Title: What is Your Favorite "Other SW Collectible"?
Post by: Brian on March 18, 2004, 11:02 AM
Sometimes it seems like the "other" collectibles are neverending for Star Wars, and I know that there are several others that I would like to get into if I had the money and space for them.  Out of what you have in your collection, which is your favorite "other" collectible...whether it is a single item or a certain line of items.  For me, outside of basic figures (vintage and modern) and the ships, etc. along with them, the other collectibles I have are OT Unleashed, the Playskool line (OT only), and I'm working on completing a Burger King Glass set (and a few other miscellaneous items).  I guess for me, I like all of these other focuses....but the Playskool line or the glasses would be my favorite.  I am really hoping the Playskool line does end up continuing...and I look forward to completing the OT glasses sometime this year too.  Maybe it is nostalgia, but I have always just loved these things.

#1 Kubricks
#2 Unleashed
#3 Playskool

Kubricks are probably my favorite thing going in all of Toydom right now...the universal scale and different lines (SW, Marvel, DC, Muppets, Sesame Street, Back to the Future etc) make them great for displaying together.  No different scales, no different paint jobs, they all look the same and look great together.  Not too mention the thrill of chase and hidden figures.

I thought you didn't like chase figures Scott, a la Marvel Legends ???

1. Tomy mini-dioramas
2. Riddell Helmets
3. Unleashed
4. Kubricks

2 and 4 are damn expensive.  1 is dirt cheap with only two series per year and these are really remarkably well done.  I love the unleashed, but feel their selection is a bit wonky.  They absolutely do great poses and the treatments are excellent, but I still question some of the choices.  There are just so many other ideas I think should have been done first, but that is just a matter of opinion.

I don't...but opening up Kubricks is about the most fun thing I have ever done with action figures since I have actually played with them :P

Have you had much luck then with chase figures?  Thus far I've been shut out.

It would be neat if mini-mates would make Star Wars figures.  Just to add to the confusion.

I haven't opened any Star Wars, most of the other ones I have bought though I have opened

I'm hoping for LOTR Kubricks (they are making Mini-Mates) SW Mates would rock...unfortunately I don't think the can because of Lego

Kubricks, Playskool & anything vintage. To many good things in the vinty line to narrow it down.  ;D

Hmm, Lego license.  Hadn't contemplated that either.  I do like the Lego figures though, pretty cool little guys.  Mini-mates would be better.  The only mini-mate I own is a Spock (wifey has McCoy) :-X

If you're talking ANY "other collectible", then I'd have to say the Master Replicas stuff.  I love those beautiful prop replicas, but unfortunately can't afford to buy them.   :-\  Their upcoming AT-AT might be the coolest licensed "other collectible" ever though!

As for affordable stuff, I pick up most of the Legos (or maybe these don't qualify as "other" since they've got their own forum), and have recently started eyeing those cool Kubricks too.   8)  I also enjoy picking up random vintage stuff as well, from shirts to albums, to books and magazines, etc.

i also have  the three yodas, its just great seeing peoples faces when they see them.i also agree the MR stuff is awesome. as far as  low end stuff the playskool line is hard to beat, also the koto kits are a fav of mine.  i like all "other collectibles" though, it spices up a collection.

Just bumping this up, wondering if anyone's "favorite" other collectible (in Star Wars) has changed...or maybe you've picked up a new line that is your current favorite.  I really enjoy everything I collect in Star Wars, and I am still tempted on a weekly basis to join the ranks of the Kubrick collectors (maybe once I have some more $ to spend), but I think one line that I am really digging right now is the Unleashed series.  This is a line I hope continues on for quite some time, as long as it makes sense, and there are tons of figure options available for them to still visit.  There aren't so many of them each year that we get over saturated with them either, which helps to keep it fresh I think.  Plus, I can't afford the great product put out by Gentle Giant really right now, so it is a nice "statue/adult collectible" alternative for me personally.  I also really enjoy the Galactic Heroes line, which is just fun, and relatively inexpensive to collect.  Any lines you are particularly enjoying right now in the Star Wars world?

Posters are great
Comics are fun and inexpensive, great art
Trading cards are also in abundance.

SW Food/food related items are possibly my fav. (also anything you can find in a grocery store, toothbrushes, Puffs tissues, Dixie cups, etc.)

Hard to pick just one category.

