the way they treat their employees

Like immortalize them in plastic as Mandos?

My experience isn't specifically with the Star Wars team.

I know about mass layoffs during downturns that Hasbro treats as a habit, not as a last resort.  Even when a line is doing well and they decide to consolidate the workforce their actions and communications are fairly brutal and bureaucratic.  There isn't (in my experience) a lot of reassigning of staff at these times, just a lot of hatchet work.

There is a reason that the leading industrial design department in the country will not refer students to Hasbro for potential employment, despite being located less than 15 miles away.  There are no industry sponsored projects between the two, and the historically poor treatment of their workforce is a part of that.

And don't even get me started about their spanking machine initiations.  Just kidding.

I think a lot of good comments have been made here about the potential competition, supplier relationships and finicky customer base to warrant a harder look at just how "fun" such a business would be to operate.

I still have my MN mobile number even though we live out of state now, and my line isn't working for now because of call volume.

I know that bridge and area really well, thoughts with all of those involved.

Care to elaborate on this one?

I'd rather be vague here, but my comment was from first hand observation.  PM sent with details.

The problem with an online shop is the competition out there that is reputable.  NewForce, EE.com and BBTS.com are just a few of the online shops that collectors are familiar with and for the most part, are happy with their service.

Aside from the competition you should consider the supplier.  Is Hasbro or any other toy company really the kind of partner you'ld like to be in business with?  Probably not, based on their own business model of big box retailers, the way they treat their employees and their relationship with other small businesses who have tried to do what you suggest both from a bricks and mortar approach and from an online presence.  What would be in it for them?  Volume?  No.  Access to a customer base?  No.  Brand visibility/equity?  No.

It seems like a pretty limited model.

... but things like this divide the community, not bring it closer togther...

 :P

I don't recall reading "bring the community closer together" listed anywhere in the reasons for creating an unmoderated forum.  Maybe we should start a "gentle hugs" forum?

Yes, but Dean, where would we lowly non-partisan few venture?

Maybe in the trunk of your parents car?   :-X

Tyranny of the majorities! Tyranny of the majorities! Why won't you Leftists allow us nonaligned social progressives to play in the park?  :'(

It's because of the whole "foward-school" foreign policy, isn't it?

No, it's because you don't know how to use the US mail system.

I see.  You could have just copied all of my post and saved yourself most of the typing in yours.

I think you and I are usually in agreement more often than not.

Why not keep the oil and vinegar apart?  Let's have a right (wrong) and left (right) forum.

Its comments like that which are lacking in constructive criticism.  Its a great idea to be able to discuss the issues of the day without it turning into a "bitchfest".  Those kinds of comments tend to start the bitchfests though.

Only if you miss the humor and make it an attack, sweetheart.  What did the your unedited post say?

Rogue One / The Playset Thread
« on: July 26, 2007, 05:18 PM »
The thing about the vintage line was that items seemed to have a much longer shelf life.  I seem to remember almost always being able to purchase a Millennium Falcon or other vehicle and whatever the current movie playset was at retail most of the time.  It might have meant ordering from the Sears catalog, but they were at least fairly available.  Good luck picking up a Falcon over the last 10 years.  Even with a number of rereleases, they've had short shelf lives and been pretty spaced out.

The vintage line isn't a comparable situation to today's market.  I've never heard Kenner or Hasbro comment on who was buying the vintage line when it was available, but I believe the ratio was more skewed to the kid/consumer than we see today.  The price points were also different, and as Travis mentions so were the number of items available.  I don't remember anyone commenting that they had thousands of figures with no means of displaying them effectively back in the day.

I was never really interested in this set, even less now that I see the details and that over half of the set is essentially repacked repaints.  I hope they aren't planning on producing very many of these.

If it's going to be someplace worse than Watto's and Wuher's, you could make it a secret invite only type forum.

I like the idea, but there's no way the feelings would stay put.  They'll leak out.  Then again, they already do, so there shouldn't be much difference.

At least the hips look like they'll move based on how they attach.  I'm looking forward to this vehicle however it's made.
