Title: What Blue Ray DVD player to buy?
Post by: evenflow on September 24, 2008, 12:45 PM
So i am thinking of getting a blue ray dvd player come black friday and was wondering what experiences you guys have had with them? Whats good? It HAS to be BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE. So any advice would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know all of them are backwards compatible.  I bought a BDP-S300.  It's not the most expensive model in the world, but with firmware updates it seems to be fine.  They have it on Amazon right now for under $200 shipped.  They're phasing it out though in favor of the BDP-S350, which I think Amazon has for about $270 right now.

Buy a PS3.   ;D

If that's not in the cards, you should know that since the players are sending out a digital signal through HDMI, picture and sound quality should be identical from one player to the other.  So your real issues will be features and price.  If you want web interactivity, you should be sure to get a Profile 2.0 player.

Blu-ray.com has the best data out there.  You can start here:

I agree. A friend of mine just picked it up yesterday.

If you have a full surround system and your receiver can translate TrueHD, DTS Master HD Codecs and the like... then the PS3 is a must. BEST PLAYER OUT THERE BY FAR !

i have heard this too.  the ps3 is a very good blu-ray player and it has good upscaling abilities for your older discs too.

I can't speak to the PS3 or other blu-ray players, but I've been very impressed with the BDP-S300's ability on that.  I had a regular upscaling DVD player before I got the blu-ray player and this one knocks the non-blu-ray versions out of the water.

Get a Blu-ray Player for $180!

Posted September 24, 2008 05:45 PM by Josh Dreuth

Blu-ray Movies While supplies last, Amazon.com is offering those customers who purchase a select Blu-ray player and three Warner Brothers Blu-ray titles an instant $50 discount. For those who choose to purchase the Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray Disc player - which currently has a low price of $229 - that means with the $50 discount, the cost of the player drops to $180!

Now, this deal all hinges on the fact that you can find three Warner titles that you like - a task that shouldn't be very difficult given the fact that many of the applicable titles are some of the most popular Blu-ray titles available.

Just to switch the direction a bit, can a standard player play Blu-Ray discs?

I'm not quite ready to jump to a new player though when the need arises, I'll obviously do so.  But should I be buying new movies in the format?

Brent, blu-ray discs only play in blu-ray players.  The hardware in regular players can't read them.

Bummer, but not a surprise.  Thanks for clarifying.
