have been reading on ebay about this, it looks like we really can't list items as being for "Hurricane Katrina Charity" in the title, but I'm not sure if we can just mention in the listing itself that all proceeds from the sale of this item will be going to a victim of Hurricane Katrina or something to that extent.

Again, I just see that alot of the auctions that are listed as being for charity often go for more money than the items would regularly sell for, so I'd love to be able to tag these items as such. But it looks like it won't happen.

Now, if we can get some of the collecting sites on board for this - obviously here, RebelScum, Galactic Hunter, TheForce.net, etc. etc. we might not even have to worry about it. If we can get them to post news tidbits on the main page with links to the acutal auctions, that might drive more traffic to check out the items, and hopefully drive the final prices up.

Hey everyone, I am currently  Gatlinberg Tennessee. Ive been set up with a local Library so hopefuly I can communicate a little better. You are all being very generous, but I have no problem with sharing. There are probably several more people that could use this as well. You acn look in the Louisiana listing on the area reports section on RS. I set up a hurricane roll call thread a couple of days after the hurricane hit, several people responded, so if you wish you can put their names as well. there could be people hit worse than me, I still dont know.

Ironicly, September 30th is my birthday, thats kind of weird. ;D

I am in good spirits here, I snagged me a temporary job, and my roommates company put us up in som pretty sweet digs for the next month if neccessary. This place is much sweeter than my apartment back home, Im actually going to miss it when I leave. But who knows I may end up staying here, this place is nice.

My email is still the same Darth-Ennis@hotmail.com if anyone wants to drop me a line.
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief

I think jokabofe is on to something here. We don't need ebay to raise money. JD and the other star wars sites could run auctions on custom figures, exclusives and other toys from their main pages. Members could donate items to be auctioned off.

This could be a friendly competition among all the star wars sites to raise bids. Since this is charity work by the site staffs, 100% of the winning bids would go to the red cross to help everybody.

I could see daily totals saying that Jedi Defender is ahead on their auctions by $2500 over RebelScum. All together they raised $54000. You know how much Wise likes to be numero Uno so he would spam his forum members with email to bid on his auctions. But at least the spamming would be for something good instead of TRU advertisments.

This seems to be the most effective way to get the most money donated to help the most people.

Phruby and jokabofe that's a great idea. i would be more than happy to "advertise" the auctions on Yakface.com. i know auctions in the past that i have showed links to get easily over 1000 looks and plenty of bids. i haven't been able to post my normal Bounty Hunting articles that spotlight ebay auctions like i used to for many personal reasons, but i would be more than happy to help anyway i can for a worthy cause.

Well, here is the response I got from ebay:

Quote

Thank you for taking the time to write eBay Customer Support with your
question.  I understand your concerns and will be happy to explain.

Please remember if you fundraise on eBay, your auctions must comply with
our charity listing policy.  For more information, please visit us at:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/fundraising.html

Unfortunately,  there isn't a way to revise an auction and make it an
eBay Giving Works listing at this time.  You can only designate a
listing a charity auction when you first submit your auction.  If you
wish it to be an eBay Giving Works auction, you will need to end the
auction early and relist it.  I apologize for any inconvenience this
causes you.

In the "Pictures and Details" section of the Sell Your Item form on
eBay, you will be asked whether you would like to donate a percentage of
your listing's final sale price to a nonprofit. Click the "Add" link to
select a nonprofit beneficiary and to designate your donation percentage
(10%100%). Once you have made your selections, complete the Sell Your
Item form and submit your listing. Be sure to select PayPal or a credit
card as one of the buyer payment options.

Note: If you have not registered with MissionFish, you will be prompted
to create a MissionFish account to proceed with the listing. You will
need to provide your credit card information to guarantee payment of
your donation, and you must consent to terms in the MissionFish User
Agreement. You will only have to complete this registration process
once.

All of our charity auctions and fundraising efforts are handled by
Missionfish.  For the best assistance with your charity questions,
please contact Missionfish Customer Support at:

http://www.missionfish.org/Help/contactus.jsp

I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.  Good luck in all your eBay
activities and thank you for using eBay.

