The Clone Wars '08-'13 / Re: Recent Clone Wars Finds/Purchases
« on: September 20, 2011, 07:41 AM »
I'd have to go with McMetal here- Hasbro's intention is to sell the figures, ours is to buy them. Something is not working right now.

There are 12 Target/Walmart stores that I hit monthly. I hit 4-5 of them several times a week when I am looking for something. I have yet to see CW wave 12, and El-les and Hondo were the last two that I found as well (Walmarts, separated by miles, on teh same week).

Target re-set to big displays, loaded them with new ships, masks, lightsabers, etc. But the figure pegs remained bare or full of old legends and yellow headed clones. Now those end caps are full of nerf blasters, just in time for the new cartoon and BR releases of the movies. I don't know if they pulled back production big-time, or if this is all distribution, but product really is not getting out to the shelves in quantity to meet demand. If we are having a hard time putting in as much time as we do, there is a good chance parents/kids never even know a figure from the show was produced, much less see it at retail.

I think Lucas would have been smart to make a movie each summer between CW seasons, like they did to kick it off. They are cheap to produce, wouldn't have to do too well to break even, and would keep the brand front and center for stores to support in the toy aisle. But the clone wars have to be winding down, so that window is closing fast.

Star Wars Universe / Re: Star Wars on Blu-Ray

I went through the OT deleted scenes and interviews last night- I enjoyed it for what it was. We didn't have a BR player yet, so I took advantage of the Best Buy deal- buy any BR player $100 and up, and get $20 off the set. That made it 59.99, and I split it with my brother in law, so for $30 we get to share the set. I started up TPM at first, and was blown away by the clarity and sound. I am actually looking forward to watching all 6 movies this way, even though I will cringe every now and then. Someday he or his kids will put out the unedited versions in whatever format is the best at the time, and I will get those then as well.
I do understand people who don't want to see the new versions though. I refused to see "Walk the line" because absolutely nobody should be Johnny Cash in my head except for Johnny Cash. While I think the OT could have used some technological tweaking (some SE scenes, particularly Yavin space sequence pop to mind), it didn't need to be altered as much as it was. A few clean ups, a few more ships, that would have been just fine for me.

Kubricks / Re: Kubrick Collecting Tips
« on: September 5, 2011, 08:27 AM »
I know there were a few threads going around about display units (johnny lightning, protech, etc), so I thought this would be a good thread to bring back to the front pages. It may be a place to merge some of these topics-

The reason I went hunting for it is I started doing some kubrick shelf "clean-up." I have my OT kubs in a display with closed doors, so dust isn't much of an issue. But the PT kubes were on open shelves under the 400% bricks, and they were getting pretty dusty.

I didn't want to get individual cases for them, and I had a few model car cases I had been using for some sets (PT chases, the Fett series). I decided to do some hunting to see what else was out there.

Ebay wasn't too helpful, so I hit my local hobby shop. I found 1/24 display cases for $8.75, and thet work well for holding a series (6 figures or so). When I line the troop kubes up at attention, I can get 12 in them nicely (3 in front row, 4 in middle, and 5 in back).

The maker is imex, and they come with either black bottom panels or clear. They are stackable, so I went with black for the bottom one to put troops in, and then clear for a stacked unit on top with that series. This gave me 3 sets of 2 for the PT kubes (12 battle droids with series 8 on top, 12 phase 1 troopers with series 9, and 12 phase 2 troopers with series 10 above).

By using double stick tape, the figures really stay in place. So I can move the cases without toppling them. This way I can pick them up, wipe off the case, wipe the shelf underneath, and be done.

The cases are 9 1/2 inches long, 4 inches deep, and 3 3/4 inches tall. Size wise, they are also perfect for displaying the Max rebo band.

The one drawback is the mold process creates a dime sized effect in the middle of the top. Since I have them displayed closer to eye level, this wasn't an issue for me. But if you wanted to look down on them, it would be a slight distraction.

I also ended up with a display case as part of an auction some years back, and it has 3 tiered steps. I would have liked to have found more of them, but it was a japanese item with no manufacturer markings. There are some like it on ebay, but they are all smaller and somewhat expensive.

I'll try to get some decent pics and get them posted.

Wow... that is just incredible. I don't know what the future holds for the dx chases, but just about every past chase or special release has seen a spike, and an eventual decline, even if it took years.
I find myself really wanting a hammerhead (and even Owen), but past re-releases, particularly on a card (Anakin spirit, series 1 chase fetts, Dagobah vader, boxed luke and han stormie, even hibernation sickness han saw another release) make me think I can wait and see what happens.

The Vintage Collection / Re: Target Vintage Collection Luke's TaunTaun

Our Targets in Minnesota seem to be in the same mode- They reset, have a large section of real-estate dedicated to Star Wars, and simply don't have any product on the pegs. Some have 25 or more pegs for figures, and less figures than pegs. Others have absolutely tons of old figures.

But I am looking forward to seeing the Tauntaun in person.

I received a dx3 sandtrooper in the mail today, and it was completely sealed. I was hoping I had won the brick lottery, but no dice- probably came from a box that had owen, so the person knew the sandtrooper was a sandtrooper. Still, if it had been me, I would have double checked just in case...

My daughter and I finished the Tantive IV, and are starting on the Death Star. I'm starting to like these big sets more and more, they are great family projects!
