Joe Defender / Re: GI Joe: Classified 6" Figure Line
« on: February 21, 2020, 02:22 PM »
Count me in as being pretty excited for this line. Joe, like Star Wars, will always be thought of as a 3 3/4” line, but I also understand that just isn’t where the game is these days. Plus, between the original ARAH line (which I’m still picking things up for), and the 25/35/50th anniversary lines, I’m pretty happy with the overall run there.

I’ve already preordered Snake Eyes. I’d be perfectly fine with the standard version, but since this was fairly easy to preorder I decided what the heck. I can’t remember more of a “grail search” toy for me than the ‘85 Snake Eyes, so the character and figure always holds a special place for me.

I had started to really get my collecting focused down to basically a Star Wars and a little Marvel, but this whole 80s renaissance this year has me rethinking my plan. Between Joe Classified, Transformers Earthrise, and the upcoming MOTU origins they basically have my nostalgic three right there....and that’s not even bringing up Super 7’s TMNT and Thundercats lines. Oh well, good time to be a collector I guess.

Middle Earth / Re: Lord of the Rings Figures

Although I didn’t get into it from the get-go (this was during my “I can’t collect anything besides Star Wars” phase), I eventually picked up the Fellowship and a handful of other figures. I really have fond memories of the line overall. Very broad, and some really nice stuff in there. I’ve never looked at the prices, but it does seem relatively forgotten sometimes. We were actually talking about rewatching the movies with our daughter this year (she is 12, and has never seen them). A fun time in collecting, especially when you could get 6” figures for what $10 or less for a time?

I know at this point it is basically all repacks, but I’m still pretty excited for these. Like always, a sucker for the packaging. I’ve really been hoping for a new photo real improvement to Bespin Luke, because he just looks out of his element next to the excellent Bespin Han and Bespin Escape Leia figures. Also kind of like these as an anniversary type special line. A dozen or so figures from each movie, on the nice vintage card backs. Unless they decide to put the entire Black Series on these cards, these are a nice treat every few years.

Much like Star Wars, 3 3/4” always seems like THE scale for Joes....but that being said I’m pretty excited about the prospect of a 6” Joe line. In general, Hasbro hits it out of the park with this scale. Looking at Black Series a and Marvel Legends, or even their Power Rangers or Overwatch lines, you get a pretty quality figure for $20-ish.

I also think I’m more open to this scale because I was so happy with the 25th/30th/etc run of figures we got a few years ago. I know there is always more that can be done, or improvements, but that is a line where I feel pretty complete (figure wise at least). The only drawback is the vehicle/play set side of things, much like Star Wars.

Other Toy Lines / 2020: What Are You Collecting?
« on: January 1, 2020, 09:17 PM »
Another year in the books. Can it really be 25 years since the launch of modern Star Wars? I, like others here, have accumulated a LOT of stuff in that time. As I say every year, looking to unload more, collect a little less, and condense down. It makes it more and more difficult with so many nostalgia/80s lines on the way. Here’s what I’m looking at for 2020:

Star Wars

Vintage Collection - probably most, or at least anything new or OT based
Black Series - probably quite a bit here too, this line is really hitting its stride now

Marvel Legends

More selective here. They are amazing looking, but just a lot to keep up with. I’m a sucker for classic stuff, and try to keep up on new MCU stuff as well.

Transformers

I ended up getting back into Transformers with the Siege line, which were great, and it looks like a lot of great stuff on the way with the next version, Earthrise. I go for original “arc” bots

MOTU Origins

Mattel’s new line, I know I’ll probably be in. Reasonably priced and seem to be nicely done.

The only other thing off hand is if we get some sort of return of classic GI Joes with the Snake Eyes movie later this year. I’d be in for some 6” Joes (or 3 3/4” if it returns)

The Vintage Collection / Top 5 Vintage Collection of 2019
« on: December 30, 2019, 09:11 PM »
I know we don’t do this a lot anymore, but I’m always curious to see what everyone’s favorite things were that were released this year. I know items are overall more limited for TVC these days, so feel free to include any items, in any order:

1 - Jabba’s Sail Barge (the Khetanna)
2 - Imperial Stormtrooper
3 - Han Solo - Stormtrooper (Target)
4 - Saelt Marae (Yakface)
5 - Poe Dameron’s X-Wing Fighter

Honorable Mentions: Scarif Stormtrooper, Klaatu, Lando Calrissian, Zorii Bliss, Sith Jet Trooper, and any OT with new faces and/or new cardbacks (X-Wing Luke, Chewbacca, R2, Jawa, etc.)

The Black Series 6" Figures / Top 5 Black Series of 2019
« on: December 30, 2019, 08:59 PM »
I know we don’t always do this here anymore, but I was kind of curious what everyone’s favorite Black Series items were for this year. Make your list however you want, ordered or not ordered, regular releases and exclusives, figures or whatever. Doesn’t necessarily have to be the “best” 5, but just your favorite. Since they’ve added the face scans, tough to get a bad figure in this line anymore. Here’s mine in no particular order (going by the Amidala/Mimban Han/Mace/etc as 2019’s first wave):

1 - The Mandalorian (regular and carbonized release)
2 - Clone Commander Obi-Wan Kenobi (Walgreens)
3 - Chewbacca w/C-3P0 (Amazon)
4 - Luke Skywalker Jedi Knight (Wal-Mart)
5 - Cara Dune

Honorable mentions: Mace Windu, Han Solo (Mimban), Emperor with Throne, Heavy Infantry Mandalorian, General Grievous

Other Collectibles / Re: Galaxy of Adventures 5" Figures
« on: December 29, 2019, 12:39 PM »
I’ve picked up a handful of the OT ones (Han and Chewie, Jedi Luke), and I don’t think they are too bad. I’d still rather see the resources go to 3 3/4” stuff, but the toys themselves are well done. They seemed to sit for quite awhile at Target here, but really cleared out the week leading up to a Christmas. When I was there yesterday, they had 4 left (2 Rey’s, 2 Jet troopers).