The original promo glassware- the ones I've kept all these years and was obsessive about when I was younger.  I was so in love with Luke that I kept begging anyone to take me to BK to get the glasses, hoping to get one w/ him on it- and unfortunately I kept getting the Leia/Jabba glasses.  So, I have 8 Leia/Jabbas and around 3 Lukes (some have broken over the years) in my cabinet.  Some reason I only have two Hans and one Ewok from ROTJ's line.  I do use them on occassion- but usually only when I have other fans over- sort of a "marked" drink system works out w/ them.

I've been contemplating which Other Collectible line would be my favorite, but I think it tends to evolve/change over time, so it's hard to really say.  The Master Replicas FX lightsabers would be right up there.  Those things are the most fun I've had since I was dressing up as Darth Vader for Halloween back in the 70's...  I was pretty sure I was a real Jedi when I first whipped that Anakin FX saber around, and the subsequent sabers are even better!

I'm with Grant on the MR props too.  Best stuff out there, though too rich for my blood at this point.  I'd love to get into that line someday though.

Despite some of the negative pub they've gotten early on, I still really like the Code 3 ships so far.  Really nice work, even though they may not quite be worth their $300 price tag...

Then there's the always loveable little Kubricks.  A great, and challenging, collectible line right there!  Love the new WOTC minis too, and I'm sure I'll be digging the upcoming Gentle Giant Bust-Ups line as well...

Starting to enjoy the latest Unleashed sculpts, so that's a line I'm digging getting into.

But I think Shannon just may have reminded me what my all-time favorite Other Collectible just might be...  The vintage Burger King glasses.  Such nostalgia and wonderful memories with those!  I unfortunately lost my sets in the family garage sales of the early 80's, but I was fortunately able to replace them all with a great complete set of all 12 in mint condition off of eBay for only $50 about 5 years ago (from a local seller, in person, no less).  Bummed they're not MY original glasses, but it's nice to have a beautiful new set of them anyway.  I'd love to get the posters that went along with them as well...   8)

That's a tough one... I have 2 other favorites. First would be posters/prints/artwork. A sample of my collection can be seen here (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=4751.0) (shameless plug :) ), while my other favorite would be clothing/t-shirts. I've got about 100 now, and I'm working on making a little photo library of those too  ;D
Title: What's the Favorite part of your collection?
Post by: Matt_Fury on April 12, 2005, 06:19 PM
I was askedhis by Yodafan at a small BBQ at my place and I really had a tough time answering it.  Every part of my collection has it's own little appeal to me, otherwise I wouldn't have it, but still, what is my favorite???

My vintage figures are really special to me since they were what got me started in this whole crazy hobby.  I don't collect vintage anymore because I think it would ins some small way make the vintage figures I owned and spent countless hours playing with somehow less special.  I'm sure plenty of you disagree, but hey, that's just me.

My collection has evolved as this hobby has in the past 27 years.  I guess what really appeals to me in my collection are the odd pieces that most people and the casual collector might not have.  Stuff like:

-The Diecast NASCAR cars.
-My Movie Posters (which look great now that they're all up on my living room wall!)
-The odd exclusive figure like Theater Luke, Toy Fair and Lava Vader, Holo Yoda and the Holiday Sets....just because they are different and geared toward the collector and not necessarily the kids.

So what's the stand-out item(s) in your collection???

Y'know, I read this and had to sit back for a long while and think about it.  Like you Matt, I like pretty much everything I have.  I really love the vinty figs because it seemed like a team effort out of here, the nostalgia I never experienced as a kid was created in adulthood and it was challenging to get them.

But my favorite stuff has to be the Riddell mini-helmets.  They're just such nice pieces and for the most part I got them pretty cheap, stormtrooper not withstanding.  They're quite unique, a little less common and darn well done.  It's also a fairly limited set in the sense of they don't eat a lot of space, like the Unleashed do.  THose are fantastic pieces as well, but they just keep coming and coming!

Tough question.  I like my Lego collection, I like my Hasbro collection (most of it anyways).  But I would have to say my top three are: Kubrick, Unleashed and the Applause figural mugs.  All pretty cool pieces.  Kubrick and Unleashed are fairly common collectibles, but I think the mugs were overlooked by a lot of collectors, which is shame - they're really nice pieces that display well.

A question for you, Matt.  How many diecast Nascar SW cars are there?  I assume you're talking about 1/24 scale.  I only have John Andretti's car and the three 1/64 cars that you could get from a cereal promotion when AOTC came out.  I know Jeff Gordan is the main driver to have a SW paint scheme, but I refuse to buy any of that tool's merchandise.  Any other drivers with SW paint jobs (either previously or upcoming?)

The highlights of my collection aren't rare or expensive, they're just things I really dig or which have sentimental value.

