Wow, already?!  That was fast.  Do you recall how early on you ordered it?

Same box as the regular boxset in the stores, right?  Good fit, and all that jazz, I assume?

The official site has a little feature (http://www.starwars.com/clonewars/about/news/news20050127.html) up on the upcoming Clone Wars: Volume 1 DVD.  There are also images of the chapter selections, front and back cover art, and disc art.  Looking forward to having these in DVD.

Picked up Sealab 2021 Season 2, Brak Show season 1 and The Grudge today. Great stuff. Also picked up a few other flicks, like Phone (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0006Q9464/qid=1106973335/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/102-7915844-5176150?v=glance&s=dvd) and The September Tapes (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00068CUO0/qid%3D1106973364/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/102-7915844-5176150) - both pretty good flicks.

Is this actually worth watching? I've had a boot sitting here for months that a friend forced on me, and I've ignored it completely.

A few details on Closer from DVDAnswers.com. I'm betting we DON'T get the one deleted scene we all want.  >:(

Quote
Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment has released early details on Closer which stars Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Natalie Portman and Clive Owen. The disc will be available to own from the 29th March this year, and should set you back somewhere in the region of $28.95. I'm afraid Columbia has yet to reveal the full details on disc specs, although we can confirm that the disc will carry an anamorphic widescreen transfer, English Dolby Digital 5.1 track and preview trailers. Further details on extra material should be revealed shortly. We'll bring you the official artwork shortly too, but for now, here's a single menu shot:

Looks like season 1 of The Greatest American Hero comes out on DVD tomorrow.  Wow does that ever take me back to my childhood.  Almost missed it looking over the Sunday ads when I saw a pic of the dude's logo with his red tights.  I don't recall the actor's name, but does anyone else remember this series??  Please don't tell me I'm the only dork here.  I think the guy was a bit of a clumsy superhero if I recall.

I remember that series as well, and remember watching it fairly regularly when I was a kid.  I haven't seen it since then though, and I'm guessing it probably hasn't aged real well.  Might be kind of neat for nostalgia's sake though.  I think the actor's name is William Katt (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001411/), and I believe he even screen-tested for the role of Luke Skywalker :).

Oops...what Dale said above :)

It looks like some good news might be coming for Matt Stone & Trey Parker fans (or maybe just me) - thedigitalbits.com just posted that Team America is getting released in seperate theatrical and "uncensored and unrated" editions. Hopefully they really mean it, and we get the full 2 minutes of puppet luvin'.

Glad I haven't bought that yet :)

Ditto!  Never found the WS version of it at a decent/cheap price before, so I guess that's good.  I'll wait for this one to drop, and get around to nabbing it eventually.

On the LOTR front, I finally got my DVD boxset case yesterday, nearly TWO WEEKS after they sent me the shipping confirmation e-mail on it.  Why would it take 2 weeks from Minnesota (I think that's where it originated)?!  Oh well, just glad I finally have it.

I can't help but feel overjoyed at what a wonderful gesture that was on New Line/LOTR's part to just pass those cases out for $3 a pop.  I freakin' guarantee you that George Lucas would've raked us over the coals for another $50 just to get the final flick and the case, with the previous two movies.  It's such a relief and oh so wonderful to feel like we're not getting taken advantage of - for once.   :)

Anyone hear if there's suposed to be an extended DVD of "Saw" anywhere down the road?

I know the Region 2 DVD is longer and when I entered my purchase of it today into DVDaficionado it came up with the designation "edited version" - so I'm leaving it sealed until I know more...

Anyone heard anything?

From what I understand the R2 version is the "Director's Cut" with a whopping 8 seconds - not a typo - 8 seconds of footage added back in. No thanks, I think I can do without that. It's proabably just a more gruesome version of Carey Elwes chopping through his foot, which would be cool, but no thanks.

As far as I have heard, there is nothing else scheduled for it at this time.

I'm definitely down for the Clone Wars DVD as well.  I personally have really enjoyed the series, and look forward to seeing the new installments next week.  Plus, from what I've seen, the DVD is fairly reasonably priced, so that is good too.  I'm really looking forward to it.  On another DVD note, picked up The Incredibles today at Wal-Mart.  Looking forward to watching that again soon...and selling at Wal-Mart for $15 and change.

Korean version is the same runtime, 114/115 minutes. It's not available at any brick and mortar stores, and DeepDiscount has the 2 disc for $15.99.

Is it a blind buy for you anyway? I watched it last night and it bored me to tears.

No I've seen it - and enjoyed it immensely.

The Deep Discount DVD page for 15.99 has the correct cover-art but the specs are for some crappy Charlie Sheen movie from the 90's - so I'm not going to order from them.

Have you seen "Koma" or "Doppelganger" yet, Rob? Hollywood Video tends to get a lot of Tartan Extreme movies, llike those and "Phone". I figure maybe they can be specially ordered there as well.

Looks like the first dose of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon DVDs is on our way, about the time of San Diego Comic Con this year.  It will start off with a "Best of" consisting of 10 episodes decided on by the people at He-Man.org, and is rumored to be leading to season box sets later on.  TVShowsonDVD.com (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=3245) has the scoop, and screenshots from the video, which has apparently been cleaned up.  Here's the box art:

Anyone else plan on grabbing this oddity? It's a Best Buy exclusive, Dave Chappelle's short lived movie business sitcom called "Buddies". It's a 10 episode disc, so they say, although 13 episodes were created, and only 5 aired.

$10, it's a unique addition, would fill out my Chappelle DVD collection, and make for an interesting conversation piece. It won't be for rent, or available anywhere else, so it's sort of a Best Buy monopoly. Thankfully, it's cheap.

I searched high and low for the X Files: Mythology Vol. 1 set, only to find it was delayed until 6/7. Not too happy, but kind of nice, having just spent $180 on all 4 seasons of CSI this week.

Not interested in anything else this week, next week however is pretty big with Chappelle's Show Season 2, and the 2 discers of Man on Fire, Day After Tomorrow, and I, Robot.

Enforcer
Magnum Force
Any Which Way you Can
Pale Rider
Heartbreak Ridge
Firefox
Where Eagles Dare
Bronco Billy
Absolute Power
Bloodwork
Escape from Alcatraz
Perfect World
Space Cowboys
True Crime

They also had a bunch of Eddie Murhpy titles for the same price.

Beverly Hills Cop
Beverly Hills Cop 2
Beverly Hills Cop 3
Golden Child
Harlem Nights
Coming to America
48 Hours
Another 48 Hours
Trading Places

I bought "Escape From Alcatraz" there this past Tuesday, but not from the dump bin, it was priced at $7.88, I believe. For a short time, they had a section with movies for $3.88 or $4.88, can't remember which, mostly "Night at the Roxbury" and "Saturday Night Fever".

I'd seen that awhile back, but did some research and came to the conslusion that they were the same length.  Looks like Amazon just typed something in wrong.

Just Stripes for me, I think. And The Machinist (which I managed to track down at the theater, and was excellent).

I just can't quite bring myself to get Be Cool. It was such a horrible disappointment that I don't know if I can suffer it a second time. What a total waste of every talent involved.

Just thought I'd alert everyone to Hollywood Video's new trade in program. They're accepting over 20,000 movies, VHS and DVD in exchange for store credit. DVD's average $3, VHS $0.50-$1.

Right now however, all DVD's, not sure about VHS, are $5 a piece trade in value.

That said, I ran to a local pawn shop and bought 8 DVD's for $14, turned around and traded them to Hollywood for $40 worth of store credit! I'll probably do it again, since the deal is limited. However, the program is apparently here to stay.

Thanks for that. I've been trying to find some way to dump my useless older DVDs. Some have just about zero resale value, like Matrix Revolutions. They're not even worth slapping up on ebay.

Can't wait for Jaws and Casino tomorrow. I saw them both at about a dozen Walmarts over the last week, out early, but only P&S.
Title: Re: 2005 DVD Thread
Post by: Cory Chaos on June 14, 2005, 01:39 AM
I thought about nabbing those two with the store credit, but figured I'd save it for their next 3/$25 sale, since both will be @ $15 at Circuit City tomorrow.

They aren't very selective as to what they take in either, apparently. I was told once the initial $5 value period is over, $5 still can still be rewarded for films they don't already have in their rental library. Titles they do go straight to resell. Mine had "Scrooged" for $15 for some odd reason.

I brought in Indian Summer, For The Boys, Cannonball Run, Caddshack 2, Major League 2, just reeeeeal stinkers that the pawn shop was trying to unload, because I already sold 10 from my collection for cash the day before.

Enjoy!

Can't wait for Jaws ... tomorrow.

Ah, ****.  What's the story with this one?  Special 20th Anniversary Edition?  Anything special about it?  I haven't been paying much attention lately, and hadn't even heard about it.

As for the Stripes Extended Edition that I picked up last week, I've got to say that I was extremely disappointed with the 6 added scenes worth an extra 18 minutes.  Most of it was boring crap, with no humor whatsoever, just further elaborating on how they moved from one scene to the next at several points in the movie.  Dumb.  Good edits, and definitely not worth adding back in.  They did have one decent nude scene added back though, so that gets a thumbs up, of course.  :P

BTW, anyone figure out how to play the movie withOUT the scenes added back in?  I don't see that option anywhere, but the CD box says it comes with the original theatrical cut as well...  Also, did anyone get a chapter listing insert?  There was nothing in my DVD showing any of the scene selections/chapters whatsoever.  Weird.