So it looks like whoever is going to list the items for sale will have to fill out all kinds of stuff to make it "official". Personally, I say screw that, let's just advertise them on the major SW fansites as being auctions helping fellow forum members. I can see that we've got the support of Yakface.com (thanks Keri  :) ) and obviously I can pimp these on our main page here at Jedidefender.com - now we just have to see if those "other" sites can put aside their differences - with us and every other collecting site out there - and just pull together for a good cause. Will they? Can they? Who knows.
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: Gregorbian on September 15, 2005, 07:59 PM
How would that (having the Star Wars Collecting sites host the auction) work?  Would people just submit bids via e-mail?  I don't really follow...
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: jokabofe on September 15, 2005, 08:11 PM
Actually, Master_Phruby kinda misunderstood what I meant. I didn't mean to have the SW fansites host the auctions, just to put them on the front pages with links, telling fans and visitors that the auctions were for disaster relief. We wouldn't have to post it "officially" at ebay this way, but people would still know that they were. That's what I meant.

Although, I'm sure that we could always do just what Phruby is suggesting - just have people email in a bid on a figure, and then the highest bid would win. Kinda the same thing that ebay does. We just wouldn't get as much exposure that way, I think.

We'd be better off making a page that explains what we are doing and just putting a link inside of each auction, showing the visitors/potential bidders what the idea is behind this whole thing.

I see what you're saying jokabofe.  I think that is a good idea and I agree that more people would see the auction if we put it up on eBay and at various collecting sites.
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: Phrubruh on September 16, 2005, 09:52 AM
The only problem with ebay is that we have to pay the fees on the auctions. I'd like to see 100% of the winning bid go to the red cross instead of just 90%. That is why I suggested we do the auctions ourselves.  I sure someone could come up with a page that could track bids. There is probably web software out there that can manage auctions for a web site.
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief

OK, now I'm a little lost... are we donating this money to the Red Cross or are we giving it to Darth_Ennis? If it's just to the Red Cross in general, it can be done through ebay by following the directions I posted above.

If we want to give the proceeds to one particular person, we'll have to work some other arrangements out. I was under the impression that this was what we wanted to do...   ???
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: Phrubruh on September 16, 2005, 12:57 PM
I just expanded your suggestion into something bigger than just helping one person with a couple of auctions advertised on the front page here.

I'm thinking more along the lines of Star Wars Customizing-AID spread out over multiple fan web sites. Each site would have its members donate items to bid on. The site that donates the most money to the red cross gets the bragging rights.

Just something bigger to help even more people.

Well, I think I'm going to "test the waters" with this idea, so to speak. I'm going to post an auction later tonight for one of my custom figures, and when posting it I'm going to click on the "Donate 100% of proceeds to charity" and select the American Red Cross/Hurricane Katrina Relief fund as the recipient of my donation. The only thing I don't like about this is that I need to put my credit card information in, and they will basically charge my card for the amount of the auction end price... meaning if I don't get paid, I'm gonna end up donating the money out of my own pocket... something I really can't afford to do at the moment. Especially since this is a check card that I use, connected to my bank account...

But, I guess we'll see what happens. I'm going to post a blurb about it on the front page here with a link to the auction, and then I'm going to email all the other websites about it, with a link to the auction, and we'll see if they post it on their front pages as well. Keep an eye out for it  ;)

Phruby- Red5sixx already said he would cover the E-Bay fees, as his part of the donation for Darth Ennis.

So are we ready to do this? Does everyone have a custom ready?

Well, I posted my auction this evening... I'm going to post it on the front page, as well as sending and email to as many of the other Star Wars Collecting sites that I can, and hope that they will all post it on their front page as well.

Super Articulated Red ARC Trooper (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6000809018)

If you know of any sites that would be interested in posting some of the listings, feel free to either send them here to this thread to read about it, or have them contact someone that has been posting here.

Yakface.com
FFURG
NiubNiub's Universe

Any others you can suggest? I'm sure there are a ton more than this out there... I just don't know too many.

What about SirSteve's Guide? Not that I go there anymore. Way too commerical.

It seems like Dan Curto's Customizing Alliance should run this. I know it doesn't get alot of traffic but it seems like it should be part of it.

