Title: Defender Wishlists 2007 Discussion
Post by: Scott on January 22, 2007, 11:23 PM
I've been trying to figure out what to do with the Wishlists this year...

Since we don't have the whole year announced yet, hopefully we'll know more after Toy Fair, it may be dumb to start soon.  But then again, I usually like to give a good 2-3 weeks for each movie.

Also, if you notice on the main list only 1 figure from Episode I, 0 from Episode II, V or VI have been announced officially yet (although there are some strong rumors)

Do we make the new Wishes the same as the old wishes?  Do we take the confirmed figures off the list, bump them up and vote for the spots left.  ie Since there are 5 ROTS figures confirmed, we vote for 5 new figures instead of 10 and they go behind the first 5.

I'll also add EU this year...even though its not real Star Wars :-X

I always love these topics, OCB.  Here's my two cents:

-Wait until after Toy Fair.  We're bound to see a few things that may be on the previous year's list, and waiting until after that will eliminate the need for some people to go back and edit their own lists.

-In the initial post for each movie, post the winners of the previous poll along with what has been produced and what has not.

-Post a link in the initial post to the previous year's poll so that people can easily go back to the old thread and copy their list if they haven't changed their minds about their choices.  But definitely give people the option of changing their minds from last year.  Give them the full ten.

-A Clone Wars specific poll might be interesting in addition to an EU poll.

I think we should do it like before, a list from each film.  I think the link back to the previous lists like Nicklab suggested would be great, also.

Yeah I do that each year so that's not a problem.

I agree with Nicklab. I enjoy doing these things and it's nice to see what has been done or what others want.

I know that we usually do the top 10 from each movie (plus EU), but I even enjoyed the "Who's Left..." versions as well. Maybe we could do scene specific never-been-done polls as well like with Jabba's Palace, Cantina. This could open up more fun in the meantime with Who's Left from DS I, DS II, Prequel Senate, Separatists, Outlander Club, Bespin, etc.

So maybe we could do the movie top 10s after Toyfair and do some scene specifics to fill in the time.

My list is probably going to be really annoying given that all the figures are coming from the same thing, more or less...

01.  SA Obi-Wan Kenobi in Clone Armor (CW Volume I)
02.  SA Clone Scuba Trooper (CW Volume I)
03.  SA ARC Trooper-Red Version (CW Volume I)
04.  SA ARC Trooper-Yellow Version (CW Adventures Comics)
05.  SA Captain Fordo-Battle of Coruscant (CW Volume II)
06.  SA Saesee Tiin in Space Armor (CW Volume II)
07.  SA Asajj Ventress (CW Volume I)
08.  SA Obi-Wan Kenobi in Clone Armor (CW Volume II; not the same as above)
09.  IG Lancer Droid (CW Volume I)
10.  SA Whiphid Jedi (K'Khruuk? sp?) (CW Volume I)

I would argue that Clone Wars is not EU. Is there anyway we could get an actual Clone Wars top 10 list as well? That would make the EU list more true to expanded universe and still allow us to vote on Clone Wars figures we would like. Just a thought?  ;D

I really like the idea of a Clone Wars List and then a separate EU List... then I could include more KOTOR characters, and Dark Forces too.

Personally, I think anything beyond the movies is EU.  Just my 2 cents.  :)

If I didn't know that, do you think I would have picked some Clone Wars characters in my EU list?  ::)

Anyways, it's just almost it's own entity of EU and in terms of Hasbro's interests, it's probably bigger than the rest of the other EU stuff combined.

Scott and Jesse are right...  It's a nice thought to get a double EU vote, but Clone Wars is EU by LFL's definition of what is EU and what isn't.  So CW goes in with it I'm afraid.  I think Hasbro looks at it more favorable because it was more in the public eye than other EU forms due to it being on TV, and being so popular on TV, and being fairly recent...

I didn't vote for CW because it seems to be more on their radar, so I went with sources that I find more interesting and less likely to get the attention I think they deserve than CW will.  Everyone should vote for what they really want though, and if it's all from one source that's up to you entirely.  I wanted things that fit in with the films or complemented each other, so that's my logic in voting I think.

I consider the Clone Wars as EU without a doubt, just gets more attention from Hasbro.  Makes perfect business sense for them to capitalize on the interest fans and kids have of it.  I know there's a lot of stuff from the Clone Wars that I'd buy even though not much was on my list...

I do think Hasbro considers the Clone Wars to be its own entity though to a degree.  As we know they made a subline marketed directly with Clone Wars in mind... to me not really with it being EU to them.

