Title: 2017 Droid Factory Build-a-Protocol Droid Series
Post by: Jeff on December 22, 2016, 03:11 PM
Mystery 3.75" Protocol Droid Figure (http://yakfaceforums.com/main/2016/12/22/mystery-3-75-protocol-droid/) revealed at Yakface.

Hmmm...  if the rumors/theories pan out, this will be both exciting (to see new parts/droids added to the mix) and annoying (if there are first-time protocol droids to track down for big $$$).   :-\

Interesting rumor any way you look at it....

Caught this on social media myself and wow...  I love the hand too, which is kind of unique.

I don't see the interest in mixing/matching colors being as high with protocol droids, as it is with astromechs, but I can see wanting cmplete solid colored ones sure.

Comparing this to the two previous offerings of R-3PO  (Saga Gold (http://www.rebelscum.com/sw0402r3po.asp) & the Droid Factory 2-pack (http://www.rebelscum.com/tlcDF3.asp)), the paint apps look kind of weak.  The sculpt looks okay, though.  But I do get a little disappointed when we continue to revisit previously made droids instead of doing something new.  We've got multiple versions of a few protocol droids including C-3PO, R-3PO and K-3PO.  How about mixing it up?

There was E-3PO from TESB, although some argue that the different finishes for the U-3PO B-A-D may have already covered this.  And what about the gaggle of protocol droids from REVENGE OF THE SITH?  There were at least 3 x Threepio units and at least a couple of BD-3000 droids, too.

This is stirring again and I really would like an all white droid like is in that pic Nick posted...  Thinking about other colors, again I think the mix/match potential on Protocol Droids is limited.  That said, I think the solid color diversity would be a nice addition and maybe they'll make some cool colors.  I'd like a black 3PO unit, some RA heads maybe.  I can't see them going balls out with droid diversity but who knows I guess.

That early pic Yakface showed is pretty cool IMO...  maybe some are never gonna be happy but to me it's some SA droids.  I'm cool with that.

What is that skinny black droid in the back with the hood?

Behind the silver protocol droid and next to the red Bettybot?  It actually looks like a Senate Guard to me, complete with the rifle slung over his back.

I thought Jayson said they are 5POA?  But I'd love it if the are articulated like the previous BADs.  And I hope they are released by the end of July/August since I'll be down at the World!

A black protocol droid like 0-0-0 from the Marvel Darth Vader comic would be pretty awesome.

it looks like we have:

Not sure who the bug-eyed one (Zuckuss??) and flat-top are.

I'm going to have to make a list of droids to make!!

Yes, the heads are based on the C-3PO, Death Star Droid, CZ-3, and 4-LOM heads for sure.  That skinny flat-top one seems familiar, but I can't place it.  Don't know if it's obscure or a Disney creation. - I just remembered - it's a shop keeper droid from the Clone Wars cartoon.  Here is a pic of GL-916 (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/GL-916) from star wars wiki:

Also, I saw a few folks saying the 3PO blue body with the white markings is from the Clone Wars. (Belongs to the Galacatic Senate or a senator, I guess?)

4-LOM... yes.  I thought it looked like him but something looked off.  Perhaps the color/angle of photo just didn't let the details pop out.

Here is a better look at the heads from a button that Disney was handing out during/after the panel.  Pic from twitter (https://twitter.com/IoMPaul/status/852648527952044033):

Hey guys - I went to the Disney Merchandise panel and the build-a-droid expansion to protocol droids is pretty expansive.

From what I can tell, in addition to the 21 different heads, there are 14 different torsos.

Plus for each RA-7 type droid that can be made there are the unique RA-7 arms/legs.

I am going to swing by Hollywood studios mid-to-late day tomorrow, so I should have more specific details soon.

I was told by the Disney folks that the droids debut today (Friday) at Hollywood Studios, but will be available on Monday at Disney Springs. I'm here through Tuesday, so I should be able to confirm that.

The protocol droids I have so far (the two Celebration ones) have 14 POA, which is great. I'm hoping the same will be true for the ones you can build yourself.

Post by: Pete_Fett on April 15, 2017, 01:17 PM
Ok - so I was able to hit Tatooine Traders this morning and lieu of going back to the cluster known as Celebration.

They had 20 of the 21 head and all body/arm/leg parts.

The only head they did not have was the white square head Clone Wars Droid.

They looked in the back for me (for quite a few parts) so when they said they didn't have that head, I had no reason to doubt them.

I'll give Disney Springs a try again on Monday and maybe Hollywood Studios again on Monday or Tuesday before I leave.

Edit: if you thought the left right astromechs legs was a pain for the first wave, imagine how bad the left/right arm and left/right leg nonsense is. Especially with two types of silver,  blue and black legs, three types of silver arms and two types of black, gold, white and blue arms.

