Title: Vintage Kenner/LJN Indy Toys
Post by: Matt on October 23, 2007, 01:49 PM
Anyone into the vintage Indy line at all?

I recently dug out the stuff I had when I was a kid.  Most of the figures, and the Well of the Souls playset (which is missing nearly everything).  I think I had everything else except for the Map Room playset and the horse, but all that stuff's long gone, unfortunately.

Anyway, it's made me think about going back and picking up some stuff, before the prices jump next year (assuming they will).  It's a relatively small line, which is good, but some of those carded figs are awfully expensive, which is not so good.

I have all of the vintage Indy figures (could use a new Indy himself though, damn broken thumb). I have the horse and one of the playsets. Now that this has come up i am going to dig the stuff out. I want a new indy and should get the rest of the playsets.

I am.  I started picking them up slowly about a month or two ago and I fear I started too late.  There's a buyer out there who is pretty obviously speculating as he's been spending like crazy and buying up many of the same figure repeatedly.

Carded stuff in good shape is already a little kooky and the loose stuff wasn't much better this week.  I'm hoping this weekend was just the usual assortment of stupid ebay buyers that crop up every so often.

-Loose ROTLA Indy complete sold for over $170, usually goes for $50-80 complete
- Boxed Well of Souls playset with loose contents (i.e. not sealed in baggies) sold for opening bid of $199. The previous week saw a nearly identical (box had a bit more wear) set go for about $65 which I thought was high as well.

So the loonieness is already in full swing but hopefully won't stay there.

I'm close to finishing, relatively speaking:

From ROTLA I need:
Marion
Indy
Sallah
Belloq's map (I have the figure)
Indy's horse - I'm not really inclined to pick it up given the prices it usually fetches

From ToD I need:
Mola Ram

Playsets I need:
Well of Souls
Streets of Cairo

I'm really not even that concerned about the playsets really only wanting the Ark from the WoS and the figures from SoC.

Don't even start on carded stuff.  Aside from Toht and the Cairo Swordsman they're already climbing and of course the AFA stuff is in the mix as well ::)

Are there any loose Indys out there that still have both their thumbs?  I don't think so.

I've got a complete set of Indy figs, including the Truck.  I found it in 1986 on clearance at a place called Play King in New Jersey.  It was like 7.00.  They had a wall of them.  If I had only bought 10 of them...

Anyone into the vintage Indy line at all?

Just the stuff I had as a kid - and it's all in very "played with" condition:

- Indy (broken thumb, missing gun)
- Cairo Swordsman (missing sword)
- Mail-Away Belloq (missing robe)
- Toht (missing pistol)
- Monkey (no sign of Marion)
- Map Room (just have the Map Floor, Indy, and Staff of Ra)

And the Well of Souls (missing torches and some snakes):

And, one thing I never noticed before until I dug it out tonight - friggin' R2 and 3PO are RIGHT THERE on the Ark Cover!   :o

I know, I know, it's probably old news, so just humor me.  I always knew they were easter eggs in the movie, but I never noticed they were on the toy version until today (after almost 25 years of ownership).

I don't think I'll go chasing any of the vintage stuff, but I will probably use the vintage playset stuff as a nice backdrop if (when  ::)) I buy any of the new stuff...

Are there any loose Indys out there that still have both their thumbs?  I don't think so.

Not mine...  :-\

That is fantastic.  I've only got the base, the big piece of the wall, the mummy, and (oh yeah) just the bottom of the Ark, no lid, which absolutely drives me bat-**** crazy.  Everything else is long-gone.  Love that tidbit on the Ark Cover.  Don't think I ever knew that before, either.

I've got all the figures except the Marions (both of which I believe I had at one point), Toht (think I had him, too), and Ceremonial Belloq.  All are missing their accessories, and Monkey Man is missing his cool-ass robe.

And I've got the canopy for the truck.  Where's the truck itself?  I faintly recall bashing the **** out of it (and probably everything else I'm missing along with it) several years later, when I became too cool to play with toys anymore.  (I swear, I could bash the **** out of myself for doing that, nowadays.)

Anyway, cool stuff, Jeff.

I have a couple of the figures, loose, banged up shape mostly without accessories, and I have them actually as custom fodder of all things.  My originals are all boxed away somewhere, mixed with GI Joes, and very few accessories (may a torch here or there, a snake, etc.).

I didn't have the monkey man set as a kid, just the maproom, WOS, and the truck.  Had all the figures but Marion as she was unimportant to the action.  Had a couple indies, but like all of you they are now thumbless and I lost the pistols any figure had on the ride home generally.

Somewhere out there is an '84 Caravelle Wagon with a ton of GI Joe, Star Wars, and Indiana JOnes accessories in the seats in the back.

