Title: The Findswoman's Customs: 6/25: VTSC-style Zuckuss (is anyone surprised?)
Post by: findswoman on May 15, 2006, 01:16 AM
Since so many customizers here have their own threads for posting their new custom figures, I thought I'd do the same -- if the mods and such approve, that is.

And for my first post on this thread, I offer a simple but (hopefully) satisfying custom that I've had planned for some time yet only recently acquired the parts for (thanks to Pendragon!).  This is Baron Fel, sometime Imperial TIE fighter ace and eventual defector to the Rebellion, in TIE pilot's attire.  The body and helmet are from the Saga TIE Pilot, and the head and neck -- which took some dremeling to attach properly -- are from ROTS Bail Organa.

I'm still working on my helmet hollowing technique, but this one fits reasonably well, and has only 3 holes instead of 4!  :D  Note also that I have two chest boxes for this figure: one with tubes, for when he wears the helmet, and one without tubes, for when he doesn't.

And now, without further ado...

Lol, Findswoman. Nice use of parts for Fel,  however the Bail head looks like Bail of course.  But some reference photos, paint apps, and maybe a little scuplty could fix that.  It is a close resembalence though, so it is a good idea to use Bail's head.

Can't wait to see more of your work.

Damn, am I the only one that likes that head? I think it's perfect. But, then again, I didn't think the head actually looked like Jimmy Smits' to begin with.

Maybe it's the eyebrows? You could make him look sterner buy moving the eybrowns down....

Maybe you just shouldn't listen to my advice ;)

Either way, I think he looks pretty cool...

Thanks for the posts & comments, guys!  :)

VF/501, 'fraid I think I agree with Pendragon about the head.  I too have never thought that the Bail Organa head looked all that much like Jimmy Smits, but the first time I saw it in the store I thought, "Aha!  Fel!"  and planned to use it someday to make this figure.  However I can double check what reference photos I can get my hands on just to be sure.

Someone on another board is telling me that his colors should be different to represent the 181st squadron, too.  What are those colors, anyone know?

Thanks again, and happy customizing!

Very cool figure so far Findswoman. There are some details that are missing though. As you can see he has red strips going down the sides. In this version he also has the white chest plate. He also has the white imperial logos on the sleves. Another one I saw is a normal tie pilot with red strips. The head works well for the comic book version since he has the facial hair. This guy would make a great group project.

Okay, red arm & leg stripes, gray breastplate.  Got that.  Thanks so much for putting those photos there, Phruby!  I'll give those colors a go.   :)

He would indeed make a great group project -- definitely go for it!

Very cool custom, FINDS!  Great choice of parts and I love how versatile the figure is, with the hollowed helmet and two chest boxes!

Very well done and I look forward to seeing more of your great work grace these pages!

Im anxious to see her tackle those 2 myself. I like the Fel, that bail head actually works very well. The saga tie pilot is probably the route Im going to take with my Fel. As usual youve done an excellent job. Now that youve got your own index thread hows about showing off some of your older stuff. ;)

Thanks so much for the comments, everyone!

You've just GOT to do these 2 Finds!

Believe me, I've been wanting to make these two every since I first saw that wedding scene in my copy of Blood and Honor!  The Soontir would be pretty easy -- just stick the Bail head or some such on a repainted Ozzel (anyone got one for trade?  :) ).  Wynnsa/Syal will be a good bit harder.  Perhaps some (heavily repainted) Ayy Vida parts for the bodice?  I'd have to think further about the head, though.

Darth Ennis, I've got tons of older stuff at http://www.findswoman.net! :)  But what the heck, since we're on the topic of Rogue Squadron comic books, I may as well showcase my two versions of Plourr Ilo, the Warrior Princess (http://www.findswoman.net/4inch/Plourr.html).  (Don't be afraid to click on the link -- I'm not using Geocities anymore!  :D )

More to come very soon, I hope, especially a BIG 12" custom with TONS of soft goods...

I was looking at your custom of Plourr Ilo (very nice!) and was wondering if that same Leia body could be modified for Wynnsa??

Finds, Fel looks great! I made this guy a long time ago and i wish i waited since fodder these days is so much better. You did his character justice.
One suggestion is that his neck looks a bit long, maybe sculpting the turtleneck pice of his flightsuit on will solve that. Then when the helmet is on, there wont be that much space.
Great chocie of parts.
I too think you should do the wedding scene.

There is a link to my website in my signature file, darlin'!