Edit two: when I was leaving they were in the process of switching over the second build-a-droid station back to having astromechs. While I was there a lot of folks were wondering where the R2s were. So I guess the staff at Tatooine Traders were trying to accommodate guests a bit better.

Yep. Same as the two carded droids from Celebration - neck, shoulders, elbow, wrist, torso, hips, knees and ankles.

I see that Jayson has posted a pile of New Droid Factory Protocol Droid (http://yakfaceforums.com/main/2017/04/15/new-droid-factory-protocol-droids/) photos at Yakface.

That blue Senate Protocol Droid from CloneWars is growing on me, probably because it's a little more unique than more silver/gold/red/white 3PO style droids.  I'd also like to get one with the Vendor Droid head at some point since it's new.

Very glad to see these posted as they are the the droids I spent 3 hours building yesterday. I built for both Chuck and myself, then handed them off to Chuck so he could mail my sets home and have his set, which he photographed and passed on to Jayson.  ;D

For a moment I thought that this droid might be a nod to something from Clone Wars:

But then I did a little research.  That led me to find the Guardian Police Droid on Wookieepedia, and it's a bit different:

I am however glad to see some variations on some classic droids.  The CZ model is nice to get, as is the 4-LOM based model.  I do wish there were some more color variations for the RA droid.  But most of all?  I'm really liking some of the options for the Threepio models.  Notably the blue Senate model and the black model.  Those both seem like direct nods to Clone Wars and 0-0-0 from the Marvel Doctor Aphra title.

The blue protocol droid with the Threepio model head most closely resembles D-0T from the Clone Wars Senate Hostage Crisis episode (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/D-0T).  That makes him a must-have for me!

Peter is the Droid Master!

I was bored last night so took about an hour, and took quick shots of each individual piece, and uploaded to my Photobucket account. The only piece missing is the elusive white Shopkeeper/Vendor head.

Haha! Thanks Chuck!

Went back to Hollywood Studios on Monday AND hit up Once Upon a Toy in a quest for that white Shopkeeper head. Unfortunately, no such luck. They didn't even have the protocol droids set up at OUAT. The parts at Tatooine Traders was dwindling as well. No one seems interested in building black droids or the white CZ droid. The gold CZ droid torso is being swapped in for the 3PO torso cause that's pretty much out. Nice mix of silver/blue/red parts, but I was more focused on the gold/white/black side of the table, so I really didn't take stock of those parts.

Hey guys, I used to post here a while back (when there were actually finds to report). Some of you were kind enough to pick me up Disney figures in fact and I wanted to try to be helpful in return. I passed this along to JTA earlier but thought I should Post here too.

The Clone Wars droid set is now live on the Disney Parks Merchandise App. I was able to call the Parks Merchandise hotline yesterday and get this set and r3d0. Below you'll see the phone number and skus (which made it easier to locate. Chopper was not in stock yet but some people are reporting he was in stock today as well as the 40th set with 3P0 and r2. One person reported that they would not let him buy r3d0 when he called. I had no trouble when I called though (unless they don't send it). I hope this info helps!

Disney merchandise hotline (877) 560-6477.

Clone Wars set: 400000639703
R3D0: 400000732862

My last eBay ordered droid (for now) showed up today. I got him for cheap due to the wrong legs (ra7 legs). The leg difference is negligible.

How much on average are you spending on these?  I'm tempted, but don't want to spend $500 on protocol droids to collect 'em all.

I'm probably going to be going down to Tampa in the next few months to visit my family and am wondering if it wouldn't just be worth driving over to Orlando to buy some in person.

Title: Re: 2017 Droid Factory Build-a-Protocol Droid Series
Post by: indysolo007 on May 3, 2017, 11:04 AM
So far I've paid:

C3p0/r2 set: $23.48 (mispriced on eBay)
Chopper: $21 shipped off eBay
clone wars set and r3d0: $39 off Disney Parks App
Blue Protocol 22.99 ebay
Silver Vendor droid: 22.73 eBay
Black protocol: 22.73 eBay
Silver CZ droid: 14.50 (due to the ra7 legs)

I'd rather pay a little more and have them in hand than wait for a price drop. I have a second tier that I want but will wait until prices are lowered some or someone I knows goes to the park.

While it's a little over an hour drive from Tampa to Walt Disney World, if you're going to be that close then IMHO, that's way better than paying 200% mark-up for each droid.

Do your family get annual passes? If they do, have one tag along, you'll be able to get a 20% discount on all merchandise purchased at the parks. (or at Once Upon a Toy over at Disney Springs)

If the parts show up at Once Upon a Toy over at Disney Springs (which according to the Disney Parks folks I spoke with at SWCO, they will be), you won't even need to pay for admission to Hollywood Studios...