Off the top of my head:

original (95) Essential Guide to Characters -- my very first EU book. I guess I can blame the EGTC for putting me into this whole mess. :P

POTF2 Boba Fett -- I'm not even a big fan of Boba, but he was my first SW action figure.

POTF2 Death Star Escape Playset (http://www.rebelscum.com/POTF2deathstarescapeplayset.asp) -- it's not that big or frankly exciting, but I found it on clearance some years back and bought it on a whim. It's a neat enough little piece, for what it is. I think the reason it appeals is because I didn't even know it existed till I found it, so it had some thrill of discovery associated with it.

Shadows of the Empire Dash Rendar and Boussh Leia, because they're cool, because of nostalgia, and because they ended up being pretty uncommon.

EU Concept Speeder Bike -- the only thing I have from the short-lived POTF2 EU attempt.

MicroMachines and Action Fleet -- much nostalgic attachment, in particular the Shuttle Tydirium which was the first one I got.

And actually, all of my POTF2 and EpI figures, due to increasing nostalgia as years go by.

TPM Scout Tank (http://www.rebelscum.com/episodeIinvarmoredtank.asp) -- another piece I didn't even know existed until I bought it on a whim. A nifty sorta-EU variant on the AAT.

All my Clone Wars stuff -- toys, posters, books, comics.

StarWarsShop.com exclusive ROTS logo shirt -- this thing roXX. I love it.

Holo Yoda -- the only remotely rare exclusive I own. Plus I scored him at Midnight Madness. *gloats and rubs everyone's nose in it* :P

AT-RT -- it's a cool toy, I dig every type of walker, it's the first ROTS toy I got besides Holo Yoda, and I got it at Midnight Madness.

Various EU books I've had signed by the authors

A NJO baseball cap I got at a book signing (Jim Luceno for The Unifying Force) by answering a trivia question. I got Mr. Luceno to sign it, and I hope to get Troy Denning, Matt Stover, and Aaron Allston to sign at C3.

Definitely a tough question, and hard for me to pinpoint one area probably.  The basic figure collection is easily the largest part of my collection, and really the basis of me starting into Star Wars collecting anyways, so that definitely is very important to me.  As a side note to that, the vintage figures I have hold a special place for me, because I still find them cool, and they definitely have that nice nostalgia-ey feeling to them :).

Other than those, I really enjoy the Unleashed collection I have, along with the vintage BK glasses, and my Star Wars framed posters.  My wife picked up and framed the vintage posters for me as a birthday present a couple of years ago, so those definitely hold a special place.  I guess I can't do a good job of picking the "favorite" part of my collection, because it could be a number of things, and is always changing.  Right now, I really enjoy the ROTS stuff I've been picking up...but overall, I'm usually more of an OT person.  The VOTC figures are really nice too, and if I didn't have anything else modern, I'd probably at least have those.  Overall, all of those stems from my vintage toys (and the movies, obviously), so I'd say those figures, the movie posters, and the glasses (vintage stuff all around) are probably my favorite overall, but I really do like everything that I've been fortunate enough to pick up over the years.

Mikey, as far as I know, there's the Jeff Gordon Episode I car.  The John Andretti cars you have for Episode II, and the Jeff Gordon, Elliot Sadler, Dale Jarret, and the concept Promo Darth Vader car for Episode III.  I do stick with the 1:24 scale because of the detail, but I also have the three from the Cheerios giveaway back in 2002.

Interesting choices from everyone else...as I knew they would be.  I'm also glad to see that I'm not the only one to find the question a bit difficult.

Yes, this is a tough one, but I'll give it a whirl.

(in no particular order)

* Vintage Star Wars Vader MOC - hard to believe that this thing is still in the package - it's almost thirty years old!  Memories...scattered pictures.... ;)

*Jedi Force Vader and Chewbacca - not mine, but my son's.  First SW figures I bought for him!   ;D  Though I play with them more than him, he wants to play with the Koto Vader I have (supposedly) out of his reach.  He came into our living area last night with his arms wrapped around it!!  Yikes, don't drop it!

*ARC-170 - First ship I bought from ROTS - the boy loves this thing.

*POTF2 AT-AT - Never had one as a kid, always had to go over to the neighbor's house to play with his.

*TPM R2-B1 and TC-14 - Wife bought me these for Sweetest day - had no idea they were rare!

*First 24 Vintage SW figures (loose but pristine) - you wouldn't believe how tight the limbs are on these guys - I swear they've never been played with.  Found them in a podunk Antique mall.  Boba has the rocket disclaimer which I think is kinda cool!

