Um... did anyone ask for this?  Like, ever, in the history of fan polls or requests?  ???

And for a weird looking figure, we have a weird distribution plan - sold at EE's booth at SDCC and then on Target.com after the show. (To go along with the rest of the line being Target exclusive, I guess?)

Here's the press release info -

STAR WARS SPECIAL EDITION RETRO PROTOTYPE 3.75-INCH DARTH VADER Figure
(HASBRO/Ages 4 & up/Approx. Retail Price: $12.99/ Available at the Entertainment Earth Booth #2343 at Comic-Con International in San Diego)
Available at the Entertainment Earth Booth #2343 at San Diego Comic-Con and exclusively on Target.com in limited quantities following the convention.

I already was on the fence about the whole retro line, this just does not appeal to me.

If I can get one to have as a "sample", I'll keep it carded, keep it with the other eight which I only plan on getting one of each to keep carded and that will be it, but if I miss it, I will not be disappointed.

If they make it available online as a red card exclusive, like they did the Lego Bust, which was super easy to get, and I'll get 5% off when I buy one, sure.

Since they are selling them at the EE booth, I'm kinda surprised that they aren't letting EE sell some of them online as well.

I initially thought this was a 6” figure. It actually has more appeal to me as part of the retro 3.75” line. I will probably pick one up.

I hope that's the case, but thinking about things like the Lego Vader Bust and the Golden Girls 4-Pack... Con Exclusives that go to Trarget  have a habit of disappearing quick.

I wasn't sure about this, but the thing that finally made up my mind was thinking I might get some super funky lightsaber/cape colors that would be fun to play around with on the real figures. So now I want one, but only if it is readily available on the day. I'm not gonna go crazy chasing it or pay scalper prices later.

Why is Hasbro showing this Vader in four different color configurations?  God help us all.

I think a lot of folks missed the note at Toy Fair that this figure would be randomly assembled so there are thousands of combinations possible.  At a minimum, assuming there are only six colors (blue, yellow, green, purple, red, orange) and 7 parts (head, lightsaber, r arm, l arm, r leg, l leg, torso) that's around 46,656 combinations.

Adam Pawlus said on his twitter that Hasbro's only rule was matching colors can't be on parts next to each other, so the number is less than 46k but still a damn ton of possible configurations.

I so don't get the hate. Fits in with what this is meant to be. A whatever plastics we have for each part prototype. So now everyone's will be different.

I'm acting like I wasn't a completist once with that comment, but hates a strong word.

Hate is wrong word for me. I Iove it. But I'm annoyed with how difficult it is for sure. I really want a Fett and it's so frustrating to look at the 100s of listings on eBay. What percentage are bought just to scalp compared to actually add to one's collection?

Got my Ship-to-Store Prototype Vader order today. Mildly disappointed that the two figures ended up being identical. Oh well. I'll see if any Targets around me actually get the figure in stock and then if I can find one that's different I'll pick it up - wasn't going to go crazy with the color variants, just wanted to get two different ones to have examples of the fact that they were "random".

Given the rules of color matching, my buddy did the math and says the number is 5040 different combinations.

Given the rules of color matching, my buddy did the math and says the number is 5040 different combinations.

That's what I came up with as well - there are seven slots for color: head, right arm, left arm, torso, left leg, right leg, lightsaber blade. So I'm pretty sure, that means the permutations are 7! = 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 5040

But I could be mistaken though, since I think that would only apply if there were seven different colors for the parts, but there are only six - so it might actually be (6 x 6!) instead which would be 4320 permutations.

Title: Re: SDCC 2019 Retro Collection Amazing Technicolor Vader

I think that would only apply if there were seven different colors for the parts, but there are only six - so it might actually be (6 x 6!) instead which would be 4320 permutations.

4320 would be correct if we are trying to calculate Vaders with seven parts but only six colors to choose from. (like Pete said, 6! for the first six parts and then six possible colors for the seventh part).

