Vintage Kenner / Vintage Printing and Licensing
« on: December 17, 2021, 03:39 PM »
I have seen a few posts recently for books about vintage Star Wars figures with various content and photos.  Does anyone know if these prints require permission or licensing from Hasbro and/or Disney?  If I made a book or a poster or whatever with photos from my own collection, is that subject to any kind of ownership beyond my own?  I'm guessing that use of the Star Wars logo would be copyright infringement, though I see it sometimes on custom figure/packaging designs.  Just wonder what is or is not fair game, especially if you were going to print and sell something.

The Original Trilogy / ANH: Re-imagined Obi-Wan vs. Vader
« on: April 29, 2020, 10:20 PM »
Okay, this is brilliant.  Check out this 6 minute video with a revised final battle between Kenobi and his former pupil.  I can't stop watching it.  With full apologies to the purists, I'm okay with them revising the originals if they're going to create scenes on par with this.  It's not perfect - Vader looks a little too short in one clip, etc., but a huge improvement over the slower pacing of the original.

Watto's Junk Yard / Ads, Sponsors, & JediDefender

Sorry Jeff, I wanted to do it but Dorkside was $5 cheaper.

That's all?  Not going to tell other people how to spend their money, but I'll pay a few bucks more for a sponsor site.  I'd consider it a $5 investment in keeping the lights on at JD...

Wow, I was really excited for the Jawa, but the picture is a huge disappointment for me.  No soft goods?  This thing looks like an oversized POTF2 figure.  I'm glad we're finally getting a Jawa, but this is another swing and a miss on the design.  Maybe I can make my own custom brown cloak to fit over it.   :-\  We have cloth goods for the Tusken, Vader, Luke, Leia, & Ben...but not the Jawa.  Unreal.

The Tusken looks a little lame in package as well.  Glad to see in the loose photos that his robe goes well beyond just the arms.  The mouth piece looks a little goofy to me, but everything else seems pretty solid for this guy and the Death Squad Commander (though I would have preferred his original vintage colors).

Collections / Insurance?
« on: February 1, 2016, 09:38 AM »
So, this has been nagging at the back of my mind for a while.  Given the large investment many of us have in Star Wars, I'm curious to know if anyone has any added insurance on their stuff.  I started checking into a few years back, but never got around to it.  Then last Summer, a neighbor's basement flooded.  I have the same style home by the same builder and keep my Star Wars stuff in the same room that was hit, so not hard to imagine how awful that would be for me.  I also have a ton of comics, and while they are bagged I am sure there is potential for damage there as well.  Would you need to document everything you have or just insure for an estimated amount?  I don't think standard insurance would cover things beyond the basics, right?  Would love to know more about what options are out there.

Vintage Kenner / Vintage Carded Figure Restoration
« on: October 31, 2015, 10:25 AM »
So my son went into my SW room last night to show the babysitter and this happened.

It's a signed POTF Vader, so not really something I can replace.  Luckily I bought it signed, so it doesn't have some amazing memory tied to it.  Any suggestions on what to do with it now?  I thought about just just taping it up, but not excited about how that will look.  I could open it, but I dont really display the cards ex figures or collect the loose coins.  I could try to sell it damaged, but not sure if it's worth anything at this point.  Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated in my time of mourning.

This is why I'm getting out of collecting comics.

"STAR TREK GREEN LANTERN #1 (OF 6)"

Is this really the direction writers feel they need to go to sell comics?  Really?

Modern Classifieds / Selling: Bravestar & Visionaries Figures
« on: June 12, 2014, 06:22 PM »
My neighbor grabbed these out of storage after 20 years and wants to sell them off.  Anyone have an interest in them or have any idea what they might be worth?  They're almost all sealed, including the big playset.  Never opened.  I only took one picture of the Visionaries figures, but he has 11 of them all still sealed.

Any interest/help would be much appreciated.  He's not looking to make a fortune on them, so if you're interested I'm sure I can get you a deal.  Thanks for looking...

