Kinda like vehicles...  You can make it as nice as you want but when you break $30 you are in sketchy territory for sales.

I dont' like it much myself but the ARC isn't a bad toy at all for $30, same with the gunship, and while the ARC's not hot this year (I'm amazed), the Gunship wasn't hot in the past when kiddies weren't around even really...  CW, Saga...  Gunships were a dime a dozen.

ROTS they're not so, but they also didn't ship much and have a "rare" mystique about them so people are buying them to hoard, scalp, or as trade bait on top of kiddies actually being there...  So I'm willing to look at that with a grain of salt as being positive.  If the ARC Fighter isn't selling well then to me $30's just a pricepoint people don't want to go to.

$20 JSF's moved fairly well though and some areas never saw AT-RT's and stuff.  Price can make or break specific areas of the line and I agree that it can be a deciding factor for figures too.

I think $5.88-ish is sufficient, that was what a lot of ROTS was costing as I recall.  $4.77 is really nice though, I'd like it to stay in that $4.99 range because I really felt a lot more value out of the majority of figures.  The higher price gets though, the more Cat Minn or Passel Argente start to look like a real ass reaming where you get just a chunk of painted plastic, and not much of anything else.

$6.99 and everyone's got super articulation or close though?  I'm in on that. :)  But last I looked Carkoon Fett's lacking quite a bit, as were some of the Hoth figures...  So I ain't counting on a massive quality increase (decrease seemed more like it to me).

Actually, I 100% hope you're NOT kidding.  A $13 repaint of the Saga Snowtrooper for the Marine would be just the kind of thing to maybe put an end to these exclusives. ;)

In all seriousness though that wouldn't bother me as much since I'd not want to army build if I even wanted one of them...  Super articulated ones though, that's gonna kill me not being able to build a really sizeable force.

Heh, yeah something like that...  Come to think of it I wonder if QGJ could have communed with Yoda and Obi at the same time?

I picture some other Jedi in the background doing the "wazzzuuuppp!" or something.

These hit here now too and I guess I'm getting a set for X-Mas.  Nice getting SW toys for X-Mas.  Got a royal guard too.  I may have to keep my eyes out for more because I only managed to get a couple of him but would certainly like a nice bulkier #.  8 or 10 would be sweet since Palpy had 8 with him on the DS2 I think.

Toy Reviews / JD Review - Commander Gree (Battle Gear)
« on: December 2, 2005, 01:26 AM »
Want to see just how bad a job Hasbro can do when they take repaints the one step that goes "too far"?  Well look no further than......

Yes, we're taking a look at one of the "final 12" this week with Commander Gree (Battle Gear).  The good commander who met his demise at the hands of everyone's little green friend, Yoda, is here and I think it's pretty well set that everyone wants a new version of this figure already.

Amazing isn't it?

Inaccuracies abound and I didn't even touch on all of them in the review I think...  Namely the holster I forgot to mention because I didn't have a good image of him showing the little pistol and holster on his hip.  Damn, I'm slacking.

But yeah I'm really disappointed in Gree, couldn't you tell?  Bad paintjob (and no the variation on the visor doesn't fix this guy), the lack of "suspenders", lack of holster and other details...  Hasbro just needs to quit stretching their budget with this figure.  They easily could have delivered a repaint of the SA Clone sculpt as an Utapau Grunt or even an "EU" Clone (people would have bought it and you know it.  Green Commanders and Black Pilots sell out and so would a Green Grunt) Trooper.  Instead we get the most half-hearted of Commanders, and one of everyone's favorites from ROTS.

I've found Gree makes a neat quasi-EU grunt as I leave hope for a "real" Gree figure.  He's not bad then when you think of him as a Trooper instead of the Commander, but he still is lacking in a big way.

Hasbro...  you got some 'splainin' to do...

Looks different.  I liked the first one a lot, and really that was a movie I went in expecting to be underwhelmed but left feeling great.  This looks pretty good, and a little different...  I'm curious to see exactly what the plot could possibly be though.