Well, it's apparently the same transfer as the old disc, which isn't a bad thing. It has both DD and DTS this time on the same disc, and also includes the original mono sound mix that was nto included before. For a purist, that is a good thing.

The original 2 hour docu that was on the old Signature Series laserdisc is back on the new release (apparently still missing a few bits, but oh well). It was edited down to nothing on the previous release. It's good stuff.

As for the TE of Stripes, there's an option on the second menu screen in the "Play Movie" tree that allows you to select either the EE or TE. Probably so obvious you just missed it. I thought the restored scenes were fine, even if the South America thing wasn't particularly funny. Strange that that seems so implausible, but them later driving one heavily-armed recreational vehicle into Czechoslovakia is perfectly OK.

"Come on! It's Czechoslovakia. It's like driving into Wisconsin."

And the new line is great...

"I got the **** kicked out of me in Wisconsin once."  :)

"Rocky Horror Picture Show" 2 Disc 25th Ann. Edition. It's been OOP for quite some time, and eBay copies have fetched upwards of $90.

I got mine for $10.99, all inserts, MINT AS CAN BE! I was sooo excited, since I had been holding out on the single disc editions in hopes of finding the holy grail of cult cinema DVD's...and I did! ;D

Looks like they are changing up the packaging for the Simpsons season sets, going with "character head" packaging.  You can check out a preview of Season 6's look HERE (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=3576).  Sounds like they will continue with different characters from here on out, at least for awhile.  Kind of neat packaging, although the seasons won't all be "uniform" with each other now.

Also, it sounds like a Direct to DVD Family Guy movie will be hitting in September.  It will focus on Stewie, and you can read more about that HERE (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050620/film_nm/television_familyguy_dc;_ylt=AhM7RIkrXTFt_a1gwKLYvAlxFb8C;_ylu=X3oDMTBiMW04NW9mBHNlYwMlJVRPUCUl).  More Family Guy is always better, and I'll be anxious to see what this movie is like.

Has TV on DVD reached such a competitive state that they need to resort to these kinds of gimmicks to move even the Simpsons? I'm really anal about organizing my DVD collection, and I absolutely hate packaging that doesn’t conform and work with normal display. I like to be able to read the spines and I don’t want a giant yellow Homer head sitting in the middle of my 1200-odd DVDs.

I was milling around Best Buy tonight (which was kind enough to demonstrate once again that their inventory blows) looking for something new and exciting, found nothing, and came back home to see what was coming up next week. Boy, there's nothing good coming. Even in the next few weeks, there's just not much happening DVD-wise.

This is the best I could do in my search:

I've only watched one episode on there, but if you look at it the same way as when you were a kid, they are still fun.  The good ole days.  Sounds like full season sets are headed out in October-ish as well.  I'm not sure if I'll shell out the money for those or not, but its nice to at least have a few episodes on DVD.  I remember the days of coming home after school (or before school/summertime) and catching shows like He-Man, GI Joe, Transformers, Thundercats, and for awhile...M.A.S.K. (if anyone remembers that show).  I'm not sure which was my favorite, they were all good :).

What is up with Best Buy lately? Not that I'm a fan by any stretch to begin with, but man, have their prices gone into the toilet. (If it is possible to go up in price and down the toilet at the same time).

They have Sealab Season 3 "on sale" this week for $26.99. That's the normal retail price they sticker it with. The other day I passed on the 2-disc Constantine at Circuit City at $22.99 when I figured that BB would be at that price or lower. When I got there, it was $24.99. They didn't even do a sale price on Very Long Engagement and instead plopped in on the shelves for 22.99.

This week, I'm looking forward to:

Unfortunately I'm in a crappy state of limbo with my move, so I can only watch movies on a laptop... in a hotel room. Sort of defeats the purpose of The Jerk, which is to get it in anamorphic widescreen. Would be nice to watch it on the projector.  :-\

This new style does not fit well with the previous 5 seasons....and is a bitch to read on the shelf!

I agree, I'm one who wants to have all the seasons too (missing a couple right now though), and I would have preferred a more "uniform" look on the shelf.  If they wanted to do these "head" cases, they should have started them from the beginning.  Like you mentioned, I don't think the packaging makes any difference...its Simpsons, so it sells.

Very nice.   8)   That's gotta be worth a couple bucks.

We've played with the idea of getting one of these for long road trips for my daughter to pass the time - she loves her Disney and Barbie movies.   ;)

Just curious - how does the screen perform under bright light (sunlight that will likely be abundant during a road trip)?
Title: Re: 2005 DVD Thread
Post by: DSJ™ on August 7, 2005, 05:40 PM
Very well, you just have to adjust the angle of the screen so you can see the picture better or it comes out a little off color/fuzzy. I find the sound on mine older one to be a bit tinny if you use the unit speakers. I bought a pair of Koss speakers and the sound is incredible, really brings it out and you can crank it up louder.

I took my other one backpacking with me last year and the battery worked fine, nothing like a few brew and a flick in the middle of the mountains.  ;)

I looked on Costco.ca the other day and they had it listed for $189.99. CDN but it's out of stock.

This would be ideal for your self daughter.  ;)

Speaking of winning things, I gave blood a couple of weeks ago and ended up winning season tickets to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.  It's not something I'd necessarily buy, but I'm very happy to have won it.  Two tickets, about $450 value :)  Guess I'll have to get some kulcher.

Could be worse I guess...should've left well enough alone.

They're going to have to ditch the "head" idea after a handful of seasons because they have something like twenty or so to go yet and there are not enough "heads" to complete it!

*Sorry for the run-on sentence.   :-*

The original King Kong set to get a two disc release (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050805/film_nm/kingkong_dc)

Just in time for PJ's remake.  Will probably pick up the box set with Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young in it.

Hello all,

Well I upgraded my t.v. to a 50 plasma this past week and got an upscale dvd player so went on a dvd buying spree.

Picked up the following this past week:

Patriot (Superbit)
Spiderman (Superbit)
Spiderman 2 (Superbit)

I had a great weekend movie wise and I wanted to share, sor-ry. Besides, you can't "scalp" something that no longer has an established value, not that a $0.99 starting bid is scalping, not to mention profits go to buy ME more movies. If that's the case, there's tons of people just like me that you guys deal with on a regular basis if you're buying anything released before ROTS.

I'll refrain from sharing anything I bought, rendering my participation on these foums useless. ::)

It's not much of a stretch from what everyone else is doing, to be honest. We come here, share what we are buying or bought, and there's not much else to it. I had a great day hunting, had an evern better day today, and I needed to share it with people whom I thought may enjoy hearing about it. That's all.

I'll just keep my exciting little hunts to myself..just thought it was interesting to share.

Yes, it is.  Nobody else in this thread is bragging about what DVDs they bought at some hole in the wall pawn shop for the sole purpose of reselling them for profit.  This thread doesn't need to become like the one on RS that was closed - post after post bragging about "exciting little hunts".  Trust me, nobody gives a ****.

Also today, those of you who happened to pick up 20th Century Fox's The Simpsons: The Complete Sixth Season  today will find a little card inside your packaging... "For all those that fear change." Basically, if you don't like the new "character head" packaging, Fox is offering to send you (for the cost of the postage) replacement packaging for the Season 6 set that matches the packaging for Seasons 1-5. All you have to do is call 1-888-223-2369 for instructions (the insert mistakenly says it's a 1-800 number - it's not), OR visit the special simpsonsbox.com  website the studio has created to handle the replacement program. You know, I have to give Fox a lot of credit, both for trying something new with their packaging AND for offering to take care of the fans who preferred it the old way. Very nice indeed.

Thanks for posting that link Scott.  I decided to pick up the Season 6 set this weekend, since Target had it on sale for $29.99.  After getting it home, I really dislike this whole "head case" thing they have started now as well.  I guess it wouldn't be quite as bad if they were all packaged this way, but I kind of like things to "match" on the shelf too :P.  Anyways, I think I might end up sending off for that alternate box as well.  The Homer head just doesn't sit on the shelf too well.  Interesting design, but its sometimes better to have things more "uniform".

Im holding off on getting rid of it for now.  I could be mistaken, but the original 2-disc version may have some deleted scenes that were not included in the recut.  Plus the original 2-disc is in DTS.  So having both sets is the ultimate 5 disc version til the Blu Ray comes out in the future.

It does have the theatrical cut on it as well, if you care -- which wasn't on the first disc. I'm thinking about getting it for that, just because I feel the need to have the version I knew for all those years in my collection, even though I prefer the extended cut.

This isn't a "real" DVD, but I came across something called "Superman II: The Restored International Cut" over the weekend. Anyone ever hear of or see this before?

I just found a website with some more information about this disc here (http://www.supermanhomepage.com/movies/movies.php?topic=sup2-RIC-review)

Dave, I saw this a while back.  It was a combination of the Theatrical Release and the footage for TV combined.  It has never been released on DVD.  These types of boots are more common than people think.  Alot of movies in years past had extra footage made strictly for TV (Jaws 2 comes to mind).   Someone just combined footage.  There is also another cut out there somewhere.  It combines Superman 1, 2 and the TV footage.  From what I understand Donner filmed part of 2 or all of 2 when the first one was filmed?  There is also extra Brando footage that was to be used for the new Superman.  What is left in Superman Returns is only Brandos voice.  Superman Returns picks up after the second movie and erases all that crap that was made in episode 3 and 4.

