Saga Collection '06 / Re: Advertising
« on: July 26, 2005, 02:10 AM »
Advertising toylines is supposedly less effective, or so the story goes...  I think it's something good for magazines...  On TV it's tougher.  Adults collecting or wanting to collect generally get into it on their own...  Targeting kids is tough because a lot of stations aren't always willing to air "toy commercials" on their channel (MTV for instance)...

I know I don't see SW advertised much of anywhere though.

A little private company I know is making 1:18 "battle" playsets where you buy a building by the floor, and it stacks.  This, actually, is an idea I've submitted to different companies at different times (Hasbro included).  Our own Muftak's sort of done something similar to this too, in customizing.  He's made multi-level dioramas that stack a bit...

I've always envisioned a Death Star done this way...  You buy it by the floor.  They make a single "standard" size cube, maybe a variety of interiors though, and you buy as many as you want, and stack the cubes as high as you want.  Ideally they'd connect side-to-side as well.  You stack 'em up or out, make a Death Star as big as you want...  It'd work with other environments too.  A hoth Trench piece that can connect on either end to other same trenches...  Make one small segment with a scale laser tower and one larger segment with gun-outlets and a cannon (ala the vintage Imp Attack Base).  Either end can connect though, sort of like the old micro collection playsets...

I'd dig stuff like that and they could be done relatively cheap actually.  Don't get into frills, complex "action features" or anything, and you could do these incredibly cheaply.  Pack-in an army builder or a variant type figure...  It'd be pretty nice.

Yeah, there's 2 Barada's, and the vintage styled one is a whole different outfit...  It'd require a new sculpt almost entirely for the POTF outfit to be made...  A repaint would be a very half-hearted attempt I think.

On the issue of reusing VOTC so soon, I can see a reasoning behind not wanting to see those figures re-released in a basic format, I also think they're the best versions (at least 50% of them are) of their respective character so anything less would be just as annoying to see as well...  VOTC Chewie with a real chain on a removable "dog collar" seems like a neat basic figure to me.  I try to look at the original VOTC as $5 worth of figure with $5 worth of packaging...  I'm not even a packaged collector 90% of the time, but those ones I had to keep at least the packaging nice and neat.

So to that end, I'd dig seeing VOTC Chewie out just because anything less is going to be sorta crummy quality.  Hasbro should just save a buck, re-release a sculpt they have, slap some new crap on him...  If they were REALLY nice they could include a tentacle arm or something weird...  A pike maybe?  The ROTS Chewie sorta sucks though so I'm not a fan of that one re-appearing.

The downtown area for Pittsburgh isn't in terrible shape, it could just use a new arena on its uptown end...  The PNC Park/Heinz Field projects did some good for that part of the city (which is just the opposite side of the river from downtown...  Technically they really are all one thing).

They talk about just building the new arena basically beside where the old one is.  There's an old hospital and church they would knock down, and where the Igloo is there'd be parking then I guess.

I'd like it to happen myself...  It's the oldest arena in the league, and it is showing that age, so it'd be nice.  I like new stuff when I drive down tot he city. :)

We need a nice transit system too though.  That'd help Pittsburgh just as much at this point.

How do I post a middle-finger?  Ah **** it...

ANyway, yeah we were pretty giddy...  Hockey's been a buzz anyway, but the ball bouncing "our way" for once helped tremendously. :)

The "next one" with the truly "great one" together?  Fuggetaboutit!   :P

Now all Pittsburgh needs is for a new Arena...  We're not folding anytime soon, especially considering that, the day of the NHL/NHLPA deal, the prices of Pens tickets dropped by about $20-$30 :)

I think you better take alook at the Caps folding.  They seem more likely to me at this point.  ;D

I hope we get a new areana, not just for the pens, but because our downtown/uptown area NEEDS something new.  PNC Park (even with the PIrates blowing goats) did a LOT for the North Shore.  A new arena/slots area would do a lot for uptown too.  Hard to explain without knowing Pittsburgh's geography, but suffice it to say that it'd make about 100% difference for the entire city.

Trades and stuff?  I'm not sure Rob, actually.  I didn't keep up with picks and stuff that franchises perhaps pushed away, but that maybe is the reason?   :-\

Eh, what the hell...

Non-Star Wars?  I've got to go with the NCC-1701-D...  7 years watching the TNG crew, and I'm simply hooked.  Not to mention all the years of re-runs I've watched the Star Ship Enterprise continue its "Trek" through the galaxy...  I love ST:TNG and wish it was on in the evenings more.  :(

However, as much as I love ST:TNG, I gotta give props to an EU ship, the Moldy Crow...

Ship of Kyle Katarn and Jan Ors, the Moldy Crow is the ship that brings about Kyle's adventures in the Star Wars universe.  He's Solo on Force steroids.  :)  I dig Katarn, I dig his stor...  I dig him so much I even dig his fan-fiction people did about his character making custom levels for the Jedi Knight game.  :)

Katarn just rocks.

