Title: Disney "Star Wars Elite Series" Die-Cast Figures
Post by: Jeff on July 23, 2015, 01:56 PM
Interesting news from D23 (https://d23.com/disney-store-at-d23-expo-2015/) today...

Quote
Disney Store will launch an exclusive collection of Star Wars items at D23 EXPO on Friday, August 14. The collection will feature apparel, collectibles, and toys, including the Star Wars Elite Series, a new line of highly articulated and detailed die cast action figures, representing characters from Star Wars Episodes I-VI. The action figures will be sold individually at Disney Store locations beginning later this year; however, D23 EXPO attendees have the opportunity to purchase the full set of Star Wars Elite Series action figures, which includes D23 EXPO-exclusive versions of R2-D2 and C-3PO.

Highly articulated die-cast action figures?  No mention of price or scale though...

Hopefully the quality is better than their die-cast ships.  The ships look nice, but the "play" features like rotating guns, landing gear, etc are... lacking.  The X-Wing for example looks great, except for the plastic parts, mainly the cannons.  Bent and warped and fragile.  The landing gear on the X-Wing, Snow Speeder and Falcon are all crap.  Still, for $8, they are pretty cool toys and my son loves them.

I'm not an action figure expert, but are there examples of well done die cast figures out there to know what might even be possible?

This just doesn't sound interesting to me...

There are things like Hasbro's Titanium Series Forged figures... though I would not have called those "highly articulated".

There was a line of 8" hyper-detail die cast from Japan (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=14697.0)

At the very high end, you have stuff like Bandai's Perfect Model Chogokin C-3PO (http://www.sideshowtoy.com/collectibles/star-wars-c-3po-sideshow-collectibles-and-tamashii-nations-901863/).

I think someone in Japan is also doing a new die-cast line... here we go - Metal Collection (Metacolle) Star Wars #01 Darth Vader by Takara Tomy (https://www.hlj.com/product/TKT82139/Fig)

Lots of stuff out there, mostly overseas though...  it's an interesting concept but usually "highly articulated" and "die cast" don't go well together without some plastic in there too.

From Twitter (https://twitter.com/justjenn/status/632252909787320324).  Still no confirmation on how articulated or what scale they are...

Just eyeballing they appear larger than 4" (figs are about 1/20 scale not 1/18) and smaller than 6"...  I'd say these are perhaps in the 1/15 or 1/16 realm, just by looking at them with little reference.

A hand is roughly 6" and they look to be about the size of the hand to me.  IT would make sense for them to go with more 6" figures vs. a new scale, but we'll see...

Looks like these are scaled to be a 6.5" line - some are slightly smaller (Rey = 6") and some are larger (Phasma = 7.25").  The TFA wave is up on the DisneyStore.com (http://www.disneystore.com/disney/store/DSISearch?Searchstr=elite%20series&storeId=10051&catalogId=10002&langId=-1&pageCmdName=dsi:homeLandingPage&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&N=0&Nu=pProductID&Nr=pPublished%3A1&Ntk=All_Shopping&Ntt=elite%20series&D=elite%20series&Dr=pPublished%3A1&typeAhead=1) now - $24.95 each.

Phasma looks a little big to fit with 6" B.S. line.  Rey could fit and the BB8 looks much better, but she would dwarf 6" Leia. The Stormtrooper looks like a good fit though. Very similar sized to Hasbros.

Thanks to Justin for the "review" of these. I grabbed a Stormtrooper and a Flametrooper. Really want a Phasma.

That Stormtrooper is awesome.  I have to recant my assessment after opening them though.  They don't really fit in with the other 6" figures at all (except BB8).  I grabbed Phasma, Stormtrooper, and Rey, and they're all just too big next to the 6" figures.  The Stormtrooper is close, but his head looks huge next to Black Series.  Rey looks like an amazon and Phasma is even bigger than the regular stormies.

They're still cool with a ton of detail and much more articulation than I expected.  I'll probably grab a few more (OT Stormtrooper, Fett, and Vader are musts), but won't replace my BS characters with them.

I got to hang out with Arnie & Marjorie from SWAN yesterday afternoon, and they were telling me a little bit about the Disney Elite figures.  Arnie was really impressed with them, and I think he's probably going to say as much on the next SWAN podcast.  And he also told me that the D23 C-3PO and R2-D2 set is a pretty hot commodity already.

I was pretty impressed with seeing these on the Global Unboxing event last week.  I would still like to see these in stores, of course.  Phasma seems to have caught the eye of many a fan, and I think that she's being put forth as the new cool baddie.  The stylistic nods to Boba Fett are pretty clear, like the cloak and the blaster.

I saw the ELITE SERIES Kylo Ren today at my local Disney store.  And it looks pretty cool!  Each of these figures are $24.95 each.