That assumes that Hasbro's goal was one part color#1, one part color#2, one part color#3, one part color#4, one part color#5, two parts color#6.  If we start seeing Vader figures with more than two parts of the same color (like the Vader figure in the press photos with two blue arms and two green legs (https://www.jedidefender.com/gallery/imageFolio.cgi?action=view&link=Conventions/Star_Wars_Celebration_Chicago_2019/Hasbro/Star_Wars/Press_Images/Kenner_Retro_Collection_3.75-inch/San_Diego_Comic_Con_2019_Exclusive&image=TVC_kenner_retro_special_edition_darth_vader_loose_colors_pose.jpg&img=&tt=)) then the number of potential Vaders would be even larger.

Post by: Dave on July 30, 2019, 11:08 AM
It should be fewer than that if they don't allow for the same color to be in adjacent spots.

I started to do a combinations and permutations calculation but I'm too far removed from this math subject to recall it correctly with the added complexity of adjacent spots.  Where is a math major when you need one... ::)

It should be fewer than that if they don't allow for the same color to be in adjacent spots.

If we assume the rules from above (one part color#1, one part color#2, one part color#3, one part color#4, one part color#5, two parts color#6) and add a rule that parts that touch can't have the same color we'd reduce 4320 by 1/6th to 3600.

Example -
Torso - six possible colors
r arm - five possible colors
l arm - four possible colors
r leg - three possible colors
l leg = two possible colors
head - one possible color
saber - five possible colors (can't match r arm)

6*5*4*3*2*1*5=3600

Example -
Torso - six possible colors

l leg = two possible colors
head - one possible color
saber - five possible colors (can't match r arm)

6*5*4*3*2*1*5=3600

This is it - well done! I totally forgot the fact that if it's say, a Red right arm, then you're definitely NOT going to get a Red Lightsaber blade in the figure. So yeah - for each Right Arm, there are only a total of five possible blade colors.

Ok - so still - with 3600 possible permutations - how on Earth, if ordered two did I end up with two identical ones?!?!!? That's not cool!  >:(

The best reasoning I can think of for that to happen is that if these come in cases of six, like the Retro Collection Wave 1 figures did, each case contains 6 x of one permutation and there were a total of 3600 cases produced. That would then mean, there are a grand total of 3600 x 6 = 21,600 of these made - that seems low, but I guess in today's collecting market, that might actually be the right number.

Needless to say, I'm going to do exactly what Jeff is planning on doing, check the Target App on Friday morning, see if my store is showing as having them in stock and head over there in an attempt to score one more so I can at least have a 2nd variant and if by some miracle they show up again online in the Target app/website, I might order it again for a possible 3rd variant, but that would be it.

I would be happy if I can manage to snag one carded and one to open.  I'm glad I have stopped collecting for the most part.  It is much easier to keep up with the action figure cover comics than trying to find actual action figures these days.  At least I got the retro wave case from EE so I don't have to look for them any more.

In regard to the variants for the Retro Vader - it has been determined that even though there are hundreds of possible combinations, Hasbro produced only 18 variations.

I just struck out at the downtown Chicago Target.  They pulled up a list of nearby stores and of the 15 or so in the list, not a single one has the Vader.

If anyone stumbles across an extra and wouldn’t mind mailing it to me loose, I’d pay for it all and love you forever.

Got my two orders of two each from Target yesterday. This time I lucked out and was able to get four unique variants, 2 with Yellow heads and 2 with Blue heads, but the rest of the parts were different thankfully - so now I have five variants in all out of the 18 total available.

I would gladly get more should I walk into a Target and actually see them or have the ability to order more from the Target website/app, but I'm definitely not going to pay $35 for each version, if all I end up are the five I have now, then so be it.

I still haven't found one.  Haven't been able to order one on Target's site... haven't found a reasonably priced one on eBay... I thought about Tunghori, but sometimes I get stuff from him that's weird, like they're production samples that got rejected or something.