*MR ANH Vader saber - first saber to make an appearance in the SW saga and hey, it's Vader! - only 1:1 saber I own and most likely ever will.   >:(

Well, I guess I'll be the first one to say this: the DVDs of the 5 films. :)

If you want actual "collectibles" counted, though, I'd have to say the ROTJ Burger King glass with Luke, Vader, and Palpatine on it.  This was the only one I had when I was a kid, and it somehow survived into adulthood by being put in the back of my grandma's kitchen cabinet away from light and the elements.  My mother dug it out about two years ago and I was beyond thrilled.  I swore up and down I was going to try to put together a complete set of the BK glasses from all three films, but due to finances and health problems, I never did.

One of my cousins, however, gave me a head-start and got all four ROTJ glasses for me, mint condition, from someone online, so that was a really big moment for me, collecting-wise.  It's odd that with all the pieces that have cost me countless dollars over the years, it's the one glass that was maybe a buck from when I was a kid that brings me the most happiness.
Title: Re: What's the Favorite part of your collection?
Post by: JediMAC on April 13, 2005, 06:09 PM
I agree with the sentiment of this being a very difficult question.  It's almost like asking a parent which of their kids is their favorite...  ;)

I think right now, I'd probably go with my Kubrick collection.  They're cool, unique, fairly rare, nostalgic, and are made by a company (Medicom) that I really respect and appreciate.  Plus, they're a challenge to get, which adds a little excitement to collecting the line.

Another thing I'd definitely have to include, and thanks to Michael for the reminder, is my complete set of the vintage Burger King glasses.  I can't even beging to explain the nostalgia I have attached to those, especially the first 4 from ANH.  Unfortunately, the ones I now own were bought off of eBay about 6 years ago ($50 for all 12), since I had to replace my childhood ones that were sold off in one of the family garage sales at some point.

But I don't count the DVDs in here, since those aren't collectibles, IMO.  They're simply a standard "must own" item for any Star Wars fan and collector!  That's like saying my underwear is my favorite part of my clothing wardrobe.  Yeah, they're great.  But basically they're just essential, and thus rather unnoteworthy and common...  ;)

I gotta get me a set of thoe BK glasses. I need a visual guide or something to get me started.

I'm gonna break this down a bit..

vintage- Chewbacca's Bandolier Strap. I got this back in the day, and thought it was the coolest thing EVER. Not the best way to store one's figures, but I didn't have one of those C-3PO or Vader cases, so this was cool.
My mom has a picture of four-year-old me wearing this with a Masters of the Universe child-sized sword and shield.  It disappeared sometime in the late 80's, but thankfully, it's one of the few pieces in the vintage line that isn't expensive, so I got another boxed one. Joke was on me that it doesn't fit anymore.

Modern- Tough call. I've finally got all those big-ass vehicles (except the Shuttle), but I don't know if any of those are it.
I think I'll go with my army of Stormtroopers. I only had one Stormtrooper in the vintage days, and my mother didn't like buying repeats (this coming from a lady who had to buy five R2-D2s since mine kept losing their legs) and now I have a lot, both vintage and modern.

Runners up-- Full set of carded VOTC or full set of Masters of the Universe Commemerative Series reissues.

Gee, can I say "toys" for my answer? How about tied for favorite "toys and personalized items"? :P

I guess the thing I find most enjoyable is having the whole Rebel Alliance or Cantina or Jabba's Palace assembled for display on my shelves. So that pretty much includes all the best modern renderings of each character.

Then there's the autographed photos from Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher et al, souvenirs of having met them.

So putting it that way, it's pretty much "toys and personalized items". :D Oh yeah, also my pic of me and Chewie at SWC. Yeah, that, too. :P

Hands down my complete Gentle Giant mini-bust collection.

No other collectibles bring chills to my bones when I see them nicely displayed in my studio......

Also helps that these are "non-toy looking" enough that my wife allows me to display them where guests might see them.... ;) Anything toy looking I display she gives me the evil eyes....LOL

Without taking weeks of pondering this question, the thing that immediately jumps to mind is my poster collection. I don't have anything exceptionally rare or valuable, but I do have close to 75 different posters. Of course, there are a total of 5 hanging on my walls, and the rest are all rolled up under my bed. But it's still the favorite part of my collection.

If I had to pick something else, it would be my 21-back Boba Fett card. Opened, obviously, but it's in excellent shape, and it rocks.