The Sequel Trilogy / Re: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (SPOILERS)
« on: December 21, 2019, 09:08 AM »
Saw it last night, and really, really liked it. It really was a fast paced, packed film though and I need a couple more viewings to take it all in. Some things I really liked:

*Chewie gets his medal!
*Luke raising the X-Wing
*The lightsaber battles
*The fleet arriving
*Having the new trilogy “big 3” together, they really do have good chemistry
*I thought it was a great movie for 3PO
*Wicket! I had heard he showed up, sort of hoped he’d be helping on the Falcon or something
*Nice integration of Leia I thought
*Little return of Han/return of Ben Solo
*Brief Luke/Leia training scene

And so much more. Even though it is “the end”, I felt there was so much story to still tell. Finn/Jannah’s backstory, is Finn Force sensitive?, what’s next for Rey, etc. kind of hoping we see some Disney Plus shows or something more with these characters. Say what you want about the ST, but I feel like much of the casting is pretty great. Very likeable actors/characters. Can’t wait to see it again.

Joe Defender / Re: The Future of G.I. Joe?

https://news.hisstank.com/2019/12/17/john-reale-overseeing-upcoming-g-i-joe-toyline-at-hasbro-67485

Sounds like Hasbro has a lead for their GI Joe team, and there's not one but two lines coming from Hasbro for GI Joe. One based on the Snake Eyes movie, and an Evergreen line that I assume means classic designs. It'll be interesting to see what they have at Toy Fair next year...

Some more info on the Evergreen thing:
https://news.hisstank.com/2019/12/01/hasbro-working-on-a-g-i-joe-evergreen-toyline-67411

Thank you so much for sharing this Ben. I really hope we do see a comeback. I really miss Joe, and see lots of stuff on the horizon for properties like MOTU, so hopefully it is time here too. I’d be curious to see what they would do at the 3 3/4” scale, kind of (sadly) a dying scale anymore. I would like to see more though. I can’t lie though, I’d like to get a 6” Snake Eyes though too  ;)

The Vintage Collection / Re: Figure Ideas from The Mandalorian
« on: December 14, 2019, 09:03 PM »
Like it has been said, but with each new episode of the Mandalorian that comes out I keep thinking “man, I wish this had a full line”. I know many of the characters are sort of one offs at this point, but I’m digging a lot of the designs and it sure makes for a varied lineup.

I really miss them. At this point, SW:Resistance has more 3.75 figures than TROS and unless Hasbro springs a secret wave on us after the movie drops, that's unlikely to change. It's not even like I'm collecting right now.

I was thinking about this the other day....I collect Black Series as well, but if I just stuck to 3 3/4”, it would really be an inexpensive (and slow) year. Heck, are we done until the Mando wave (which is like April)?

The Black Series 6" Figures / Re: 6" Black Series TROS Wave 1
« on: November 29, 2019, 08:10 PM »
It is funny, at least locally, how little of this wave I saw outside of Force Friday. Sure there are the usual suspects that hung around a little longer, but honestly I think I’ve seen the second wave more frequently at this point. One of my nephews was telling us what he wanted for Christmas (age 8), and he specifically told me “Black Series Mandalorian”, knowing that I’m the Star Wars uncle. We would love to get him one,  but they are nowhere to be found. I took a look at eBay and even the normal version seems to be hitting $40-$60. It would be nice to see more shipments, or at least figures like Mando slipped into current assortments on the lead up to Christmas.

TV-9D9 / Re: The Mandalorian (SPOILERS possible)
« on: November 22, 2019, 08:54 PM »
So great, wow. Just loving this show. We were watching this week’s and toward the end my wife said “oh no, it’s going to be over isn’t it?” :) I know we talk about it all the time here, but man this would make a great toyline (especially at 3 3/4”). Characters (hunters/Mandos/etc), vehicles, beasts....wish we could get more. This week’s battle scene alone was a treasure trove.

Other Toy Lines / Scooby Doo Figures
« on: November 20, 2019, 02:32 PM »
Ok, I know this probably isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I’ve always been a Scooby Doo fan since I was a kid, and noticed some figure 2 packs on a recent trip to Wal-Mart. They are very similar to figures my daughter had when she was younger, and some may even be repacks from then. At any rate, they are two packs containing one Mystery Gang member and one of the classic cartoon baddies. Even better, they are priced at less than $6 a pack ($5.82 I think?). Our store only had the Scooby and Shaggy sets, but I understand the whole gang is available. I think it is for the 50th anniversary. They aren’t necessarily “highly detailed”, but kind of neat for the price if you want a Scooby Doo to hang out in the display. Roughly 5” scale I think.

The Bullpen / Re: Marvel Legends
« on: November 20, 2019, 02:26 PM »
Not sure if anyone is looking, but while at WM looking for Luke/Yoda, I noticed that our local store had (finally) gotten in some of the “worthy” Captain America figures from Endgame. I had never seen one in the wild (and bought one on eBay), and they even rang up for $16.82. Might be worth taking another look if you are interested, an outstanding figure.
