Watto's Junk Yard / Re: 2004 DVD Release List
« on: August 4, 2004, 12:01 PM »
Maybe it was mentioned earlier and I missed it, but I just saw this review over at dvd.ign.com.  I didn't realize that "The Black Hole" from Disney was being released on DVD, I always enjoyed that movie as a kid.

That being said, I'm an adult and it would be different if I was thinking of selling off my vintage MOTU, M.A.S.K. and SW stuff.  The modern stuff is just a bunch of stuff I went loony over and I shouldn't feel bad of dumping it

That's a good point Scott, and kind of the way I feel as well.  I don't think I'd ever part with my modern Star Wars collection either (at least the majority of the OT stuff), unless I had to for financial reasons or something (although it really isn't worth much I'm sure anyways).  I think that is sometimes why I get interested in other modern lines at times too, is because I wish I had more of certain "toys" when I was a kid.  I'm kind of in the same boat as you in some ways, my wife isn't crazy about the "other" collections I start/have, and things I spend too much on Star Wars the way it is.  I can't say I totally disagree though, I know it gets crazy at times.  Good luck Brent on selling your goalies collection, I hope you get what you are looking for out of it.  It would be nice to have that money, to put towards Star Wars collectibles, or your house, or whatever.

Middle Earth / Re: LOTR Trilogy Figures
« on: August 4, 2004, 11:36 AM »
Also, I wanted to ask some of your opinions on a figure as well.  Of the four or so figures I hope to pick up, one of them is Samwise Gamgee.  Although I have read rumors of another one coming up in the future, it must be aways off, because I haven't seen anything online or at the recent fairs.  Of the ones that have come out, which would you recommend picking up?  The other figures I hope to get (Aragorn, Frodo, Merry), I'm waiting for the upcoming "super poseable" versions (with the exception of Merry, I hope to get the armored version), so I'm waiting on those right now.  If you had to pick one Sam, which would be the best one to get?  I know many people like the orc armor version, but I'm looking for a little less "scene specific" one.  Thanks for any advice you might have.

Kubricks / Re: Kubricks and Minimates
« on: August 4, 2004, 11:01 AM »
I know, I've always thought I would just pick one or the other...finishing out what I want from the Toy Biz line, or picking up the minimates instead.  I suppose, for what I want from the TB line, that would probably be the better option since there is only a few more figures that I care to have.  Plus, the sculpts look so nice, and would probably be a better collection to have down to road to me.  The minimates sure are nice though.  I hate when I get tempted again, I'm trying to give up other lines...not pick up more! :)

Original Trilogy Collection / Re: Vintage OTC Figures
« on: August 4, 2004, 10:58 AM »
Nice to see another figure spotlight, it is nice hearing more about these figures.  Boba Fett looks pretty spiffy to me too, and from the sounds of things, should be everything that we were hoping for.  So, with 18 points, is this the most articulated Star Wars figure ever?  At least, in the 3 3/4" line?  I don't remember hearing of any figure having more, and Fett is a good one to "set the bar" with.  The VOTC line continues to impress, at least to me, and I kind of wish we'd get another wave or two of these.  Maybe after the ROTS hype dies down in 2006, Hasbro will go this route and release a few more "vintage style" figures.

Saga '02-'04 / Re: Saga Purchases
« on: August 4, 2004, 10:33 AM »
Actually made a Saga purchase yesterday for the first time in awhile.  I picked up a HOF C-3PO at Wal-Mart.  The Star Wars section was pretty much decimated, only a couple of Hoth Hans and TR Lukes hanging there, and a lone 3PO (the bubble was pretty smashed up).  I never had this figure (in any release), and decided to pick it up.  Its a pretty good looking 3PO I think, happy to add it to the collection.

Middle Earth / Re: LOTR Trilogy Figures
« on: August 4, 2004, 10:26 AM »
Just stopped in at TRU yesterday to check for anything new, and it appears the LOTR section at our TRU here has been narrowed down as well.  The pegs that were used for Trilogy figures are now gone (and replaced with some other stuff), and there are just pegs packed full of old packaging Gollums now (for $8 still).  Maybe this news is true, but it is surprising.  It seems like this line still sells well, and has some life in it (at least until the DVD EE release)...and it seems like Toy Biz has plans for this further into the future with what was shown.