Hey Fritz, PM me your address and anything fodder-ish you'd perhaps have (especially if you happen to have any Power Team Elite bits and pieces like HedgeHogs, or whatnot?), I have a Gung Ho here somewhere.

In regards to MSRP, I was reading some comical thoughts on this around the net...  Some people are so in love with the big H that they even seem to think that we SHOULD pay more for these figures because apparantly some are under the belief that retail takes a loss on Star Wars figures paying $5 or more per figure.

I agree with you Anton, as the ROTS line was MSRP $6.99.  I think what we may see is an early attempt to jack the price up and test the waters...  But either things will bog down quickly and cause them to tip their hands, or retail will get into the competition fights and WM/Target will normalize prices on their own with TRU following suit and KB/KM saying screw you all.

I'm not wild about $6.99 figures, and I don't believe that the line's worth that at its current status either, but I do think there's some overreaction going on around the net right now...  And for those who think retail actually takes a loss on Star Wars, the best way to figure out if they are is to look at what they're willing to cut prices down to on a sale.  K-Mart's black Friday sale was $3.50 per figure (BOGO), and I know they didn't take a loss on that, they just moved product at a lower profit margin...  WM and Target supposedly do better financially for Hasbro and with the line in general and I'd imagine they may even get things for cheaper than KM.  I can't believe anyone would have a hard-on for Star Wars toys to the point that they'd accept $6.99 prices under the delusion that retail takes a loss on Star Wars.  That just makes so little sense to me.

We'll see, that Reb. Sentry keeps showing on lists. :)  I'm thinking he'll be the Honor Guard though, not a Fleet Trooper, and thus he could be exempt from sucking.

Galactic Marine as an "exclusive"?  You gotta be ******** me...  If Hasbro makes that exclusive, people will definitely be throwing a huge **** fit.  That's one that has been on people's want lists since it arrived in ROTS.

Faie I can almost see since he was not in the film...  concept and all that...

Neyo though is almost as bad as the Marine.  That's f'n stupid if it comes to fruition.  People want those figures, and in multiples, so Hasbro making them exclusives is just a real middle finger to fans.  Hope that turns out to be false, or that these are just something that'll see re-release.  Not much hope for that of course, but man that kind of asinine logic seems like the kind of thing that very well could happen.

Revenge of the Sith / Re: What figures are hard to find now?
« on: December 2, 2005, 12:16 AM »
I think they did pretty good too, but kind of late...  During the film's release and building up to it Clones were non-existant on the pegs...  They didn't exactly mix the paint variant Clones in heavily either though the Green Cmdr. is showing regularly around here anyway now.  The Black Pilot and Red Shocktrooper were REALLY hard to find though, and both are pretty cool figures worth having a nice army of, especially the #6 Red...  :(

Hasbro, around September, finally started getting heavy rotation on the SA sculpt in my area, and it still sold out till about October around here, and now I see them here and there in groupings no more than 6 or so...  I'd say they really REALLY earned a major return in profit on that one. :)

Revenge of the Sith / Re: ROTS Worst
« on: December 1, 2005, 10:30 PM »
In my opinion ROTS has been one of the highest overall quality lines that Hasbro's put together since the modern line's inception.  What Saga was in 2002 could be considered practically a knock-off toy line in quality compared to the ROTS line in 2005.  They literally are like night and day, and I think the overall quality we have seen in 2005 if one of a list of major contributors to a successful toy line.

The fact is that Star Wars competes for the almighty dollar at retail like every other toy in the aisle with it, and Hasbro's perhaps learned that sub-par figures dominating a line will yield sub-par results in sales at retail.  Couple that with a well-received film critically and I think Star Wars had a good set-up this year for success, and it was a nice thing to see.

Hasbro's key changes were hiding action features, making sure figures were generally more neutral and poseable, and trying to key in on those character selections everyone could generally be pleased with.  I mean, they saw the fact that two Clones could and ultimately did sell very well, and both these Clones were aimed at unique demographics.  Pretty cool really from a collector's point of view and it was just the better for us that both were fairly good figures from our (general) POV as well.