There was also a release schedule for more pieces that are due in the series:

SEPTEMBER 28th:  Episode I - Darth Maul
OCTOBER 12th:  Episode II - Anakin Skywalker
OCTOBER 26th:  Episode III - General Grievous
NOVEMBER 9th:  Episode IV - Stormtrooper
NOVEMBER 23rd:  Episode V - Darth Vader
DECEMBER 7th:  Episode VI - Boba Fett
DECEMBER 18th:  Episode VII - Character TBA

If anyone's interested in packaging variations, a case of the Stormtroopers at MOA Disney came sealed in Kylo Ren boxes.  We found about a third of them with the Ren package on 9/4.

You can also sign up to receive an email reminder when the new figures come out at each Disney Store.

Per Yakface:

"Between 12-1pm (Est. Time Zone), lottery slips will be given to people in attendance.  Those who’s lottery number are picked will be able to purchase the figure later in the day."

So you need to get in line, then hope to get the right lottery ticket.  Ugh.

I caved and bought the rest of these they had in stock. With free shipping and not having a Disney store anywhere around here, it was just too tempting. Now I just need Maul and Phasma.

Well played, Disney.  >:D

General Grievous arrived today...marvelous figure, but the leg broke off mine somewhere during shipping.

Update - I was able to reattach the leg by heating up the ball joint and jamming it back in the socket. Seems fine now. The arms are a bit loose though, tricky to hold a pose.

So, I broke down and bought one of these off Ebay for $65 shipped.  Way more than I wanted to spend, but I called Disney and they confirmed that they would NOT be getting more stock of these limited release figures.  Makes me all the more worried for OTC figures like Fett and Stormtrooper.

The auction included a few dozen "vintage style" Force Awakens trading cards that Disney was apparently giving out with these.  Anyone get these or know how many there are?  I can post a few pics if people want to see them.  My collector's math assured me that $65 was a bargain with these cards included.   ;)

I'm with you in wanting to buy a lot of these, but not all.  I would have avoided the prequel figs all together, but Grievous is a really cool looking figure.  I skipped Anakin, Maul, & Finn so far.  My bigger concern is the lottery for Fett, Vader, and Stormtrooper.  I already had to buy Grievous off Ebay for more than double the retail.   >:(

What a royal pain in the arse.  Hit Ridegdale Disney this morning to get the Imperial Stormtrooper exclusive.  I putzed around the mall for an hour and grabbed some breakfast, then got in line around 9:30 (the line consisting of one other guy).  Three more guys showed up by opening and we all raced in to get our troopers...to find nothing.  The manager informed us that the raffle for the right to buy one would be from 12-1, not right at open as seemingly advertised.  Apparently for Grievous you could just walk in and buy one, but both stores in the area were holding the 12-1 drawing instead.  Awesome.  He did say the Mall of America store had a lot more than Ridgedale.

So, I went into work for a while, then zipped over to the mall to put my name in.  There were about two dozen troopers from what I can tell and maybe 15 people looking for one.  I managed to get one (Yay!), but couldn't pick up any more for me or extras for friends.  I worked remote over at the book store for a few hours, then went back and talked someone into buying me one for $40 cash (I just let him keep the change).  They still have just a few left, but limited to one per person and I Don't feel like getting another for $40.

I get the point of the raffle, but A.) can you hold it at a less convenient time for everyone and B.) just release them for sale once everyone has had a shot at them?  I was especially impressed that they let the guy behind me buy three since he had a couple of 3 or 4 year olds with him.   ::)  I'm super excited to have this guy in hand all things considered, but what a royal pain getting there.

So, Justin, it sounds like next time you should take a day off, take the twins with you and maybe Sara if you can convince her and buy 4.  It does sound rather asinine.

I had heard the lotto being held 12-1 or something along that lines, but know how Target has had the "no helping the scalper" and looking for things in back, yet having new things out at open when most people but scalpers are at work doesn't help.  I wouldn't think noon would be a good time either since that's the lunch hour.  So when would be a good time? 7PM?  I don't know.  Maybe Disney Stores should a deadline where you can submit your name at anytime during the day at the store and then the winners are selected the next day?  Anyone else have a solution?

I have several problems with how Disney is releasing these.

A.) Its a Monday when the vast majority of people have to work or are in school.  Make it a Saturday or Sunday to appease the majority.
B.) Its not a consistent time/process.  Grievous was first come, first served at 10am.  Trooper is a lottery at 1PM.  What will the others be?
C.) No age limit for the lottery.  The tickets should only be allocated to people paying for their own stuff so one guy can't get 3 for dragging his toddlers along.
D.) Limit of one per person until some arbitrary time.  They should raffle at 1PM, give it 15 minutes, then let people buy the remainders.  by 4:00 they had put the extras out on the floor with all the other figures and no limit. Even though...
E.) The site protects a limit of one figure per person, despite being up a day later than the in-store raffle goodness.

