Title: San Diego Comic Con 2014
Post by: McMetal on July 23, 2014, 08:18 AM
Mods, please feel free to move or delete this if there is a duplicate thread out there...I looked for one but couldn't find it any of the the usual forums.

Seems like a pretty low buzz for SDCC this year. I gues the past few years' disappointments have level set expectations somewhat.

What are you guys really hoping to see? Surprise 3&3/4" figs? Next 2 waves of 6" guys? Upcoming store exclusives?

I would really like to see about all of the 6" figures that have been rumored about for the past few months, including Bossk, C-3PO, etc. I know the TIE Pilot is going to be shown too.

That's pretty much it. There are a couple of pieces of information I would love to get confirmation on too though, namely, what is going on with the Anakin/Clone Trooper 6" wave that has been MIA all year, and can they please confirm plans to release the Ghost in the Rebels line?

Wave 4 of the 6" figures are shipping now. I got my notification last night from Entertainment Earth

Cool, I thought i heard something about that. Are Boba and the Stormy still the other 2 in this case?

I'll drop this in here since we have a thread now...  Hasbro's pre-con PR blurb for Star Wars -
Quote
With Lucasfilm and Disney's new animated series, STAR WARS REBELS, premiering this fall, STAR WARS fans will be eager to stop by Hasbro's booth at Comic-Con for exclusive giveaways, an autograph signing and interactive panels. On Friday, July 25th at 12:00 p.m. , Hasbro will welcome STAR WARS fans to a special panel with members of the Hasbro brand and design teams as they discuss the popular Hasbro STAR WARS line and share a sneak peek of upcoming, never before seen action figures from the highly anticipated STAR WARS REBELS animated series.

I'm not sure what I'm expecting from SDCC this year.  Not much I guess...   recent history has me trained to not get too excited about whatever I see, because the final retail product will inevitably let everyone down (bad paint apps, bad distribution, bad case packs, etc). :P

This news about Hot Toys doing smaller scale SW figures has me intrigued. They are the gold standard in the industry IMO.
Title: Re: San Diego Comic Con 2014
Post by: Nicklab on July 23, 2014, 02:04 PM
Hot Toys announced 1/4 and 1/6 scale toys.  I think it would be awesome if they announced some sort of 1/18th scale line.  I think the dream of a lot of adult collectors is to have some detailed environments from a high end shop like Hot Toys or Sideshow.  But if anything I think this Hot Toys announcement is going to broaden what we see in the realm of 12"  and 18" figures.
Title: Re: San Diego Comic Con 2014
Post by: Jesse James on July 23, 2014, 04:12 PM
People would shart immediately at the price I'm afraid.

I have the Hot Toys Snap Kits Aliens figures, and they're awesome, but they're anything but toys too in a way.  The Aliens are sturdy in that line...  In the previous line though (AvP) they're pretty unstable and take some extra effort to make as such.

The Marines are poseable, yet not...

It'd be a heavily mixed bag of hyper detail, and hyper fragility.  I'd be into it because HT probably wouldn't go ape**** on the quantity of figures they made.  So the price would be an afterthought to me then.  I'd buy them but I know people would be po'd about one flaw or another since I've found HT stuff to be "fragile" and pricey.  Even their 1/6 seem a touch more fragile than even SS stuff which is definitely not kid friendly at all.

I'm in though on that idea.

So...hoping we will see ALL of those upcoming Saga Legends figures like the Jedi Temple Guard this week, but apparently it won't be til after the Hasbro presentation. (Even though they have all been leaked already)

The presentation is tomorrow, right?  It would be nice if the presentation would get streamed live, but that might be asking too much.  Especially since there are likely to be about 200 people live tweeting from inside the event.

Nice job on the JAKKS Pacific stuff, had not seen any of their pictures yet.

Man, some of those 20" figures (Boba, Stormy) are sweet. So much want, so little room though!

We'll be doing as much, as quickly as possible during the Hasbro presentation...  On the front page mostly, but I'll update whatever I can, as fast as I can.  I'll probably put a post in here that I'll just edit with bullet points as we go too.

I haven't.

I like some of the stuff, but I know some people won't give a poop on stuff like those Clone commanders, or whatever.