Wow, this is really tough. I dont know. I think my favorite part has to be soemthing i hated as a kid and didnt want for some reason. It would have to be eithe rmy MOC set of Droids and Ewoks or my POTF coins set. These are things i went back and got becuase i really wanted them and it was not easy, especially the coin set.

But I think Shannon just may have reminded me what my all-time favorite Other Collectible just might be...  The vintage Burger King glasses.  Such nostalgia and wonderful memories with those!

Do we not have a dedicated thread for these guys?

I managed to unearth my original glasses in a box while visiting my mom in WA last week. I have x2 Jabba/Leia, x2 Luke/Vader, and x1 Ewok ROTJ glasses, and a lone ESB Vader/Fett. The rest have been lost over the years, either by being dropped during use, or in the dishwasher (eegads), but the ones that have survived are in great shape.

Talk about nostalgia! These things were in use in my house long, long after the movies came and went, and in some ways are almost more familiar than the movies. I used to use these every damn day. They were the only glasses I used!

Now I'm in going to have to fill out the collection. I see there's quite a few on ebay at the moment, and the prices aren't really bad at all. I just paid 4.99 for the remaining ROTJ cup. There seem to be a lot of complete sets up there, and picking through the auctions for individual glasses looks to be my biggest challenge.

Oh, and in the same box were some 1978 Taco Bell Superman: The Movie glasses, too. Sweet.

I have a lot of fond memories of the BK glasses as well, and they are probably one of my favorite parts of my collection.  I've been slowly working at picking up the originals again, since the ones from my childhood are in "less than mint" condition to say the least.  We got major use out of these, they went through the dishwasher, etc., so they got worn.  I remember using these all the time though.  I've always been a fan of the "painted glasses" overall.  I know we had a few others at our house as well, superheroes, "Camp Snoopy", and some Looney Toons ones, but I think those have been broken/lost since I moved out/went to college.  Definitely one of my favorite Star Wars collectibles though, and one of the reasons I've really enjoyed the new Target cups...even if they are plastic.  Just need to find a good deal on the first set of vintage glasses, and I'll be all caught up.  I think I ended up paying about $15 (including shipping) for each of the ROTJ and ESB sets, so I was happy with that.

Just wanted to bring up this thread from last year, to see if anyone's opinions have changed on what is their favorite "other collectible" from the Star Wars world.  I guess I'm thinking more of the active lines now, and what you are most interested in.  It seems like the Sideshow 12" line is getting a lot of attention now, and might be many people's favorite.  Its looking like I might have to cut back to collecting just the Hasbro stuff, and staying away from higher end stuff - or if there is anything higher end, its going to have to be just one line and limited.  I'd probably have to pick between the Gentle Giant mini busts and the Sideshow 12" line, those just both seem to be quality products (although I don't have any 12" figures yet).  Maybe I should just forget both of those, save up, and finally get a few of those Master Replicas pieces I've always wanted :).

Aside from the higher end stuff, I guess the "other" collectibles (from the Star Wars Universe) I currently buy are the Galactic Heroes and Unleashed (large scale).  Who knows how much longer we'll see new figures in the Unleashed line (if ever), and the Galactic Heroes are fortunately pretty inexpensive.  I've also picked up a few bust ups, but will probably have to drop those aside from the upcoming Clone Wars animated ones and the Cantina Han (from the Mos Eisley wave) if I can find it individually.  The Han/Luke Stormtroopers look neat as well.  Anyways, what line or lines interest you the most at this point - especially with more and more people slowly moving away from the mass market stuff it seems.

The Sideshow and Kubricks are fighting for the number one spot to be honest. I think the 4" figures have dropped a bit. I still love them, but have been more excited with the other lines.

I'm an Action Fleet and MicroMachines collector. For me the regular action figures are the "other" collectibles. But I don't collect SW figs, just have a few I like.

Instead I started collecting Kotobukiya Imperials and droids (the R2/C-3PO set is on pre-order). Not interested in Koto PT statues not even in clones as well as I'm not interested in the Jedi or other Koto statues. Just Imperials and droids for me. ;)

And I'll pass on the Gentle Giant busts. They are nice but I was never interested in them, they are just half a figure...  I'm sure there somewhere in this universe are thousands of legs waiting to be attached to the GG busts ;D

Kubricks and medicom superdeformed are getting my attention and money these days.
As much as I like the 3 3/4 line, there isn't enough new and exciting to keep me going. I posted a long rant about playsets in the Hey Hasbro! thread, so I won't repeat it here.
So bricky little SW figures from japan (particlularly imperials) are my favorite "other", and have been for few years.