Yeah, my general feeling is that if it's an actual Director's cut, then that's the only cut I'm concerned with.

If a studio jacks with a movie and inserts more scenes, I'm not so interested.

http://www.joblo.com/releases.php?mode=dvd&month=September&year=2005

9/20 according to the site I use...

Not that anyone is as excited about this DVD as I am, but this whole Swamp Thing DVD release is very weird.  Most sites say the release date was 8/23, others say it'll come out on 9/20.

I can't find it at ANY brick and morter stores, but most online stores have it.  I ordered it from Barnes and Noble.com and it shipped today.  So I guess it's out, but all stores didn't get it yet.  Weird.

Anyone notice this happening with any other releases?

So I'm reading about the Blues Brothers disc at digital bits and it seems like it's the same extended cut that came out in 2003 .... so I might just scratch that off my list.

It does has both, extended and original (as has already been said here) - but the biggest reason to get this is the new transfer. This movie has never looked so amazing. If you haven't picked it up yet, and are on the fence about it... go and get it. It's well worth it.

I forgot "Save the Green Planet" was released today! I saw that trailer like 3 months ago and decided to blind buy it as well. But the $25 price tag isn't very inviting.

EDIT: Nevermind. There's an R0 2 disc set that goes for about $9.99 on eBay, brand new.

I'd also suggest passing on "The Deer Hunter". It's only 2.0 stereo audio, and doesn't include the extras it claims to have, and the only difference between it and the old release is a new anamorphic widescreen transfer.

Toy Story 2 Disc
To Kill A Mockingbird

..and when I got to Wal Mart, they had this series of WB DVD's called "Comedy Double Feature" for $7.84, so I grabbed this..

Copies, better yet, bootlegs, boss. That is if they even actually have them, given they haven't recieved any feedback for any of the movies they've sold. I have the real deal in my possession. That seller's feedback is made up entirely of purchased ratings, i.e. $1 for "How To Get More Feedback on eBay!" scams.

Unless, of course, they actually have 10 copies of "This Island Earth" for sale, per their auctions..or 10 of "Mystery Science Theatre 3000"..or the alternate ending "Little Shop of Horrors"..or "Fletch". Better yet, strange how they've had 4 Vinyl caped Jawas for sale in the past month.

Here's a link for ya..

AUTHENTIC "This Island Earth" - $114 (http://cgi.ebay.com/This-Island-earth-Image-DVD-OOP-genuine-USA-release_W0QQitemZ6426509088QQcategoryZ617QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

I dont' see anything to suggest that the second link I posted is a bootleg - the guy has over 400 positive feedbacks and says it's from his personal collection.

But either way - I'd rather have a 20 dollar copy than a $100.00 dvd of a movie that can be had in a double feature disc and will in all probability see a re-release sometime in the next year.

But if you're happy, I'm happy.

But if you're happy, I'm happy.

Well, I meant the first seller, namely, because I asked about their copies of "Mystery Science Theatre 3000: The Movie", that was, before I got this one (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6429243379&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1), and of course, no answer. Another  seller was kind enough to admit to it being a DVD-R.

Region 0's DVD's are crap shoots, really. Image Entertainment lost their licenses for both TIE and MST3K, having let their contract on them expire in the same year (2001), thus becoming discontinued. If the day does come where either of these become obsolete by way of re-issue, I'll be the first to know, and I don't think I'll have a hard time flipping them, either. MST3K likely won't EVER happen due to it being pulled for license expiration and unresolved MSRP issues with Universal (ironically featuring "This Island Earth").

I'm far beyond happy, I've been fortunate enough to finally obtain two of both my, and 1,000's of other serious DVD collectors, most sought after discs of all time. I don't have interest in Criterion's "Salo" or "The Killer", so I can now die happy ecstatic. $100 is a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Hmm..well, since I last posted I sold about 25 or so titles and then bought/ordered/recieved the following:

Marx Bros. Silver Screen Collection (OOP)
The Rock: Criterion
Halloween 4
Prom Night (OOP)
Bad Taste 2 Disc LE (OOP)
Jurassic Park Trilogy 4 Disc Set (OOP)
Scream Box Set Bonus Disc
A.I 2 Disc SE
Don't Be A Menace... UR SE
Scary Movie 3.5
The Longest Yard (2005)
Mallrats 10th Ann. Edition
Carlito's Way Ultimate Edition
"Ed Wood" (The OOP Recalled Edition)
Haggard
Swamp Thing
CB4
Darkman
Rounders SE
The Fugitive SE
Maniac
The Nightmare on Elm Street Collection
Bourne Supremacy
Maximum Overdrive (OOP)
ROBOTS
Almost Famous 3 Disc Bootleg Edition (OOP)
Superman: The Movie
The Pianist 3 Disc LE
Munster, Go Home! (OOP)
Sin City (Dwight/Gail Cover)
Delta Force
Spiderman LE DVD Gift Set (OOP)

This weeks purchases, however..

The Fly SE (2/$20)
The Fly 2 SE ($2/20)
The Fog SE (Free ticket to "The Fog" 2005)
The Warriors DC
Cinderella PE
Star Trek: Nemesis CE
The Amityville Horror (2005)

"Suicide Club" is an odd movie. I saw that a year or so ago, it's more of a parody on how pop music influences todays teens, with glam rockers that like to hang out at bowling alleys.

I saw "Man With the Screaming Brain" this past Saturday on DVD, (got a PT job at Hollywood Video), and I couldn't stand it.. Don't see much re-watch value in it. Same for "Alien Apocalypse". Also saw "The Interpreter". Pretty boring and anti-climactic a la "The Manchurian Candidate" (2004), however, "My Summer of Love" was excellent.

BTW, if you're looking to get into Cronenberg, don't buy "Rabid". It's one of his worst, and that's pretty much public opinion. I'd recommend "The Brood" if you've never seen it. It's easily one of his best, and is better than half the Horror/Sci Fi out there today, even at 25 years old.

I'll end up renting "Kicking and Screaming" and "Kingdom of Heaven" on Thursday to review, while "Unleashed" and "Haute Tension" have been on my wishlist ever since I saw them.

Always seems we split right down the middle, eh, Rob. Like 1/2, don't like the other, lol.

Up to 66% off J-Horror (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/am/103-5600239-7861439?p=tg%2Ffeature%2F%2D%2F578485%2Fref%3Damb%5Fcenter%2D6%5F105527001%5F3%2F&l=105527001&c=105527001&i=1299803023&s=1)

Deep Discount is having a big sale on Anchor Bay Horror titles. It started on the 1st, which was then the "Book of the Dead" 2 pack was announced, so I hopped on it, and pre-ordered the set for $33/shipped.

As for re-releasing the original "Book" singularly, nobody knows.

"H" is a pretty good movie, I bought "Stacy" the other day for $3.99 and love it, and "Evil Dead Trap" may be a blind buy pretty soon here.

"Ed Wood" (The OOP Recalled Edition)

Weren't the DVD's that were released offically later down the road the exact same DVD's that were sent to stores but never officially released?

(I got my copy the first day, some guy at one of the Best Buy's was selling them at the table - said no one had stopped him yet even though he knew about the recall)
Title: Re: 2005 DVD Thread
Post by: Cory Chaos on October 11, 2005, 06:45 PM
They share the same UPC, but there's a pretty big difference, mainly the reason for the recall, being the 9 minute cross dressing documentary that was removed at the request of Tim Burton. The way to distinguish the two is in the spine. The recalled version has a gray spine, white letters, and pink trim. The regular release has a black spine, white letters, and pink trim. The actual deleted feature isn't mentioned on the back of the cover art, either.

I bought both "Ed Wood" and "My Neighbor Totoro" for $30 combined. Ended up selling "Totoro" and that covered the $25 I spent on "Ed Wood", and then some. I'm just storing the DVD. It's sealed, and I just bought it because the opportunity was there. It sells for about as much as the regular release does at retail, now.

I pretty much have every movie on that J-Horror sale list, except these:

Face
Dark Tales of Japan
J Horror Anthology Legends
J Horror Anthology Underworld
Kadokawa Mystery & Horror Tales Vol 1
Kadokawa Mystery & Horror Tales Vol 2
Kadokawa Mystery & Horror Tales Vol 3
Mail
Unborn But Forgotten
Spider Forest

But I'll have them all around 11/2 or so  ;)

When I get paid this week, I'm definetely picking up Hitchhiker's Guide and Kingdom of Heaven.

Otherwise, I'll forget to buy them.

I know it's pretty early, but does anyone know when Serenity hits DVD? I've heard Spring 2006 and December 2005, so I'm just throwing the question out there for those who know more about the subject than I.

I'm fairly positive ther'll end up being a "KoH" Extended/Director's Cut in the near future.

As for "Serenity", 12/20/05 looks to be the most popular guesstimate.

Sweet - I didn't know Arrested Development Season 2 hit today!  My fav show on prime time!

