Here is the first half of page one of my comic in progress. It's just layout pencil on tracing paper. The lettering will be given more attention with the finals. Thought the roughs turned out pretty nice. I'll post the first half in this reply and then do another after with the second half. Let me know what you think...

The Wookiee Arcade / Space Opera
« on: February 22, 2004, 07:07 PM »
Did anyone ever play Space Opera back in the day? It was an RPG that tied in all realms of the space genre (Star Trek, Star Wars...). It was released in 1980 by Paladin Press and didn't make it too far despite it being a damn good game.

I was in a really cool used bookstore/collectibles shop recently and found it in the box in mint condition (all books and gaming sheets included). Bought it for $10. The memories are good enough for me. The biggest hurdle of the game was character generation. So many rolls and facets to complete before you could even start up a good game. The math involved could be a bit trying at times too. It was definitely not mainstreamed. Very complex, but once you got to the actual roleplaying, it was a total kick in the butt.

Hope I can find a few old buddies to revive some Space Opera gaming.

I had an Ursoid Battle Starship Commander named Ruse Caliban. I couldn't roll bad with this character. My stat rolls were uncanny and I had a high Psionics to begin. I played a game where Ruse went out in search of an alien species that was threatening innocent planetary settlers. I came upon one and managed to take it out. They had a poisen that fetched a high price, so I decided to find out why. I cut out the poisen sac and chugged it to try and rally some cowardly soldiers.

The GM said in order to survive, I needed to roll a 1, then a 2 & then a 3 in that order on a 10 sided die. I freaking made the saving throws (the odds are pretty insane) and everybody was stunned. Then a buddy playing with me went and did the same and he freaking made the saves! The GM was in shock.

What the poisen did was basically take us into the realm of Superior species. It got to be that we had to retire them due to the extreme nature of their power. Nothing was a challenge. We'd walk in a room and any battle that was to take place was over before it started.

Don't ask why the GM would've made such an elixir or reward, but to make the saving throws we did deserved that kind of payoff.

Anyway, sorry to reminisce so. I just thought I'd share and see if anyone else ever dabbled in it.

Thanks Brad. While I like to think I know a lot about art as an educator and practicing (but not for an income) artist, I am still flawed. The great thing about being an artist is that it is something that can be improved upon and one can never know enough.

I recently read that the art critic for Time magazine was in a horrible accident and while recovering he had a dream. The dream was about a Goya painting (that does not exist) and he was somehow in it. This motivated him to delve into Goya as a man and an artist and write an extremely profound book about him. I guess what I'm saying is sometimes what we pass by or take for granted can become something very important and personal to us down the road. Art is a human experience that is always changing and evolving. This art critic never really gave Goya's work the time of day. Then a dream led him to explore Goya's work and it became a journey that was both educational and personal.

I find I suck at many things. But those are the things that I try to work on as much as possible. Then I hope that by practicing and working at them, I won't suck so much. I quit drawing regularly for about 7 years. In that period, I sculpted and if I drew, it was as a teaching device for my students. When I wanted to start drawing seriously again, I expected I'd start where I left off. I sucked! I couldn't draw anything the way I saw it in my mind. I struggled and it took a long time to draw anything well. So I turned to drawing from life and anatomy. It got me grounded and I became much better quickly.

I aspire to do great things with my art, but life interferes a lot. I would post more of my comic art, but the subject matter is controversial and not protected properly yet. Once I get things a little more squared away and the idea becomes a reality, then I'll post more.

I did a Star Wars image a year or so ago. I was in a Jack Kirby tribute mood. This is just a scanned pencil sketch. The foreground hand is Simpsonish and I curse myself for not working it a bit more. Oh well, it's just a sketch.

I do not have anything worthy of showing that relates to Star Wars, but thought I'd share a quick sample of a work in progress. This is a rough panel I whipped out to practice inking with a brush. I have had a really frustrating time improving, but it may have had to do with the brush I was using. Finally shelled out the $23 for a Windsor and Newton series 700 #2 brush. Amazing what a consistant and definite point a Kolinsky sable brush will give an inker. All ink work here is done with a brush and this is enlarged about 50% from the original. The background is zipatone (an almost extinct material). It has an adhesive backing and you place it and x-acto it to fit. It's a lost art form and I can rarely find it anywhere other than Japanese wholesale Manga supply sites. This is a panel for a comic in the works. I will post more soon. The last page I was begining to ink is no longer... I was about 65% done with the brushwork and going to move in with a little croquill and zipatone when I dropped the brush. Not sure how or why, but a brush full of ink dropping on a finely inked page (that had about 4 hours of work in it) doesn't help the quality much. Brushing is challenging, but really rewarding when it comes together and one keeps the brush in their hand... This is a much more raw approach than what the look of the actual comic will have. I think that I may delve into it a little for some of the darker and more raw panels. I do much better when I don't think and just do it. I tend to muck it up if I concentrate too hard. Ability vs. intent. When I just do it, it is free and confident. Try too hard and I'm grinding to hold it together and be perfect and I fall apart. Practice, practice...