As for Wynssa, I don't know if that PLC Ceremonial Leia would work without a LOT of modification.  The shape of Leia's bodice and Wynssa's are completely different (Wynssa's got the halter top, Leia has a boatneck) -- and we all know from that other Plourr what a klutz I am at dremel sanding!  I'll keep looking around for something, though.  Maybe Oola might work, even... assuminmg I can get my claws on one...

Glassman, thanks for the comments!  I do indeed plan to sand down his neck and generally try to make it look more convincing (as well as add at least red stripes to his uniform).  More on that to come, I hope!

What about the ROTS Luminara Torso for the bodice?  Instead of dremeling you can use an xacto knife to remove the necklace, then add a thin line of epoxy to denote the edge of the fabric.

Nice Baron Soontir Fel figure.  The only thing that I don't like about it is the Saga TIE Pilot arms, I never liked them.  Of course, that's hasbro's fault.

Checking through your customs page, I love the 12" Zuckuss (on homeworld) upgrade and the female Gand figure.  They are excellent!
I'm kinda getting into 1/6th scale customizing (those hasbro upgrades that I did a while ago were a lot of fun).  I am going to make a 12" Leon the Professional, so I might need to ask you for some tips since you are the Goddess of Softgoods.   ;)

since you seem to be an expert on Gands, FW, is that a mask that covers their whole head or that actually what their head looks like?

Hey Esther,
Sorry I didn't get to your thread sooner. :-[ I'm glad you finally started a thread here.

Your are off to a good start on Fel. I really like how you made two sperat chest boxes. It alwasys looks goofy when the tubes are just kind of floating by the face. He looks good with the helmet on and off. :) I actually don't mind the Bail Organa head. I agree the neck may be a tad long, perhaps you could trim it down or like Glassman said, you could sculpt a turtleneck on to hide it a bit. I look forward to seeing the updated version!
Title: Re: The Findswoman's Customs - est. May 14, '06

Thanks for the continued interest & comments, people!

Just a quick (but unfortunately photoless) update on Baron Fel: As per people's much-appreciated input, I have repainted Fel with red stripes and a gray breastplate, and have done a bit of sculpting to his hair and to his turtleneck.  Photos to come tomorrow, if all goes well.

Tykrazen, if I have a spare Lumi in the ol' bodies bin, I'll give that a try.  That sounds like it could work.  The only thing is -- and I'm usually not one to worry about this, but -- the bosom on that figure may not be big enough...

Gregor, thanks for visiting the site!  Glad you liked wha you saw.  I have a 12" male pants pattern around somewhere, which I may be able to scan in and send you -- do keep me posted on your Leon custom.  I'd be glad to help out in whatever way I can.

RollaJedi, about the Gand helmet, I've actually been wondering that myself!  I have heard it called both a mask (implying covering just the face) and a helmet (implying covering whole head), so it's a bit ambiguous.  One piece of evidence for the latter, though, is the strange sort of "collar"-like piece at the back of Zuckuss's head in both 3.75" and 12" figures (see, for example, this image (http://www.rebelscum.com/photo.asp?image=/potf2/POTF2zuckussbk.jpg)).  That "collar" wouldn't seem to make much sense unless it were part of a helmet.   In any case, though, if it is a helmet, it's one that conforms pretty closely to the natural shape of their heads.  Just a thought -- hope it makes some sense.

Ryan, thanks for posting!  Actually, the two separate chest boxes weren't part of the original plan.  They kind of happened serendipitously.  I already had the box WITH tubes in my fodder bin.  The box WITHOUT tubes, however, I received in trade from Pendragon along with the pilot body.  I hadn't been expecting it -- he just threw it in out of the goodness of his heart, and the tubes were already cut off.  So it was just one of those things!

More to come soon, along with hopefully some new photos of Soontir and maybe... just maybe... something completely different.  :)

I've redone the Baron a bit.  He's now got the proper 2/181st red stripes and a gray breastplate, and a black turtleneck to cover the neck gap and long neck.  I've also done a bit of snading and repainting on the head.  Though gosh, even after all the work I put in, it STILL seems to look a heck of a lot like the Bail head... Oh well, you guys can tell me!  :)

Esther, the updated version looks great!

The red and grey really make it look like Fel. I like the mods to the hair and the eyebrows. If you still think it looks too much like Bail you could connect the mustache under to nose. The neck looks much better with the sculpted collar too. Great work! :)

Thanks for the comments, everyone, and for coming to visit!

