Title: Mister Jeopardy
Post by: Scott on July 2, 2004, 10:45 AM
Anyone watching the guy, Ken Jennings keep winning and winning and winning on Jeopardy?  He's won 22 straight shows and is sitting at almost $750,000.  Jeopardy was one of my guilty pleasures in College.  My room mate's dream was to make it on the show and so we'd watch every day.  He'd usually beat me but we'd be pretty close

They changed the 5 day Champ rule a few months back to try I suppose keep up with Who Wants to Be A Millionaire.

I was there to match my intellect on national TV
Against a plumber, oh, and an architect, both with a PhD
I was tense, I was nervous, I guess it just wasn't my night
Art Fleming gave the answers
Oh, but I couldn't get the questions right, -ight, -ight

I lost on Jeopardy, baby (oooh)
I lost on Jeopardy, baby (oooh)

Well, I knew I was in trouble now
My hope of winning sank
Oh, 'cause I got the Daily Double now
And then my mind went blank
I took Potpourri for one hundred
And then my head started to spin
Well, I'm givin' up Don Pardo
Just tell me now what I didn't win, yeah, yeah

I lost on Jeopardy, baby (oooh)
I lost on Jeopardy, baby (oooh)

That's right, Al--You lost. And let me tell you what you didn't win: a twenty colume set of the Encyclopedia International, a case of Turtle Wax, and a yeard's supply of Rice-A-Roni, the San Francisco Treat. But that's not all. You also made yourself look like a jerk in front of millions of people. You brought shame and disgrace to your family name for generations to come. You don't get to come back tomorrow. You don't even get a lousy copy of our home game. You're a complete loser!

Don't know what I was thinkin' of
I guess I just wasn't too bright
Well, I sure hope I do better
Next weekend on The Price Is Right, -ight, -ight

I lost on Jeopardy, baby (oooh)
I lost on Jeopardy, baby (oooh)
I lost on Jeopardy, baby

Ken Jennings on Jeopardy is close to hitting $1 million in winnings in the next day or so.  And tonight, he also tied himself for the highest single game winnings at $52,000.  This guy is like a machine.  I just wonder how long he's going to want to keep at it.

The Ken Jennings Media Tour may have fizzled had he not continued his amazing string on Jeopardy! Monday night. He did. And how he did!

The 30-year-old software engineer matched his own series high and, for the second straight show, tied the single-day record of $52,000 in garnering his 29th consecutive victory. Jennings is now in striking distance of becoming a millionaire with a win Tuesday. His total: $972,960.   :o

The veteran quiz show has seen its ratings skyrocket since Jennings' first appearance on June 2. On Tuesday, the episode that saw Jennings pass the $1 million mark delivered an 11.1 rating/21 share in Nielsen Media Research's top 56 "metered" markets.

That rating is up 25% over the 8.9/17 average that "Jeopardy!" posted in the metered markets during the week of June 28, when Jennings was already well into his winning streak. It's also up 41% from the 7.9 average household rating the show logged on a national basis for the week ending July 4, the most recent week for which national figures are available. With that 7.9 rating, the show was up 5% week-to-week and up 36% compared with the same period a year ago.

The show also managed to tie with "Wheel of Fortune" for the first time this season, with both shows sitting in the No. 1 spot in the overall syndication rankings for the week.

"Wheel of Fortune," meanwhile, was down 1% from the previous week. Among other game shows, "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" was down 6% to a 3.4, and "Family Feud" was down 17% to a 1.9.

He's like an Energizer Bunny, keeps going & going...

$1,022,460.  :o

On Friday, July 23, long-running champion Ken Jennings of Salt Lake City finished the regular season of JEOPARDY! (and his 38th consecutive show) by setting a new one-day record. Jennings won a whopping $75,000, eclipsing the previous high mark set by Brian Weikle of Minneapolis, Minnesota, who earned $52,000 on April 14, 2003.

Friday’s win brings Jennings’ total earnings to $1,321,660 and makes him the highest cumulative winner in JEOPARDY! history. Brad Rutter of Lancaster, Pennsylvania previously held the title after winning the Million Dollar Masters Tournament and a total of $1,155,102.