The carded R2 unit (Carded figures typically sell better)
Sha'gi (since he's a fan fav)
The Wal-Mart Clone
Gold ARC Trooper

Yeah, that's how I usually do it when bidding on eBay... but since this is a for charity thing, I don't mind an early bidding war to inflate the price.  IMHO it seems a little scuzzy to snipe these auctions since they are for charity... just my $0.02 I guess.

I wasn't planning on ripping any of the sites that don't want to help out some people that could really use the help, but I think it's really ****** of them not to post it. I mean, really... is it because of the petty jealousy that goes on between the respective sites, and how that site doesn't like our site and vice-versa? I don't want to turn this into an us-versus-them topic (again, like we need another one of those) but I just wish that some people could grow up - even for just a few days - and come together to help out a good cause. That's all I ask. After that, you can hate my and my website's guts again. It doesn't bother me at all.

Children.

That particular kermit was taken apart for a refrebishment. The black hole clone trooper with jedi pack was a commissioned piece so I don't have it anymore. It would be easy enough to make a new one if I can find a clone trooper jet pack. Anyone care to donate one? I'd want to have it packaged.

The mon calamari dancer would be really hard to part with. It's not the easist figure to make. I'd be really bumed if it went for very little. The golden arc commander packaged in ROTS Target clone packaging is definately a possibility. I'd just have to change the artwork a little.

Another possibility would be to finish the walmart clone by giving him the blue vest. I could card him in the target clone packaging

First of all, what you guys are doing is great.  It's times like this that the SW community really shows its heart to people who think we're all just obsessive nerds.   :)

As for the site issues, I'd actually suggest contacting non-collecting SW sites as well.  I'd be willing to bet that some of the non-TFN affiliated sites such as Jedinet or T'Bone Fender's starwarz.com would be willing to post a link, and our very own Valin Kenobi could and would probably post a link on the CloneWarz.com site.

Basically, I guess I just kinda "jumped the gun" a little and posted this one on my own. I know that DD was going to collect all the figures from everyone and post them himself on everyone's behalf. I just decided to post my own figure myself... and I would say anyone else that wants to do that should... I don't see why we should burdon 1 person with the repsonsibilities of doing it all. If you want to post it yourself, you just have to sign up with "Mission Fish" which is the organization that handles charity through ebay. If you want to send it to DD, get in touch with him and work those arrangements out.

Either way, please let me know when your auction goes up and give me a link to it, so I can post it on our front page and ask (futiliy it seems) some of the other sites to do the same.

Yeah, he must have looked at the receipts from the Rebelscum store and didn't see any customers from that region of the U.S. so screw them, huh Phil?

I really don't see what the big deal is about posting a blurb on your main page? Is his heart really that black towards anything that originates outside his own little world? If he doesn't stand to profit from it, it's not worth his space? I mean seriously, what would happen if there was a natural disaster in his hometown, and he lost it all. Well, after I stopped laughing my ass off - which could be a few days - I would wonder how all those people are going to rebuild their lives. I've been seeing some stuff on the news about the area down there, and it's just horrible. Horrible horrible stuff that's been going on, and my heart really goes out to all of those people.

I think ty said it best with this quote:

As sad as it is to say, I think some sites are run by fans and other sites are run as a business.  Sadly many site users are unaware of that fact.

I didn't want this to become a bash RS fest - I know we've got enough of those here already - but damn, Phil... have a heart. I know it's in there somewhere, ya  Grinch. Maybe if I posted that 50% of the auction would go to the American Red Cross and the other 50% would go to Phil he would have posted it on the front page and allowed it to be stickied in the forum?

Sadly, I don't go to that forum any longer, after all the staff members from JediDefender.com were all banned... just for being staff members. I think they re-instated my account, but I refuse to go there just out of principle at this point.

I think it is lame that no one really knows about that other than those of us who were banned. I got the ax cause at one point they banned CHEWIE there too and I got really pissed off at Philip and Dustin. That was when I realized that this is no more than a business to Philip and he wants to eliminated anything that threatens his income, which would include anything that would possibly advertise JD, or anything not affiliated with him in some way. I think it really shows a lack of class on Philip's part. This has nothing to do with us at JD, it is a charity thing.