Fan Art / Re: Reservoir Dogs (two pieces)
« on: February 20, 2004, 05:19 PM »
These are both done well Brad! Your willingness to experiment and play with different media will make you more well-rounded and adept with drawing materials & paper. I actually like how the top drawing looks. Don't ever discount the importance of texture. It can add a dramatic element to your art and add to the feel of the photo. Res Dogs is definitely a rough movie so the texture complements the subject matter.

Your value awareness and shading are improving. Your bottom drawing looks much like an Alex Ross pencil study. It looks more like you are painting with the pencil than drawing (which is cool). Smoothing and smudging and blending are great techniques to master. I might suggest you photo copy this and experiment with some harsher pen & ink hatching/cross-hatching on top of the smooth base art. Combining these could be lethal!

I am proud of you. You have really become dedicated to your creative ability and are beginning to realize how much you can grow if you keep doing it often. Van Gogh started when he was 27 years old. It took him 2 years of hardcore practice before he became a master of art. It's never too late to start if you have the time and you practice a lot. All things require a decent amount of practice if one wants to master it and grow beyond and into their own style. It really shows that you are practicing and making increible strides.

My only constructive criticism is to work on likeness. The drawings are well done, but they could look a bit more like who they are. But it stands on it's own and had I not known it was a montage of Res Dogs characters, I would've sadi it looks like you were inspired by Res Dogs or agents from the Matrix.

Nice Brad. I need to start putting some of my stuff up to back up all this talk and sage advice. Hope to do it soon.

BTW, BD is off the shelf. I'll talk to you soon about it.

Leia?
Amidala? and call her Ami?
R2?

I'm leaving it up to my wife and she asks me and I have not been too impressed yet. We like boys names for girls, so Chuck or Dave or Hank are up there...

No clue yet, but will keep all posted. Thanks for the props!

Other Collectibles / Re: Star Wars Clix
« on: February 8, 2004, 07:49 PM »
Yeah, I do...

But it's probably going to be miniatures for a new RPG and for use congruently with existing RPGs. Pretty sure the 'clix' part will be left out. A little bummed as it looks like Wizkids/WOTC is beginning to get the hang of producing them. The new DC Clix are amazing! The detail in the sculpts and the painting are much higher on the quality scale than any 'Clix' release I have seen. Saw a unique batman with detachable wings and it is the largest clix figure yet and one of the most impressive. The dang thing takes up 2 slots in a 4-pack booster!

I'll keep looking into it and report what I find.

Feedback / Re: wai's feedback
« on: February 2, 2004, 04:14 PM »
Have not completed a trade with Wai yet. He still needs to decide what he wants from me. Wai sent 3 nice figures to me in good faith and to honor his promise of sending first.

He still has to decide what he wants from me as I realized at the last moment I did not have a figure that he requested. This transaction will be fulfilled soon.

I just wanted to write and say that Wai is worth trading with and he honors his word. The figures arrived in great condition and in a timely manner. Wai hooked me up and I recommend you give him a try.

She's due in July and we are past the hard part. We lost a pregnancy prior to this, so it was pretty tough for the first trimester. But we just had the ultrasound and we are having another healthy baby girl! I am relieved and happy. Congrats to you too and is it your first or are you a vet like me?

I think the result of your equation is more apt. We'll get there... when the prices on these things are off the charts...

Still would look nice with all my red carded stuff. It would be good, if true, that Kenner destroyed the molds. This is as close as I can probably get to carded vintage for a while (teacher + pregnant wife + daughter = vintage carded Star Wars collection no longer a priority... :'(

By the way, that's my first and last smilie...

I just like Retro anything. Better to have the authentic stuff, but my budget won't stretch that far and no one seems interested in trading their vintage carded figures for mass quantities of modern stuff.

I wonder if there are any vintage molds floating around out there... I would assume with all the prototypes that keep popping up, the possibility exists.

Does anyone have the 4-Pack of rereleased vintage figures they put out during the Power of the Force (II) era? I am just curious about how the figures look and what they did to change them so they would be obviously more modern. I assume the dates are different, but I am interested in other changes people may have noticed and what those who have this set think of it overall.

Damn!!!

Many Faces... What a loser I am!

Nice call on the Maskatron and much better name anyway!

The pics are all great!

What was that Sci-Fi show... Space 1999 or something?

That and Battle Star Galactica were my Star Wars hook ups...

The Johnny West Stuff was great too because of the accessories. Geronimo was the best!!!

Big Jim rocked too! Forgot all about him.