Like many of you said, it is strange (and sad) that Toys R Us, can't even dominate the market in....toys.  Their prices are more often than not higher (sometimes much) than anywhere else on all the toy lines I check out (Star Wars, Spidey/Marvel, and LOTR), they never seem to clearance figures out (still $8 Gollums? come on), and now it appears that some areas are becoming more limited in selection.  Its a shame really that they can't do better.

I see that the Lord of the Rings TRU 4-packs are now available at Amazon.com for $9.99.  I have tried to stay away from these so far, since they haven't shown up around here it has helped...but seeing them online, it is awfully tempting.  Anyone collecting these (or found the 4 packs), what do you think of them?  Are you going to start/continue?

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Selling Collections
« on: August 4, 2004, 09:56 AM »
It has really been nice reading everyone's comments on this, again...great topic Scott.  Its been surprising how many of us seem to feel the same way about collections, or at least think about it from time to time.  I guess I'm fortunate enough that I never really got into any other lines really big outside of Star Wars, so it hasn't been a big financial thing, but at the same time what I do have takes up space/money..and time to go and find it, so it really does make you consider what is important to you.

I think sometimes I even look at my Star Wars collection and see certain items/figures and think "did I really need this?".  I try to be more selective in my buying now, and kind of wish I had always been that way.  Although I like my collection, it does at time seem overwhelming.  I think that is why sometimes I get pretty psyched about "subsets" like the VOTC, because I think "well, its only 12 figures or so, and I could display them on one shelf by themselves and it will look nice".  I guess I'm the type of person that doesn't want my collections overwhelming the room/space they are in, and starting to look jumbled or messy.  But, while I say that, I still like collecting most of the basic line (especially OT stuff), and I'm always ready for more figures too...so I can't complain too much.

Anyways, it has been interesting to see everyone's thoughts and opinions on this topic so far.  I'm kind of glad to see that many of the rest of you have at least thought about it at one time or another.

Revenge of the Sith / Re: Breaking the bank, what's the price?
« on: August 4, 2004, 09:50 AM »
I guess I wouldn't be surprised to see a price raise with the ROTS figures.  I certainly hope not though (as all of us do), and if they do, maybe just to $5-something.  I was just thinking back the other day about when I paid $7-$8 a figure for those Episode I characters, that is just crazy.  And, when I look back at it now, it wasn't worth it to me.  That is my least favorite movie, and really the most boring part of my collection to me unfortunately.  If they were for some reason $12-13 a piece, I'd have to strongly consider what I was going to do.  I'd probably still collect a few, but be quite limited (main characters only, very few supporting).  I just couldn't afford that.

Scale change?  I really think (hope) that Hasbro isn't that stupid.  Star Wars toys have been in the 3 3/4" scale forever, and for them to change it for the last movie would be insane.  I too would probably drop out, and it might prompt me as well to get rid of all my prequel figures/ships/etc. as well.  But, that said, I don't think it will happen....yet....but you can never put it past them.  I could see them switching scales once the movies are said and done, or doing something different.  I'm really curious to see where the line heads once ROTS is all said and done.  How many figures (if any) we'll get each year, whether it will be more of a collector line (hopefully), with VOTC-style figures, packaging, etc. (but hopefully not that expensive).  I really enjoy collecting Star Wars, so I hope it continues, but I think I would be ok with it being a little more limited in figure releases (financially, it would be better for me).  The days of 50 figures a year might be done, I'm not sure if any other lines really have that many?  Maybe GI Joe, but I'm not sure.

I just hate the direction sports cards took through the 90's and on into the present.  It used to be such a fun hobby, but then everything totally changed, for the worse.

I agree totally Matt, this is how I felt about it too (and why I quit).  I had so much fun collecting cards in my elementary, junior high and early high school years...but then it got so it wasn't fun.  Too much to keep up with, less cards in each pack, higher price per pack, it just got to be too much.  Part of me would like to get into cards again too, but like I said, probably just one kind...to keep it simple and cheap.  Really thinking about going to a card shop here in town to see if I can shed my baseball card collection.

Thanks Dale, I appreciate it.  I know what you mean, I'm not sure if it is worth letting go of them or not.  I've been looking around ebay and such, and it seems like the only things that sell are graded cards, sets, or sealed boxes.  It isn't a real big deal, but I thought I'd trim off some of what I had maybe.  I have so many baseball cards, and I'm just not really interested in the sport anymore, so I figured I might get rid of them.  We'll see if it is worth the trouble or not though.