I'm thinking the answer to this is "yes" - unless Target is holding back stock on these for Triple Force Friday since there really isn't going to be a lot of 3.75" product released.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the only thing we should be expecting is a single TVC wave, the Yavin 4 Luke exclusive at Walmart and the Red 5 X-Wing - considering that no 5POA figures are coming for EP9, I could see Target wanting to expand their offerings - but that would mean that someone at Target is *REALLY* paying attention, and unfortunately, we all know that they aren't.

I put in seven orders of two each myself - and I already had six with five of them being unique. Six of my seven orders are ship-to-store and I should hopefully have them tomorrow or Thursday. The seventh order I ordered with a BluRay to get over the $25 order add-on restriction and with this order I was able to pick up another duplicate and a sixth unique version - so I have 2x Green, 2x Yellow and 2x Blue helmet versions (yeah! one third of the way there!)

I have two "extras" and unfortunately, they are both the same - Green Helmet, Yellow Torso, Red Right Arm, Purple Left Arm, Orange Right Leg, Blue Left Leg.

Obviously I'll know what I still need once I get the other 12 I have on their way to me. I have ZERO illusions that I'm going to score the remaining 12 I need to complete the set in those, but I wouldn't mind AT LEAST getting one variation of Red, Orange and Purple helmet.

My thinking is that whatever I have extra, I'll trade for variations I'm missing and/or just return them to Target.

I should have ordered 16... but I felt bad ordering so many as it was.

If I get duplicates, I'll get them up here to see if we can all help each other out.

I don't think I care what version I end up with.  I bought two and will only keep one.  I will be glad to share my color combos and be willing to swap with the completists out there if you want to pay for shipping.

So I was able to pick up five of my orders this morning. Out of those 10, only 4 new variations that I didn't have and 6 that I already had, with one of those six being a definite return because the cardback is badly curled at the top.

I still don't have any variations with the Purple helmet.

Of the four new variations I got, it was the third Blue version I didn't have, two Red Helmet versions and an Orange helmet version.

So that brings my total up to 10 out of the 18 variations that exist.

Keeping my fingers crossed that in the remaining order I have left to get, there is at least one Purple helmet version.

Ended up with another one of those Green Helmet, Yellow Torso, Red Right Arm, Purple Left Arm, Orange Right Leg, Blue Left Leg variations in this batch of 10 as well.  :-\  So now I have three extra of that variation.

I’ll buy the extra from you if it’s not going to be too much trouble. I’m opening all these anyway, so you could chuck it in a small padded mailer without the card or bubble to keep it simple... no pressure if you’d rather not deal with mailing it.

Glad to be hearing of conformation of duplicate figures.

Assuming that this Vader can be boiled and disassembled/reassembled, it would be interesting if someone would attempt to assemble a loose collection of every possible variant. Expensive, but certainly a feat.

What was the point of not selling these in stores? Isn’t the whole idea of an exclusive item to drive foot traffic into your retail space? WTH?

Okay, I'm going for all 18 now...

I should have ordered 18 when they were briefly in-stock, but it already felt excessive ordering 8, so that's what I did.  Lucky me, the 8 I got didn't have any duplicates.  If anyone has any extras they're willing to sell... I'm looking for all of them except these:

Torso:  Purple

Yeah, I don't get that at all.  I ordered ship to store, so they're still getting a trip out of me I guess.

That's bold.  If I found these on the cheap, I'd be game for boil/popping them to get a set of Vaders all the same color (All blue parts, all red parts, etc.)

I actually was wondering yesterday if assembling my own out of whatever scraps I could find would be a better way to go about this, but I doubt it will be.

So, incredibly, I've purchased 4 total Vaders and 3 are the same exact one!