Greg- Excellent choice with the scout, I think it should sell really well.
Phruby- Same thing. While it is just a repaint, repaints sell. And I have yet to see any other silver/gold figures, that could fit in with Hasbro's line.

So should I sell my droid or make a clone custom?
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief

SLC - your droid is awesome, although I don't know how popular droids are in relation to clones.  There are a billion Clone Customs on eBay right now, and most of them are crap but they still get some $$$.  That's a tough call... I think the droid would make a nice addition though  ;D

I'm gonna make some charp pics and put him online asap.

Do we have a "standard" look for the auctions? If so, please post me a template.

I think I'm gonna go with my custom Darktrooper for this.  Don't know how much it would go for, but I'll take some better pics of it this weekend and then send it off to DD as originally planned.  I'd like to advertise it as a Battlefront Darktrooper, because in the game they seem quite a bit smaller (more like a normal soldier).

Why send it to DD?

DD is sending it to Red5Sixx (BlueDotToyz.com) and he will auction it off for us.  I thought we were doing it that way so that it was consistent.   ???

I'm shipping off my Super-Articulated Biker Scout today.... I could have sold it but I have a negative feedback from 4 or 5 years ago  ::)

I think I'm going to auction a Shadow Trooper Commander I painted last night. (To go with Hasbro's Target Exclusive.) I'll get some pics up this weekend.

I sent my figure to DD today  ;D

We definitely need a consistent text for the box.  We should mention something like this:
_______________________________________________________________________
A number of Star Wars figure customizers from across the nation (and the world!) are trying to help out the victims of Hurricane Katrina.  They have donated various custom Star Wars figures for auction here with all proceeds being donated to the Red Cross for Hurricane Relief.  These are custom made figures based on the Star Wars franchise and are in no way affiliated with Lucasfilm or Hasbro.  This is a charity auction, so please bid freely!
Here is how the plan came to fruition: Link to this thread

Charity Custom: name of custom figure/description
Customizer: your name or Forum ID
E-Mail: your e-mail in case anybody has a question about your custom
Figure Description: parts used, other pertinent information
Notes: any other information, such as if the figure is "sealed", articulation, etc
[/i]Pic(s) of custom[/i]
________________________________________________________________________

What do you guys think about that text?  I think it would be cool to have our information up on the auction in case anybody has any questions.  Good/bad?

I really doubt that having a negative feedback from that long ago would deter from your auction. Your doing it for charity.

I'm just going to bring this up but I see that jokabofe is currently the high bidder on Phruby's clone.  That might not be a good thing.  I don't think its happening but others might see that and the other charity auction by jokabofe and think something hinky is going on (it kind of looks like the bid is being run up).

Also, weren't these auctions originally intended to specifically help Darth Ennis?

Just my two cents, I don't think anything is wrong, just wanted to put it out there.

I think Zero Cool should win the first auction solely based on their name. I'm trying to produce something to enter into this, but juggling work (over 30 hours this week) and full time school has been really difficult.
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: Ruprecht on September 25, 2005, 04:04 PM
That's a good point Owen.  It could appear that way, either to other ebay customers or ebay themselves.  Maybe we shouldn't bid on each other's charity customs, since it could be construed as hiking the price for a buddy.  I don't know if that's the best way to approach this though, I haven't given it enough thought.

As for the recipients of the proceeds from said auctions, I too thought they were going to Darth Ennis.  My custom will be in the hands of DDelicious by middle of next week, and I want Ennis to be the recipient.  I have already donated things to the general population of Katrina victims.

Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: Phrubruh on September 25, 2005, 04:14 PM
These auctions are different from regular auctions. The reason is MissionFish will deduct the final sale price of the figure from MY credit card and donate it to the Red Cross. I end up paying for it. It's then my responsibility to collect from the bidder. Why would we up each others bids if we have to pay for it ourselves anyway? The final result goes to red cross no matter who bids. I don't see why ebay would care.  It would seem pointless to have shill bidding on charity auctions. Why have an auction in the first place if your just going to donate the shill's bid anyway?