Do you still have the VIN numbers anywhere? :-X

And what I was saying earlier about prices getting goofy... (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=110182554320&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=001).  Well, yeah.   :'(

Jeff, if you want to part with that monkey, lmk. ;)  And I'm betting most people didn't know about the droids on the Ark cover.  Hell, you probably just screwed my search for the WoS playset by igniting the Star Wars geeks.   >:( ;)

I have to admit, though, that I'd rather it be a mailaway piece that would come in an outer box with an inner "wood crate."  Top men would be sending that out of course. :)

Now that is an incredible idea.

So i dug out all my Indy stuff and was very surprised with what i found. Closer to a complete collection than i thought.

I think that because the Raiders figures sold poorly, that Kenner didn't really want Temple of Doom.  However, if the Kenner figures had hit when Raiders did, May 1981, instead of Sept 1982 (If I rememeber well...) they would have sold a lot better!

Not sure if you're interested in acquiring vintage Indy stuff anymore, but sometimes The Earth Toy Mall (http://www.theearthtoymall.com/index.html) gets in vintage Indy toys at pretty good prices (their Star Wars stuff is fairly priced, so I assume the Indy products are too when they do get it in).

THIS (http://www.theearthtoymall.com/weofsoplinse.html) looks like a fair price, or at least it was when they had one in stock.

I finally got around to taking a pick of the well of souls set i picked up. The box is in pretty good condition but the parts are all still sealed which i couldnt resist.

As for the new info. The price is a bit high. I think its great we are getting playsets and deluxe figures. A horse would make sense but if they are giving us a well of souls playset i think the ark would be inlcuded there.

Who's to say Chewie - there's a lot of hype now because of the movies so personally, I don't think now is the right time to start collecting vintage Indy.

You could be right... and really, 2008 would be the time to SELL Indy stuffy probably; for those considering parting with their stuff.

I think that might be a fair price though... I'm sure it will be gone after Christmas, but if it's still available, I'm probably going to order it.

The Map Room doesn't typically top $100.  Yet.  Maybe if that's a sealed box with sealed baggies inside (duh) then it's ok for a price.  It would fetch a premium though as the condition is very good based on those pictures.

Who's to say Chewie - there's a lot of hype now because of the movies so personally, I don't think now is the right time to start collecting vintage Indy.

Agreed.  The prices really started to climb in September and there are currently a couple of speculators on ebay snapping up stuff at prices higher than they were three months ago presumably with the expectation of selling them next year when the movie hits.  Auctions for MISB stuff go a little wacky.  You can still occasionally luck into bargains though.

I just finished out my loose, vintage Indy collection (I do have a few boxes) about two weeks ago with a loose version of the Streets of Cairo.

Title: LJN Indiana Jones Figures
Post by: evenflow on December 17, 2007, 06:47 PM
I think these figures are mixed in with the Kenner figures but i figured they should have their own thread. Anyway I finally picked up a Mola Ram on card with a severe yellow bubble. It does have the white skull variant though. Not sure which is more rare, but that is the one i got.

I still need to get the Indy. Once i get him i will consider myself officially complete with regards to the vintage figures.

Talk about sucking!!

While I was getting out my complete vintage Indy collection and setting it up in a dispaly cabinet, I tried to push the Staff of Ra staff into the hand on Map Room Indy.  I forgot that he also had the hard plastic whipping action hand and broke the thumb!  Now alll of my Indy figs are tumbless, except thye one in the Nazi Uniform.

In my ebaying of vintage Indy stuff over the past year, I rather lucked into something fairly nice.

I bought a large lot of figures and the Well of Souls playset from a fellow to fill a pretty substantial hole in my collection, though some of the stuff included were duplicates.  I didn't have the Well of Souls playset but wanted the Ark at the very least and getting the rest of the set wasn't so bad, as I already had the Streets of Cairo and Map Room playsets for the figures included in them (really just trying to get the loose figure collection done).  So in addition to the complete Well of Souls playset there were four figures: Marion, Indy, Toht and the Cairo Swordsman.  There was also an extra baggy of snakes/torches/etc. for the playset, so a nice overall package.

When the item arrived (it made its usual stop at chuckles' place along the way) there was something extra in the package that wasn't in the picture for the auction when I bought it.  There was also no mention of the extra either in the auction description or in communication with the seller.  I'm guessing he just had it around and didn't think much of it.  I talked with DSJ about it and we managed to come to the conclusion that it's the box for the JC Penney four pack. :o  The figures weren't complete as Marion was missing her stand (still not sure if the four pack version had a stand) and Indy was missing his gun as well.

