Nym was totally a product of the time.   And it was specifically because of the Starfighter game.  If that game had the legs of a KOTOR or one of the other more popular Star Wars games, I could see Nym enduring as a perrenial candidate.  But I'm perfectly fine without a Captain Nym action figure.

Yes, but with Nolan on board as one of the producers & writers of Man of Steel, you've got to think that there's a possibility for linkage between the two story lines.

The Black Series 3.75" / Re: The Black Series 3.75" - Wave 5
« on: August 23, 2013, 11:07 AM »
I can't believe this eluded me, but it seems as if Hasbro may actually be committed to keeping the EU in the mix in The Black Series basic figure line.  Wave 2 features Mara Jade.  And while she may be the most recent Fan's Choice Figure poll winner, she's nonetheless an EU character.  Throw Darth Plagueis into the mix with Wave 3, and guess what?  There are 2 EU figures in the first 3 waves of The Black Series.

This turn of events is pretty nice to see.  And it gives me hope that we may see some more EU figures in future waves, too.  Personally, I'm hopeful that we'll see some of the characters from The Old Republic like Ven Zallow or Satele Shan.  Hasbro made a point of making Darth Malgus, Shae Vizla and the Republic Trooper.  A Jedi from that same property would be very welcome in my book.

It wasn't too long ago that people were railing against Affleck for his role as Matt Murdock / Daredevil in the movie of the same name.  Granted, that was 10 years ago.  And I think that Ben Affleck has grown tremendously over the last decade by making some great choices as both an actor and a director.  Considering projects like Argo and The Town, I think that Ben Affleck has really grown.  Will he be the right fit for this project?  Will he be able to escape the shadow of his phony intensity that plagued Daredevil?  That remains to be seen.

For me, the question is whether the new film will attempt to pick up where The Dark Knight Rises left off.  Given the lengths that Marvel has gone to create a cohesive universe, will DC/Warner Brothers attempt to do the same and try to build some continuity between the Bale/Nolan trilogy and this new project?  I'd like to see that, because frankly I'm getting a little tired of the constant rebooting we're seeing with so many properties.  And I think the audience is, too.

These are definitely not what I saw at Target.  Those were very basic, and looked like they would be at that $5.99 price point.  I did not see these at retail.

The Black Series 6" Figures / Re: 6" Black Series - 2013 Wave 1
« on: August 21, 2013, 02:17 PM »
I finally saw the Luke figure in a store yesterday.  This was actually my first sighting of any of the 6" figures thus far.  However, it was in a TRU store that prices their stock higher than other stores.  I was absolutely not going to pay $22.99 for a single figure.

The level of detail, however, was amazing.  Seeing really is believing when you finally see these figures in person.  The packaging looks cool, too.  Still, I'd like to see the other figures in person before pulling the trigger.  $80 for a wave of 4 figures is pricey.

The Black Series 3.75" / Re: The Black Series 3.75" - 2013 Wave 1

Finally scored the whole wave.  The last figure on my list was Padme, and I finally found her yesterday.  But I almost lost the figure before I even got to the register at TRU, because the bubble nearly came completely off of the cardback in the store!

The Vintage Collection / Re: The Future of Star Wars Collecting?
« on: August 21, 2013, 01:23 PM »
LEGO has done nothing but grow over the years.  Their foray into the world of licensed merchandise has definitely been successful since they've been able to take on properties like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and others with seeming ease.  And the fact that kids learn by playing with LEGO will continue to make it an attractive option for parents.

As for Hasbro & Star Wars?  I think we're in the middle of a transitional period.  Clearly, the 6" figure line is something that makes the Star Wars license much more competitive with other intellectual properties.  Just looking around the boys toys aisle, a good majority of the movie properties out there are primarily focused on 6" figure lines.  Marvel & DC Comics, NECA, McFarlane and others are focused on that 6" scale.  Because that's what collectors want.  The new 6" Star Wars line opens things up on that front.  And thus far, I've only been able to find a single 6" Star Wars Black Series figure at retail.  Initial indications are that the line is selling well.  Will that continue?  We'll see.

As for the 3.75" line?  Again, it's a wait and see game.  Will lower articulation figure outsell the premium articulation figures?  And will 6" outsell the 3.75" line?  These are things that Hasbro is going to be studying closely in advance of the Episode VII toy line launch of Spring 2015.  And no doubt those sales figures are going to shape what comes to market when the Episode VII line is unveiled.

The warg abilities do seem to be almost common among the Stark children.  These abilities had to have come from some place.  Although we never heard anything about these abilities regarding Brandon, Ned, Lyanna or Benjen.  I wonder if we'll learn more about this in the next book, or when we get to see Coldhands in the next season of the HBO series?

5620
Well, there is the whole Coldhands theory. A good number of people seem to believe that Bran's guide north of The Wall may in fact be his uncle.

The Varys/Illario thing totally clueless to me when I first read it too but after rereading it makes total sense.  And it sets up the whole Mormont betrayal and Dance with Dragons Targaryen surprise as well.  Part of me wonders if Varys know about Jon too...and he is pulling the strings with him as well.  Which is why he wanted Ned Stark alive.

I've been going back through the first book recently, and I read the Varys/Illario chapter when I went to the beach with the family.  It was funny to finally read it in that chapter which was from Arya's perspective and to not have Illario and Varys identified.  Especially after having seen that scene play out in season 1 of the television show.  The level of foreshadowing that's in the books really is staggering.  And I agree, a second reading really does help to illustrate things more clearly.

It's funny that someone should mention the Hound and the Grave digger.  I actually read something about that theory on AWOIAF and was totally taken aback.  Especially since I thought that the Hound had in fact been mortally wounded in that fight at the Inn at the Crossroads.  Now, I totally recall the reports of a raider moving through the riverlands who was wearing the helmet of the Hound.  And it seemed to have been well established that it was Rorge masquerading as Sandor Clegane.  But then what about the Hound?  If he is still alive, then where does his character go?  Will Arya re-join him at some point after becoming one of the Faceless?  Or will he play some part in the whole Sansa / Petyr Baelish storyline?  I'm leaning towards the Sansa story, since the Saltpans are (somewhat) near the Vale of Arryn.

Another thing that's got me wondering?  There have been a good number of mentions of Ser Arthur Dayne, the sword of the Morning. His sword, Dawn, was the ancestral sword of house Dayne.  As far as I know, though, it's not one of the known Valyrian steel swords.  Is it possible that Dawn is in fact the real Lightbringer that Melisandre had spoken about back in book 2?

Hmmmm...  Re-released Hoth Rebel.  That's all I got right now.

+1 here.  That figure was woefully under-released.  As for anything else from TESB?

I'm still hoping for a pre-Carbon Freeze Han Solo and a Bespin escape Leia.

Is Lil Ani new?

Pretty sure that it might be the same figure as the TVC TPM wave (Padawan Anakin).

I saw these last night, and OMG are they horrible.  Hasbro really dumbed this line down.  Granted, the new movie won't be out until 2015.  But Hasbro and Marvel couldn't figure a way to give the movie realistic line a little more life?  Especially since Avengers was such a huge hit at the box office?!?!?

Nice to finally see Merumeru!  The rumors during SDCC & CE2 were cool, but finally seeing the figure is believing!  And it looks like Hasbro has stepped up their sculpting on this particular Wookiee.  And seeing how good it looks on the card, I'm hoping that Hasbro will get around to revisiting Tarfful at some point, too.  The ROTS version of him was weak in comparison.
