I agree, that is something that stinks about the box sets too.  I wanted to pick up the X-Men set to get a Rogue, as well as the labcoat/glasses for Beast, but I couldn't justify spending that much for basically one figure. On the other hand, I guess it comes in handy if you don't have a lot of the figures too.  I'm really looking forward to the Spidey/Sinister Six pack, because I only have a "Parachute" Spidey now, and the one in the set is different, and I get 6 baddies right off the bat too.  At least they are putting a few more "new" figures in the sets (at least ones like the Spidey set), with a different Green Goblin, Black Cat, Electro, etc.  Hopefully they won't be too tough to find, I never did see the first round of box sets around here last year.

Thanks Scott, I really appreciate it. I'll keep my eyes peeled for one. I heard there is one coming in Nov. as well, hopefully that will be a good one too.  I always kind of liked the "pose" of the first one released, and it would be nice to have both (or any Twolves that get released in the future...need a Spree...or a Mark Madsen :D...hee hee).  Anyways, thanks again.

Very nice....I have never bought any of these figures, but might have to pick up Ahman Green if I find him (my all time favorite Husker).  Although he might be tough to find in Lincoln, Nebraska :P.  On another sportspicks note, I have been trying (via ebay) to find a Garnett sportspicks (from Series 1 I believe), and there doesn't seem to be many out there for sale, unless I just don't know how to search for them.  I always liked that figure, and it doesn't really matter to me if it is the "common" or "variant" version, but I usually can't even find the common one online.  I am "watching" one auction I found yesterday, we'll see how high it goes.  How much do these retail for (stupid question probably)?

According to this interview article with Jesse Falcon at SuperHeroTimes.com, the Storm figures coming in Marvel Legends Series 8 will have a head variant, one sporting a mohawk.  You can check some other interesting information out here, not a bad read:

You're right Scott, although the pic is kinda small, it does look like there could be a new head sculpt on there.  Looking at the hair (part) it could be possible, that would be sweet if it was a change.

Walking down the aisle yesterday and saw Ketchup Blasted Pringles...anyone else seen or tried them?

I'm a sucker for new gimmicks and would be interested in their taste.  The idea sounds good, Ketchup and French Fries are perfect together

I actually saw these a couple of weeks back when we were grocery shopping as well, but we didn't pick them up either.  I'm a sucker for some Pringles, so it was tempting.

You know, I was just looking over the pics at StarWars.com of the Tusken/Aayla/Bossk wave, and I really like these.  It seems to me the Unleashed line has actually been handled pretty well overall.  Although I preordered the Han/Yoda/Boba as well as the Chewie and Luke from the past couple waves, I have seen all of them at TRU as well.  In fact, this weekend, while at a TRU they had the Luke, Chewie, as well as two of the red Clonetroopers.  They didn't have any "regular" white ones, but two of the red ones.  I don't collect prequel Unleashed, but it was tempting to pick one up.  If we weren't saving money for our upcoming moving expenses, I might have.  I'm really looking forward to the upcoming Tusken for some reason, I think that figure just looks spiffy.  Plus, overall, I think the character selection has been pretty good (although the Stormtrooper could have came a little sooner).  Plus, it is nice to see that they are re-releasing figures like the Leia, I missed that one the first time around...that is if the wife allows me to pick that one up.  Still need to go back and get a Vader too, the collection doesn't look right without one :).

If this Bespin Luke does turn out to be a "clean" variation, I'd be pretty happy.  I've always liked that version of Luke (although it would have been better without the action feature), but it would be nice to have a cleanish version of it as well.  Makes one of these repacks a little more bearable anyways ;).  Plus, it was a pretty good figure to begin with....unlike a few others ;)

That's just the thing...I don't know if it is the re-releases that bother collectors so much, its just that there are SO DARN many of them (and a few that should maybe not be re-released, but rather resculpted).  Although I think we know that we can be a little "tough to please" sometimes, we are somewhat reasonable with our expectations of the OTC line for the most part.  The cardbacks seem to be a huge favorite of carded and loose collectors alike, and I don't think so many people would be mad about the overall line if we were getting say 18-20 new figures, instead of 7.  About half would be ok....they could have had re-dos of Wicket, Gam Guard, and Fortuna (instead of the POTF2 retreads), and add a few more new figures and we'd be all set.

We were in a rush this weekend when I ran into TRU, and I forgot to check if they had the Spidey 2 Doc Ock there or not.  What do you think of it Scott, worth buying?

Got a chance to visit the closest Target this weekend again.  The pegs there have been quite empty since late Jan/early Feb (when I last found new figures in the store...Hoth/Tatt waves).  I was surprised when I saw each and every Star Wars peg packed full........or Barriss, Aayla, and Younglings.  Why are these still shipping?  Oh, they had Deluxe too, but no Ewok unfortunately.  At TRU, it seems to be a Jabba fest, with lots hanging on the pegs.  As for basic figures, its still Bail and his crew, along with a smattering of Hoth figures and a lone R1-G4.