With SAGA2, the EU characters that Hasbro considered to go with the Clone Wars were still labeled as Clone Wars, not EU -

But by the same token... EU characters that weren't in the Clone Wars were simply defined as "EU" -

Therefore... I can see the viewpoint of considering Clone Wars and EU different categories.

And just for the hell of it, Vader's Droid - which I consider EU, was labeled as ROTS -

Anyways, I don't really care what the hell they call them. I just want Hasbro to make figures that I like.   ;D

So would SOTE and Force Unleashed not be EU?  Or the 1998 figures which weren't marketed as EU?  Like I said, LFL has its "rule" on EU pretty entrenched and it covers CW and everything else not in the films...  I think a marketing strategy doesn't take CW out of the EU realm...  Hell they call CW figures EU in Q&A's and such so I think they just market them as Clone Wars because the CW series was much more in the eye of the public than the other EU...

SOTE was marketed the same way, as it was intended to be in the public spotlight on various levels and be a big hit...  It wasn't.  Force Unleashed is the same attempted marketing strategy, but it's still EU like the Clone Wars is/was when it was the multi-media blitz from Hasbro, that's all.

Post by: CHEWIE on April 17, 2007, 10:04 PM
I would think the 1998 figures would be considered to be marketed as EU by Hasbro since they say Expanded Universe on them.

When the 1996 SOTE stuff came out, I don't even know if the word Expanded Universe was really coined yet, but maybe it was.

I don't think it really matters though, it's just a word printed onto cardboard.   I'm just throwing examples out for the fun of it.  ;)

I think Scott's 3 reasons are indeed the "why's" on it, but it was a good question regardless, evenflow.  It got some conversation rolling anyway on something sort of new, especially new to the voting for Scott's wishlist feature(s).

About the EU figures (1998), I stand corrected on the print on the cardbacks, but again the "line" wasn't really a deviation from the basic line but rather shipped along with it...  It's the same as marketing a Revan figure as "EU" within the basic line... It gives the context to where it came from since there's not a "KOTOR" sub-line to slip him into and basically explain to the consumer where it's coming from...  Since the 1998 figures were a mix from various sources, I think the "EU" tag wasn't so much the marketing scheme on them as much as making it plain on the packaging that they're not from the films, without listing on 2 of them "Dark Forces", then two with, "Dark Empire", and so on...  It's lessening the confusion.

CW, SOTE...  They were whole single lines devoted to one EU source so they got the special treatment, was my point, but they're still EU...  And CW has been the source that really got the attention through its heavier exposure to a greater set of demographics than SOTE did, added to its critical acclaim/popularity as well.

I think a separate CW poll would be cool myself, but Scott's right that time is short, it would mean chopping things out of this wishlist, and it's still part of EU so it's splitting hairs really regardless of how Hasbro favors CW as a source over other sources.

I think my main reason why i do not consider it EU because Lucas has accepted the Clone Wars story as the events between Episodes II and III. It is part of the story.
Title: Re: Defender Wishlists 2007 Discussion
Post by: Jesse James on April 19, 2007, 07:50 PM
Everything's part of the story though...  Lucas accepts it all, one way or the other, as part of what LFL calls "the official continuity"...  But as something written by others, produced by others, etc., the CW is no different than a novel or comic book...  Lucas accepted SOTE as the events between ESB and ROTJ too but they're no more canon than a video game or comic book is...

This brings up an interesting topic though about the television series (live-action) as rumors say Lucas is writing that, no?

I think if he's 100% involved in things it takes a different turn then.  From what I understood on Lucas's involvement on CW though, he only gave them basically the opening scrawl of ROTS to base their story leading up to ROTS on...  And that's why Grievous in the toon and Grievous in the movie are really almost 2 separate and distinct characters in many ways.
Title: Re: Defender Wishlists 2007 Discussion
Post by: Scott on April 19, 2007, 08:13 PM
Classic case in point is the whole Boba Fett/Jaster Mareel bull**** that was official until Episode II came about.  Parts of CW were used in Episode III (the Grievous cough, the Chancellor Kidnap) but the thing was so full of Supernatural Force abilities that it was way out there as far as Movie Canon.  It all goes back to Sansweet said several years ago that the movies are the only official canon and everything else is EU.