Next Tuesday is a huge day for me - Batman Begins and The Big Lebowski SE - anyone know if the Big Lebowski SE will feature more than the old release?

The picture and sound actually hold up on the old release...

You may want to check your info.  They had put this out early at my BJ's Warehouse this past weekend and the back did not mention extra footage.  It was the same 118 min as the first release.  Unless they are releasing two versions or the extra footage is an easter egg.

Not double dipping on this one, I'm happy with the first release.

A question about the Nightmare on Elm Street Boxed Set.

I have all the older DVD's (the red ones)... I'm wondering if there is anything different content wise about the nicer boxed set - I'm thinking about buying it and trading in my red versions - but only if there's a reasonable difference.

I haven't had a chance to watch any of mine yet, but aside from the awesome box, it does come with some 3-D glasses for Freddy's Dead #6, plus a booklet expaining every movie as well as an 8th disc titled "The Nightmare Series Encyclopedia" filled with bonus stuff including Docs, Trailers, interviews with all seven directors, MTV appearance, and and interactive Freddy for your DVD-ROM.

There's some special DVD-ROM trivia games entitled Dream World on every disc, but I'm not sure if the feature was on the originals or not.  All my discs say that they're remixed in 5.1 if that makes any difference.  Aside from that - there doesn't appear to be any additional content.

Back to the Big Lebowski DVD.

The older edition I've got says 1 hour 38 minutes on the box.

Amazon.com says the new DVD is 118 minutes.

That's a 20 minute difference - anyone know if this is confirmed?  I'd think they'd be advertising this heavily if it was an extended edition, but I can't find any real reference to it.

There is still a debate on whether it is a "free" disc or not...   :-\

For Example at Wal-Mart.com:

The Widescreen Ep 3 = $15.87
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4127388

The Widescreen Ep3 DVD with 2nd Disc = $20.87
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4242488

We will have to wait and see if Wal-Mart is going to offer the 2-disc set for the $16 price in stores on Nov 1st.  No one has received any solid confirmation one way or the other yet.

Need help with two picks.  First.  Batman Begins single disc or 2-disc set.  Does the double disc with the extras have any thing good on it?  The single disc is bare bones with the film and thats it.  Also the unrated Saw disc.  It looks like only a couple of extra minutes.  Is that it or is it a different cut?  Im assuming, spoilers who have not seen it.............................................................................

Supposedly the scene at the end where Cary Elwes just saws through his leg is more graphic.  Can anyone confirm that is the only difference.  If so a pass for me.  Great flick.  Although the sequel looks disappointing with the been there done that type of thing.

That's my impression - the cut is only a minute longer.

If you get it at Best Buy, it does have a free ticket to see Saw II included - which makes the whole thing a pretty good value IMO.

Not quite, but you're very, very close.

It looks to be something hosted by the droids, which tells the story of Anakin and Luke.  This may have been something which aired on Fox around the time that Clones came out in theatres.

And word has it (although this may just be wishful thinking) that Best Buy's giveaway will be a Prequel Trilogy slipcase, to match the Original Trilogy slipcase.  That would be similar to what they did with Kill Bill, Volume 2 last year.

We'll know for sure in about a week's time. . .

Hmmm, that'd be interesting. It'd give me one less reason to buy a box set until the "final" editions come out in 6-pack. But I though Best Buy was doing the Unleashed Vader? Which I'm assuming, of course, isn't free.

Its got some cool special features, including an exclusive introduction, behind the scenes, and photos taken by Jeff Bridges during the production. Boy, I don't know Rob - if it did indeed have the extra footage, they would've called it out on the package art.  It'd be the only redeeming feature of the DVD.  I'm a huge fan of the movie and I'm passing.

My vote would be no to the extended version.  In regards to the running time, could be a typo.

Or you could just watch the movie to see if anything is new!   8)

I'd have been able to confirm the run time of Big Lebowski since I sat down to watch it last night, but...

For god's sake, I bought the Pan&Scan version from Target.  >:( It’s in red type against the black background at the bottom of the box, I was in a hurry, and honestly I didn’t even know they had bothered with a cropped version of the movie.

What really sucks is I opened it up, ran it, and didn't realize it until the "modified for television screens' message appeared. Imagine my horror since this was the first movie I'd sat down to watch on the projector/screen since my move -- I'd just finished the day-long project of getting the screen back up in the new place, and The Dude was to be my inaugural viewing.

So I still don’t know if anything has changed, but there has been zero discussion of additions, as I mentioned. Nothing. It has to be a typo.

I made the same mistake when I bought Attack of the Clones.  It wasn't until that dreaded "modified for television screens" message showed on the screen that I realized my stupid move.  It's for this reason that I just may wait for a Prequel Trilogy boxset to come out before I actually get ROTS.   ::)

Have never accidentally bought a non-OAR disc, but if I did, there'd be no way in hell I'd just say "oh well, them's the breaks."  I'd be back at the store in a heartbeat to get the proper version.

I only mistakenly bought foolscreen twice - American Pie and Oceans 11.  Didn't realize on AP until after I opened it.  I figured, what the hell, it's already opened, I'll watch it anyway.  Took it back to Best Buy the next day and exchanged it (with a little hassle, but nothing major).

For Ocean's 11, I traded my foolscreen for my sister's widescreen.  She "mistakenly" bought ws, decided she hated the black bars  ::), so it was an easy trade.  I tried to educate her, but she didn't want to listen.

I still dont understand why they even make fullscreen.  Especially with what the future holds.  I still have people argue with me that widescreen detracts from the experience and you get less of a movie, when its actually the opposite.  In about 10 years when the whole media experience has changed over to HD and WS viewing alot of people are going to feel like such tools for having them in the first place.

Anyone pick up the new version of The Outsiders last month? Coppola released The Outsiders - The Complete Novel (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000A0GOE6/qid=1129919641/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-9901819-1351801?v=glance&s=dvd), a 2-disc set with 22 minutes of original footage edited back into the movie. It's got a whole new rock 'n' roll soundtrack, too, where before it had more orchestral music. It's got a lot of great extras, too: a documentary; interviews with Coppola, cast and the author of the novel; an old Today Show report about how a highschool class wrote to petition Coppola to make a movie because they enjoyed the book so much. It's a really great release. The movie really benefits from the cut footage being reintegrated.

Simply forward the following story to those folks, and problem solved.

Non-Widescreen Version Of DVD Received As Hanukkah Gift (http://www.theonion.com/content/node/30231)

BROOKLYN, NY—Self-described film buff Tyler Rosenstein was disappointed to receive a non-letterboxed “full screen” version of the movie The Matrix Reloaded as a Hanukkah gift, the 19-year-old reported Monday.

“Great,” said Rosenstein, concealing his displeasure from his beaming aunt and uncle, Hannah and Bernie Greenberg, as he gazed at the freshly unwrapped DVD in his hand. “Just what I wanted. The Matrix Reloaded.”

“With approximately a third of the movie’s visual content missing, thanks to ‘pan-and-scan,’” he added under his breath.

Rosenstein, a freshman studying philosophy at NYU, said he was momentarily excited to receive the special collector’s edition DVD of The Matrix Reloaded, which features more than an hour of supplemental material, including behind-the-scenes footage and a preview of the Enter The Matrix video game. But Rosenstein’s joy faded when his eye caught the words “full-screen edition” emblazoned across the top of the box.

Minutes later, Rosenstein’s cousin Cory made an exchange of the gift impossible when he insisted that Rosenstein open the DVD to show him the “easter egg.”

While Rosenstein thanked his aunt and uncle for the gift, he took leave of the family get-together shortly after dinner and locked himself in his room to sulk.

“It’s frustrating, because they came so close to getting me exactly what I wanted,” said Rosenstein, lying on his bed and sneering at the DVD. “This is a $30 item. But what am I supposed to do with it? Why would they even release a full-screen Matrix Reloaded, when every single frame of that movie is so artfully composed? Even leaving framing aside, the movie cries out for each of its visual elements to be seen.”

“It’s an unwatchable piece of crap,” said Rosenstein, tossing the DVD onto a pile of gifts that included a sweatshirt and a digital memo recorder.

In spite of his annoyance with the non-letterboxed DVD, Rosenstein said he knew better than to complain to his relatives.

“There’s just no way to tell them without coming off like a complete *******,” Rosenstein said. “I’m just going to have to eat it.”

The Greenbergs remain unaware of their mistake.

“We’re so happy that we were able to get Tyler a gift he really wanted this year,” Hannah Greenberg said. “You wouldn’t believe how hard he is to shop for. He’s so picky about his movies. For his birthday, we gave him The Wedding Singer. I thought all the kids liked that Adam Sandler—Cory said he sings a song about Hanukkah. Well, boy, was getting Tyler that movie a mistake!”

This year, instead of guessing, the Greenbergs took a suggestion from Rosenstein’s father, who was aware that his son owned the first Matrix movie.

“Tyler’s got very specific tastes,” Bernie said. “He told us he likes those foreign films. What did he call it? The Criterion Collection. Well, Hannah and I tried to find those, but they didn’t have them at Target. We sure didn’t want what happened with the wizard movie to happen again.”