I totally get and even appreciate them trying to make these spread out for as many people as possible, but I'd change just about every decision they've made to enable that.  Make them one per paying customer from 10-11 on some Saturday.  Big raffle event at 11 for everyone who put their name in.  Hold another raffle or make them available without limit by 12, which is also when they should go up on the site.  Move an hour here or there to match up time zones if you need to.  Done.

In the end, I did end up with 4 of the troopers: One from the raffle, one I paid a guy $40 to go buy for me, and two from when they put out another case at around 4:00.  I was at the mall SEVERAL hours to make that happen, but I really wanted a foursome to go with Vader.  Not sure what I'll do about Vader and Fett as I really only need one of each and they've been readily available on the site the following day.

Grabbed a Stormtrooper tonight. Thanks to Justin for the tip!

Glad you grabbed one!  I called the store this morning and there's just two left.  I have a $10 off coupon that starts today, but would need to buy two of them to use it, and not going back there a second day.  :P

Your solution is better than the current way it's run, Justin.  I agree.  1 per person per family if these are indeed a limited run item.

Everything outside of Maul and grievous appears to be in stock for $24.95 each.  I have a $10 off $50 coupon, but of course, I'm $.10 short of being able to use it on two figures and would miss out on the free shipping for 3 figures by $.15.   :-\

I nabbed Vader at the store on my way home yesterday.  He looks awesome with the shiny metal armor compared the plastic from the black series figures.  Like Nick, I've picked up a lot of these, but not set on being a completest.  I'm not getting Anakin, Finn, or Maul unless I see them really cheap.  The draw for me is mostly in the figures that wear armor or are made of metal because the finish looks so much more realistic than plastic.  Most of what has come out fits this mold (E7 figs, Vader, Stormtrooper, Grievous, Upcoming Fett), but most of the remaining characters do not.  Outside of more imperial troops I don't think I'll get too many more.

Looks like they did the standard 1:00 lottery for Vader yesterday, but there were still nine left when I swung by after work.  They have a limit of one per customer at the lottery, then apparently a limit of two per customer once they put them out with the rest of the merchandise.  The site still has a limit of one per person, which stinks for shipping.  I get the initial limit to make sure everyone gets one, but after that do you really need to restrict the number per person?  Guess I'll have to bring in my kids next time so I can get six Fetts.   ::)

I can't tell you how fired up I am about missing out on Fett over the last 24 hours.  ALL of the previous releases have had product in store post raffle and online the next morning.  I could not be there for the raffle on this one.  I know it's 1PM on Monday when most of us are sitting around wondering what to do with our day, but I actually had to get work done and attend a meeting versus hanging out at super convenient MOA.  I did manage to leave work early at 3:00 in anticipation of grabbing one at either of the two Disney stores, but called ahead to find both stores completely sold out.  Having been to previous raffles, I'm sure Guy-with-his-two-infants was allowed to buy up three at a time.  Awesome.  No matter - they are always available online the next day, right?  I was up until 1am working (gotta make up for ditching work at 3PM somehow) and checked the site before bed, but no sign of Fett.  At least I went to bed confident I could order one on the site the next day. Woke up at 5:30, showered and immediately went to order some Mando awesomeness...only to find him sold out already.  WTH.  Meanwhile on Ebay, there are 55 Elite Fetts up for sale (not including the 77 that already sold for at least twice retail in the last 24 hours).  Loving the fact that every other seller has 3 or 4 of them in his picture too.  Thanks Disney!  Awesome job releasing these and preventing scalping.

New figures are Poe in flight suit, Unmasked Kylo, and Rey with an added accessory.we saw them up close, but they are 1:00 raffles like the others.  Rey is identical to the first release outside of the additional weapon. Different UPC though for anyone looking to swap. I'll try to post pics later.

I really like the Jacen Solo, I mean Ben Solo (yes I'm a little bitter they didn't go Jacen). And I really like it more so because I really like Jacen/Darth Caedus in the EU world than the fig itself is that good.

I went back for the "new" Rey and grabbed Poe and Finn to complete the heroes.  Won't be getting too many more of these though unless they make bounty hunters or something.

Awesome surprise today when my Christmas present from a friend was an Elite Boba Fett he found while in Rome. Apparently they had a whole bunch of it. Silly Europeans.

Wow!  That is awesome!  Did he know you missed out on it?  Didn't even know they had these overseas.  Congrats!

A friend in FL picked up a Poe and unmasked Kylo for me. I'm still debating how much I really want to pay $30 for a tiny light saber.  :-\

I actually got now only three of the elite series figures for Christmas.  I got Finn (Jakku), Poe Dameron, and Rey (Jakku) with BB-8 and Rey had Luke's lightsaber.