Today's update, I'm afraid to say, is not SW-related.  Do we have any aficionados of P. G. Wodehouse out there?  If so, then this'll be right up your alley.  Here's my 4" custom figure renditions of Bertie Wooster and his manservant Jeeves, Wodehouse's two most famous characters. (Wodehouse's Jeeves is the namesake of AskJeeves.com.)

Jeeves and Wooster (http://www.findswoman.net/4inch/JeevesAndWooster.html)

And Bertie Wooster may not be a SW character, but he is made 100% of SW parts (except for props like his hat).

Do enjoy, everyone!  Star Wars-related stuff coming soon, I promise...  :o

Fantastic changes to the Baron. He looks alot better now and closer to the reference. I always thought that Bail looked more like Dracula than the Baron but this will defiantely do. Unless you want to use that new Han Solo figure and paint a gote on it. That might be as close as you can get.

Very cool set of figures for Wodehouse. I've never heard of this before. I guess its about these two going on adventures right? Is it a sci-fi thing like Dr.Who? By the way, when are you going to make the Doctor?

Thanks for posting, Phruby and Ennis, and for bearing with me on my obscure & esoteric source material!

Ennis, I agree, it is nice to take a break from SW from  time to time.  Besides, it's a fun challenge to try to use SW fodder to make completely non-SW characters!  It always surprises me how much potential there is in that direction.

Phruby, I'd be glad to make The Doctor if I'd ever seen any Dr. Who!  I've been meaning to, bt haven't had much time.  Could you or anyone else perhaps shoot a few reference pictures my way?

Here's the premise behind the Jeeves and Wooster stories, in case anyone is wondering.  They're not sci-fi at all, but they are completely escapist in their own way.  Bertie Wooster is an independently wealthy young dandy, very good natured & has lots of friends, but not very smart.  He's always getting into sticky situations (being engaged to the wrong girl, having any number of silly tasks to perform for his aunts or friends), and every time his rear is saved by the intelligence and cunning of his valet, Jeeves.  P.G. Wodehouse wrote the stories between the 1900s and the 1970s, but they all take place in the Jazz Age, and Bertie is perpetually about 28 years old.  They're just about the funniest things written in English, &  highly recommend them to all!

Thanks again, guys!

That queen is beautiful Esther great job. I cant beleive you hand sew this stuff idts amazing.

The 10 th doctor??? I thought they only regenerated 8 times. What the hell???
As forthe Dr.'s regenerations, I think I remember reading on Wikipedia that it's 12 times.  Can any Who fans out there corroborate this?

Timelords get 12 lives, but it will be interesting to see if they change that with this current series as The Doctor is the last Timelord (maybe he gets all of the unused lives of the now dead Timelords?)....

Also... great new customs Finds! The Snivvian female looks very good, almost production :)

I've been looking forward to see what you were going to do with your version since you first mentioned it a couple weeks back.

I am impressed!!!  Great job on making soft goods work for this figure.  As proficient as you are at all of your figures using cloth, this one really works well.

Now you make me want to go back and try something like this myself.

Keep up the good work Findswoman!

wow, Findswoman, another pair of great customs!

That Wiorkettle is one damn strange looking character!  Who designed that card?  Great execution of the character, but it does look a bit goofy.  :)

and the Sheltay Retrac is EXCELLENT!  Another stellar job with the soft goods!  Really, really great!

My only small complaint is still my strong dislike of most POTF2 Leia heads, especially those obnoxious-looking celebration ones.  but that's hardly your fault.  The craftsman ship is really first rate, a wonderful job all around.  My only suggestion would be the same one I gave to johnboy - a pilot Padme head instead of the POTF2.  but I certainly am aware that it's not always feasible to find whatever parts you want whenever you want them.

Great update finds....

I though Wiorkettle was fan-fic until I saw the reference.  Looks top notch!  A bizaare creature but matched up great.  I may tryin to replicate the way you got the soft goods to work on that body.  It looks great.

Sheltay is a great looking figure.  You always do such great work with the softgoods.  You make us amateurs look like butchers when play with cloth :)

Keep it up!

I really like Sheltay Retrac. The fabric dress is fantastic. Very well cut and sown together. Do you really sew the dresses for this scale figure or do you glue them together and hide all the seams? How do you but together a dress like this?

Just to echo what i said at FFurg.

Great job on both Finds.
I really like the Snivvian . THis is the first Female version i've seen.
Bail's Aid is nicely done too.

Thanks so much for the kind words, Spectre, Johnboy, Quazar, Phruby, Brent, and Glassman!