I'm enjoying what they showed.  Slightly disappoitned how tiny that Stormtrooper transport was though.  Yikes.  I'll buy one though. :)

So the Clone Commanders...  I like.  Medal Ceremony Chewie is a new-ish headsculpt on an old body.  Ceremony Leia's a nice and needed update to her.

I was a little bummed that the Stormtrooper Transport is SO small.  Smaller than the original vintage toy, so I'll be buying a vintage toy at this point I think to fix that up maybe or plan my own.  I'll buy the Rebels one just because though.  It's different.  It's new.

Some of the Legends/MS figures are ok looking but still not my bag.  Outside custom fodder I have no interest.

Few exclusives was disconcerting.  No K-Mart sets this year?  Yikes. :(

I'm not disappointed per se, as I really like most of the Rebs vehicles.  I'm just not as hyped as I hoped and there really wasn't a ton shown to think too much about unless you're a 6" fellow.

6" clearly is big for them, and will clearly be big for them.  They expressed how much they liked working on that line, as noted in our coverage on the front page.

I can't be mad at that because hey, being able to do all new versions of characters who've been done to death is a nice thing for them.

I dug the Clone Commanders, but it just makes me jones for Phase I versions of Cody/Rex and others, haha.

1.  That's true, I didn't think of that, Jesse.  The whole lack of a cool exclusive.

2.  I like some of the stuff put out in the 6" line, but to be honest, I think I've bought some that I may return and just stick with the ANH versions of the character, Bounty Hunters or first appearances, etc.  Bespin Luke is nice, but I'd like to have Farmboy instead.  I'm going to keep away from Prequel stuff, though I have an unopened Obi-Wan.  Clones- I'll pass on them.

I'm not jumping scale but Bossk shall be mine.  He has achacha jaw.

I will be ok with Chewbacca but yeah, not necessary.  Earlybird Bacca is where it's at. Now we have yawning Chewie.

The only Rebs figures I want are the DP Pilot and Chopper...  though that Devronian/IG set piques my curiosity.

Ummm...  Yeah.  Pants clean.

I feel similarly.  No articulation though, but yeah, he and Chewie are throw-aways kinda.  I mean Chewie's a nice scuplt but that LUke?  Very unnecessary.  I'm sure I'll wind up with one via a case, but I hope to get 2 of each commander ultimately.

And a couple Dutch would be nice.  He looks good and generic.  I like generic.

The head sculpt on that POTJ figure was cool, but the rest of the figure was approaching salt and pepper shaker status.  I can appreciate the update for the sake of articulation.  But I want to see some better photos of the face sculpt.  That's the make or break feature on the Dagobah Force spirit Darth Vader.

Well I'm excited for Dutch Vander, and is that Rex or some other Clone? Guess it's Wolffe. Leia looks great but I wouldn't be surprised if she just had shoulder articulation at this point.

Chewie... I think it's different. New headsculpt. The VOTC 04 version was based on ROTJ and had an open mouth while the Early Bird 05 was based on ANH and had a closed mouth. This one is a mix between the two?

The snarling Chewbacca is somewhat understandable.  I really, really like the Early Bird version.  But how often did you see Chewbacca that placid?  His best scenes are the ones where he was snarling.

Still, there was a way that Hasbro could have done this and made it a little more interesting.  Give him the Imperial blaster rifle and manacles for the Detention Block breakout.  That would distinguish this version to the point of making it a little more interesting.

Our Q&A is in, courtesy of Darth_Anton, and Hasbro was pretty open but not about everything.  Anthony DID knock out all questions we sent in, and so we'll have that posted as soon as possible.

Thanks to Anthony, and Solrac (Carlos Mercado) for taking care of ALL of our photo galleries, floor work, Q&A, and just generally putting up with all the requests and demands we've made on their OWN time at this show.  This is to be a vacation for these poor guys and they're working for us, and the site, so that's really a huge effort on their part.