Bernie spoke in reference to last year, when the Greenbergs came close to finding a gift Rosenstein would like. The misguided couple gave their nephew the theatrical-release version of Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring, instead of the extended version which contains 40 extra minutes of footage—a distinction Rosenstein gently explained to the confused gift-givers.

“If we’d known, we’d have been happy to get him the other version,” Hannah said. “Well, this time we were very careful. There were two versions at the store, and we made sure to get the special one. See, Tyler hates it when they cut out part of the movie.”

Confusion over the misleading term “full-screen” caused his well-meaning relatives to purchase the inferior version of the DVD.

“Why do they call it ‘full-screen’ anyway, when it’s only two-thirds of the stupid movie?” Rosenstein asked. “******* bull**** aspect ratio!”

As of press time, Rosenstein had not decided what to do with the DVD.

“I can’t trade it to any of my friends,” Rosenstein said. “They’d just roll their eyes when they saw it wasn’t letterboxed. Basically, I’m screwed. I’m stuck with a product that has no reason to exist.”

“I suppose I could just throw it away,” Rosenstein continued. “But what if Aunt Hannah or Uncle Bernie asked about it? I’ll probably have to just keep this horrible thing on my shelf. I’m trapped, like Neo and the other warriors of Zion, in a fictitious world I never chose to be a part of: an imaginary alternate universe where non-widescreen DVDs are remotely tolerable.”

Walmarts prices are so varied in my area.  I have 2 Walmarts within 5-8 miles of me and 1 charges 14.99 for all new releases as opposed to 19.99 for al new releases.  Its such a huge difference I cant believe the one store even sells any, but they do.  We just had a Target open up a few months back in our area the the prices there for DVD's is insulting as well.  Never any thing remotely cheap on new releases.  Strange since a Circuit City is rignt down the street and there prices are usually cheap on new releases.

Wishful thinking, indeed.

Looks like Best Buy's freebie is just gonna be a Darth Vader lithograph for Reward Zone members.

That "litho" is garbage, IMO. It's not even movie specific, more pop art than anything, which has me leaning towards spending a whopping $4 on an exclusive bonus disc.

Re: Best Buy and Wal Mart prices. I don't understand why they'll (WM) price match one new release, and not the other, both equally as "major" in relation to their theatrical release, while not necessarily popularity. Best Buy's Reward Zone offers vary from region to region as well, i.e. 2 Disk Wizard of Oz for $12.99 in some, $16.99 in others.

Doesn't really matter to me, since I'm opting for the 3 disc, but still.

I was hoping to pick up Batman Begins last Tuesday, but our closest Wal-Mart was charging $25 for the Deluxe edition.  I figured I'd wait until I went to Target or Best Buy, and check their prices.  Well, after checking two Wal-Marts, two Targets, and a Best Buy, every single store was sold out of that version this weekend...although, they were swimming in the single disc edition.  I'm kind of surprised they did a release like that, it seems like the 2-disc sets are becoming more of a standard lately...especially for "big" movies like that.  Anyways, I'm checking to see if Target restocks this week (they were charging 19.99), otherwise its off to Amazon I go :).  I think that's the first time I haven't been able to find a DVD I was looking for in its release week...they must have severely underordered the deluxe versions or something.

It looks to be something hosted by the droids, which tells the story of Anakin and Luke.  This may have been something which aired on Fox around the time that Clones came out in theatres.

"Walmart Exclusive Bonus Disc Includes: The Skywalker family is at the heart of the Star Wars saga. Now hear the inside story of Luke and Anakin Skywalker from the characters who witnessed it all: the famous droid duo C-3PO and R2-D2! Episodes IV, V and VI are explored in "The Story Of Luke Skywalker," which follows the young man escaping from his daily chores on Tatooine to his becoming a hero in the Rebel Alliance. In "The Story Of Anakin Skywalker," you'll go behind the mask of the greatest Star Wars villain and discover how Darth Vader started life as a young Podracing champion on Tatooine and later became a headstrong young Jedi seduced by the dark side of the Force. With clips from the Star Wars films, C-3PO and R2-D2 take you on an hour long journey through the saga and prepare you for the explosive final chapter: "Star Wars: Episode III Revenge Of The Sith."

I ordered both off of Amazon. It's either Amazon or DeepDiscount, virtually the same price, same delivery time, free shipping, etc.

Best Buy is pretty good about carrying Blue Underground releases, i.e. Zombi 2 Ann. Edition, but for some reason, I don't forsee "Cannibal Holocaust" being a title they'll be enthusiastically pushing.

It's limited to either 10,000 or 11,111 copies nationwide. I've heard both, and given its history and availability, I'm thinking they'll go pretty fast.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if the Batman Begins Deluxe DVD was limited in some way?  I'm starting to think so after this week.  I ran to our closest Wal-Mart last Tuesday morning to pick it up, but they were charging $25 for it...and at the time Amazon had it for $16ish, so I passed.  I thought I'd wait and see what price Target had, since they usually have good sales the first week of release.  Over the course of last week, and this past weekend, I checked all our Targets, the other Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc. and all were sold out.  So, I go to Amazon yesterday to order it, and right as I'm getting ready to check out they move it to my "save for later" because it is no longer available.  So, I head to various online sites (Walmart.com, Target.com, BestBuy.com, CircuitCity.com, DeepDiscountDVD.com, DVDEmpire.com, etc.) and all are out of stock.  Anyways.....long story short, it doesn't seem to be in large supply anywhere.  I usually enjoy the special features type things, but I'm leaning towards picking up the "regular" version just to see the movie again if the deluxe version isn't available for quite some time.  I know there are some nice extras on the Deluxe version (plus a comic)....is it anything spectacular that I shouldn't miss?  Would I really be missing out if I can't find the Deluxe edition and just pick up a regular release?  Just curious if anyone could offer some advice.  I still don't see why they did it this way, instead of just releasing the 2 disc set as the "regular release" like Star Wars and almost all other movies do.

Yeah - 11,111 - an odd number, but that's what they said on the back. The transfer on this version is so sweet... but it kinda ruins the feel of the film. I almost prefer my older, grainy version - it just gives it a more realistic feel. Kinda like the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if the Batman Begins Deluxe DVD was limited in some way?

It's either that or some sort of production run problem. I ordered 25 copies for my store, and when we sold the last one the other day I called all 3 of my distributors and not a single piece was to be found. I would find it hard to believe that a title like that from a company like WB would have a finite print run without any kind of announcement about numbers, so I'm guessing there will be more available at some point.

The same thing happened with the Spider-Man 2 Deluxe Edition as well as the Scarface Deluxe. Once I ran out of those it was almost a month before any of my distributors had any back in stock. They told me there was a production problem with something in the set, and sure enough a few weeks later they were back on the shelf. If you're that nervous about it though, there are several people selling it on ebay with a BIN of $16.99, like this guy here (http://cgi.ebay.com/Batman-Begins-2005-DVD-Two-Disc-Deluxe-Edition-NEW_W0QQitemZ6446234185QQcategoryZ617QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem).

Regarding BB deluxe edition, I think it's a rights issue with the comic that came with it.  You can try Borders, Tower Records or the like instead of the bigger stores like WM, Best Buy and Target.  Of course, you'll probably pay more, but it might be worth it in the long run, especially when the scalpers entrepreneurs start grabbing these up and selling them on ebay as "OMG!!!1!! Super-rare OOP Batman Begins deluxe DVD.  HTF!!!!1!"

The Best Buy Deluxe Edition is already fetching around $35. That's typical with Best Buy exclusives, because Non-US bidders scour eBay for their bonus discs and exclusives. Anyone buying up $25 dollar sets for an ultimate $10 profit are just plain stupid, as are anyone that buy things that are still in production, looking to turn a profit.

Next week's prices for Revenge of the Sith are starting to leak out:

Best Buy:  $??.?? ($14.99) with exclusive Darth Vader lithograph for Reward Zone members

Circuit:  $??.?? ($14.99)

Suncoast:  Price unknown, but with exclusive patch

Target:  $??.?? ($14.99) with exclusive Darth Vader coin

Wal-Mart:  $??.??, with exclusive bonus disc  (Wal-Mart's prices are all over the place, nationwide, so there's really no telling what your local store will be selling it for.  I would guess that most stores will be selling the version without the disc for around $15 or so, to be competitive with other stores.  But the version with the bonus-disc pack-in is a whole 'nother story.  I would assume that those will be selling for about $5 more than the regular copies.  But ultimately, the only way to know for sure is to go to your local store and run them under the price-scanner.  Either way, if you want the widescreen version and the bonus disc, I'd hit up your Wal-Mart as soon as possible, because who knows how many copies they'll get, and the widescreen w/bonus disc sets are sure to go fast, and first. . .)

No word yet on the track-listing.

Or you could just--I don't know--give the extra one away as a Hanukkah present or something.  That's what I'd do, if I knew any Jewish Star Wars fans.

But I don't, so that won't be happening.  But it won't be happening anyway, because that lithograph holds no appeal to me.  Nor do any other lithographs, really.  I just think they're all kind of dumb.  Don't get me wrong--if there were no other "freebies" at any other retailers, I'd take the litho.  But I wouldn't do anything with it, other than throw it in with the rest of the Star Wars junk I've accumulated over the past fifteen years.

Wal-Mart gets my business next week.