Quazar, yes, I know those POTF2 Leia heads are suboptimal.  I just didn't have enough spare Padmé heads around at the time.  I did a tiny bit of repainting on the eyes to try to make it just a touch different.  It ended up looking a lot like a friend of mine from elementary school!  :)

BrentS, Glassman, and Spectre, glad that Wiorkettle is to your liking!  She sure is a funny looking one, isn't she?  Flowing light blue dress and cape... topped with that head!  But that's precisely why I wanted to make her, because that's the kind of custom I like to make -- beautiful, but still outlandish in that Star Wars kind of way.

Phruby, I do sew all the outfits at this scale.  Once in a while I'll use glue to attach small accents or that sort of thing (also I use self-adhesive Velcro, which saves work), but the actual outfit is indeed stitched together with needle & thread.  I use a pattern to cut out fabric pieces at the right size, slightly adjusting the dimnsions as necessary so it fits the figure.  Then I pin the pieces together in the places I'm going to sew, and then I sew them up (on the wrong side of the fabric, of course).  At this scale it's not practicable to sew hems, so I protect the edge of the fabric with a very thin line of clear nail polish to prevent fraying.

For both Sheltay and Wiorkettle, the cloth parts are the skirt and cape; the bodices are part of the figure.  You can use a pretty similar pattern for skirts and capes, though capes are usually bigger (at least these ones are).  I have such a pattern posted in PDF format on here, on FFURG (http://www.ffurg.com/accessories/sewing.htm) -- the cape/skirt is the one on the lower left side of the page.

Thanks again, all, and very happy customizing!  :)

Findswoman, this is a great update.

Sheltay Retrac - Really a pretty figure.  Could pass for a Leia too, so if you ever do a photonovel in the OT era maybe you could use that for a Leia scene also.  Really a great figure, you are very good with the soft good and making female figures expecially.

Wiorkettle - I tried making a version of him a while back, but it didn't turn out too good.  Yours looks great.  What a funny looking alien.  Good soft goods again, and it's nice to see some aliens on Bespin other than just Ugnaughts.

 :)

Oh my gosh, Chewie, I totally missed this response of yours from gosh knows how long ago!  Thanks so much for your kind words -- I respect your work a whole lot, so it's always a great honor to hear from you.   Glad you like the two gals!  (Yes, Wiorkettle is a gal too -- note the secondary sex characteristics. :) )

Gand apologizes profoundly for shamelessly bumping her own thread when she doesn't have anything new to offer.  But she will soon, she promises -- something 12", in fact.  So do keep watching this space... 8)

Just a very small update -- I gave my 12" Padmé Amidala (arena outfit) a new (& hopefully better) body.  Check her out here:

http://www.findswoman.net/12inch/PadmePage.html

She had been on the slightly scrawny LOTR Arwen body, but I changed her to one of the new 12" female bodies from http://www.triadtoys.com, which not only had better proportions with the head, but also gave the clothes a more flattering fit.

I'll post more photos soon, including of the scratches I painted on her back, as soon as I fix her head (it's been having trouble staying on the neckpost of the new body).  Meanwhile, enjoy!  :)

i have to be honest and say that the hair on the padme is very strange and looks nothing like the real hair, but thats okay, because your work on the body looks very nice, and thats the main focus of the custom, so nice work, and keep it up! it must be really hard working on the 12" scale but youre really pulling it off.  8)  :)

Robo-Quack, thanks for your comments.  Yes, you are right about the hair -- it is far from movie-accurate.  That's because this doll uses the head from the Beautiful Braids Padmé doll, which has the hair bun in a somewhat different place.  Even if it didn't match,  I still liked it far better than the cheapo plastic hairdo that came on the Hasbro doll.  If I had more skills in this direction, then maybe I'd be able to achieve the proper look!  But that may not happen for a while...  :o

Thanks again,

YAY!! Finally another update to the Findswoman collection. The updates have been few and far between as of late. :(

Movie accurate or not I still think it loks awesome. If this would have been on the shelf, that fig probably wouldn't have rotted. ;D

I wish they would have had those Triad Toys bodies when I was still collecting 12 in figs. I probably would have gone broke trying to get them. All we had was that miserable G.I.Jane body. ( Shudder!)

My favorite is still the purple gown Padme. That is noe beautiful figure.

You really need to update more often. ;D

Thanks, Ennis!  Glad you enjoy!  Those Triad S1 bodies ARE nice -- and are very reasonable, too, at $12.99.