Just home now and looking over the presentation stuff...  what happened to the rumored 3.75" Hoth Han? :(

At Toy Fair, Hasbro was hinting about a Dewback and the Hoth beasties, so I guess the Dewback is a good candidate for Wave 3 of the 6" Deluxe stuff with the other two revealed now.
Title: Re: San Diego Comic Con 2014
Post by: Darby on July 25, 2014, 08:19 PM
I was just thinking what would be next in the deluxe 6 inch line and I think a Dewback is about as strong a lock as you can get. I'd like to think a landspeeder wouldn't too much of a stretch, but not sure. A Snowtrooper and E-WEB heavy blaster and as mentioned elsewhere a Hoth Han or Chewie maybe with a Probe Droid would be candidates as well.

A pretty good SDCC, but a bit of a mixed bag as well.  Not that anything shown looks bad necessarily, but I was hoping for a little bit more news in the 3 3/4" Black Series.  I guess when we were given the teasers about "change your underwear exciting" and this massive 12 figure wave that they were referring to this line and we'd see a little more.  Maybe they will sneak in another 2-3 figures throughout the weekend in the case which they often do, but even some of the ones shown (Leia for example) have place cards that say Jan 2015.  That doesn't leave a whole lot on the way for the rest of the year for that line either.  I can kind of see putting Chewie out there again (I've always felt the EB one was pretty much "good forever"), and the new head is a nice spin on it.  Aside from the Mission Series, Chewie actually doesn't seem to hit the pegs all that often anymore.  I'm in for the OT offerings, and kind of like those clones as well (totally missed the Doom thing before as well, but that is cool).

I do collect the 6" line (the OT ones at least), and that stuff looks pretty amazing.  I can't wait for those Hoth deluxe sets, always a big fan of the Taun Taun.  The others like Bossk, TIE Pilot, and Han Stormie all look nice as well.  Like others have said, there is so much potential for this line since they can go and re-do all the big guns (and everyone else) for the first time.  I plan to stick with the OT ones going forward, they look nice.

I'm more excited than I thought for the Rebels stuff, particularly the vehicles.  I'm definitely down for that Transport.  Although I didn't have the vintage one, I had a good friend that did, and always thought it was pretty cool.  I'm on the fence with the figures.  I thought this time around I'd sit the toys out, and just enjoy the show, but we'll see if I can resist.  Decent prices with the 5 POA stuff, so it might be more tempting.

Overall, I'm pretty excited for what's on the horizon, but I just wish there was more 3 3/4" goodness (Black Series).  Not only for now, but it concerns me a little about Episode VII.  We may see the whole line switch to the 5 POA stuff, since there doesn't seem to be a lot of priority for the 3 3/4" articulated stuff right now.

Well, I just woke up with clean underpants, so I call shenanigans on that BS.  :D

Looks like some really nice looking stuff, and a few decent surprises in there. Random thoughts:

Rex, Doom and Gree all came out very well...the paint jobs are rough but i realize these are just crude samples.

Commander Wolffe looks terrific too, but what happened with Commander Thorne? No mention or sightings?

I am literally buying every Jedi Temple Guard I can get my hands on. That is an insanely cool sculpt, if only he could bend his elbows!

For Rebels, I think the only real "new" stuff they hit us with was the Troop Transport and that Sabine/Stormy 2-pack, but that is fine, there was a lot of focus there overall and I am looking forward to seeing these on the shelves this Fall. Everything they showed off looked cool, nice color palettes, and man, that AT-DP driver rocks!

So much 6" love! (yesthatswhatshesaid) Holy mother, the TIE Pilot is off the chain...that guy is gonna fly off shelves. The Wampa and Tauntaun deluxe sets were likewise outstanding. They do seem to be getting better with the human sculpts. That Han Stormtrooper is just an amazing piece of work. And the helmet fits!

Count me in for the Shadow Squadron exclusive, it's only a question of how many can I restrict myself to buying. That's a cool idea, I could really army-build me some of those Black Stormtroopers....

Nice that we got confirmation of the Emperor, but no mention of 3PO? Does this back up the speculation that he will be the Jedi-Con exclusive?

I can't say I'm disappointed, I didn't expect too much this year, definitely not underwhelmed. Or overwhelmed either.

Yeah I'm not disappointed either, but not cartwheeling...  It's ok.  It's not been a big shock or anything amazing is all.  And I'm not upset with that, but I'm not impressed either really.