A close 2nd for me would be the Corellian Freighter "Otana".  The ship owned by the Aazameen famaily during the "X-Wing: Alliance" games.  The story's never been completed because the game was in development when TPM came out...  It got cut short so TPM games could be put into production.  That simply blows.  A Star Wars flight sim completing the Azameen story is LONG overdue.

The Otana was a Corellian YT-series freighter...  More advanced than the Millenium Falcon or Outrider...  It's a kick-ass ship, and has a cameo at the battle of Endor.  The storyline of "Alliance" is unparalleled to me...  Lots of intribue, twists, and turns, and it fits perfectly.  The Otana is a custom project of mine that I truly wish I had the time to focus on it.  :)

So there ya go.

Hey Ennis, welcome aboard...  Hope you enjoy the site.

The name's not one I recognize, but JD's one of the sites that a lotta the "old timers" from some years ago have come to find as a new home since Rebelscum's just changed over the years...  It's unbearable really.

Enjoy the stay, glad to  have you aboard, and if you have any questions or anything feel free to ask...

Customizing area's really blown up over the past months but enjoy the modern (and vintage) collecting areas because they're some of the finest on the net for sure.

Take care,

JJ

Hey Hasbro! / Re: Ep 3 Air speeders
« on: July 25, 2005, 12:46 AM »
I like them too, and would dig them if done to-scale.  Jedi or "Republic" airspeeders would be neat.

I'm sorta curious why they even had those different ships instead of just using their Jedifighters, but whatever.  They were different, and I'd dig seeing some properly scaled verisons.

Not the most interesting ship though unfortunately.

I think Dale's sure those aren't Lava Lamps, but was just showing me different examples of what he has found...

I coulda sworn I'd seen different Lava Lamps at one point.  May have to just start looking around I guess.  I would dig a Lava Lamp at some point though in my collection.  :)

Man, Chewbacca had a whole other hairstyle when he was all dolled up with cains in JP, so I'm hping he at least sports the ROTJ headsculpt.  Why not just slap a dog collar accessory on the VOTC Chewie, ya know?

Oh well, if the accessory is, at least, removable itself...  That'd be cool.  I will just give it ot my VOTC Chewbacca.

I hope Barada's sorta new...   :-\

You make great detailed points Brent, so I agree wholeheartedly for the most part.  You take Hasbro's comments into detail...  I think the variable that's missing is the unknown case-ration factor, but that's up in the air totally.

I agree though, when you see a Clone (any clone) packed evenly with a Padme Pregnant figure, it becomes odd....   Or a Mon MOthma, or Bail Organa....  It does throw off their credibility for any argument they have legitimately made to this date.

I popped out tonight to catch a Wrestling PPV with my buds and stopped off at retail stores on the way.  So far, my area is no better off than it was about a half a month ago.  :(  I'm bummed...  Part of me is happy they at least didn't over-estimate demand this time, but it's really dismal out there.  It definitely isn't fun to be wasting gas for nothing right now.

I'm sorry, but I had to get some sweet bulbous bodacious booty back to the bottom.

I want to wear that like a hat.

Anton, I think the TE Tank Gunner's what we're getting at this point...  So late in the game, the items displayed looked like production stuff to me, but they could surprise us.

I too am a bit disappointed at the TE Gunner being included, should that be the case, as he's not the best sculpt overall.  The legs are his only benefit while the rest of the figure's a bit unposeable.  I look at the sets more for the Sandtrooper at this point, and the Clones are just gravy.  I'd have rather gotten a SA Clone with a removable helmet than the TE Gunner, I agree...  I think we're getting TE Gunners though unfortunately.

Power of the Jedi / Re: Rare? Medium Rare? Medium?

Good older topic...

POTJ was weird for me.  It was one of the only collections of SW figures in the modern line that I can attest that I saw each wave at least twice.  The irony of all ironies was that K-Mart of all places was THE place to go (besides price varying from basic retail to $2 more).

I'd say most found the latter waves the harder to find...  The waves that included the Imperial astromech (R2-Q5 I believe) onward were hit & miss with retailers.  I know TRU got tons of late-wave POTJ in, but depending on the wave they would sell out really fast too.  Also the regional distribution was all over the place once more.  In PIttsburgh the Imp. Officer/Fleet Trooper/FX-7 wave was shipping in droves.  Good for me since I wanted Imperial Officers in droves too.

Just a state over though, they got the wave with Eeth Koth in droves.  Weird, as while he shipped here, we didn't really have Eeth Koth become a pegwarmer like he was across the border.

POTJ's deathnail was the over-ordering retail did at the start of the X-Mas season.  Around September the Ketwol/Duros wave hit and boy did it linger.  Still see remnant Duros and Ketwols at many TRU's, KB's, KM's, etc...  I've even heard of them at WM stores.  Crazy.

IG-88
Han Solo (Bespin Capture)
Sabe' (Queen's Decoy)
Ketwol (Card Damage)
Queen Amidala (Royal Decoy/Black Travel Gown)
Rebel Fleet Troop (Tantive IV Defender) x3
Imperial Biker Scout (Clean Variation)

(Scout I'm only trading for a "biggie" I need however)

I can help with any of the others though if you're interested.