I have (and continue to) sporadically collect Star Wars cards, past and present, although not with any consistency.  The new heritage series looks tempting though.  I got out of card collecting for much the same reasons you did.  When I was collecting sports cards, there was only a few basic "brands" to buy.  There was Topps, Score, Donruss, Fleer, and depending on the sport Pro Set (football), Skybox (NBA), Hoops (NBA), and Upper Deck was in its beginning years.  There are probably a few I'm forgetting as well, but it was more basic when I collected.  It is just too much to keep track of (and afford) nowadays.

Part of me wouldn't mind collecting sports cards again (basketball probably, or football), but I don't know if I could afford it.  Plus, I don't like paying $2.50+ for a pack of 8 cards.  When I was collecting, I think it was at least 10-12 for a $1 or less.  That's more like it.  Plus, looking at all the different brands, sets, subsets, etc., I don't know which one to go with.  I'd obviously have to pick a focus, or a certain brand, and stick with it.  Anyone know if those even exist anymore...just plain old, regular, sports cards, now "super duper sets", or extra expensive sublines?  Just looking around the net trying to figure things out, its enough to make your head spin :).

On the topic of cards...when we were moving a couple months ago, I found my baseball/football/basketball/Marvel card collections, and looked through a few of them.  I sold some "extras" boxes on a garage sale a couple of years ago, but still have quite a few left.  I have sometimes thought about selling much of it off (takes up a lot of room, and I don't actively collect them anymore anyways), and use it to fund Star Wars/current collecting funds.  I'd also want to keep a few, just to have if we ever have kids some day.  Have any of you ever sold off most (or all) of your sports card collections?  It seems to me that most of what I have likely isn't worth much anymore (like it was at the time at least), since the advent of grading has come around.  Are "regular", ungraded sports cards worth anything anymore?  I mainly collected from the 1988-1994ish time I think, for the most part.  Its funny, I was a big K.C. Royals fan as a kid, and of course, Bo Jackson was my favorite player.  I have a huge collection of his cards, that probably aren't worth squat anymore :P  Do any of you know, are sports cards from back then even worth anything now, if they aren't graded?  Just curious.

Other Collectibles / Re: Unleashed Again
« on: August 3, 2004, 10:45 AM »
From what we can see, that Unleashed Stormtrooper looks pretty sweet.  Definitely looking forward to that one.  This is a line I really enjoy.  Although they do take up a fair amount of space, I have only been buying the OT ones, so that helps some.  I don't really have the funds to pursue higher end statues, busts, etc., so this is a nice alternative to me.  And, I really think that overall Hasbro does a very nice job on these.  The sculpts are pretty amazing (facial sculpts for the most part seem to look almost exactly like the character), and are maybe an example of what Hasbro could do if they had a 6" scale line.  Anyways, I'd recommend the line to you definitely Matt.  They are nice display pieces, and not as expensive as other statue lines.  Although....you can't underestimate the OCD....it could take a hold of you ;)

I was wondering if anyone else has changed their mind, picked up a different line, etc.?  Recently, I have had to reconsider my collecting (outside of Star Wars), and I'm trying to narrow it down to one other, smaller (than SW) line...because of a variety of reasons (funds, space, stuff to chase down, etc.).  Star Wars is tough enough sometimes to keep up with (financially and with the amount of stuff out there), and I haven't been able to even collect all the Star Wars based lines I'm interested in, just because it gets expensive or they are tough to find.  Anyways, I've been trying to think about what I'm going to cut back (or out) on...and what will be my "secondary" collection outside of Star Wars.

I really enjoy the Lord of the Rings figures, and as I've said before, I could be happy if I picked up four more figures.  I just wanted a "base" group, and I could be happy with that.  To me, since it is small in scope (9 figures total) and "finite" since I'd be done in a month or so if I found everything I needed, I don't necessarily consider that something I am "collecting" anymore, since I'd be done (although the Mrs. disagrees).  The line outside of Star Wars that I enjoy the most would be Spidey/Marvel.  I was hoping to broaden my Marvel Legends collection, but actually might have to end up giving it up.  I think I will focus on Spider-Man (Spidey Classics) if I can't do the entire Marvel universe, since it will be more limited with only 1 "new" bad guy each wave usually...and plus, Spidey is my favorite character, so that would be the way I go.

Anyways, I guess I'm leaning towards collecting Spider-Man stuff secondary to Star Wars, and perhaps finishing out what I want from the Lord of the Rings line.  I really enjoy some other lines (Marvel Legends especially, minimates), and there are some that have been tempting at one time or another (MOTU, Muppets, GI Joe)...but I think at this point, that is the way I would go.
