Customizing Tips and Tricks / Styrene Construction Questions
« on: September 16, 2007, 06:20 AM »
Had some questions about working with Styrene.

1) What thickness would be suggested for vehicle frame.

2) Best glue for bonding styrene to styrene.

3) Site with affordable sytrene sheets in decent sizes.

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Re: RTV rubber
« on: August 22, 2007, 10:46 AM »
I just got my order, but my smooth-on distributer is in Washington and I am in Oregon. I ordered on thursday and got the stuff on monday. When I origionaly was going to order from Smooth-On they suggested I go though the Washington distributer to get my stuff faster and cheaper shipping.
Ruprecht, where are you located? There might be a closer distributer to you.

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Re: RTV rubber

For those making two part molds for helmets this tutorial will help.
Now the tutorial is not on making molds for helmets specificly, but will help give ideas.
Dan Perez Studios molding and casting tutorials

If you dont have a pressure pot, just use the air vents ideas mentioned in the tutorial using toothpics glued to small areas to allow air to squeeze out.

Depending on the RTV rubber used, sometimes before pouring the mold, use a old paint brush to make sure small crevaces are filled with mold material and air bubbles on the surface are removed before pouring. I found with my helmet casts this saves alot of hassles and makes sure molds work great first time arround. (This again is for those who dont have a pressure pot.)

Also a technique to use if making latex molds of head casts, make small cuts with an exacto knife in the location of the nose, chin, ears or any other part that might suffer air bubble problems. Make sure it is a small clean cut with a sharp exacto. When pouring casting resin it helps push the air bubbles out, and if its a small incision the casting resin should not leak out. I have been doing this for a while with alot of success.

As someone who has been using Rubber Urethane RTV for the last year, who has now started using silicone rubber, honestly, save the hassle and be patient and get the right stuff for the job. I am a horribly impatient person. I went the route of getting anything I could to start molding and casting right away and it was not only way more expensive in the long run but caused far far more frustration than it was worth. Check out Smooth-Ons distributer links. In many cases there is a company that can ship the stuff faster and cheaper than ordering it directly from the store. (Or the other mold making companies mentioned in this thread.)
Though if you MUST have something right away, another store you can check and see if its in your area is TAP plastics. Its not the greatest, but its out there. Their casting resin sucks for anything other than prototype work.

Well enough of my rambling on the subject...  :P

Pretty funny :)

Thank you for posting this!
It pretty much sums up my veiw on the movie...
I think I would have rather payed $9 for that article than the movie.

Not sure about their project but the rumor is that the guys from it are going to be in costume at SDCC. Though sadly I wont be able to go. Maybe someone going could ask them in person about the status of the projects.

Ruadh from RS emailed me these images:

These images were from a link:

I hope these images help others as much as its helping me with my project!

I just got a Instant Message at RS. Someone there is emailing me some more pics. When I get them, I will post them in this thread!

From what a few people told me, Hasbro reused the same playset for both. Kinda like the ewok playset got reused for the robin hood figures. Though this is just what I have been told, not from personal experience.

Here are the links given on other sites for ImperialCommandos pics
jon4557 at RS helped out with the following info:

EDIT- Removed last pic due to the website name being in the pic

This is really cool!
I would really like to make a diarama like this, but my cat is resourceful and will find a way to destroy it... either as a scratching post or try jumping on it, knocking it down.... oh well.
Great work!
Now all you need is a Ki-Adi Mundi full of blaster holes in the middle of the diarama!

Star Wars Action Figures / Re: What'cha working on?
« on: July 22, 2007, 05:30 PM »
Let's see...

Wookiee Berserker
Microman Royal Guard
Crowd Controle Clone (with one of Straxus' own helmets)

Progress will be slow though, since my workspace has to make room, so our attic can get its makeover. After that's done, it's back to customizing!

Cool! Looking forward to seeing the Wookie and Royal Guard finished! Great sculpting on those!
What helmet you using for the Crowd Control?
Speaking of Micromen...is it normal to pay `25 bucks for 1 of them on ebay, or is that a more recent development?
Check out smalljoes.com, they sometimes have some figures on clearance and there are some microman figures as low as $7, well at least last time I checked. Though no material force ones unfortunately. I used to get clearanced devil man micromen but they finaly sold out of them.

I am desperately trying to find some decent Imp Commando pics, I have four of them in the works now.Just waiting for a paint scheme. ;D
I got a bunch of reference pics on the way soon! I will post them in the ImperialCommandos.com thread I started here at JD. (I will also post the names of the people I am thankful for providing the reference pics.)

I too am working on some imperial commandos. I am working on some from the reference images of the late imperialcommandos site and alot of new ones. So far I am scuplted the head gear and microphones onto 10-12 different heads (some are jango clones, most are not.), started sculpting a few helmets and now I got to start prepping the bodies... Just wish I had more time.

Sorry I had not popped over here to mention that I figured out who it was.
It was Jonnyboomboom from over at RS. I had trouble finding the post again because it was an old thread, but feel stupid as I overlooked that he had posted the link for me in the ImperialCommandos.com thread that was at RS...hehehe. (I have not had much sleep lately...thats my excuse and I am sticking to it...)
You are right, it was the Cobra Mountain playset.

I will try to repost the links people found at the other sites, so that those here that are interested can have access to the pics as well.

Does anyone know who did these guys and where they were origionaly posted?
I was browsing the various forums while half-asleep (a common event...) and downloaded the pics before passing out. I was not awake enough to post a reply at the time. However the next day I tried to remember where and who had made the customs and could not figure it out. I have been looking the last few days and had no success. Its driving me nuts!!!
Anyone know who made these guys?
(Also what was the playset that he used in his diarama?)

Thank you thank you thank you!
That first one in particular is one I really wanted!
Now I can get started on it and some alternatives!
Much appreciated!

I will indeed contact Sithfire about this to see if he has anymore.
I tried an email of one of the guys involved with ImperialCommandos but the email was no longer valid...oh well..

Its weird... its like not only is the site dead, but most the references to them on other sites seems to be gone too.