Still pretty bummed about yesterday's game.  I probably tend to get a little too emotional when watching, but I was really getting mad at the Kings yesterday.  Things many of you guys mentioned...Peeler, the fans throwing crap, and I have lost a lot of respect for Brad Miller.  That guy is a dirty player.  Maybe he always has been and I just didn't care as much until he was playing against my team.  Either way, he reminds me a lot of Bill Laimbeer when I started following the Bulls before they could get past Detroit in the late 80s.  A good player, and someone you'd probably want on your team, but a pain in the ass to play against.  I really hope they can pull it out at home in game 7, but Scott is right I think, if Cassell isn't closer to 100%, the Lakers will probably cruise.

Although I will admit I am not the biggest Lakers fan, big congrats to Matt and all the other Laker fans out there.  It was impressive what they were able to do to San Antonio.  Going into the playoffs, I really thought that they would be the team to beat...but they pretty much took it to them after those first two games.  I hope that this second round sets some great conference finals match ups.  I'm on board too, hoping that the Heat can force a game 7 as well.  It has turned into a pretty good playoffs, hopefully it continues all the way to the finals (can we have a nice, competitive finals for once?  probably not :P)

P.S.  In case you didn't notice, the Lakers are genuinely uninterested in the regular season.  They proved all season that they could give a rat's ass about it.

This is a true statement most definitely Matt.  To me, as a lifetime basketball (particularly NBA) fan and follower, this is one reason that despite all the championships and success, it kind of tarnishes their standing in the "all time great teams" categories in my eyes.  No disrespect to the team, or any of its fans, because they are very, very good...and could be on their way to another title this year (should be with 4 HOFers  :P ), but I think the great teams bring it every game...regular season, playoffs, etc.  You look at the Jordan led Bulls for example...you pretty much knew in the nineties, they were probably going to win the title every year (with the exception of the years Jordan was gone)...but they still played their butts off during the regular season.  I mean, heck, they went 72-10 with a team that wasn't nearly as talented as this Lakers team.  I was a HUGE fan of the Bulls from 88 until Jordan and the team was broken up, and was able to watch almost every single game on a channel known as the "Chicago Sports Network" I believe (we got it on our satellite)...and outside of Jordan and Pippen, those teams were completely role players.  The argument could even be made that Pippen wasn't nearly the same player once he and Mike were seperated.  It was that drive and constant competitiveness that earned Jordan (and his teammates) the respect and success they had.  A lot of the same reason I really like Kevin Garnett...whether he plays the best or not (turnovers yesterday...arrrgh), he is still playing to the point where he is leaving it all on the floor.  I guess I'm just saying it is disappointing the Lakers aren't the same way...for a team that is so successful and probably one of the all time great teams as well.  I think Kobe is that way, most of the time, but he might be the only one.  He is highly competitive, and greatly talented, and the only thing that hurts his rep at all is his occasional trips where he decides to be a baby and either not shoot, or shoot way too much (or play selfishly).  Anyways, sorry about the rant, just thinking about this yesterday.  Like I said...great team, just more so disappointing they don't play like they care year round...and have that passion.

I agree, I was holding out for a modern Bib Fortuna, since I didn't have one in my collection...but I didn't think it would be this one:

I would have rather seen Wicket updated a little bit too, or at least include another Ewok or two with him.  They could have at least put Logray in there too.  I don't mind all the rehashes, and I can understand why some are there....but it would have been nice to have more than 7 new figures.  Also, it would have been nice to vary the rehashes a little, and not include all HOF figures that have already been released.  Maybe a Bespin Capture Han or others from the POTJ range.

For those who are interested, TNI has a hi-res shot up of the convention exclusive She-Ra figure HERE

They also have a picture of an upcoming exclusive bust of Hordak.  There will be a non convention exclusive released next year I believe too...looks kind of cool:  Hordak Bust

Saga Collection '06 / The Future of Star Wars Collecting
« on: May 14, 2004, 12:20 PM »
Not sure if this is the right section, since this is broader than just the OTC, so sorry if it isn't.  After reading a number of posts, and particularly Scott's, regarding the OTC rehash lineup for the rest of this year, it got me to thinking about the future of Star Wars...collecting-wise.

Sure, we know Hasbro has the license until 2018, but we don't know exactly what it means.  It might just be "just in case", it might be so other companies don't have it, who knows.  We also know that there might be a TV series (cartoon or live action) coming up after the movies are said and done with.  And, of course, there will be more DVD/DVD set marketing pushes in the future with the Episode III disc as well as the inevitable "super duper spectacular fantabulous ultimate edition six disc set extravaganza" in the future.  My question is, do you think Star Wars figures (or other collectibles) will still be available in retail stores, come down to just specialty shops, just online, or nothing at all?

Personally, I think we'll always have some sort of Star Wars.  We may not have it at the retail level, like Scott mentioned, MOTU and Simpsons both have their die hard collectors as well, but they got dropped this year too.  However, with so many smaller, more specific lines still going through various direct market sources, you would think some sort of Star Wars would be able to last (maybe even through SWShop.com, since they have such a great track record {sarcasm}).  Do you think we will continue to see 3 3/4" figures, ships etc., just more limited in scope (instead of 40-50 a year?).  Do you think it will move to more specialty, collector-driven pieces such as the Unleashed line (which I like), Gentle Giant's statues and busts (which look great as well, although I don't have any), or another avenue?

I was just curious what some of your opinions are on the future of Star Wars collecting.  Of course there are always things to catch up on, vintage or otherwise, via ebay or other sources...but I was thinking more of the "new" product future.  What will we see come, where will we be able to buy it, and what would you like to see happen realistically?