Finally, ebay doesn't let you donate the proceeds to an individual. It has to be a charity group.
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: jokabofe on September 25, 2005, 04:22 PM
The original intent was to raise money specifically for Ennis, but Ebay would most likely take down any auctions billed as "Charity" unless they go through MissionFish. And as I pointed out earlier, I felt that auctions labeled as "Charity" generally make more money that auctions not labeled that way. I guess people are really just thinking about giving to the cause as opposed to how much something is worth.

As for my bidding on Phruby's auction... that's a good point. It was not intended to be something shady going on, but you're right Owen it could be seen that way. I just figured I would throw a bid out there since most of the guys here bid on my auction. But yeah, I guess it does kinda look like we're just trying to run the price up. But at the same time, I would feel kinda ****** about retracting my bid, since it is a charity auction.

Oh well, I guess I'll go retract my bid now anyway, and I guess we should not bid on each other's auctions if you are going to have a figure yourself. Of course, if everyone else is going to go through DD, then that really means that just Phruby and I can't bid on the rest  :P
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: Phrubruh on September 25, 2005, 04:25 PM
That's fine. I have 12 watchers on mine. For the rest of you, get out there and bid.
Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: Darth Delicious on September 25, 2005, 04:58 PM
The ones that come to me will only state they are charity auctions in the description, not the title, and the proceeds will go to Darth Ennis. Hopefully JD and the other sites will still link them. (I believe they will.)

I too already did an overall donation to Katrina; for my part, the customs auction will be to help out one of our own. (Darth Ennis.)

But I think it's great that others are going through Missionfish and giving on a larger scale. No matter how the political hacks try to divide us or make this a racial issue, it's nice to see us just come together as Americans and help, proving them wrong yet again.

Just a heads-up to DD and anyone else who might be using PayPal for their charity auctions:  A few weeks ago when Katrina first hit, another forum I am a member of set up a PayPal account and asked its members to contribute.  Since the site has one of the top 10 largest membership rosters online, a lot of money was raised in a very short period of time (30 thousand bucks in less than eight hours).  Without even checking with the account owner, PayPal shut the account down and froze the money, saying they had "received reports of fraudulent behavior."  They continued by saying that they would not unfreeze the account until the account owner supplied them with shipping numbers for the purchases made through the account (which of course were nonexistent since nothing was being sold).

PayPal also was going to skim their usual service fees off the top of the money that was going to charity, regardless of the fact that it was being done for people in need.  I guess PayPal really needed to buy that XM Satellite Radio for the people who are never there for customer service calls.   ::)

I don't know how you guys are handling the actual charity donations, what you're using for payment methods, etc., but I just wanted to alert you to the fact that even though it's being done for a good purpose, PayPal is, as always, out for itself.

Oh, and the account was eventually unfrozen and all money was refunded to the individual donors' accounts (who went on to donate directly to the American Red Cross instead of using PayPal as an intermediary), but only because the situation was reported from one side of the internet to the other and PayPal wanted to avoid a PR nightmare that resulted from them taking charity money for their own operations.

Here's a link to the story before it was resolved (http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2005/09/05/somethingawful_paypal/)

Title: Re: Customs for disaster relief
Post by: Gregorbian on September 26, 2005, 01:37 PM
CHEWIE - that darktooper is great, I'm sure it'll sell well.  Nice choice.

Phruby - I don't think selling these as a lot would be that good.  Things never go for as much in a lot, at least from what I've seen.  I think that putting them all up at the same time would not be that bad of an idea; most of the customs are varied enough that I don't think they will really compete against one another.  Plus, we want to make it easier on Red5Sixx - it might be annoying to coordinate a bunch of different charity auctions.

Personally, I think it was a way to increase DD's custom collection.   :P

Just kidding. ;)

The problem is time is of the essence. The general public is starting to no care about this anymore. It's falling off their radar very quickly. An example of this is how the first auction made $41 while the second made $24. I should have made mine a five day auction instead of ten.  Another would be the complete lack of new auctions and updates. Third would be no more postings to this thread.

Mine was sent in, albeit a bit late (sorry DD and Ennis).  However, judging how some very shitey customs are selling, I'm not worried about our well-made customs doing well, dollar-wise.