Gentle Giant / Guild Memberships
« on: December 20, 2013, 04:28 PM »
I'm curious to know who else here has signed up for GG Guild memberships, and if so, are you satisfied with the benefits?  I've signed up for two years now to get the exclusive 12" Retro figures that are only available to those that sign up.  Along with the "free figure (you have to pay $15 shipping), there are other discounts/coupons included in the membership.  One  of the most appealing offers is $30 off any in-stock merchandise.  The problem with this offer is that GG never has jack squat in stock.  Has anyone here actually been able to use their $30 coupon?

I've checked periodically throughout the year and almost everything I'm interested in sells out on pre-order.  The coupon is only good for the calendar year, so I popped in today to see if there was anything, even extras, that I could use it on.  It's nearly impossible to find anything with an Add to Cart button (meaning in-stock), and EVERYTHING I clicked says "Sorry, this item is currently not available.)  Do they seriously have zero inventory on anything right now?  Coincidentally the last few weeks when the coupon is valid.  Can't call them about it, because their offices are closed Dec 20-30th.  I love my 12" retro figs, but this feels like a huge scam to me.

Anyone else unhappy with the Guild membership or have others been able to utilize the extra discounts?

Gentle Giant / GG Jumbo Vintage Walrusman
« on: May 13, 2013, 06:05 PM »
So, did anyone else order this figure?  I pre-ordered from my comic shop about a year ago and just received word this weekend that they would not be able to fill my order.   >:(  >:(  >:(  I looked online and apparently many people already have these AND it is available on the GG website, so kind of pissy that my  comic shop is unable to get them as planned.  I prefer to order from them because I get free shipping, which makes these a lot more affordable.  I scarambled and found another site via Amazon that only cost a little more ($76.66 shipped), but am curious to know if anyone else had the same problem.  It looks like Hammerhead is already out there, but still listed as pre-order for me, so I wonder if I'll have the same damn problem.

Collections / JediJman's Collectible Man Cave
« on: March 12, 2013, 06:29 PM »
I moved to a new home in December, so am fortunate to have the opportunity to completely rebuild my Collectible Man Cave.  I tested this name with the neighbors and got far more respect from the guys than referring to it as my "Star Wars Room."  Anyway, I want to track the progress on here and solicit feedback as I go.  I have a general plan for what I want to do, but am very open to suggestions.

The room was completely unfinished space (16 x 14 at the widest part), so over the last few months I've picked up and installed a padded carpet, one wall of peg board, and adjustable black shelving around the perimeter.  I decided not to frame up the rest of the room, since I'd just put shelves in front of it.  I'm also leaving the ceiling open as I want to hang a lot of ships and like the "warehouse feel" of it.

The next step was to track down some lighting.  See what I did there?   ;)  I found a great deal on Craigslist, with 6 track bars and 18 lights + bulbs for $50.  I had to pay another $50 in connection bars, wiring, screws, and an outlet, but happy to get this done for about $100.  Since it's unfinished, I also had to cut and install some wood cross pieces to bolt the track lights onto.  Here's a shot of the finished track light system.  I may put up more lights if needed.

I plan to start stocking the shelves with my 12" collection first, which will go on the far wall, top shelf.  There's about 2 feet of clearance between the top shelf and the rafters and my shelves are 2 feet deep.  So, I decided to build some rough, but sturdy risers across the top.  I won't win any carpentry awards, but this was a cheap and quick afternoon project that I hope will help spread out the big guys.

Collector's Tips / Overhead Lighting
« on: January 30, 2013, 07:50 AM »
So, I'm in the midst of building a new Star Wars room in the basement and would love some tips on lighting.  There are no windows in the room and I currently just have one exposed 100w bulb.  The room is about 14x16 lined with black shelving on two walls. The ceiling is unfinished, so recessed lights aren't really an option.

I was initially thinking of putting in suspended flourescent shop lights.  These are bright and relatively inexpensive I think, but they tend to cast a harsh light and I'm concerned that they wouldn't project enough light under the shelves.  I also don't want to hear a hummmmm all the time.  Track lighting seems like a good option, but I have no idea where to start.  LEDs would be nice energy savers, but do they give off enough light?  I also don't have a ton of dough to plunk down right now, so looking for a lower cost solution.

Any ideas?  Help me JDers, you're my only hope!