I saw a pretty good amount of these at my local Disney store.  They look nice, but they really do feel a bit redundant when you're already invested in the Hasbro 6" Black Series line.  Granted, there are some things in this line that haven't been offered in the Black Series line.  But how long are we really going to need to wait for things like General Grievous or Kylo Ren without his helmet?

Free shipping today only @ Disney Store online...finally caved and ordered Rey with lightsaber. Feel stupid buying her twice but I guess I can make my money back selling my original at some point down the line.

Sounds like none.  I think Disney stated that they made all that they are going to make of these (for now anyway).

What's up with that price?  Weren't they like $200 at the D23 store?  Now suddenly it's "marked down" from $700 to $400?  Lame.

That's insane.  I might even consider it at $200 since you get two exclusive figs plus Fett.  I laughed out loud reading that there is a limit of 3 at the $410 price.   ;D  They are $500 or more on Ebay though, so I guess that's a deal.

I woke up and ordered one this morning at about 7:45am EST with no problems, thankfully.

I saw JTA put up a front page post about it about 8 minutes later and I'm sure that was the nail in the coffin. I kinda wish they wouldn't do stuff like that.

I wish we could get some definitive answer on if these are completely dunzo or if they plan to keep releasing the odd character here and there like Proto Boba.

Nabbed a pair over lunch at the Ridgedale store.  Didn't see any sign of Threepio or R2 yet, so I'm sure they are holding for for the mid May release.  I did get the cool free Fett pin though.

Cool stuff! I know 3PO is the Ep 7 version, but am curious if R2 is exactly the same as the previous con exclusive release. Don't see why it wouldn't be, his look never changes anyway.

The K2S0 looks really cool.  I'm tempted to get Cassian as well in those duds.  Feels like if I get a few though I will rationalize wanting them all.  I might try to wait for a nice sale on these.  You can get most of the first run figs for just $15 now...

Disney has a 25% off sale going right now with code DISNEYPAL and free shipping over $25.  I took the opportunity to nab 6 of the Elite figs: K2S0, C2B5, Death Trooper, Jyn, Cassian, & Old Han.  Not bad for $130 shipped, according to my collector math.

the Disney store has a crazy deal going on right now. They have 40% off on a ton of Star Wars items including many Elite Series 6" & 10" die cast figures. Plus there is a website you can get a 20% promo code AND there is another promo code for 15-25% off + free shipping. Here's how it all works in case you are interested...

1.) The sale items can be found at https://m.disneystore.com/star-wars/mn/1023301/ - Keep in mind there are a ton of other lines which have sales too including Cars and Marvel.

2.) Goto Glit City at https://www.giltcity.com/national/disneynov2016 and sign up a basic account and get a 20% promo code for use at DisneyStore.com emailed to you. I used one of my crappy email addresses to sign up, the address is about to be terminated any way so no big deal to me.

3.) After making purchases, use the code SAVEMORE which gets you 15% off $50 or more, 20% off $75, 25% off $100. Obviously the more you buy the greater the savings.

4.) If you order $75 or more, you get free shipping using the SAVEMORE coupon. But if you have less than $75, buy a cheap Moana item (such as https://m.disneystore.com/small-toys-more-toys-pua-windup-figure-disney-moana/mp/1411267/1014307/) then use the code MOANA for free shipping. You have to have a Moana item in your cart for the code to work, but the savings can really add up.

In the end their 6" Elite Series die cast figures are normally $27 pre tax, I got them for $9 pre tax. They have these killer 10" Rey and Vader figures that are normally $35 pre tax that I got for $12. And I found a fun talking 10" R2 that's normally $40 that I got for $12!  Even got my little girl an amazing Cinderella themed dress for more than half off. The total purchase I made would have been $327 that I got for $95!

An excellent opportunity for holiday gifts for friends, family, and yourself :)

Yeah it's an insane deal, couldn't believe it. It took about an hour for my code to arrive from glit city.

Well, my Glit City code did not come through until this morning and of course by then Disney altered the price of their figures from $15 on sale to $20 on sale.  I still managed to get 9 figures for $12 each, which is awesome, but could have saved another $30 if the code came through yesterday.  I actually kept the site active and entered the code and it brought up the full discount, but when I went to pay it dropped both codes.  Oh well, still a great deal.  Thanks for the head's up!

TC-14 looks pretty good, too!  And I'm kind of liking Bar2-D2 and the GNK droid as well.

I checked out the original video.  It looks like these were at Galactic Traders which is one of the shops at Disney Springs in Orlando.  The only way I was able to discern that was because I could see the Build-A-Droid station in the background.