Like Jesse said, there definitely is a secondary canon that is out there that tries to make itself fit with the movies...but everything outside of the movies is secondary (and that includes TV)  IMO

Post by: evenflow on April 19, 2007, 09:41 PM
I hear what you guys are saying, but i just feel this is more part of canon than other EU. I think the argument can go either way, both points valid. Fun to discuss anyway.  ;D

I didn't vote for any CW characters because eventually Hasbro will do a Clone Armor Obi,etc...
I mean they're going for every possible change with main characters now, we just got a wet head Obi in TAC. How far is a clone armor one is going to be, not far IMHO.The CW will probably get another sub-line next year too & I bet all the costume variations & chracters that were in the original will be in the new version.

Ok, back on topic. Why was EU before the PT? I thought it was originally scheduled for June.

Ok, back on topic. Why was EU before the PT? I thought it was originally scheduled for June.

Because the majority of the EU stuff 2-Packs and Wave 5 has been strongly rumored/confirmed and the PT stuff in especially AOTC has not totally been confirmed.  By shifting them we'll know what is in the AOTC Wave after C4 and be able to vote then ;)

I cant really butcher you guys too much for your votes as it is your opinions, but I really just cant believe how few votes there have been for Zam. I mean come on! This list is going to HASBRO. Do you really want them to see characters like Snowspeeder Luke at the top of the list and assume our expectations are THAT low? You remember the previous Zams? They turly sucked, and this is a MAIN CHARACTER that hasnt seen a new figure, not even a repack, for over four years. PLEASE GUYS, PLEASE support Zam. Once again, it doesnt even have to be your #1, just enough towards the top so that Hasbro can see her name and CONSIDER making her. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!  :'(

apparently nobody wants a new Zam. but even if Hasbro sees Zam a lot they will probably just repack the old one OR rehash it with the preview version to make it "NEW". look at the Tin Jango, everyone wanted a jango and they gave it too us, just not the way we want it.

Last time I checked, Zam was definitely not a main character. In fact she was pretty unimportant in the main scheme of things. LFL could've easily replaced her with, I don't know, just about any other assassin-bounty hunter type character. Maybe I'm just biased on account of AOTC is my least favorite SW film.

Okay, Reid, I guess youre right. Shes not a MAIN character. But she is important. Basically I guess my response to this is if Naboo Flight Crew can get a somewhat decent figure than Zam certainly should get a great one.

I agree on zam...  If I had to narrow that list down, she'd be one of the tops I think.  Two figures, and neither were very good, so Hasbro's still got a ways to go with that one I'm afraid.

I disagree on Zam...

I'd much rather get my first Yarna or my first Willrow over my third Zam.   :P

Just about all of my list of 25 was first-time figures and I'd much see those over a third version of Zam, whether we "need" it or not.
Title: Re: Defender Wishlists 2007 Discussion
Post by: Jesse James on July 16, 2007, 01:32 AM
To me, the lack of a decent first sculpt makes a resculpt equal to even new figures...  Of course though, my desire for any given figure outweighs resculpt/new or anything else, so obviously resculpts of certain army builders take precedence to me...  Zam over Wilrow?  hmmm...  I'd probably go with Wilrow first there.

Zam over Yarna though?  No doubt in my mind I'd rather have a new Zam Wessel than Yarna...  I just don't care about Yarna I guess.  There's a lot I'd vote for over her I think, in the world of resculpt or new.

But, I don't care about all the Padme's a lot of people are voting for too either...  Or Senators, or whatever.  I like those figures when I get them though, they're neat usually (well, sometimes), but they just don't tickle my pickle much I guess...  Kinda like the push for certain holographic figures, or spirit figures or something.  Neat when you get some of them, but I could also live without them in the line while other stuff just gets me revved up when I see it.  I suppose I'm one of the only guys to see an A-Wing Pilot and go nuts for it though, or to see Baron Fel and get giddy at the thought of the new set he's in.
Title: Re: Defender Wishlists 2007 Discussion
Post by: P-Siddy on July 16, 2007, 10:54 AM
I agree wanting new figures before resculpts, but if a resculpt must be done then they should be of major characters like Obi-Wan or Qui-Gon. As Reid posted, Zam wasn't a major character, maybe third-tier at best and she's had 2 figures done (yes, they're not the best, but still they are made). Padme is a major character and she has been slighted in her scene-specific attires (which is many... and I admit you can't have 50 different Padmes out in a year). Most Padme's don't even need major artic, just beautifully sculpted gowns. I guess I'm a big Padme fan.  ;D

But if I had the choice of SA Zam or Jango vs Willrow, Yarna or Woklings (and I'm not a huge Ewok fan), I'd go for the later ones.