Yeah I grew up in Clearwater, and my parents still live there.  I try to avoid going back home, but am on tap to visit at some point this year.

We expect the Protocol Droid parts to stick around awhile right?

Thanks for the tip on the 20%, I'm not sure if anyone in my family has passes, but I'll ask around before I go for sure.

Yes, the folks from Disney Parks were very excited to be expanding out into protocol droids and it showed when they spoke during their panel at SWCO.

They indicated that they want to have a constant presence of both Astromech and Protocol droids.

My thinking is that they will get into a groove of new waves of parts every 2-3 years. We had parts in 2012, 2015 and now 2017. There have been straggler parts, like for example, some new heads were added on to the 2015 parts around the time that TFA came out, plus they have thrown the holiday edition hats into the mix from the 2015 & 2016 droids.

So if I were to hazard a guess - new parts will be coming in 2019 to coincide with the opening of the Star Wars lands at both Disney Land and Disney World.

Next year will be nothing but carded figures, only now instead of it being all astromechs, I think there will be carded protocol droids released for certain events - I don't see any reason why they wouldn't consider having protocol droid exclusives for May the 4th, D23, Not So Scary Halloween or Xmas in 2018. And of course, don't forget that BB-8 as a Build-a-Droid comes out this summer around the time of the D23 convention, so there's always a chance that different versions of the BB unit would come out as well - since they once did a Holo R2, since Holo BB-8 shows up in Star Tours, that's my vote for the 2nd BB unit release.

I just got back from Disneyland and wanted to post this for those who are visiting Star Trader for the first time. First off, I had an amazing time building my droids!!! It was the first stop I made when the park opened. Star Trader is located right next to Space Mtn. and is pretty close to the park's gates. It is the only store in the park that carries the B.A.D.s. Downtown Disney does not have them in their large Disney retail store. But the C-3PO and R2 2PK were also available in a store selling Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy merch in the Downtown strip. I didn't see the other exclusives here.

The bin holding the pieces is kind of small. I walked right by it at first, but it is located in the back of the store and relatively in the middle. The bin has 4 building stations. 2 of them had the astromech pieces and the other 2 had the protocol pieces. I was lucky finding all the droid pieces. I was able to build the 8 protocols I wanted and the black and orange R6 astromech. I also easily found R-3DO, Chopper, the 2-pack 3-PO with R2, and the 4 pack Clone Wars Droids. They are all located on shelves close to the B.A.D. kiosk. Chopper was the only one that was very close to being sold out and was only at the cashiers.

I do recommend having some sort of blue print of what you want, because it is kind of over-whelming fishing through all the different arms, torsos and legs - making sure they are the right ones. Having another builder with you is also helpful. And as the time went on, the kiosk became really crowded.

The prices were:
2PK R2D2/C-3PO - 24.99
Chopper - 12.99
R-3PO - 12.99
BYOD - 2 for 21.95

Star Trader will also hold them safe in their store until the end of the day while you visit the rest of Disney. I really love these droids and highly recommend any collector to go to the park just for this experience. It was AWESOME!!!!!!

Star Trader has one and the other place is on the magic kingdom iirc.

Star Trader is near the Star Tours ride I believe.  I've never been to know but friends go frequently.  I'll ask the specific names.

Edit: Tatooine Traders at Star Tours and Once Upon A Toy at Disney Sprinfs are the two Steve.  Iirc the latter still had some older BAD parts from previous waves but not a ton of them.  This was from my buddy Jim.

Thanks to Jim.  I got 10 BADs.  Probably could have went for more but didn't want to push it.

Realized that I put the wrong torso on the black Threepio I made.  That's disappointing.  Wonder if I can find someone heading down to Disney that can help a brother out sometime

My buddies said the new protocols are much more nerve wracking to build especially if a crowd is there because the parts are so very similar with just minor sculpt differences.  I am definitely not gonna get hung up on having a 3po with all the arm variations or whatever.  That'd be nuts.  The domes and variety of color on the astromech line is one thing but this is much less interesting in that regard.  At least to me anyway.

Been lucky enough to have some help on these and down to all but three. It's been a very cool line, wondering how they could add to it.

I finally got down to Orlando with the family.  And I got to build a few protocol droids.  The ones I went with?

-Blue Threepio (D-0T)
-Black Threepio (0-0-0)
-Silver CZ droid
-Red Shopkeeper droid

I was tempted to do more, but I was trying to keep spending under control.

I have a black 3po and it is glorious for reasons I cannot explain.  Quickly became one of my favorite droid figures though.

Well put. I feel the same way.