Anyway, if you're still interested after that, here's a couple of pics of the package that I finally got around to taking:

Front:

Side with proofs of purchase intact:

Pretty nifty addition to the collection anyway. :)

Title: Vintage Kenner Playsets
Post by: Pete_Fett on May 4, 2008, 10:53 PM
I decided to dig out my vintage Kenner Raiders toys today.

I really wasn't interested in the figures, I was really looking for the old Kenner playsets. I always liked the Well of Souls and Map Room sets when I was a kid, so I wanted to have them to display with my new Hasbro figures.

I have to say, even though the paint apps on these sets could be better, I think it's a real shame that Hasbro didn't consider re-releasing the Well of Souls set as part of the new line - 'cause this playset still holds up pretty well and if I didn't already have it, I think I would definitely be looking to pick one up on eBay.

In case you're not familiar with the Kenner Well of Souls playset, you can check out a pretty nice photo gallery of it, courtesy of CoolToyReview.com (http://www.cooltoyreview.com/Kenner_IJ_WellofSouls.asp).

The next set that I wanted to take a look at again was the Map Room playset. The map of Tanis could have totally been included with the Dessert Robe Disguise Indy figure (as opposed to the Ark) - it would have also been an opportunity for Hasbro to produce a nice looking Staff of Ra. The Ark of the Covenant could have instead been packed with a Ceremony Belloq figure and then a remake of the vintage Belloq figure could have been in the regular line (but I digress). So now I've basically taken that exact playset and replaced the Indy it came with, with the new Deluxe Indy w/Ark figure. Just like with the Well of Souls set, if I didn't already have this, I would definitely want to pick it up on eBay, here's a link to the photo gallery from CoolToyReview.com (http://www.cooltoyreview.com/Kenner_IJ_MapRoom.asp).

I also pulled out my mostly complete Cairo Streets set (I'm missing one of the baskets and some of the fruit). This set is the weakest of the three, but since I wanted to have something in a little scene with the Cairo streets figures, I figured this set is better than nothing. A better color and paint application on the cart itself would probably help the set a lot - I could see them re-releasing this set packed with a couple of those Cairo Henchman figures to help it sell better, but w/o the lure of getting some army builders, I can't really see the value in this set. Here's the link to the photo gallery from CoolToyReview.com (http://www.cooltoyreview.com/Kenner_IJ_StreetsofCairo.asp).

So what does everyone think? I think re-releasing the Well of Souls and Tanis Map Room sets in the new line should be a no-brainer for Hasbro. I think a modern paint application to both of these sets would be all they would need to bring them into sync with the new line. The Well of Souls set could easily fit into a box that is the same size as the Truck and Troop Car. Since they already released the Map Room Indy figure, they probably missed the boat with releasing the Tanis Map Room set as an accessory for a deluxe figure, perhaps they could release it with a Cairo version of Belloq, even though Belloq didn't actually go into the map room, perhaps they could pack it with Belloq, the correct length Staff of Ra with the real head-piece and a wrong height staff with poor recreation of the head-piece so you could re-create a scene that was described in the movie but took place off-camera.

I think re-releasing the Well of Souls and Tanis Map Room sets in the new line should be a no-brainer for Hasbro.

Unfortunately, a re-release of the Kenner sets can't happen.  From the Hasbro Q&A sessions:

[snip]...If the playsets and vehicles get an update, will they utilize the molds from the vintage toys like many of the current Star Wars vehicles or would they be all new sculpts?  (YF, 08/17/07) (http://cgi.denpetersen.com/YAK1/viewtopic.php?p=28928#28928)

[snip]...One thing that is known is that NONE of the original Indy tools exist anymore, so we will not be going back to the vintage tools.

Hasbro confirmed this at Toy Fair.  None of the Kenner tools/molds for Indy exist, so anything that they do in this new line will have to be new...

Thanks Jeff - sorry if this has already been discussed.

That is a real shame that those molds don't exist anymore. No wonder they just didn't re-release the Tanis Map Room set in the Deluxe Line.

Not to sound like I'm bragging, but now I REALLY am glad I've kept these three sets all these years.

I'd love to just have the maproom floor in decent shape, and the Well of Souls complete without the little things (torches, snakes, etc.) for display purposes.  Streets of Cairo would be nice too just for "set pieces" to display with Marion, the Arab thug, and Swordsman too...  Those things are long gone from my collection though I'm afraid.  I think GI Joe destroyed and lost most of the pieces to them over the years.

The Maproom though, that would be nice to go with the Maproom Indy.  :-\

I have considered time and time again to go after a carded Indiana Jones figure but always back away.  I think because I would then want to go after EVERY Kenner item.  I know Indy would lead to Marion would lead to Sallah would lead to Belloq would lead to....you get the idea.  Then it would poor over in the playsets, etc.