Yes, I know it's been a while since I have updated here.  It's because (a) I've been quite busy preparing to go to Germany next week and (b) I've recently been doing mostly 12" stuff, some of it non-SW (which doesn't mean that I've given up 3.75" stuff).

I'll do my best to post at least 1 or 2 more things before I leave for Germany, but part of it depends on (a) how quickly I receive some supplies I need and (b) how much time I have outside of preparations, etc. to work on it.  But I will do my best.

Thanks again!

Title: Re: The Findswoman's Customs: 5/29: Kitbashed Imperials and a Chick in Green
Post by: findswoman on May 30, 2007, 01:23 AM
Some new customs at last!  Or, well, kitbashes, anyway.  Lately I've been throwing together some random Imperials (& others) for some upcoming photocomicking, and though these are really nothing special at all & have plenty of things wrong with them, I thought I'd share:

The middle three guys are built on the ROTS Governor Tarkin body; in fact, the one second from right is simply Tarkin with a hair repaint.  The guy on the far left is on a General Veers body and has a Spy Kids Donnagon head; I don't remember which body that is that the far right (Luke-headed) guy has, but the big black gloves were not originally part of it.

I also decided to retool my ROTS Emperor (the really early one, in black) with some S-O-F-T G-O-O-D-S and a twist tie in the hem for that windblown look.  I can't take credit for the look myself, since I just followed a really cool set of instructions originally posted on I forget which forum by I forget whom.   If anyone knows, please let me know so I can give proper credit where it's due.

Now for something completely different... Just for kicks and thrills, and to use in the background of upcoming photocomics, I threw together the following Chick in a Really Obnoxious Green Dress.  Now, I do not frequently emply the term "chick" in referring to members of my own sex, but this time I think the word actually fits.  Yes, I know she has a cartoonish goofy grin.  Yes, I know the skin color of her face doesn't match that of her body.  It's all right, because at the present she's just eye candy.  :)

And a final, rather goofy group shot of sorts.  Everybody conga!

Not much, I know, and nothing at all special, but I hope y'all enjoy all the same!

I love the soft goods emporer. He looks so much better that way. The 'chick' reminds me of those Polly Pocket-like Leia and Padme figures that Disney is going to be releasing soon at the parks. Funny bunny hop line you got there on the Imperials. You just need to shave down that Luke neck.

It was great to finally meet you and your husband at C4.  :D

Why thank yew, Phruby!  Glad they're to your liking.  And I too am very happy that I finally got to meet you (and your boychik!) at the Con this past weekend.  :)

Yeah, that Luke neck... I only noticed that after all the photos were taken.  Usually it stays down all right, but I guess in the course of posing and turning the guys' heads it crept up a little.  Mea maxima culpa.

I was indeed going for the "Polly Pocket" look with the Chick in Green.  I figured, heck, I'd never use that WOW Action Girls head on any serious SW character with an actual name.  The interesting thing is, actual Polly Pocket figures are ALMOST to scale with SW figures (I have one dancing with a clone in one of my Clone Troopers' Ball pictures), and their furniture and some accessories are often quite compatible.

Thanks again! :)

Well, I fixed the Luke-headed fellow -- just shoved the head further down!  So here's how he looks now.

Perhaps it's still a little long -- but heck, he's just eye candy for the background, so it's no biggie.  Hope you enjoy all the same!

On a completely different note... I have just finished posting on my website some of the customs that I sent in to the Ultimate Group Project (UGP) and which appeared in the UGP diorama at Celebration IV.

Here (http://www.findswoman.net/4inch/UGPCustoms.html), first of all, are some general group photos of the gals I sent in.

And the little Gand Findswoman in gold gets her own page (http://www.findswoman.net/4inch/UGPTelfien.html).

Why thanks so much!  But we couldn't have asked for a better market stall for her to run -- that stall of yours was truly one of my favorite pieces of furniture in the diorama!  Loved all the pretty baubles 'n' beads!

It's mostly a Bespin Escape Leia, since that one's nice and small, but I replaced Leia's legs (which are perennially fixed in a sort of running position) with the legs from Vintage "4-LOM."  I also replaced Leia's 5-fingered Human hands with the three-fingered ones from Djas Puhr.

Thanks again!  :)

Yes, I know Hasbro says they're eventually going to make one to round oout the bounty hunters, but what can I say?  I was impatient.  :D

I made this after Beedo suggested that the VTSC Pilot Luke would be a good base, and that is indeed what I used, though I accidentally ruined one of the Luke arms & had to replace them with VTSC Greedo ones instead.