There was a poster in the entry way of my local Wal-Mart earlier this week advertising the bonus disc.

The poster made it sound like the disc would be FREE with purchase if you were there on November 1st.  Don't know if it's a local promo or national.  I can never tell with Wal-Mart since it really seems to vary region by region on things like DVDs.

That's true, their pricing is not national - one will sell Batman Begins for $15 while the other will it for $20.

All I know is what I found on their site:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=4127388

And usually their site reflects their "sale price" stores.

Just got off the phone with Best Buy Buddy, who told me that they just got in a bunch of *new* Deluxe versions sans the mini-comic (and the cardboard casing which the whole set came in).  Now it's just in a regular two-disc keepcase.

So, if you're wanting the Deluxe edition, but don't care about the comic, you might start checking your local stores. . .

Side note, that the Walmart in my area had a display with about 30-40 different titles for 4.88.  Some good stuff available.

Anyone check out Exorcist Dominion?  Wondering if it is any better than the other prequel that was released.

OK, so I was off by a couple years, but I believe the first DVD player hit the market in 1996.

1996 in Japan, 1997 in the US. First actual DVD's were 4 IMAX films, as if anyone bought those.

Just got off the phone with Best Buy Buddy, who told me that they just got in a bunch of *new* Deluxe versions sans the mini-comic (and the cardboard casing which the whole set came in).  Now it's just in a regular two-disc keepcase.

There's been some weird reports that there was some supposed middle wave of "comic-ed" Deluxe sets with a "rights/credits correction" slip in the back of the comic itself.
Either way...

Anyone check out Exorcist Dominion?  Wondering if it is any better than the other prequel that was released.

"The Beginning" was originally Paul Schrader's film. Then, once they hired Renny Harlin to re-shoot some scenes, they ended up allowing his to reshoot the entire film, which ended up being a contrived mess. I've heard much more positive reviews for "Dominion", having been a coherent and intriguing story, unlike what was actually released. It confuses a good many people that come into my work, asking the same thing.

That's too bad, then, because while the deleted scenes and alternate ending are separate, it's still a fantastic package for anyone who considers themselves a fan of the film.  It's got a gorgeous new anamorphic transfer, a great DTS track, three separate commentaries, and much, much more.  It's easily the best the movie's looked and sounded since it was out in theatres.  And the eighteen bones it can be had for this week is a bargain.

I figured I'd share my DVDTalk post regarding the whole Batman fiasco;

Quote
Discontinuation of the Deluxe Editions w/ comic book is the fear here, not necessarily the discs themselves going OOP. I've read a few things now, concerning MULTIPLE editions of the DVD itself.

1) 2 Disc SE w/ Comic - Incorrect Credits
2) 2 Disc SE w/ Comic - Incorrect Credits w/ Correction Slip
3) 2 Disc SE w/ Comic - Incorrect Credits & BB Exc. Cover
4) 2 Disc SE w/ Comic - Incorrect Credits w/ Correction Slip & BB Exc. Cover
5) 2 Disc SE w/o Comic & w/o Slipcase/Slipcover

I'd assume all releases with comic books have been halted indefinately in lieu of a 2 Disc SE in a gateway. That would suggest that the sets with comic books are the most desirable, especially those with the white correction slip, as well as the lenticular slipcased Best Buy editions.

If ANYONE can vouch that ANY of these exist, it would really clear things up. Has anyone purchased a Best Buy lenticular covered edition WITH the corrected credits? Given the gimmick cover was a first run promotion, I'd assume they all have the incorrect credits, and possibly the slip, unless the error wasn't caught until after initial shipments were made.

I got the deluxe BB w/ incorrect comic and correction slip (#2 on the list) from Amazon.

I'm starting to believe the set was never issued with just the incorrectly credited comic. Just the error w/ slip, and the corrected version. the first one I bought the day it was released was corrected, and wasn't from Best Buy. I figured that since Best Buy had a limited promotion with the slipcase, perhaps their orders will filled first, because of the special handling w/ the lenticular covers, thus getting the first batch of error comics.

Eh, **** 'em, I say.  You like it, you like it.

I like it, and never really knew how much I did until I was going through the new set this week, and realized exactly how much time and money I've spent on Titanic:

Two theatrical viewings
Both CD soundtracks
Widescreen VHS
First DVD
New DVD

And what I've watched on the new DVD:

Movie x4 (by itself, and with all three commentaries)
Alternate ending x2 (above)
Deleted scenes x2 (above)
All the "pods" (mini-docs)
All the other, video-based features

Basically, I've gone through everything except things like the still galleries and original script (482 pages!) and all that.  Even watched the Celine Dion video, for Christ's sake.

So, I guess I really like it.  It's a great flick.  Not a perfect film, by any means, but nowhere near as bad as some people would like to believe.  And considering this is a forum populated with folks who paid to see Phantom Menace multiple times, and bought the same Cantina Han Solo figure several times over, I don't think there's anything to be ashamed about in liking Titanic.

I like to look at the Sci-Fi DVD's in FutureShop but now they have removed that section and mixed them up with the other DVD's so that make it hard to find some stuff. Was a lot better all in one place.  :-\

Thanks for that info, I appreciate it.  I went around looking for the deluxe set this past weekend, and the only place that had it was Barnes and Noble...but it was $32.  I just couldn't justify paying $10-$15 more for the "extras", so I passed and picked up the cheaper single disc version for now.  Once the deluxe set starts hitting retail again (as it sounds it is now), I'll probably end up picking it up too.  I just want to see the Batmobile feature, etc.  I guess I have two versions of each of the LOTR movies, not too mention all the Star Wars we've bought over the years, so what's one more?  We'll see, but glad to hear it is heading to retail again.  Thanks again.

Re: Office Space Gift Set

For $23, it's loaded.

Yeah, loaded with a bunch of useless junk.  I'll get the gift set, 'cause I'm a sucker for things like that, but the disc itself is a major disappointment.  Where's the commentary?  Where are the Milton shorts?  It's nice to finally have an anamorphic transfer of this, and the extras that are on there are nice, but considering the following this film has, this disc is a disappointment.

Yeah, but with LOTR and Star Wars, there were enough differences in the films to warrant owning the different releases.  With this, the films are exactly the same, so you'd be paying $25+ just for the extras.  I went through all the extras on disc two last night, and was really underwhelmed.  It's mostly just ten or twelve mini-featurettes, all less than fifteen minutes long each, without any kind of a "play all" function.  The way they're arranged on the disc is annoying (it's like a comic book, you've got to play around with the remote, going from page to page, trying to find things to click on).  And the featurettes are in widescreen, but non-anamorphic, which is annoying if you've got a 16x9 display.  And the lack of commentary or deleted scenes almost suggests that a better version might be coming, on down the line.

My suggestion would be to save yourself the cash, and just rent or borrow the Deluxe Edition.  You could get through all the extras in just two or three hours.  Unless you're a Bat-fanatic, and have to own everything, of course. . .

Thanks for the advice, that is something I've been thinking about doing too.  I couldn't bring myself to by the copy of the Deluxe version at Barnes and Noble for $32 because I didn't think the special features were worth $15 more to me, which is why re-buying it would seem silly too I guess.  I wouldn't mind seeing them, but maybe I'll just rent it like you mentioned to see them.  The fact that you say you were a little underwhelmed helps me not to worry that I'm missing too terribly much too.  The movie is the most important thing to have, and I've got that at least.  Like I said earlier, I still don't see (aside from the obvious "it makes us more money" standpoint) why they did seperate releases like this, where most major movies (for example: ROTS tomorrow) just have the two disc set as their normal release.  Anyways, thanks again for the info/advice.

This wasn't the first time a studio's released two different versions of a flick on the same day.  THX-1138 and Life Aquatic come to mind, and I know there've been a bunch more--and I think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will be another one, next week.

I don't know that there's a real "reason" for it, other than they just want to test the viability of separate releases, and to see just how much more people would be willing to spend for bonus features.

It's an interesting strategy, but I don't like it, and hope it doesn't continue.  I didn't mind too much this time, because I was able to snag the Deluxe for about $16 (same as I would have paid for the single disc), but who's to say that there won't be some other situation where the deluxe version of a film is $25 or $30, or even more.

And it could have been worse--they could have released the single-disc now, got everybody to buy it, and then sprung the Deluxe set on everybody afterward.  In that sense, this was kind of nice, as it was everyone's choice as to which version they bought.

That's a great point.  Its not that I'm complaining, because I should have just bought the Deluxe version when I saw it at Wal-Mart for $25.  At the time it was going for $16 on Amazon, so I figured it should be closer to that price at retail.  I was wrong, and I missed my chance.  No big deal I guess.  Like you mentioned, I was looking on Amazon and it looks like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and War of the Worlds are both doing the same thing.  Single disc releases and "Deluxe" versions.  I'm not a big fan of this trend either, because while I really do enjoy the extras on discs like these, I'm not sure how much more I want to pay for them.  $20 maybe, $25-$30 might be pushing it for me.

I'm bowing out of the box for this, the same as I did on Lebowski. I'd prefer extra content on the discs themselves. When there's nothing in the set that isn't directly related to the movie, I've decided I don't need it.

I need a Lebowski coasters as much as I needed Showgirls shot glasses. I just don't get much enjoyment out of that stuff.