I bought two in store. Both different. I just picked up the two I bought on line and not only were they identical, they were both identical to one the ones I already had.  :P

So, I guess I have the 2 of the following for trade:

Blue Head
Green Body
Orange Right hand
Red Left hand
Yellow Right leg
Purple left leg
Blue Light saber

Orange Head
Purple Saber Arm (Left when looking at it)
Orange Saber
Yellow Right Arm (Saberless Arm)
Blue Torso
Green Leg on Saber Side
Red Leg on Opposite Side

It's carded at the moment.

I will take your extra one.  Really doesn't matter which variation.  I'm just looking for one to keep carded and one loose.  The closest I have gotten to finding these is checking the Target link every day and sometime I can get the pull down to add a figure but it says it can't ship to my zip code.

Someone at RS posted a simpler way to track these... here's the variants based entirely on helmet, torso, and lightsaber color:

[X] Blue Helmet - Green Torso - Blue Lightsaber
[  ] Blue Helmet - Purple Torso - Yellow Lightsaber
[  ] Blue Helmet - Red Torso - Red Lightsaber

[  ] Green Helmet - Orange Torso - Green Lightsaber
[  ] Green Helmet - Orange Torso - Purple Lightsaber
[X] Green Helmet - Yellow Torso - Orange Lightsaber

[X] Orange Helmet - Blue Torso - Orange Lightsaber
[X] Orange Helmet - Green Torso - Green Lightsaber
[X] Orange Helmet - Yellow Torso - Purple Lightsaber

[  ] Purple Helmet - Green Torso - Orange Lightsaber
[  ] Purple Helmet - Orange Torso - Green Lightsaber
[  ] Purple Helmet - Red Torso - Blue Lightsaber

[X] Red Helmet - Blue Torso - Yellow Lightsaber
[X] Red Helmet - Purple Torso - Blue Lightsaber
[X] Red Helmet - Yellow Torso - Red Lightsaber

[  ] Yellow Helmet - Blue Torso - Yellow Lightsaber
[X] Yellow Helmet - Purple Torso - Purple Lightsaber
[  ] Yellow Helmet - Red Torso - Red Lightsaber

If anyone happens to have an extra of any of the ones that don't have an X in them, I'd be happy to buy them from you!

That seems typically.  I generally check the link every morning and that is how it is right now.  Can select two, but says it can't be delivered to my zip code and that it is out of stock in any store in my area.

I've been able to track down 17 out of the 18 total (I'm not going to go crazy and try to track down a double set for the two different shades of green - as far as I'm concerned, Hasbro intended on there being a "green" part - if some of my green parts are dark green and others are more of a forest green, I really do not care).

Anyway, using Rob's short-hand, here's what I need:

[  ] Orange Helmet - Green Torso - Green Lightsaber

Here's what I still have to trade:

[  ] Green Helmet - Yellow Torso - Orange Lightsaber (x3)
[  ] Red Helmet - Purple Torso - Blue Lightsaber (x2)
[  ] Orange Helmet - Blue Torso - Orange Lightsaber
[  ] Yellow Helmet - Blue Torso - Yellow Lightsaber (damaged cardback)
[  ] Yellow Helmet - Red Torso - Red Lightsaber

Would prefer to conduct a trade more than selling them...

Good point. If hasbro announces that they're going to shift from TVC to more of these prototype style figures, we're going to all come to your house and make you eat each and every variation.

Likewise!

How many more do you have to go?

I might call it quits at 6.  I might go for a 7th if I can find the Purple Helmet - Green Torso - Orange Lightsaber version.  With that one, I'd have one of every color in almost every part.  The only pieces I'd be missing are a Red Torso, Purple Right Arm, and Green Lightsaber.  I'd have to buy three different Vaders to get those last three pieces and that seems unlikely unless they show up somewhere for cheap.  On the other hand, there are three variations for each remaining part I'd need, so I won't close the door on it.

I'm tempted to get some extras with Yellow/Red/Blue lightsabers just for my displays of original vintage Luke/Obi/Vader's without weapons.  I don't like using repro stuff, but original sabers with tips are tough to track down, so $10-12 a pop isn't all that bad.