Haven't seen too much reaction on it, but in addition to the outstanding 6 inch offerings, the Saga Legends/Mission Series stuff I thought was excellent. The Wicket/Biker Scout in particular I thought sculpt wise may be the best representation we've ever seen on these guys. Bossk/IG-88 also very, very good. IG-88 and the AT-AT Driver honestly were positively 1998, though IG's figures have all more or less been similar, outside of the neo-vintage release. I personally enjoy these quite a bit and feel they're getting better all the time.

About the 3.75 new Black Series:

-Leia Yavin offers the slimmest sculpt and best face sculpture, the rubor on her cheeks depicts here as a cute young lady.

Wish Hasbro wonīt altere so much the paint job for this figure till they get her into shelves.

-The clones Rex and Doom are nice too, wish they have removable helmets and paintes soles on shoes.

-Ducth Vander updates face and helmet but omit some details on left arm: the patch over glove and cilindres are plain orange scult; while Hoth Wedge looks with updated painted gloves for an reussed body.

- Dagobah Vader, the  Luke head is more appropriated for a toy cause is on a neutral expression, in contrast to the potj version wich spotted a rictus of death.

Some general thoughts on the Black Series 3.75"

Yavin Leia looks pretty good.  I appreciate the update to a figure that hasn't been done in some 15+ years, and that's about all I have to say there.  I would've preferred another version of Leia if given the choice.

The mystery of Hoth Han in the 3.75" line?  I'm thinking that might have been a case of mistaken identity.  Someone probably saw that on a list and assumed that the 6" figure was actually a 3.75" figure.

Chewbacca?  I've said my piece, but I think it bears repeating.  Chewie is a tough character.  Simply because he really doesn't have any costume changes.  A detention block breakout version would have been more interesting than this one.

The Clone Commanders are pretty cool.  Rex looks adequately battle-worn.  And the hash marks to denote his droid kills are a nice touch.  Commander Wolffe is probably the star here, because his helmet and look are the most unique of the bunch.  I hope that helmet is removable!  As for Commander Doom?  It took a while for me to recognize that this Clone Commander was from the lost episodes.  When I saw him there I didn't make the connection.  But seeing the figure?  Clearly, whoever designed this particular Clone is a HUGE Marvel/Doctor Doom fan.  I mean, this is just an over the top homage to everyone's favorite despot from Latveria!  After that?  I guess we're left wondering what became of Commander Thorne, who either didn't make the cut or may have been put out there in an effort to discover any leaks.

Dagobah spirit Darth Vader is a nice update.  The POTJ figure was pretty awesome in it's day.  But that figure came out about 13 or 14 years ago, and I think the aesthetics have passed that one by.  The one question I have after seeing this one in the Hasbro display case?  Does the head come off?

Gold Leader / Dutch Vander seems like a case of going back to re-do the notable Rebel Pilots from the Battle of Yavin.  The original version of Gold Leader wound up towering over many an X-Wing and Y-Wing pilot.  I guess now I can customize the old version into a Rosey LaRose figure!!!

I didn't really care for most of the Legends/MIssion Series outside the IG Concept Droid/Devronian set, and the AT-DP Pilot.  The rest I feel are inferior to the previous figures they have or I'm just not into their animated looks where applicable...  Oh and I did like Phase I Gree there, and will buy him.  I'd love to customize that into a poseable trooper.  Just wish the helmet were removable.

I'm ok with the Black Series 4" figures they showed, but it was about as exciting as the past waves of 4" TBS figures have been, so yeah...  It is what it is.  That said, I loved the Clone Commanders and they make me wish for a Phase I Rex, Phase I Cody, Bly, the aforementioned Gree Phase I, some of the recurring troopers like Fives and Echo, etc., etc., etc.  I'd love realistic updates of one and all of them.

I thought the Rebels Vehicles were the highlight (still from Toy Fair) for me, haha.  The Stormtrooper Transport ultimately underwhelmed me some, and didn't come close to generating the buzz (for me anyway) the AT-DP did.  I'm glad they made it though.  It'll work as something and I still will be buying one.