Theatrical cut.  Deleted scenes are separate.

Good thing, too--that movie really loses steam halfway through, when the money-laundering scheme kicks in.  Doesn't need to be any longer than it already is.

Bear with me, folks, I'm gonna respond to a bunch of random **** here:

So, has anyone swung by Wal Mart lately and stumble across "Fletch" for $4.88? I've had my copy for a while, got it cheap, but wouldn't mind a minty fresh one.

Found one last night while picking up Star Wars.  Then I rushed right out this morning to put it in my safety deposit box.  Twenty years from now, I'm gonna use it to put my kids through school.

---

Re: Begins Deluxe

Found some of the Deluxe sets sans slipcase and mini-comic today at a Best Buy while picking up. . .

---

Re: Office Space: Two Chicks at the Same Time Edition

But an Anamorphic transfer..which is why I'm biting.

Right, and it's the main reason I'm biting, too, but he was asking what cut of the movie was on the disc.

---

Star Wars:

Those of you planning on getting the bonus disc two-pack at Wal-Mart may want to pick up some Goo Gone while you're at it.  The boneheads put the sticker advertising the bonus disc directly on the bonus disc keepcase, and the bonus disc isn't shrink-wrapped, so unless you're really careful, you'll get sticker residue all over the front of the bonus disc.

---

Star Wars DVD stuff:

Those looking for the new, Episode I CGI Yoda footage, check out the "Chosen One" featurette in the documentaries section on Disc 2.  It's about five minutes in, just a quick clip of the "fear leads to anger" speech.  Looks good.  Definitely a nice little "Episode I SE is coming" bone for us fans.

Dancing Yoda is funny, I guess, but still not as good as a gag reel.

---

And the nominee for most-misleading product of 2005 is. . .

Target will also apparently be getting an exclusive, two-disc CD package, featuring the "best music of the entire Saga," for $14.99.

No word yet on the track-listing.

I was thinking about making my own two-disc set, with the first disc being Prequel music, and original music on the second.  If this set is done that way, I'll probably pick that up instead.

Went to one Target this morning to check out this CD, and just saw a bunch of Sith soundtracks where this new set was supposed to be.  Went to another Target, saw the same thing, and thought that was odd, so I picked one up and saw that this "exclusive" CD was just shrink-wrapped to the back of the regular CD.  No track-listing or anything, just a sticker that said something to the effect of "over 50 minutes of the best music of the Saga."

Pretty lame stuff.  I was kind of glad I didn't "have" to buy it, but would have liked to see a nice two-disc set with one disc prequel music and the other disc original music, with new packaging and all that.  Guess I'll have to make my own after all.

Still though, it's the Sith soundtrack, the Musical Journey DVD, and the best-of CD, all for about fifteen bucks or so.  Great deal if you don't already have the soundtrack.

Title: Re: 2005 DVD Thread
Post by: Matt on November 1, 2005, 01:20 PM
Nope.  That bonus disc sucks.  Doesn't suck as much as a lithograph or coin, but it's still pretty lame.

It's basically Artoo and Threepio, on a goofy, generic sci-fi set, with Threepio narrating along to various pan-and-scan clips from the films.  About thirty minutes for Episodes I and II, and about thirty minutes for IV, V, and VI.  This was done before Sith, so there's no Sith footage at all.

It's one of those things that you'd watch once (if you could get through it all--I couldn't), and put on your shelf, never to watch again.

With out giving too much public details on where this info comes from, I know why this special edition came out the way it did.

Basically, if it's not common knowledge, Judge has a really bad taste is his mouth from working with Fox and was doing everything in his power to undermine what they wanted. The Milton shorts are not included because he never liked them in the first place and he just plain refused to do a commentary because, well,  Fox wanted one.

I disagree, I think the featurette on showing Anakin-Vader is well worth it to see how horrible Lucas is at directing.  Please tell me those conversations with Hayden were entirely staged.  What an utter lack of passion and communication.  If that's actual footage I gained a lot of respect for Hayden's ability to act (without direction).

Alls you need to do is view "Life as a House". It's no secret that George Lucas ruins otherwise fantastic actors with his direction and poor dialogue.

Sigh.

I'm not trying to thread crap, but it is any wonder that the most popular of the 6 movies wasn't directed by Lucas himself? "Life As a House" is to Hayden Christensen what "Garden State" or "Leon" was to Natalie Portman. Underrated, and a great showcase of his talents.

This may be a bit OT, but here it goes anyway.

To those of you that have seen/own Cannibal Holocaust, where do you think I would be able to rent or view it at? I'm guessing Best Buy and Blockbuster aren't going to have this. Now I know what I'm getting myself into, I've read dozens of reviews on it, and I want to see if it is hype or if there is actually anything behind the movie other than what it seems to be on the outside. I'm NOT looking to buy this movie at all, just watch it once.

Also, I was looking over some other lists on some other sites, and looking at the most disturbing movies of all time, and was wondering what you guys thought shoudl be on the list. Thanks!

You're only hope of a rental is probably going to be a mom and pop store, but the way this thing seems to have such a cult following, you should have no problem flipping it away on ebay if you have to buy it.

netflix seems to always have an exhaustive library though.  You could take a look there, too.

There's a lot of mixed feelings towards the set, given the whole "Director's Cut" episodes, where Judge actually has removed footage from the episodes. I don't care, personally. Those with the Time Life set can compare for yourself.

Fact of the matter is, this set has all the extras that came with the "History of Beavis and Butthead" set, which is $75 on eBay alone. It also has 11 music videos, great extras, and a very informative documentary.

Re: Office Space SE

With out giving too much public details on where this info comes from, I know why this special edition came out the way it did.

Basically, if it's not common knowledge, Judge has a really bad taste is his mouth from working with Fox and was doing everything in his power to undermine what they wanted. The Milton shorts are not included because he never liked them in the first place and he just plain refused to do a commentary because, well,  Fox wanted one.

Just came across an old Entertainment Weekly article about Mike Judge, Office Space, and Fox.  I'll put a couple of relevant quotes here, and put the whole article in the Office Space thread.

Quote
Fox is now anxious to release a special-edition DVD with extras like the original ''Milton'' shorts, but Judge says the studio wants to stiff him on the deal, so he won't sign off. Rather tactfully, all a studio spokesperson will say is that ''discussions are ongoing.''

Quote
Mike Judge takes deep pleasure in his movie's resurrection, but he still can't bring himself to watch the damn thing. ''I was channel-flipping once and Office Space was on,'' he says. ''I watched it for like a minute and a half. I was like, 'Yeah, I don't want to go through this again.' So I shut it off.''

Watched the retrospective on the new DVD last week, and saw a couple of clips from the Milton shorts.  What a nice little slap in the face that was.

I was thinking about picking up Charlie and the Chocolate Factory this week as well, but I'm undecided.  This was a movie we never got a chance to get to while it was in the theatres, so we thought about renting it first to see if it was worth buying.  Sometimes it is tempting to save the $4-5 rental, and just blind buy it, but we'll see.  Any opinions on the movie if you saw it this summer?

My wife preferred the original over the new one, but both she and my daughter enjoyed the more recent release.  I'm guessing we'll own both.  Blockbuster up here has dropped there recently-viewed purchase price to only $6.99 CAD.  Rental price is around $5 and change, so we just wait now.

I watched it from the website, well, the majority of it. No worse than "Starwoids", really, but not something I'd want to own. It's somewhat of an embarassment to watch to be frank.

Any opinions on the movie if you saw it this summer?

One of the worst movies I've ever seen, personally, and I've seen a lot. I personally don't care if Burton's invisioning was closer to the book, I just thought it was a bad movie. From Johnny Depp's uncomfortable portrayal, to the Oompa Loompa's gaudy, multi-colored plastic suits, to the ridiculous kiddie hip hop musical numbers.

Great for kids, or those who read the book, but I'll never subject myself to it ever again. Even if it were as "dark" as the cliched reviews said, it wouldn't have kept my attention, as drawn to the macabre as I am. Burton hasn't been the same since his POTA remake. I mean even "Corpse Bride" was disappointing.

I'm going to have to agree with you there Rob. Deep Roy went up about a thoushand points in my book for pulling those off so well.

I just bought the DVD today, it's going to be great to sit down and enjoy it with my wife and Daughters.

The thing about the movie that surprised me, having never read the book, is that after sitting though the first 80 minutes wondering about Depp's performance and Burton's take on the character, it pays off for me in the closing scenes. The character was a bit of a goof, but in the end Charlie was able to reach him and change him. I like that in a movie, no matter how cliche.

I would hardly be cautious with this site or their sister site deepdiscountcd.com  I have been ordering for years and you usually cant beat the deals, specials and promos they run.  If you cant wait for a title buy locally.  The free shipping is just a bonus in my book.  I average about 4-5 DVD's a month and they all average 7-10 days shipping so no worries on being stiffed.  Ive had one error in the hundreds of dealings and they more than made up for the mistake.

Well, I'm happy that you guys are satisfied with them.  But jeez, Batman came out, what, almost a month ago?  I ordered it the day after it was released.

They told me to wait until the 11th, and then contact them if I still don't have it.  They should offer me a coupon or something to keep me as a customer.