Hasbro had 2 unique Anakin's, 2 unique Obi-Wan's, 2 unique Yoda's...  That's an interesting method of attacking retail really.

Anyway, that doesn't mean that, for ROTS's level of quality with some figures compared to others, that there weren't stinkers in the mix.  Popular sellers, maybe just because so little was available at times, but even the stinker figures have sold in many instances.

Some of the worst of the ROTS line to me though are:

-1 & 2 Anakin & Obi-Wan...  Weak sculpts and in my opinion some lack of accessories (saber-hands are cool but they need to include a saber and open hand as well) hurt these two greatly.  Good for kids perhaps, but the kids in my life want my Evolutions Anakin and begged for Pilot Obi-Wan when they saw mine so you be the judge.  :)

-Grievous' Guard...  I actually don't MIND this figure too terribly, it suits a purpose, but at the same time I look at it and it would've been a great figure to super articulate.  I'm not sure how "off" the head is in its size but it does look odd.  A cloth cape and heavy on articulation would have easily swayed any negative thoughts I had but sadly we got none of that.

-Battledroids (SBD or BD)...  Weak plastic.  It's excuseless in the modern line, and Hasbro has got to remedy the Separatist situation.  We need droids, and we need them now, and we need them able to stand on their own at all times.  Hasbro has to wisen up on this.

-Mace Windu...  What the hell is up with his head and arms?  Not Hasbro's best sculpt, and not to mention how loose and unattractive his arms are.  Mace is a figure that should've had a "Pilot Obi-Wan" kind of figure later in the line.  THAT would've made one hell of a great figure.

-Obi-Wan Jedi Kick...  I got this figure for my gf's oldest son's birthday, and he despised it.  I took it from him and promised him the Pilot Obi-Wan that had just come out, and fortunately found them in time for both the boys' birthdays.  The figure's sculpt is attrocious, and his action feature (though hidden) is obtrusive and barely works if it works at all.  Terrible quality, and much more of a Saga figure than a ROTS figure.

-Wookiee Warrior...  While it's kind of like the Grievous Guard in that I don't totally despise it, the posed legs, and lacking articulation are major drawbacks on this figure, and they make it pale in comparison to its preview counterpart.  I think had Hasbro just articulated the knees and not pre-posed the feet, I'd have been pretty much 100% happy with him as-is.  He's really kinda neat, just flawed enough to make you annoyed with him.   :-\

-Cmdr. Bacara...  What the hell is Hasbro thinking!?  You have a perfectly good Commander sculpt.  You have a #6 Clone sculpt that's great.  You've proven you can do this figure justice with articulation and a feature, so why don't you just do this Hasbro?  Sadly Bacara fell well short of anyone's expectatons and he was the Clone's redheaded stepchild.  Bacara also proved what a lower quality figure does...  It sits at retail, while his not-even-in-the-film-counterpart Red Commander has sold out consistantly all year.  I see a problem here, and Hasbro should too.  Hopefully Bacara's crapitude isn't repeated with future Clones.

-Destroyer Droid...  Come on...  The E1 figure's superior to this, and they put this figure out early enough that they could have re-sculpted the head for the E1 figure and really made fans happy.  Instead we got the Saga pegwarmer re-issued to us.  ::)

-Commander Gree...  A figure Hasbro should have just left till another day when they could have given him his due.  His sculpt's horrible for the character (great for a regular Clone though), and his paintjob is equally inaccurate for Cmdr. Gree.  Hasbro should have put out a SA Utapau Grunt, THAT would have made people really happy...  Or even a SA Shocktrooper would have been more well received than Gree.  I mean, he's one of the only easily obtainable "Final 12".  Doesn't that say something about the quality?

-Vader's Med Droid...  While not a pegwarmer in my area, he still sucked in that he had the same cheap plastic the BD's had.  If the falling over was a feature intended by Hasbro, I'd maybe be more lenient, but man this figure bites.  It topples like Vader's throwing a tantrum in your collection room.