By all accounts, Ken now holds every JEOPARDY! record for winnings… and he’ll be back to try for more. From July 26 – September 3, JEOPARDY! will present encore shows of some of the highlights from the past year, notably the College Championship from Yale University, the Teen Tournament and Power Players and Kids Week from Washington, D.C. Then, on Monday, September 6, Ken Jennings returns to defend his championship in his 39th appearance, kicking off the 21st season of JEOPARDY!

Not a comic book fan I guess.

The Final Jeopardy question was: "In 2002, the Library of Congress had William B. Jones Jr. speak on this 1941-to-1971 comic book series in its collection."

Jennings wagered $21,599 in Final Jeopardy, incorrectly guessing "Captain Marvel." The correct answer was "What is Classic Comics?"

Thats a lot of loot to wager!  :o

With that wager even if he didn't answer right he would of been $1 ahead of the next person.  The other two players also got the answer wrong so he won by a few thousand instead of a dollar.

Jennings will probably owe about $1.04 million in federal and Utah taxes on the winnings, Byers said, citing preliminary calculations by H&R Block.

Meanwhile, Kansas City, Mo.-based H&R Block Inc. capitalized on the chance for a little publicity by offering him free tax and financial services for life, which Jennings accepted.

Old Cap'n Sweater is the Accountant, but judging by my accounting days...  A **** load of $.

He'll eat a lot from Uncle Sam unless he finds a way to finegal it like through charitable donation or gift-giving.  I'm not sure how winnings in a game, gameshow, etc. are handled by the government.  If they will just count it as income or what.  He may be able to make some of it back though depending on how he disperses it and then claims it at the end of the year.

At first though, it's gonna take a huge bite out of him.

Yup, you, me and a few others around here.

On my own gross vs. net I'm again trying to decide if the S-Corp I run should tithe as a business. I'm the only employee, so obviously my "salary" is considered, but the last few years we've just paid on the net of the company without separating myself as an individual from the corporation. We've got a good accountant, so I guess I should add this to the list of questions to clear before year end.

Thought I'd bring up this thread again since ol' Ken has been back on Jeopardy the last three nights as part of the final for the $2 Million Ultimate Tournament of Champions. Anyone watch?

He had a bye into the finals, but the other two fellas had to go through several rounds of elimination to get there. I thought no one would have a chance against him, but I was wrong. Over the course of the three-day final, he got his ass handed to him by a former $1 Million Tournament of Champions winner. He came in either second or third every day, and finished in second place overall.

It must be the predictability of it or something, but I wish he would've won.

Mister Jeopardy gets testy! (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060725/ap_on_en_tv/people_ken_jennings)

Quote
NEW YORK - "Jeopardy!" ace Ken Jennings, who won $2.5 million during his 74-game winning streak, has a few unkind words to say about the show — and dapper host Alex Trebek.

"I know, I know, the old folks love him," Jennings writes in a recent posting, titled "Dear Jeopardy!" on his Web site.

"Nobody knows he died in that fiery truck crash a few years back and was immediately replaced with the Trebektron 4000 (I see your engineers still can't get the mustache right, by the way)."

Jennings also takes aim at the show's "effete, left-coast" categories and "same-old" format.

"You're like the Dorian Gray of syndication," he says. "You seem to think `change' means replacing a blue polyethylene backdrop with a slightly different shade of blue polyethylene backdrop every presidential election or so."

A call by The Associated Press to "Jeopardy!" spokesman Jeff Ritter was not immediately returned Tuesday.

Jennings, a software engineer from Salt Lake City, snagged 74 wins on "Jeopardy!" in 2004 before he was beaten by challenger Nancy Zerg.

Trebek, 66, has hosted the show since 1984. In a "correction" posted Monday on his Web site, Jennings offers an apology of sorts.

"We regret the insinuation that Mr. Alex Trebek is a robot, and has been since 2004. Mr. Trebek's robotic frame does still contain some organic parts, many harvested from patriotic Canadian schoolchildren, so this technically makes him a `cyborg,' not a `robot.'"