As well, it looks like the Deluxe Edition was pulled from their site.  With my luck, my replacement will be the bare bones edition and I'll have to pull teeth to get that remedied.

Just had to give some praise to the Devils Rejects.  House of 1000 Corpses was okay but this surpassed my expectations.  Spoilers beware ...............................

I hate to say it, but I was really rooting for the Firefly Clan at the end of the film.  I'll miss them, but its nice that he wont cheese out with a ton of sequels. Rob Zombie definitely brings back some nostalgia to 70's horror flicks.  Looking forward to what he comes up with next.  Also finally picked up the Directors Cut of Pink Floyd Live at Pompei.  Nick Mason IMO was so ahead of his time.  It has both cuts of the film and I recommend it.  The recording sessions of the DSOTM are pretty cool and some cools riffs were left on the cutting room floor.  Although I was expecting a bit more with the extras.

I'd agree about Devil's Rejects - House of 1000 Corpses was okay and all, but Devil's Rejects felt like a real movie and had some pretty good stuff in it.    I'd been avoiding buying House of 1000 Corpses hoping that a director's cut would come out, but apparently all the extra footage is lost and Best Buy did a 2 for $20 on the Rob Zombie movies this week, so I bit.

By the way, the door is wide open for a prequel even if they did kill off the family at the end.

Any "Black Friday" scores? I got Doom 3 on XBox for $9.99 at CC, but missed Target's $18.99 MOH: EA. They were out of "Anchorman", not that I needed it, and were offering something called an "instant raincheck", where you could get a select (title named on card) new release for a $0.99 difference, so I got "The Skeleton Key" for $7.99 which I was ecstatic about.

Although we were Christmas shopping for others on Black Friday, we couldn't pass up a few of the DVD sales at Target while we were there.  Picked up the first Harry Potter movie (didn't have it yet) for $5.88, Family Guy Volume 2 for $17.88, and LOST: Season 1 for $30.00.  Some really nice deals on some box sets it seemed, and we picked up Simpsons: Season 6 for my brother for Christmas for $17.88 as well.  Not much up this week I don't think, although I'd like to pick up Family Guy: Volume 3...might have to wait on that after all the Christmas spending lately.

I picked up the 1933 King Kong yesterday and couldn't wait to watch it. I  think it's the first time I've seen it in more than twenty years.

Was also tempted to pick up the original War of the Worlds, but I have to let my familiy pick up something they know I want for christmas. ;)

I don't know if you have Fry's in your neck of the country, but I got mine at Best Buy - price matched with Fry's for $14.99

And it has a free ticket to King Kong in it - so it's a good deal.

That Jurassic Park boxed set is also $14.99 at Target, and it also has a free ticket to King Kong.  So now I don't even have to pay for the girlfriend.

Rented and watched "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" today, and enjoyed it, but I'm holding out for the two disc that's dropping early next year. As for the rest, bought "The Muppet Movie", "The Great Muppet Caper", "Sky High" and "March of the Penguins". "The Frighteners" isn't own worthy, IMO, and I got the old "Jurassic Park" Trilogy, with the bonus disc, for $15 a month or so ago.

I'll eventually get "King Kong vs Godzilla".

Clone Wars 2 and Fantastic Four.

I noticed FF at Target has a sticker that says a bonus exclusive dvd is incuded -- 15 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage and trailers. I'm not big on these store exclusive bonus footage (well, at least not a fan of paying $5  more for Walmart's bonus dvd even if it is 50 minutes of something or other), but since Walmart's barebones version is the same price as Target's w/ bonus dvd, I'll be returning Walmart's.
Title: Re: 2005 DVD Thread
Post by: Cory Chaos on December 7, 2005, 02:42 AM
The price really depends on the market. Some Wal Marts have the 2 disc for $13.97 er whatever wacky price. The Target bonus disc is really crappy, however.

Includes:

The Baxter Building: Declassified - 6 min, 45 sec
Fantastic Four: Comic Book to Film - 3 min, 50 sec
Trailers: Daredevil, Electra, X2, LxG

So, 10 minutes of features, and old trailers to mostly crappy comic book movies, as opposed to a 50 minute documentary on the making of the movie for anywhere from $0.00 to $4. It's all up to the buyer.

This is a general question for everyone:

What percentage of your DVD collection have you watched? (Keeping in mind multi-disc TV shows, and extras.)
Title: Re: 2005 DVD Thread

I grabbed these 3 yesterday...

What percentage of your DVD collection have you watched? (Keeping in mind multi-disc TV shows, and extras.)

About 90% of our collection has been watched at least once, about 50% has been watched multiple times (2-3), and about 25% has been watched over and over and over again (SW, LotR, Indy, Disney Animated, etc).

The only TV on DVD we have is Firefly and Alias (Seasons 1-4), and those are usually watched while walking on the treadmill (a good time for watching stuff like that since they are about ~45min per episode) otherwise I probably wouldn't sit down and just watch them the same way I'd pop in a movie to watch.

Thanks for the info. I actually bought the movie as a stocking stuffer for my nephews. My only interest with the movie -- and I'll have to wait until after Christmas to borrow it -- is in watching the parts with Jessica Alba.  :P

My point was more along the lines of gauging how successful or popular this program is for Walmart. I went to one Walmart today and saw a bin (mis?)marked $9.44 and filled with around 5 different types of bonus packs, including Million Dollar Baby and Troy. (ROTS was not one of the movies.) If this is widespread, it appears they'll have to refine the idea.

Best in Show is in the $5.00 bin. Bah! I paid like $15.00 for it over a year ago and still haven't opened it.  :)

I picked up Sin City, 40YO Virgin, and Airplane. I really debated the Peter Jackson King Kong Diaries set for a while. I just don't go for all that extra crap and just want the DVDs. I couldn't quite bring myself to get it. I might rethink on the ride home.

$30 for Sin City is ridiculous, and they're will most definately be a 2 disc "The Island", so I ain't going to fall for a barebones edition @ $17.

Got Death Race 2000 and Airplane, though. Came across Big Top Pee Wee in the death bin the other night, and copped the 2 disc Dinosaur. Wal Mart's throwing the OFOTCN 2 Disc SE in the $5 dollar bin? They're still selling it for $20 here....

I'm more amazed that One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest was in there.  That's a great price for a truly outstanding movie.

Yeah, I was really stoked about the $5 flicks.  They had these on a display next to the big dump bin that is the aisle outside of electronics in Walmart.  They had maybe 15-25 titles.  Others were T3, Mighty Wind, Gremlins, Empire Records, Superman, TMNT, a bunch of Bogart titles, Shining, Eyes Wide Shut, Caddyshack, etc.

Sin City is $26 in one of  the ads I've got here somewhere...  And it's a director's cut and there's a cheaper crappier option available - so the price is fair if you as me.

As for the Island, it's in one of the ads for $14.99 and I've got a $3.00 coupon that came with War of the Worlds - so forget $17.00, I,m paying $12.00

I'm probably going to hold off on buying The Shining, since that DVD has been out for a very long time... Perhaps a new double-disc is coming soon?

I knew it was too good to be true (OFOTCN). I may get "The Island" after all, at Wal Mart. There's a bonus (by definition, no implication that bonus equals free) disc with 21 minutes of features that may be as close as we get to a 2 disc set.

I watched "Serenity" this morning. It drops next Tuesday, and personally, I wasn't thrilled with it. I'm taking in "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" (Unrated Extended Edition) tonight, with "The Great Raid", "White Dragon", and "Cry Wolf (Unrated/Extended)" to follow.

When I got to Walmart today - the One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest DVD was NOT the two-disc edition.   They had lots of copies of the single disc though.

Anyone pick up the "King Kong" production diary set yet? Just curious if the actual content is worth the $33? The lithos and stuff are nice, but it kind of suggests that the eventual "King Kong" DVD will be some what bare, no?

Picked up "Dodgeball: Unrated" and "Office Space: With Flair" at Best Buy 2/$20, as well as "Empire Records" for $7.99. Day before, was able to get the 2 disc "Enter the Dragon" for $7 w/ a $5 RW certificate.

The production diaries is several hours worth of documentation - probably a bit much to include as a featurette.  It was online an episode at a time over the course of the last two years - there were something like 80 episodes.  It's an amazing series and worth the price IMO ($29.99 at lots of stores and Best Buy will price match - and if you bought Cinderella Man last week you probably have a $3.00 off coupon for the Diaries).

But since I've seen most of them and there was well over $100.00 worth of other stuff I wanted to pick up this week, I passed for now - I might pick it up at some point down the road.

I think that was a giveaway for rewardzone members (maybe for everybody) with Cinderella Man - that might have been where the $3.00 coupon for the Production Diaries came from.  I passed on Cinderella Man but my friend bought it and he has the booklet and got the coupon.

I've been losing interest in DVDs rapidly. I've been spending a lot of time grabbing HD movie streams off of cable and archiving them to a new media server that I built instead. It's hard to get excited about DVD when you can play back 1920x1080 HD files just as easily, if not more so. I have a feeling my collection is finally coming to rest and won't quite pick up again until Blu-Ray hits.

The only disc this week:

$20 at a local record store. It was yanked a few weeks after it was released, and went swiftly OOP, discontinued, recalled, all that jazz. Word has it that it's a "professional" bootleg, given it was in B&M stores.