6" doesn't interest me (though I will buy Bossk I believe), however I think the detail, quality, and effort is obvious.  It's a well done line, I just prefer 4" scale and will go down with the ship as it were.  If I were NEW to the hobby?  I'd be all over the 6" right now, and I think that's what the main goal is...  If you're new you're bound to gravitate to that, and they want new blood in this line.  If you're old school you may also gravitate to it but I think they know they won't get everyone to move over.  I think they're getting many though.  They also mentioned kids taking to the line and that's important, and surprising.

I think our Q&A had some interesting insights and answers...  A big thanks again to Darth_Anton (Anthony) for taking time out of his con time to go do that, and photos.  Also a big thanks to solrac (Carlos) for taking time out of HIS time as well to take photos.  Both guys have been a blast to collaborate with again on SDCC Coverage for us.  And they're always super mellow about helping out.  No stress or anything, they just seem to always get it done and are always so concise and thorough.  It's really amazing!

Comic-Con impressions:

Unimpressed by the 3 3/4" TBS offerings...I need new characters that aren't clone repaints to get me interested. I might pick up the Ceremonial Leia somewhere down the road but beyond that, nope.

6" TBS is still not tempting me. Shadow stuff before C3PO is not a good indicator of a line they are trying to hit all the key notes on.

Happy with the Rebels stuff. Looks like a good kids' line, with vehicles and everything going for it. I hope they (and the show) do well. Especially liked the handling of the female/potential pegwarmer characters: put 'em in a two pack with a trooper and hopefully the two together will make the purchase happen. This almost feels like Hasbro is really trying for a change. I like the Troop Transport...I had one as a kid and this looks like a good update. The icing on the cake would have been a brainwashing unit, but its absence is understandable.

Regular Legends/Mission stuff was kind of boring. Bossk and IG-88 are great figure choices, but underwhelming after so many years...Wicket and Scout Trooper will be coming home with me, though, that Wicket is fantastic. The only star for Legends was the Temple Guard--I don't want it, but it looks so good I might buy it when I see it.

I totally brainfarted on that Temple Guard.  He's shaping up to be easy to customize.  He'll need a totally new lower body, but I can see making the upper body articulated fairly easily...  I'm definitely down for him to do some work on him myself.

I loathe the "Robe stuck to the leg" style of these though.  I feel that just looks so bad to me.  :-\  I think he'll be a popular figure though, even for people NOT buying into these.  I think he's going to sell.

The mission series: Wicket and scout are a blend of old and new design, with most effort of paint job done on the ewok than on the trooper.

The scout ressembles in his limbs the vintage 1983 figure, with the adittion of grey mouth.

I see the rebels at at driver has the points on jaws mask for the fisrt time on a 3.75 interpretation. In some photos those pins of his helmet look silver, which is more character accurate. I wish not to wait until december to pick it and compare it with my poft2 at at driver.

Finally, we are now some basic paint jobs are due to crisis and cheap line, but this is a unique chance of new 5poa sculpts, so letīs imagine what would happen if they have painted all them the wasy hasbro kenner did with its POTF2 line.

As SL snowtrooper, stormie, biker and at at driver the modeling is fair for scale, but the lack of detail in paintjob gives the sensation that we are looking at black and white photos.

It's a little weird that this year I was a bit more excited about the 6 inch line than I was about the 3.75, though I don't think I'm going to commit myself to pick everything up in 6 inch like the 3.75. It will be interesting to see how well all those 3.75 clones will do and if it'll help boost 3.75 sales.

OUt of everything shown, the things that gave me that special tingling feel were the At-DP, the troop transport and the 6 inch shadow trooper set.

I was watching the Hasbro presentation via SWAN's podcast this week, and it really drove home the point how boring the exclusives are this year - pretty much across the board.  There are a couple exceptions (the Walgreens Fett, and the Shadow set at Target), but other than those, everything is pretty lackluster.  Not a big deal necessarily, but I remember when exclusive stuff was a big deal - and often times quite cool (It wasn't that long ago I was chasing down vintage boxed Taun Tauns, snowspeeders, etc.)  Almost everything else offered is something we already have, repackaged, or something that we can get at every other retailer anyway (like the ship/figure sets).  Again, not a big deal, just an observation.