Just do a search for "custom clone" on Ebay and you'll see some serious crap selling just fine.

$306!  DAYUMMM!  Well it is a very unique and expertly done piece.

DD, I pm'd the parts list info to you, but decided to include it here as well in case anyone wants to do their own.

Aqua Clone parts list:

Scuba pack - Reverse-mounted 1:18 Elite Force seal rebreather.  I actually made 2 of these clones (1 for each of my boys - 1 of them didn't like his, so you have it now), and it took so long and was such a tedious process  that I was too lazy to paint over the number 17 on it.   :-[
Hoses -  are from, I believe 2 of the same rebreather apparatuses
Fins - also from the same 1:18 Elite Force figure
Tank thingie on leg - you guessed it, same-same as above
Knife sheath - various rubber parts scavenged from BBI, GiJoe, or SW stuff
Knife - bayonet from a GiJoe gun, shaved and cut to shape
Forearm blades - from the tip of a Cobra Moray's lance
Gun - base model is from the Cobra Moray's gun, truncated, and shaved.  Rubber piece from Lego tractor tread on the top of it, "flashlight" piece from indeterminate item.

Again, thanks to you and your buddy 5sixx for donating your time, effort, and money to this.

Nice to see it up. The link back to this thread on the auction description doesn't work.

E-Bay wouldn't post the link. Red5sixx had to repost the auction six times to get E-Bay to quit red flagging it for words like "Hurricane."

I'm thinking that since you did yours through Missionfish, the rules were a little more flexible.

That might be it.

I've posted links to the three new auctions for Darth_Ennis on Rebelscum, GalaticHunter and FFURG customizing forums.

SWStarTours.Net also has it on their front page. That's Kris's super web site all about Disney's Star Tours ride. We even have a forum to discuss Disney and Star Tours stuff. Check it out!

Hey DD,
can you have Red5Sixx add this pic to the auction?

Also, I didn't see a link to this thread in the auction, is he not allowed to do that?

I'll see what I can do.  ;)

bjardkerr: Do you have any decent pics of your scuba trooper? If not I'll take one of him tonight...

I've got the ones I posted in my customs thread here (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=7988.15).  The only other ones I have are in my Flickr account (http://flickr.com/photos/bjardkerr/).  If none of those will work, snap away!

Gregorbian: Red5sixx tells me once someone has placed a bid, E-Bay doesn't allow you to update auctions unless you pull them down and restart them.

bjardkerr: I'm going to use a few of your pics, but how would this picture be?  ;)

Product shown in fantasy situation. Ocean and fish not included. Some poses may require hand support.

Heh heh. That one will go up today. I think it's got the potential to earn more for Darth_Ennis than any of the others.

Speaking of Darth_Ennis, anyone heard from him lately?

So far Greg's Scout is in the lead, with my clone nipping at his heels. I have a feeling though, that bjardkerr's SCUBA clone is going to come up FAST.

You got to remember that Chewie has a rather large "Gene Simmons"-like tongue. It's so big that he can't get it back in his mouth. That is why he uses the  raspberry smiley. It's also the reason the chicks love him. :o

Hope everything is going well.  Did you receive any of the proceeds on any of the customs yet?  Hopefully you have, but if not we'll get rolling and get it to you.

How long have you been in Tennessee, and how long you planning on staying?  I was in Memphis a few weeks ago... are you anywhere close?

Sorry for the delays in responding to everyone. Ive been here in Seiverville which is about 5 minutes outside of Gatlinberg. Luckily for me most of my stuff survived. There was extensive damage to the building I lived in, and also to the resturaunt that I worked at. As such both of them will need to be demolished. So it looks like I'm here for the long haul. There is nothing for me to go back to so Im going to be making my way out here. BUt the job I landed here is beyond anything that I ever dreamed of, and life out here is so much better I dont want to go back. The Walmart out here is always fully stocked, and the women are beautiful and very freindly so who could ask for more. ;)

Im going to send DD a Pm with my new addy as soon as I can remember the correct one. Ive lived in 3 different places since I got here so I ned to get the correct one. this will be my permanent addy.

I still dont have internet acess yet so my messages may be a but sporatic.