-Capt. Antilles...  Taking the Bail figure's basically identical outfit (more or less) and taking away most of the articulation is a recipe for a piss poor effort on Hasbro's part.  You gotta make Antilles equally cool to Bail Organa's figure, no excuse.  Sculpt's great, articulation horrible, and in my world articulation always is slightly more important than overall sculpt...  Still, if he was completely inaccurate he'd still suck even if he was SA.

-Utapau Warrior...  Cool, but I'm finding mine fall over.  That alone is really disappointing.  Excuseless too so I'm gonna give some negative opinion here on him irregardless of how cool he is in sculpt and such.

-Zet Jukassa...  Another weaker effort, and in this same COl. 2 line.  Zet's articulation is the weakest of any of the secondary Jedi figures in ROTS.  For a kid who kicked more ass on screen than any minor Jedi, he should have had a really nicely articulated figure.

-Yoda Spinning Attack...  A modern line turd if I ever saw one, this figure is just attrocious looking head to toe.  If I had to, I'd probably label this the worst of the ROTS line just off the top of my head, and compared to these others.  Yes, Yoda spinning attack reigns supreme for suckitude.

I'm sure I could pick apart a lot of other figures but I wanted to get a quick listing of my least favorites together...  Others aren't so much bad as they have annoying flaws.  Tarfful for instance lacks knee articulation and a good paintjob.  The Neimoidian Warrior's lack of knee articulation but has ball/socket joints...  Those are so-so figures that are neat to have but could have really been a lot higher quality.

And the Deluxe line...  Ugh.  Pretty much the entire first wave except the Anakin to Darth Vader figure sucked, and that Anakin wasn't high on my list.  I think Kicking Obi-Wan and the Emperor were the worst, but as per usual the Deluxe line underwhelmed a bit.  I thought Stass Allie was ok, I thought the Spider Droid was a marked improvement, and I thought that the Crab Droid was cool but could've used some better sculpting to make it more realistic...  Not glowing reviews but passable.  I'd even say the Clone Jettrooper is sorta cool, and the Yoda w/can-cel was neat really...  Vader w/Med Table was probably the best, but really the Deluxe line never makes your eyes pop out of your skull unless it's in a non-movie year...

I mean, compare ROTS's Deluxes to stuff like the Hoth Wampa.  I'd take the Wampa.

Anyway, ROTS was a pretty cool line to me, and I was pretty well happy with 90% of the Collection 2 figures overall.  Even the pegwarmers like Bail, Palpy, and Mothma are still GOOD figures.  They're just dull as watching paint dry, but they get good marks from me.  The Jedi rocked, it was like one big apology from Hasbro and I liked that.  Very cool, and ROTS dished out some greats...  :)  Even the list of figures I made that were bad, most of them would probably have been god-sends in the Saga '02 line had they been there.  I'd have killed for any neutral posed Jedi even if they had an action feature and a bad sculpt.

In my area with Saga we had TONS of Clones available in both Pilot and Red form...  Just tons, and when they went away they resurfaced at KB for clearance prices.  At that point the pilots actually moved better than the red troopers which was funny.

Personally, one I'm seeing less and less is the AT-RT Driver now.  I see #41 more than that even...  I haven't seen a #6 Clone since the SHocktroopers started to ship and show up places...  I'm really surprised, but I just haven't seen any for months.  The SA Clone I'm happy I can buy if I want him but I know if I need some I gotta **** or get off the pot because I doubt they're gonna be here forever...

Neimoidians I'm hoping to build a very nice army with though come Target Clearance time.  ;D

I just got word I'm getting the twins for X-Mas. :)  Yay!  I was actually planning on looking for these next week when I started my X-Mas shopping.  Thankfully now I don't have to think about it at all.  Sucks knowing what you're getting for X-Mas though.

Agreed, and I could actually do without EU Neimoidians like the homeguard guy.  That's what the neimoidian Warrior's job is. :)
